The hair cut was fine. Stylists are qualified. The booking system is a mess (don't forget to book your blow dry with a color or hair cut or you leave with wet hair - good luck finding the option, the front desk couldn't even help me find it). This last visit, checked in at 3:55 for my son's 4pm haircut with a level 1 stylist ($19). A few minutes later a girl walks in and they take her back. 4:30 I finally ask when he is going to be cut and the front desk lady disappears, then comes back to tell me oops, there was a mix up. They took the 4:30 girl in our place. Uhm, how does that happen? Did we have the same name? So at 4:45 they finally take my kid back for his cut with a different stylist, level 3. At checkout, front desk person tells me they will give me $10 off - of the stylist 3 price kid cut ($34). Uhm, no - we should pay the $19 we signed up for (and frankly should have gotten the $10 off that.) I just paid and left. I've been going there for about 8 years. So much turnover and the last three visits have not been impressive. Get it back together Roots. read more

They clearly have new people right out of beauty school here that have no clue how to do a fade. It looked like the lower half of my head was done with a weed wacker. Patchy as f*ck. This was the worst salon . I asked for a light brown and she gave me a bright red. She then cut my hair crooked and then they said they'd give me a redo and they couldn't get there red out they just turned it even darker into a blackish red. My hair is fucked , no thank you roots salon . I spoke to the manager she was very rude and said that she'd only refund me half and accused me of using box dye which I have never done or used in my life. I have been a faithful client to this salon for over 10 years and today is where we part ways. Earlier in the year the salon switched from the Redken and Pureology product lines to the inferior Paul Mitchell and Colorproof lines. I was very disappointed but willing to give it a try. I have had my highlights and lowlights done three times with the Paul Mitchell line and NO more! A short 3 weeks after having full highlights and lowlights done my hair looks horrible and I called to ask if they would be able to special order the Redken products to use at my next appointment. The receptionist talked to my stylist who said she was unable to do that and the receptionist then claimed she would have a manager contact me after I told her that my sister (who is also a client that I had referred) had a stylist that special orders her Redken color and has been using that on her. It has been over a week and no call! The new products the salon has switched over to are no where comparable to the previous products they carried. When I have paid full price for a full head of highlights and lowlights that looks like a 3 month of grow out after only 3 weeks, I say the new products SUCK! My hair has gotten progressively duller and more damaged after each recent visit. I enjoy my stylist, it's the products they now use that have determined my decision to look elsewhere! Something that has bothered me for several years in regards to this salon is the constant revolving door of employees it seems to have. Rather than sending me (a client) solicitations for employment, maybe notifications of upcoming specials, promotions and events would be more beneficial. Why do I literally have to walk into the salon to discover current, in addition to upcoming specials? Birthday special? What a joke, why send it mid month?I believe the product switch to Paul Mitchell probably has something to do with possibly having first dibs at nabbing the best new grads from the Paul Mitchell beauty school to fulfill that revolving door void when maybe concentrating on finding established, experienced stylists would be a far better business option. You may notice that Roots does have a fairly decent Yelp star reputation, don't be fooled! There are plenty of one star reviews for inept stylists which are then bolstered by 5 star (mostly not recommended) reviews. If you will, please note that the majority of these 5 star reviews are Yelpers that have posted only that one review and keep in mind that quite a few are employed by Roots! If you are a newbie to hair coloring and using a groupon or whatever new talent $49 special, Roots maybe for you. If you are looking for a luscious, vibrantly colored head of gorgeous hair that you spend a pretty penny on, I suggest you look into another salon that offers QUALITY products that are represented and reflected on the best billboard, YOU! read more

I used to drive to janesville (almost two hours for my wax) and I went to roots today to get a wax with Brittany and she is absolutely incredible. I'm never making the drive to janesville again! Brittany is the girl to go to here in Milwaukee!!!! ( all the staff is very kind and attentive but she is absolutely above and beyond.) Such a fun person to talk to and she makes SURE to get all the hair down there and!! That you are comfortable throughout the whole process. It reminds me of Vici Beauty school...except for this are beauty school graduates ;). I got a really good deal from__ Groupon for only $40 for a color/trim/style. Also, I was given some coupons for any friends who would set up an appointment w/ Bradley/Stephanie...this included $15/off any service, and I would also be receiving the same deal after they had redeemed theirs, on my next visit! Horrible haircut. I had taken my daughter for a cut and style. The stylist was supposed to be 'level 2' but according to their website, she is 'level 1'. To be honest, Half of the problem was my daughter. She had no idea what she wanted so she gave free reign to the stylist. So the haircut was short at the back but longer in the front, particularly the hair framing her face. BUT the stylist cut unevenly so that the front hair on the left side was much, much longer than the right. $42 dollars wasted. I don't know, is this a new hair style that youngsters are wearing? But my daughter's a teenager and she must live and learn. Needless to say, we will NOT be returning. read more

Daughter has bleach on her head before being told about the service and it's over &100.00 per hour...3 hours later and you can see a line, the color is t matched and parts of her head gave the green chlorine tint. I absolutely love this salon! I have very rarely been back to a place more than once or twice, but I have been coming here for almost a year now and I could not be happier. Jessica is absolutely AMAZING with what she does. I am in the process of lightening my hair and it is still in beautiful condition with little to no damage. (Following recommendations and using quality products helps too) She is excited about what she does and gets you excited about the change or new look you are looking for. I have never left feeling less than 150% satisfied. I see her every 6-8 weeks for color and I love my time there. I now take my daughter who is 8 to see her as well and Jessica treats her like a star and makes her feel important and beautiful, too! I had been searching for a place to cut my boys hair after many bad experience at discount places. I finally decided to call Roots to see if anyone could see my two boys hoping that maybe the place I love could do something that didn't make my boys look like major dorks. Noah was available and man does she do great work! My boys (9 and 8) have seen her twice and she listens to what we are looking for and engages in the boys, too. I love the option of getting a mani or pedi while my hair processes. I love the produces that the salon uses. Pureology is simply amazing and worth every penny. I don't mind traveling here one bit. They got hair dye on the collar of my sweater. Refused to compensate me for this. Wanted the front fixed because they had a thick strand not colored, and highlighted instead. Instead of fixing just that area, the girl redid the whole thing and changed the highlights. So instead of subtle and tiny, she made them all thick and bold - rather like skunk stripes. Then I was told they could fix that or they would melt my hair. Said I needed to now grow it out. I did and went back. They refused to fix or redo or refund. Never went back since. Still have the photos of my ruined sweater too. read more

I've been coming to this salon for years. My usual gal had moved so it's been a while since I got my hair cut. I booked online with an apprentice (which I didn't know at all or wouldn't have booked with her). This is the worst haircut I've ever had in my 24 years in this earth. When she blew me out it looked like I had come out of a tornado. It looked so horrible and NOBODY said a word. I went home to straighten it and was in tears. My hair was extremely uneven. She cut choppy "bangs" into my hair which I NOT asked for. And took literal chunks out of my hair. I went to the Tosa location to have it fixed (same day because it was that horrible). It took two stylists to try and fix what she did. It still looks horrendous and I've never felt so horrible about myself. My hair used to be something everyone pointed out. It was so long when I came in, now it's way shorter than I wanted and I have super choppy and ugly bangs. I wish I just never came in. i have given up on this salon twice. i used to come to get hair coloring by missy, she did good work , was quite expensive but i quickly got left to any of the entry level stylists and abandoned by my high dollar stylist. i asked to be contacted by the owner manager and after trying to do that three times i gave up. i tried to see if the salon was better since i had been there and just got rude non help from the desk staff and could not even get info if missy still even worked there. i would only rate the salon as not worth attempting to deal with. i started going there with a groupon but they were never able to even perform the service that i paid for that got me to the salon. i guess i should have realized more quickly that this salon needs a remake themselves. read more

I went for low lights as my hair is almost white. She went too dark and the color took on hues of purple and blue. Very unnatural and ugly. I went back and the shampoo BLEACHED my whole head - now it was pumpkin orange and straw. The girl was pulling out my hair trying to comb through it until I took the comb away. The manager said, "no worries, we'll get it how you wanted it." After 4 hours and 4 different people working on it, I left with yellow hair - not what I wanted. Manager never checked back. I called back for area Roots manager. She sent me to Tosa salon where the color was corrected. My hair is long and it is ruined. It's like straw, I've lost a lot trying to get through it even after leaving conditioner on 15 minutes after every washing. read more

Over 6 hours spent in the salon for an over-processed partial foil and trim. Bleach was left on my hair (without being checked) for over an hour. I had to personally insist that the stylist (or someone) check and rinse my hair. My white locks were fixed only after I insisted to speak with a manager, and it be corrected today. (She wanted me to come back another time.) No offer of a discount or refund... Cost = $90.00 and a receipt noting I could fill out a survey about my experience. read more

I bought a Groupon for Roots Salon, in which I got a haircut and full highlights for $49. Great deal! When you walk in, everyone is very pleasant and friendly. They'll take your coat, check you in and offer you something to drink, like water, coffee, tea or hot chocolate. The decor is very hip and modern. They seem to offer every kind of service you could want: massage, facial, mani/pedi, eyebrow wax, plus, of course, hair services. I met stylist, Erika, who helped me pick out color and did my foils. When she was just finishing up my highlights, she asked if they could paint my nails for me. "It's complimentary.", she said. She told me I needed 45 minutes for my color to process, so why not get my nails done for free?! Score!! I move over to the manicure area and meet Angela, who is also very nice and friendly. I picked out a sparkly pink color, and she painted my nails. Next, was back to Erika to take out the foils, wash, rinse, cut and blowdry. I love the color we picked, and I love the cut she gave me! As a new client, I was given 3 coupons: 20% off any product purchase, 50% off any spa service and $10 off your next visit when you book an appointment. Well, I was so happy with my experience, that I certainly booked another appointment! read more

If I could give a lower rating I would. This was by far one of the worst experiences I have ever had. I did see one of the new girls but at the other places I have gotten my hair done I always see the new girls and I have never had an experience this bad. I brought in a picture of the hair color that I wanted that would be darker than what I currently had, and some how I ended up with streaky pearly blonde (almost white) highlights. I look like a white Siberian tiger. Because the newer stylist did not know what she was doing she kept consulting with a senior stylist, which if fine. However, when they would talk about my hair they would talk as if I wasn't even there. They never once asked if something was okay or if it was what I had in mind. at one point when the senior consultant was consulting (after she had already put the pearly blonde highlights in) they senior stylist said that really light and the new stylist said "yeah i decided to go lighter" so apparently my opinion did not matter at all. Now i have to live with streaky brown and pearly white hair. Also when it was time for her to cut my hair i asked for a lob and she kept saying she would have to cut it shorter than the length i wanted which was not true so she just trimmed it, no layer no face framing just a straight across trim. this entire experience took over 4 hours so by the time it was over I left and cried on my way home and I try to wear a hat at all times. hands down worst experience, i would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I brought my daughter to roots not once but twice to have her hair colored and both times the stylist blatantly ignored our request. The first time we paid $92 for some highlights and my daughter came out looking almost exactly like when she walked in we went home and she colors her own hair. Thinking that it wouldn't be possible to have two girls do the wrong thing I took my daughter back months later we wanted her tips colored and I go back to find she's doing foils. I had to insist on and stop her from what she was doing to get them to do an all over color. The original girl stopped working on my daughter and someone else picked up and here it is two weeks later and the color has all faded another waste of almost $100. My mom was a hairdresser and she was appalled to hear of this. I cannot even give roots one star. I emailed them and the nasty email response I got showed zero customer service ability. read more
