Very, very happy to say that three visits in, The Roost's River West location is as good as the Irving Park location. I wish the interior was a little bigger, but the tradeoff of this location being just a five-minute drive from my house means that I'll do more takeout here. Prices on sodas are still a bit too high but since I'm not dining in anymore, I'm able to avoid that issue (but I do miss my grape Fanta in glass bottles). This location also seems to be making sammies a little faster than in Irving Park; I actually came in this past Monday and ordered on the spot, and had my sandwich in 15 minutes...usually, it takes about 20 minutes to do that at lunch time in Irving Park. I still need my frequent eater card replenished, and I'm sure they'll get a supply to the River West spot soon. Otherwise, solid first month!! read more

Pretty conflicted on whether or not to give this place 3 stars or 4 stars, but here's why I went with 3 stars. I ordered the 1/4 Chicken (Original flavor with mixed meat) which comes with 2 sides. I got the Mac n Cheese and the Roasted Green Beans. My boyfriend got the Fried Chicken Sandwich with the Biscuit and his 2 sides were the Mac n Cheese and the Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding. (I forced him to get the chocolate chip bread pudding because I really wanted to try it.) This is a no frills type of place. So no frills that there wasn't even AC inside the restaurant, so my boyfriend, his roommate, and I sat outside. While the food is definitely fresh, it took SO long for the food to come out. I was so hungry and there were no other people ordering, yet it still took 15 minutes for our food to come out. And when it did, my chicken was SO oily. SO SO SO oily. Dripping in oil. There was a puddle of oil when I was trying to eat my fried chicken and it kinda made me feel ~not so great~ from how greasy and oily it was. Was it delicious? Yeah it was. Should it have been put onto something to dry a bit before serving, yes. The sides were all good. No complaints there. So 3.5 stars rounded down because the chicken was so undeniably oily and dat wait.. I can't even. Will I be back? Yeah, I will but I don't wanna come back when I'm starved maybe just when I'm getting hungry. read more

This place is the bomb! One of the best chicken sandwiches that i've ever had. Simply phenomenal! Went here for breakfast and I'm so glad we did. Place is very small, but they pack BIG flavors. I had the Ali. Nashville style hot chicken on a biscuit with an over easy egg and pickles. Out of this world! First bite was piping hot! The food was totally made to order fresh. It was spicy as well, but the Nashville style heat was not overpowering. I loved every bit of it. Even the need for water after every two bites LOL. Despite the incredible heat you were still able to taste every part of the sandwich. The flavors totally draw you in and you just keep wanting more. The chicken was super juicy and each bite had the right amount of egg and pickles. The only thing i desired was a slightly heavier biscuit (if that is even possible) to keep the sandwich together. It kinda got a bit messy attempting to pick up the sandwich, but in the grand scheme it really didnt matter because it was soooo good! Yummm Yum Yumm Yum-Yum! This is a new lunchtime favorite of mine. So far I have tried the Chicken Tenders, Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, Bone in chicken (herb and original) andddd the Mac & Cheese, chips, and Peach Cobbler....I've been quite a few times since making this location discovery. The chicken is all seasoned VERY WELL. The mac and cheese is very rich and creamy and the biscuit just adds happiness to every meal. I personally LOVED the peach cobbler, yet my co-workers all found it to be too sweet. The Roost offers a real "Bang for your Buck". Each meal comes with your choice of meat and two sides with desert as a side being one extra dollar. I always have left overs. ORDER AHEAD for this location. They fry all chicken to order, which is great for quality yet not so great for strict lunch times. The space is small, so you may want to be in and out as soon as possible. They offer limited patio seating outside if you want to walk over here and eat as well. If you work/live anywhere in the area, this place is worth the visit. read more

The biscuit is great. The Mac and cheese tasted like it it was made with something rancid. Green beans were the highlight of my meal which is unfortunate because it's a chicken joint. The coleslaw was lousy with mayo--so much so that I removed it and squeezed it out between napkins and then put it back on the sandwich. We wanted to love this place. We stopped by because it always seemed busy, people waiting outside and it had good reviews. The food was delicious. We weren't a fan of the green beans but that's personal taste. They tasted like they were pickled or similarly flavored. Our biggest gripe (which we actually didn't notice until another customer pointed it out) was that the kitchen staff weren't wearing masks (at all or properly). We also found a hair in our food. We understand that happens but my wife immediately loses her appetite. Maybe we'll give it another go post-COVID. read more

5 stars. This is the best fried chicken i had in a while. The chicken skin was crunchy and fried with crispy breading. That's the magic right there. You can get the regular version, but i recommend the spicy chicken. I easily ate half a chicken and the biscuit in 5 min. Biscuit was good, but run of the mill. Anyways, the chicken was just amazing. You have to order it yourself to see. The resturant is on a corner (i think this one is the second location) and without any seating for large parties. More of a take out place. Came here on a Monday night with my boyfriend and daughter and our food was not good at all. The chicken tasted like it was cooked in old oil, the batter was really burnt, so I had to take all the breading off of the chicken and my biscuit was burned all around. We had gone to the other location previously and that place was amazing, great seating, board games to play, and friendly staff. Today was so unexpected, the outside seating was right next to the huge garbage bins, so you got the smell of old trash and fried chicken. Then our food was bad. Absolutely amazing - ordered the spicy chicken sandwich on biscuit with an extra biscuit, side of mac and cheese, green beans, and chococlate chip bread pudding. The only negative part was they forgot to pack our chipotle ranch for takeout, but even still, the food was incredible. The mac and cheese and biscuit is a must get. The sandwich was incredible - I would recommend getting it with cheddar cheese. I want to try the nashville hot next time because the medium hot/spicy chicken wasn't hot. Can't say we'll be back. In the area, we walked in and ordered, the place empty but I swear it was easily a half hour before we got our to-go. Do note that in case you're put off by music with the n word, you'll be hearing it often while you wait. Service isn't warm and fuzzy. Got a couple original half birds, mac and cheese, green beans, and biscuits. The breast that I grabbed literally only had three small bites on it. My sweetheart gave me most of his which still was maybe an additional four bites. Where's the chicken? Was it good? Eh. It was ok. I've had way better, that's for sure. The chicken was fried near burnt, more of a breadcrumb type coating, and not terribly flavorful all around. Meh, nothing special about it, unfortunately. The mac was heavy-handed on the jalapeño and was the dry type, not creamy and gooey; boo mac and cheese foul. The green beans were cooked to within a millimeter of their wee lives and had a strong vinegar thing going on. The best part of the meal were the biscuits even though they weren't stellar. We ordered the Nashville chicken and biscuit sandwich, Mac & cheese, and the bread pudding. The Nashville chicken is the spiciest they have. The spice level was perfect - damn spicy but in a very flavorful way. Chicken was well made and not too greasy. The biscuit was pretty basic but complemented the chicken well. Love me some fried chicken. The Roost has been on my list to check out and decided to check out the River West location due to the closeness of the downtown area. First off, the interior is tiny. It can probably fit up to 6-8 people. So good luck trying to get a seat if it's not packed. Second off, expect a decent amount of wait time on your chicken. It's not like Popeyes, KFC where you just walk in, the chicken is pre made and they dump the chicken in the buckets. This place actually seems to make their fried chicken on the spot! So beware of waiting for your chicken! Now onto the chicken. I decided to get the 1/2 chicken. They allow you to get 2 different flavors so I decided to do the original and the Nashville hot. For sides I got the Mac and Cheese and potato chips. The chicken is very fresh tasting. Straight from the fryer so beware it's HOT! The meat is very tender. The original was good with flavor but the Nashville Hot was exploding with flavor. The pepper and spices got me coughing and almost choking at one point but I will not let that deter me from enjoying this chicken. It was really really good! I enjoyed it a lot, I remember when I went to Gus' Fried Chicken, felt it was underwhelming, along with the Budlong in the Revival Hall, but Roost Carolina Kitchen is one I will remember. The Mac and Cheese was solid. I love cheesy cheese so if you do too, you will like it. The chips were decent too, nothing special to be honest. All in all really solid place. Small space, big taste. The Roost has a very small front area that is mainly for ordering and a few window stools for eating. There are a couple of outdoor tables for the days with nicer weather. I did not see a public bathroom so keep that in mind (even if you just need a hand wash - things could get messy). The chicken sandwich was better than average - but I wasn't super impressed. I think this may have been the wrong time to eat because the biscuit was awesome and the look was great but I wasn't feeling it. I think my chicken breast may have needed a little more cleaning/trimming before it was prepared since I had a couple of "stringy" bites that were tough to bite through. I also traveled a small bit (~20 min) with the sandwich before eating which allowed it to really soak its box and cause part of the biscuit to fall apart. While that wasn't exactly ideal I couldn't eat it straight away due to its temperature (I'm sensitive to temp apparently, though). That may mean there is a kind of limbo for perfection or I may have just visited at the wrong time. I'd definitely give some of the other sandos a shot and can't really fault them much - it seems like the pieces are all there for it to be a tasty sammie. The sides were pretty great though. The mac 'n cheese was creamy and delicious. The size wasn't huge but was OK for a single serving. The cobbler was freaking awesome and worth the trip on it's own. I've gotta give The Roost another shot - but I'll be sure to bring a wet wipe and an appetite.... if nothing else I've gotta save room for that cobbler! read more

This place was so yummy! My boyfriend is obsessed with this place so when we were in the area he brought me with him! The mudslide boozy shake was freakin to die for! We both got spicy chicken sandwiches with the buttermilk biscuits. My mouth is watering just remembering the flavor of those biscuits. Our sides were: the Mac and cheese (pretty good), peach cobbler (not bad) and the bread pudding.....DELISH!! Lastly you have to try the homemade sweet tea. The best I've had in awhile! My only critiques if I had to leave any... The chicken is huge in the sandwhich and demolishes the biscuits while you try to keep everything together. Ok I love their food. It's amazing and at an excellent price. I had to remove a star because they are so slow. Not because they're busy.....I have no idea what takes so long. If you call, they'll tell you 20 min, and you'll have to wait 10 minutes if you show up after 30. That's just the way it goes. This tiny restaurant on a triangular corner way off on a side street in Chicago has some of the best fried chicken around. It's cooked to order so you'll have to wait a bit. I had a two piece original (mild)dark meat meal with potato chips made in house and "cucumber coleslaw". The chicken was very nicely seasoned with who knows what, dark crispy skin, and moist inside. The chips were fantastic and cucumber coleslaw sounded intriguing but was pretty unremarkable. It was a standard more or less bland cabbage coleslaw with a couple slices of cucumber mixed in. The chicken and chips alone were worth the trip but I'll try a different side dish the next time. UBER DRIVER ALERT : it's so tiny it doesn't have a public restroom. read more

All of the food was excellent and the service was prompt and friendly. Deducting one star because the sides seemed like very small portions. We ordered the whole chicken meal, which comes with 3 sides. Based on the amount of chicken and the fact that they included 4 sets of silverware, one might think this is enough food for a family. However, I wouldn't considered the sides to be enough for even 2 people. The coleslaw came in what looked like a sauce dip cup and we only received 1 biscuit, despite the side order saying biscuits (plural with an s). We ended up going back to order extra sides to ensure we had enough. All in all, worth a visit, just make sure you plan for enough sides. read more
