Maxwell Mansion is a wedding venue, motel and a cocktail bar. I was here mostly for the cocktail…read morebar, but I did get a tour of the mansion and grounds. The mansion was built in 1856, making it the first mansion in Lake Geneva. The estate has been completely redone but charming details were kept. Along with a mansion where you can book a room, Maxwell also includes beautiful gardens, lounges, outdoor fireplaces, a heated pool, croquet and bocce ball. There is also a separate area in the back with motel rooms. Like I said, I was there for a lil' drink. There's a bar inside the mansion (Apothecary Bar) with all kinds of medical and druggist paraphernalia, with the space being a tribute to Dr. Philip Maxwell. But it's the speakeasy, which is accessible outside in the front of the house, that you'll want to visit. Ask for the password inside the mansion, and they will let you into a dark, below-ground bar. It's all decorated in prohibitionist flyers, and even the bartenders are dressed up in period costumes. It's a really cool and unique bar in Lake Geneva.

Focusing the review on the apothecary bar. You need to know the password to get in the speakeasy. A few days after we visited the speakeasy, we went in to try the apothecary bar to get some food and drink. A friendly helpful bartender, explained all their creative cocktails, shared the pub food that they offered, and answered questions. We ordered a flatbread pizza and a spinach artichoke dip as well as a couple of cocktails. They served us at a table where we sat on a couch in a room just across the hall and were quite comfortable. There are other rooms where you can go - not much seating in the actual apothecary bar.

Service was pleasant enough but s-l-o-w. Restaurant was not busy but there was one large party of about a dozen which seemed to overwhelm the two servers. For the entire time we were there we didn't see any front of house staff (manager, host, bussers) other than two servers. Cleanliness was poor. We were there for over an hour and tables near us were not cleared or cleaned at all. Dirty dishes with leftover food sitting on them for the duration of our meal. Food all over the floor. Not an appetizing atmosphere. All-in-all poor value for the money.

That is one of my favorite dishes at most Italian restaurants. This looked like boiled chicken breasts, no color at all. The "lemon" sauce was like water and did not taste like lemon at all. More like vinegar. The "grilled"asparagus was sitting in the water and tasted boiled, not grilled. Mashed potatoes were decent, but sitting in a bowl of watery sauce did not help. Do not order this if you are expecting traditional Piccata. The angel hair pasta with "marinara" sauce my husband ordered was very bland, it was more like canned regular tomato sauce stirred into pasta...no joke. We wonder if there is a different owner, and cook. The nice young man who was our server was very good. We will not be back, and that is sad aswe liked it before.

Mars is a gem in Lake Geneva. The views are incredible, especially if you can grab a spot…read moreoverlooking the lake around sunset. The atmosphere is old supper club vibes and relaxing making it a great spot out after a lake day. What really stood out were the Wisconsin old fashions - brandy, sweet These were some of the best I've had in Wisconsin. The food was great for the prices and really appreciate what they are doing so well. There is NO reservations and the wait will be at least an hour. Be ready to wait. Fortunately they have a bar on the lower deck overlooking Lake Como to have a drink while you wait. Also they have a boat cruise that docks right at Mars to take while waiting. If you are driving here, parking is not good. You will have to park far away and most near by lots ban parking to Mars. Drivers be warned. Overall, the service was friendly and attentive, the food was excellent, and the experience exceeded expectations. Between the stunning lake views, great cocktails, and welcoming atmosphere, Mars is a must-visit whenever you're in Lake Geneva. Highly recommend!

Classic Wisconsin humble yet oh-so-perfect hole-in-the-wall supper club…read more We came on a Christmas time Friday. The place was packed. We waited for 45 minutes, but it was absolutely worth it with live music and a Santa Claus walking around to entertain the kids. Tremendous bartenders and friendly staff made the wait short. Food was executed well with great sides and excellent cocktails. A solid fish fry with lots of options and a great coleslaw. My wife loved her ribs. This definitely feels like the sort of place that only locals know about and everyone is welcome. We would highly recommend.
