Love this market every time I'm in Maryland I like coming to Roots for my vegan supplies. Today we came to get some lunch and desserts. Everything was super yummy. I had the vegan tuna wrap and sweetie had the falafel wrap. We finished the meal with a mango lime vegan dessert. love the iced coffee too. This store reminds me of whole foods but better, I think they have more vegan stuff. I wish they would open a store like this in Fort Lauderdale. read more

I love Roots Market. I have been shopping here for many years 10 plus. People here are helpful and kind. I just got some vegan thanksgiving things of pecan pie, field roast halzenut and cranberry roast, carrot cake cupcakes, squash today. I just tried one of the Plant Perks dip of Garlic and herb with black pepper crackers and it hit the spot for sure. Also stocked up on my favorite holiday chocolate bars Nutcracker Brittle from Theos. it is always a fun field trip to go to Roots for the new items and my old favorites. read more

This is like a tiny Whole Foods, but even better! There were so many different sampling stations. It is unusual to be offered fruit samples anywhere, but the strategy worked and it made me add fresh pineapple to my shopping list. There is a hot / salad bar which looked fresh and inviting. Small aisles, so it can get a bit crowded, but people seemed to be pleasant enough and were gracious to each other. Another excellent touch is they have a very small seating area which is a nice place to rest for a few minutes. read more

I'm sort of blown away by this place. If it wasn't for the horrific parking and lack of a real fish department, this would be my go to place. It will have its spot in my grocery rotation though! I only wandered in because I was going to a neighboring store and didn't want to spend my day driving around. I figured, I could spend a bit more on groceries since my list wasn't super long. Well, I did end up spending a bit more, but not because the prices were over priced. Yes, some things were, but a lot of great deals can be found even on every day staples. Produce was excellent and fresh, cheeses had a good variety. The downsides are the small foot print makes for creative lay outs (think trader joes) but I could get used to that. Some every day items (my wife wanted Ritz) aren't there. And, as I said, parking and lack of a fish department are a slight turn off- but its all more than made up for. Mostly though, the staff was the biggest shining point. They were helpful, available and incredibly friendly. read more

Roots is one of my favorite markets. When I'm in MD, I always make a stop and stock up on groceries. They carry alot of up to date new trending brands, particularly on vegan foods. Produce can be pricey but they have great sales. They host a vegan event once a year and organic avocados were on sale for 5 for $5! They are also located next to Great Sage, an amazing vegan restaurant. One last thing, Roots, please open one or two up in Virginia! read more

Roots is like Disney World for vegans. I've only been once during their annual Vegan Fest (which I enjoyed greatly... despite its seemingly small size, so many vendors offer samples/information, making for a fun day). I browsed the aisles afterwards and felt shocked at the sheer variety offered. Roots Market offers literally every vegan/health conscious/allergen product I've ever seen previously in my life and MORE. there were so many things I wanted to purchase, but given that I live an hour away, I rejected all of my perishable desires. There seemed to be plenty of staff members eager to share their expertise. In addition, I believe that most shops in the shopping center are owned by roots (such as Great Sage restaurant, RED wine shop, & Nest home goods). My friend and I stopped here to check it out after a yummy lunch at Great Sage. They offered a lot of great looking produce and unique items. I saw shredded coconut "bacon" that was even vegan. I saw samples throughout the store which is a bonus in my book. I was too full from my lunch to partake though. I didn't buy anything because I live far away from the store. Oh boy, do I love this market or what? I have been here so many times, I am not sure why I haven't reviewed it... no matter, no time like the present! When you walk into this market, you see the beautiful display of produce and are immediately happy that the world's challenges have melted away from your mind because all you see are delicious fruits and vegetables for you to purchase and take home. These local, sustainable and organic choices are so beautiful, you may forget your budget and buy one of everything. They tend to have local everything, so that is a great benefit if you can't always get to your local farmers' market, farm or orchard. After the produce, you'll notice many bulk items like nuts and dried fruit, snacks and grains in high variety. There is also some lovely coffee choices. Keep walking and you'll see some refrigerated items to your liking. They even have a salad bar and cooked bar for instant food offerings (that you may eat in your car as you drive away? Just saying... it could happen), which is right next to a refrigerated area of prepared foods from Roots itself and other local food creators. Great choices if you don't want to cook or are so hungry that you need food asap. Keep walking and you'll see an amazing bakery selection from Roots itself- nicely marked as wheat free and/or vegan here and there. They have a lovely selection of bath and body products that are natural and/or organic. Expect a huge selection of your favorite foods throughout the store- snack foods like cereals, chips and cookies, staples like canned veggies and beans, sauces, pastas and rices, and frozen foods like vegan pizza, fake meat and fruits, etc. There is a gluten-free section in the store, too. Also, you can find some bakery items/ baking products abounding in the aisles, from flours to sweeteners, it's here. If you're looking for it, you will find it here. Then of course, there are the samples. In the layout of the store, I can get lost very easily in order to better peruse their offerings. Along the way, they have samples. They have fresh produce samples. They may have a beverage sample - local coffee with non-dairy creamer? They often have dairy/ cheese/ bread samples, snack (nuts, chips) samples and once in a while, some baked goods (cupcakes?) sampled. Staff is cool - and it's neat to see pics around the store of staff members with their favorite items. Prices are competitive. Go, sample, shop, be happy. Yum. read more

The original Roots is one of the better stocked natural/health food stores I've seen. Their selection of foods for special dietary needs is hard to beat, and they've got a variety of bulk items as well. Prices run high, but no worse than some of its bigger competitors. If this place weren't 2 hours away from my home in Pennsylvania, it would be my main grocery store. Like many others have noted, this place has a lot of Whole Foods items but at a lower price. My husband and I swing through Clarksville, when we make occasional trips to DC from Philadelphia, because there's a famous vegetarian restaurant in the same complex as Roots Market. That's how we ended up finding Roots about a year ago. This place is a mecca for anyone trying to eat nutritionally and/or plant-based. I've never seen so many Gardein product anywhere, even in a gigantic Whole Foods near my home in the Philadelphia Metro. The tea section rivals any I've seen in a single grocer anywhere. I had to purchase a tin of Republic of Tea that I hadn't seen at home. I also picked up some aloe juice, the same brand I buy at home, for less at Roots because it was on sale. Aloe juice on sale? I'm shocked in a good way. I also found some brown rice snaps and a vegan version of Nutella made by Justin's. Finally, it was close to Thanksgiving and I was happy to see that along with the traditional non-veg Thanksgiving prepared foods, there was a section of prepared vegan Thanksgiving foods. If I lived nearby, I would be hitting this store up for all my food needs. read more

Roots has a much larger array organic products, including raw, vegan and gluten-free, than I've seen at other stores. There really is nice variety in this store. There's a large case of ready made/ready to eat items that are gluten-free and vegan-raw which is pretty impressive. In addition, they have a decent selection of products that are made locally. This store also has a very nice bulk section with nuts, different types of rice, snacks, etc. My only gripe about this place is price. I guess compared to other organic stores, the pricing may be okay, but it's hard to shop here if you're on a strict budget. Last month the SO was making a special pumpkin stew and needed some really specific ingredients. Something called a celery root, some vegetable stock, some super tofu that would taste like meat, and two or three other things that were so specific that I forgot them. I was sent to Roots because it's a gourmet grocery store that was sure to carry all this stuff I had never even heard of. Seriously, I used Google to find photos of the stuff before I even got there so I could identify it. Roots has an amazing selection. Everything was there. The staff was super friendly and has that weird encyclopedic knowledge of where every single little thing was in the store. Plus, it really smelled great! Where I grew up we had a farm co-op where you could buy stuff. The smell inside of Roots reminded me of that place. You're probably wondering, "Hey Frank L, if they're so awesome why the 4 stars vs 5"? Well kids, it's because they're really expensive. They are at least as expensive as that other really well known specialty grocery store (I try and not mention other businesses in myYelp reviews), if not moreso. Hey, maybe that's the price you pay for all that selection, but you've been warned. If you're looking for something special, or if you have super specific dietary requirements then this is the place to shop. Just be sure to bring a truckload of cash too. I love Roots! Everything about this place is spot-on. The store is very clean and easy to navigate. The vegan options are never-ending. They have an ENTIRE section of vegan cheeses and a wide selection of yummy vegan desserts. Shout-out to the creator of the, "vegan dirt cup". IT IS HEAVENLY! I've been going to Roots in Clarksville for years because we stick to organic food. It's cheaper than stores in Columbia if you want organic. However, they only get 3 stars because their meat selection is incredibly small. It didn't use to be this way, but they've slowly shrunk it down and it's hard to get a variety of meat now for the week. They might claim they are conscious of their sources, but I think they're just pushing the vegan agenda. We grow our own beef and lamb, but we need fish, pork, and chicken. It's nearly impossible to buy those things there so now I have to get produce from Roots and meat from a farmer on woodbine. read more

My favorite grocery store, though I wish there were more locations besides the two they have. Probably about the size of a trader joe's without out the madness. All of the grocery essentials, including lots of vegetarian/vegan friendly items. Items are reasonably price and definitely cheaper than whole foods. Their baked items are divine, a lot of which are made in house. They have vegan options as well! They have fun little events all the time and are invested in their local communities, which I appreciate. All of their cashier have always been friendly and helpful. They also accept apple pay! Which was so clutch when I realized that I forgot my wallet when arriving at the register, whoops! read more

I don't think I have ever shopped here until recently. I know they've been open for quite some time and they are located very conveniently for many in Howard County. I was able to find everything I needed: evening primrose oil, raspberry leaf tea, coffee, and prenatal vitamins rather quickly. The shelves were organized neatly, and the staff was helpful. I spent around $ 53 but I expected to as markets like this aren't inexpensive. They offer like Whole Foods to donate or keep your bag discount (for bringing your own bag). You get a wooden coin and then deposit the donated coin into the charity of your choice. I'll be back for sure! read more

The main disappointment with this store was the produce. There were a number of items that were in visibly bad shape (mold on fruit, packaged spinach wilted to the point of becoming liquid at the edges) and it was a bit difficult to find in good condition the items we needed. Bananas were in a big, bruised pile. On the positive side, the bread seems to be very good. (A number of types of bread looked good. I am happy with the one we bought.) I was fine with the selection of non-perishables. Another negative is the price. We felt that some of the items were higher than the same items at Mom's. read more

I always buy birthday cakes from the bakery, but the last one I purchased...was not good at all. It was half vanilla and half chocolate. The chocolate part was great, but the vanilla was gross! My favorite grocery store, a vegan haven. I can't comment on the prices, but the selection is fantastic-- everything a vegan could want or need. This is my #1 favorite grocery store, even above MOM's, Wegmans, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's. Their prepared foods are all (?) vegan-- the spanakopita with tzatziki is my favorite. It's addictively good, and you wouldn't even know the tzatziki is dairy-free. They have a great selection of non-dairy cheeses with more SKUs than any other store I've seen. More brands and a bigger variety within each brand (right now Miyoko's Creamery classic double cream chive is my favorite, and I'm an equal-opportunity consumer of non-dairy nacho cheeses). And they have a great vegan chocolate selection (right now HU with cashew butter is my favorite) and a great frozen selection. I love their vegan artisanal tea sandwich platter-- my family of 4 polished off an entire tray on Mother's Day and then we had to buy a second platter to take home with us because the first was so good. When I die I want these served at my funeral, and I want to die from overindulging in these. Death by vegan tea sandwiches. Yes please. Especially that apple + 'brie'. Mmmm. read more

Okay well first of all this supermarket is expensive as fuck. The coconut water costs 6 bucks a bottle. I bake bread for a living so you know I can't afford it. At the same time, this supermarket is great for people who don't want to spend money. There are so many free samples. After my friend and I dug a hole for four hours and looked for a pot of gold, we ventured to the Great Sage restaurant because we were sort of hungry; however, the dinner items were like 20 bucks each. Too expensive! So we gallivanted over to Roots to eat a free dinner. The eclectic free samples include all of the following: grapes, salsa, cheese, guacamole, wasabi peas, ice cream, trail mix, popcorn, cheese puffs, chocolate, peanut butter crisp, tofu salad, egg-free curry salad, feta and tomato dip, dried green beans, corn, flaxseed chips, graham crackers, and cinnamon pretzels. We didn't feel guilty for only eating the free samples, but we still purchased an apple and an avocado. The only apples they sell here are organic Gala apples from Argentina for $2.50 a pound. One apple costs one dollar. This place is a vegan's dream. It's also a gluten-free person's dream. Why are only rich people gluten-free? It doesn't make any sense. The staff is really friendly and helpful getting whatever you need and providing recommendations. Oh Roots, I love you so! My boyfriend and I drive from Arlington, VA to go to this place quite often. I love that there are so many veg-friendly options at prices lower than Whole Foods and with a produce section that is much larger than my local MOM's. I love that they carry Sweet and Sara marshmallows, which are an obsession of mine, as well as local treats from Sticky Fingers, Sweet n Natural and Emily's desserts. I love the Roots brand granola and liquid B-12. I love that I can eat at Great Sage and shop at Nest before or after getting my groceries. In short, I adore this place. LOVE this place, a favorite of mine along with Mom's! Same concept and idea, but Roots carries things that are SO hard to find! I had been waiting for this vegan cheese from the west coast to come to the area, and looked EVERYWHERE. Found out through the cheese company that Roots had it! Drove all the way from DC to get the cheese and found great other products! I love that they have an abundance of vegan products especially from their very own bakery! They carry vegan challah bread and their vegan muffins are pretty good. Prices are good and reasonable compared to Whole Foods and some of the co-ops in my area. The best part is they are right next to one of my favorite vegan restaurants - Great Sage - so extra bonus! Employees are super nice and helpful! Wish they had another store closer to DC! read more

One of my favorite food stores. The produce and meat selection is not vast, but what is there is high quality and reasonably priced. The herbal section IS big, but I don't use it. The dry goods and frozen stuff takes up most of the store, so that could be a plus or minus depending on your taste. It seems, though, that whatever they carry I enjoy eating, and it's such an eclectic mix of foods. I've found prices to be excellent. Recent example: Reed's Ginger Beer 4pk for $3.99, at Whole Foods for $6.99! You can't win that big every time with every product, but hey. read more

This is a great market if you are vegan or appreciate specialty/interesting products. Roots has everything that I've always been looking for, but unable to find. For example, Siete chips. I can't find them in another store other than online....until Roots. For a vegan this place is heaven, for someone who eats gluten free, there are options, but not as plentiful. That being said, I think that it's still better than the selection in most specialty grocery stores. This place has some of the nicest produce that I've seen and employees are constantly tending over it. I came on a buys saturday and they were doing their best to keep up. They have a hot bar and a salad bar and my recommendation would be to come early. By the time I got there around 2pm it had been very picked over. Everything smelled delicious but I didn't get anything from there since I didn't want the ends. I ended up with many specialty products that I've only been able to find here chips, keto chocolate, frozen gluten free bread and fermented dairy products (Nancy's for those of you who are looking for the brand). I enjoy going to Roots. There are many products I can't find at Giant and even some that they do have at Giant but are cheaper at Roots. I like the large selection of cosmetics, shampoo and soaps. Some of the natural products can be expensive, especially the organic produce. But organic produce is high everywhere. Another thing I like are the monthly sales and coupon booklets they have at the store. They even put coupons in envelopes next to the items for you. I think that is pretty nice of them. read more

My one negative interaction here was with an employee who said that the store would be getting a certain item, and then the store didn't seem to carry it. This was especially annoying since I drove down from Baltimore for said item. This is a long overdue review, as I have been shopping at Roots for a few years. I love that all of their fresh produce is organic, as that is the only kind of produce I buy. I also appreciate that they sell meat and dairy because I do buy those as well. A couple of years ago I asked if they would consider purchasing a motorized scooter with a basket to keep in the store. Larger chain stores have this, but I really wanted to shop at Roots regularly. I walk with crutches, so this would make it possible for me to shop independently. I was so excited when they agreed to purchase the scooter. I am now able to shop there independently on a regular basis. I love that they are willing to help when needed, but they also recognize the importance of people with disabilities having their independence. They are always willing to provide this balance and they do it with a sincere smile. Thank you, Roots! read more
