Oh my goodness! We haven't been back to Roppongi since they reopened but you can bet we'll be regulars now! Everything from the remodeled decor (absolutely gorgeous!) to the slimmed down menu (fewer choices but they definitely kept all the right menu options!) was amazing. Our waiter, Pim, couldn't have been more attentive - he was right there when we needed him & paced everything so that we were never had to look for him. We got a bottle of red blend and a few cocktails to start the evening. Alina was our server and gave us great service. Our Som provided us detail on the region of our blend. Food was also great. Big fan of Sammy's so couldn't wait to try their sister restaurant. It's beautiful inside and they have a nice variety of menu items. The crying tiger steak was our favorite - cooked well and the sauce had such a nice savory citrus flavor. The food comes out as it's ready so some dishes did take a while. Beautiful restaurant with a great atmosphere and attentive service. We were really excited about the Asian fusion concept, but the food didn't quite live up to the hype. We tried the hamachi taco and lobster dumpling--both were okay, not bad, but not memorable or standout dishes. The spicy toro roll didn't taste like toro at all, which was disappointing. The fried rice was the worst item we ordered; the rice was undercooked, and I can't believe it was served that way. The server was kind enough to remove it off our bill though. Overall, I love the idea of the menu and the creativity behind the dishes, but the execution left something to be desired. We sat outdoor on the covered patio for a Sunday evening dinner. The food was delicious, but the value is lacking.$25 for a dessert sundae with 2 scoops of ice cream??? Sure, it had pistachios, and maybe the chocolate sauce was made from some artisanal chocolate, but the menu didn't say so, so I assume not. Ridiculous! There were only 3 other tables occupied when we were there. Maybe it's due to the overpriced food? Also, there were 2 tables, one on each side of us , that sat unbussed, attracting flies. No one made any move to clear them for at least 20 minutes until we complained about the flies. Like I said before, the food was amazing, but the value and service were really lacking. HONEST REVIEW: Roppongi, an infamous Asian Fusion and Sushi spot in La Jolla, is FINALLY back after 10 years! The decor is stunning offering modern, coastal vibes and the ambiance was the perfect mix of fine dining and energetic. We were frequenters of Roppongi for their happy hour before they closed in 2015 and we were beyond excited to hear about their reopening. Their happy hour is still one of the best in San Diego offering all items on their Tapas menu at 50% off and great drink specials everyday on their patio from 3 - 5p.m. Unfortunately, their food just didn't hit the spot. It lacked flavor, items were overcooked, and some ingredients were lackluster (their chicken eggrolls were more like a vegetable eggroll). We ordered more than half of their Tapas menu and our favorite items were the fan favorite Polynesian Crab Stack, the Lamb Chops, and the Ube Cheesecake (not on HH). The service started out absolutely great but as they got busier, our server became bombarded and couldn't keep up. We ordered one last item around 4:50 and it didn't come out until almost 30 minutes later and it was just onion rings, so nothing crazy. On a positive note, their birthday sundae was extraordinary! The interior has beautiful aspects and potentially cozy romantic vibes depending on where you sit. Not a lot of patrons when we went on a weeknight. The restaurant is huge. There were spaces that were closed off not being utilized. Could house big parties and many more customers. We ordered nigiri toro, uni, yellow tail. Eggplant miso, the steak that you grill on the rock, crab salad tapa, and chicken satay. To be fair I only tried half the dishes and my partner tried all and decided the crab was decent but the rest was not something we would come back for. The nigiri tasted off. We did not finish our expensive sushi. I think that's why I drank the entire bottle of still Saratoga and monitored how I felt and I didn't want to risk it to continue on just in case. I had a few bites of the crab dish that is sort of a salad but it was not my speed. I love Vietnamese, Thai, and Japanese food. I'm just not sure these particular fusion flavors are my favorite. Service was okay. No smiles. I think it could've just been an off night for them as they work on the initial kinks. No questions to why so much food was left over. Just curt and to the point. Roppongi Restaurant & Lounge has returned to its ancestral home in downtown La Jolla by re-assuming the suite where it operated over a decade ago under the same ownership. The corner location was farther away from most of the foot traffic near the cove, however that also meant you had a better shot at finding open curbside parking. I did like the redesigned interior with neutral to dark tones and dimmed lighting. It made the ambiance feel more like a lounge. The central bar was near the entrance while a covered outdoor front patio provided additional seating beyond the main dining room. For a one-page menu, there was a lot of variety including a middle column featuring over two dozen kinds of Asian Tapas. Soups, entrees, noodles, fried rice, and dumplings made up the left column. The right column listed the Japanese items under nigiri, sashimi, and specialty rolls. The unfortunate aspect was the extraordinarily high pricing. I understand that rent must be expensive in this part of La Jolla, however it felt like Michelin-level charges were being assigned to ordinary fare (e.g. $21 for Pineapple Fried Rice). After mulling over the tapas choices, I veered towards the dumplings for a starter. The Shrimp Lemongrass was my pick. Four dumplings were served with mint, ginger, garlic, tobiko beurre blanc, and chive oil. The product had a good amount of filling, but the issue was the $17 price which meant each dumpling cost over four dollars. I don't know of another Asian eatery in town that charges more than three dollars per dumpling, let alone four. Even a serving portion of six dumplings would have still been costly. The other item I selected was the Pork Belly Drunken Noodles. It was one of the five listings in the noodles section and was tied for the least expensive at $33. A few pieces of pork belly were mixed with a base of flat rice noodles. A fried egg, Chinese broccoli, bell pepper, and Thai basil were the other ingredients. The serving vessel was a small round bowl with handles. The portion size was quite meager as you get twice as many noodles for about half the price at most local Thai eateries. The spiciness was moderate and tasted uneven as some bites had more heat. The service from the waitstaff was polite and efficient. The food quality was average at best, and the value was sad to say... not good. Perhaps diners who have deep pockets will not mind the premium pricing. While the return of Roppongi to La Jolla is positive news, I believe there are much better choices for pan-Asian cuisine in the SD area, hence my low rating. read more

Got to admit the place has been well done up and does have great ambiance The service was very good and staff were attentive. Yet, the food has a long way to go before anyone could accept the Michelin star pricing. Okay, if you want to pay $20 for a scallop then that's fair, but it has to have the right texture and taste good. We ordered several items including some egg plant which was good, onion rings which were excellent, lobster dumplings, which were dessert sweet. Dessert: the staff explained in some detail the sticky toffee pudding, a British favorite. However, then proceeded to tell us it was not available . The food: We asked our waiter for recommendations and based on those recs we ordered the crab stack, chicken wings, pork belly drunken noodles, and the crying tiger steak. The crab in the crab stack did not taste fresh, everyone that tried it felt that it had a fishy flavor. The chicken wings were ok, but lacking flavor. The pork belly drunken noodles were disappointing because the noodles themselves were really hard and the pork did not taste like belly, more like pulled pork. The crying tiger steak was probably the best dish. Others in our party also tried the short ribs and one of the sushi rolls and they said they weren't very good. The service: While friendly, there were some issues. We requested 2 orders of the steak and the waiter only put in one. When I asked what the cut of meat was, he didn't know. We also requested no cilantro on any of our dishes and still received them with cilantro. I think if you are used to eating tasty, authentic Asian food - then you will be disappointed by this restaurant. We are so happy that Roppongi has reopened after 10 years! We have dined twice now, once for dinner and once for happy hour. Our favorite tapas like the Mongolian duck quesadilla and Japanese hot rock were just as we remembered. The crab stack has also returned, though it wasn't as good as before. Other tapas we've tried are the crispy Vietnamese shrimp (good, but could use more shrimp to lettuce ratio, kahlua pork spring rolls (delicious and our favorite), hamachi tacos (tasty but small portion), and the ahi poke (also good). We also had the lobster dumplings and those were amazing. They are only available for dinner though. We've had great cocktails as well. The lychee martini is back and $2 off during happy hour. Service was very good for dinner. We walked in on a Monday night and didn't have reservations. We were seated right away. Our server was very attentive. Food was also brought out as it was prepared and was extremely fast. Service during happy hour (on the patio) was a little slow. It took some time for the server to get my drink and our food order. The food was brought out relatively quickly though once we finally ordered. On both occasions, a dish was brought out that we had already received. We obviously told them we already had our dish, but found it peculiar that this happened both times we dined. Pricing is high, so I'd recommend checking out happy hour first, though the full menu is not available. During happy hour, our drinks were not discounted, so we had to get them to correct that. I wanted to leave a review, as my first time here was not the best. But we went again last night, and although they didn't read the "preferences" (for a booth) in our reservation notes and didn't acknowledge our special occasion again, we still had a wonderful meal here and a great time! I see there are some negative reviews here for the food. That wasn't my experience. Not even close. The decor was beautiful and unique, the service was friendly and phenomenal, and the food, well... No exaggeration. Last night I had one of the BEST meals of my life. We started with my favorite soup in the universe, which I was thrilled to see on the menu -- Tom Kha - a Thai curry coconut broth with goodies floating inside. Listen. I have had Tom Kha soup many times before, and I can honestly say, this was the thickest and most delicious coconut soup I have ever had the pleasure of consuming. I could have stopped right there. Just bring me another bowl, and another! It was life-changing. Now it was time for appetizers. They wait until you're done with one before arriving with the next. Good idea. That way you can focus 100 percent on what you're inhaling. We started with the Polynesian STACK... a beautiful to behold combination of pea shoots, red onions, cucumber, tomato, mango, avocado, lump crab, peanuts, cilantro, and a spicy ginger-lime dressing. The waitress told me this was their most popular item and I could see why. The waiter said he'd be back to toss it for us, but he never came back so we did it ourselves. No big deal. It was so much fun to devour. Next up were Shrimp Lemongrass potstickers. This place is all about their sauces, and you could smell that sweet scented lemongrass from across the room. Wow. What a punch of flavor from that mint, ginger, garlic, tobiko beurre blanc, whatever that is, and chive oil. Next up was Indonesian Chicken satay - chicken marinated and served on long sticks marinated and served with the most incredible sauce-dressing as well as a side of (are you sitting down?) homemade potato chips. That's right. They give you a small bowl of extra dip to dunk them in. Heavenly. The chicken was marinated in a lemongrass peanut sauce that I wanted to bathe in. Finally, the Macadamia Nut Crusted Sea Bass was brought out in all of its mango chutney, bok choy, curry sauce glory. I've never seen or tasted such a splendid and generous dish. Again, it was all about the sauce. It was a WOW. They were out of this dish the first time we were here. I'm so glad they had it last night. It was incredibly tasty. There was no room in my tummy for dessert, but that didn't stop me. I got one anyway because...the description was intriguing. I have to say, however, the description didn't do justice to the taste. It's called Ube Cheesecake and it's unlike any cheesecake I've ever had. It's light and small in size, but it sits in a sauce of caramelized pineapple puree, toasted coconut, and fresh whipped cream. My head exploded in glee. I've never tasted anything so scrumptious. It's official. I've run out of adjectives to describe this meal. The good news is...the incredible food. The bad news is...I don't know that Roppongi is going to make it with the high prices and low traffic. I don't think I can afford to go back for dinner, but wait. There's good news for those of us short on change these things. The have an incredible Happy Hour menu that I hope to go back and enjoy...at 50% off the regular prices, including that STACK I mentioned. Many special items are available from 3-5 pm at 50% off including the Stack, Shrimp Lemongrass Dumplings, Chicken Egg Rolls, Spicy Shrimp, the chicken satay that I had, Japanese "Hot Rock" which is NY strip steak, chili ponzu, sesame goma sauce and cucumber sunomono. Don't ask me to translate. They also offer New Zealand BBQ Lamb Chops at 50% off as well as Hamachi Tacos, Crispy Vietnamese Shrimp, Ahi Poke, spicy salt and pepper chicken winks and crispy salmon. So there's plenty to choose from if you're willing to eat dinner earlier in the evening. I hope they stay open as it's a very special place. The flavors in everything were incredible. Long overdue review! Shoutout to Roppongi Restaurant and Lounge for labeling vegan/vegetarian options. They even made me a veganized dessert option which I didn't even ask for. How sweet is that? I've been here a few times (date nights included) and recently returned after their long hiatus. The new space is modern, minimalist, and lounge-y! The bar seemed buzzing and the bartenders were very engaging. They have an enclosed patio and dog-friendly. Vegan dishes I've tried were the Quinoa Chaufa with shiitake mushroom (my favs), bell pepper, bok choy, bean sprouts, scallion, and red quinoa. Yum! I usually make something similar at home but this was a nice blend of salty and savory. The Miso-Glazed Eggplant had cucumber, frisee, chuka salad, and sesame. I love eggplant but this didn't really blow me away. For the price, I expected more. The Hot and Spicy Cucumber dish was refreshing and chilled with a good blend of hot and sour! I enjoyed this. I always have to get their edamame and it had a nice spice to it! Service at dinner was excellent. Walked in with and without reservations on different occasions and was seated right away. Happy Hour service seemed slower, but once we ordered, the food came out fast. Cocktails were solid. I loved their lychee martini ($2 off at happy hour). These are creepers though. The lychee fruit is one of my favs so it's a must! Overall: great ambiance, friendly staff, street parking only, and appreciated the vegan options. The salt and pepper chicken wings were decent and great to share. I ordered the Japanese High Ball and really enjoyed this as my cocktail. Came to check this place out during their second week of re-opening after 10 years. Apparently, they used to be a beloved staple in La Jolla before they closed in 2017ish. We came for their patio happy hour (daily 2-5pm) for 50% off appetizers/tapas. We tried a few things and here is how I would rate them: - diver scallops: best thing we had although still pretty pricey even with the 50% off. comes with 3 scallops - crab stack: yummy and refreshing. may be a little salty towards the end if the dressing wasn't evenly distributed - kung pao calamari: sweet tangy sauce stir fried with bell pepper and onion with tender breaded calamari slices - ahi poke tostada: average. no fishy taste with probably wouldn't order again - hamachi tacos: barely any hamachi so mostly just feels like avocado in a crispy shell. probably wouldn't order again - onion rings: skip this. but the aioli it comes with is nice - miso eggplant: tastes like what it sounds like but i did really enjoy the cucumber salad it came with - unagi skewers: average unagi. the mushroom and rice had a slight lemony flavor to it that was pleasant Servers were nice. The patio is covered and heated. Parking wasn't too difficult; we found a 2hr free spot on Fay Ave (just around the corner from the restaurant) and there were still a few open spots that we could see. We went on a Friday at 3:30pm. Had a great lunch during happy hour today. It's really hard to go wrong with anything you get from the tapas menu. Today we added two new items from our usual list, the Kahlua Pork Spring Rolls with a delicious chutney sauce and the wildly conceived Salmon Karaage. Both are keepers. The main reason I did this update is to celebrate, because yes, they did it, they increased the number of toast points with the mandatory must-get crab stack from 4 to 6 as I mentioned they should in my original review. So very happy about that. In my reviews I will mention problems even for the best restaurants because it happens to even the best restaurants. Food good service good I would have given 5 stars however be aware they do something NO OTHER restaurant does they have the handheld machine like other places for tip & bill there's not a way to change custom tip so the 20-25% reflects on the original price not the happy hour price No other restaurants do this hence people go to happy hour because of the discounts and order more then they would at dinner time for appetizers. Their prices are way over priced to begin with especially the tiny drinks with so much ice they make enough on them the price at happy hour should be less then only 2.00 off my espresso martini was not good at all. Happy hour bill $50 you think the tip is $10 20% until you get your credit card statement which reflects $20 tip. I recommend paying cash! read more

I am so happy that Rappongi is back. The dishes are just as good as I remember when I came here with my family for happy hour tapas 20 years ago. Excellent vibe - the bartender(s), servers, and hosts are so friendly and accommodating. 10/10 would recommend. read more

So happy to hear that Rappongi is back! Was so excited to go back there and the Happy Hour menu looked amazing! They have a nice patio right on Prospect St. The inside is beautiful with subdued colors and a clean, not stark Asian feel. For HH you can order any of the Asian appetizers at 50% off. And, you get $2 off of very inflated alcohol prices. No thanks, I'll stick with water. Ordered Polynesian crab stack. This is what they used to be famous for. The presentation is beautiful, but the flavors...extremely disappointing! Actually not much flavor at all. Very bland and almost tasteless, even the crab, no flavor. Next, Mongolian duck quesadilla. Little shreds of duck (couldn't really taste it), can't taste the pepper jack cheese, guacamole was ok and the balsamic glaze tasted more like hoisin sauce. Didn't even eat 1/2 of it. Onion rings were ok but others at my table weren't impressed and only ate 1/2 of them. Ahi poke... was so looking forward to it. Disappointed, pretty dry ( was this premade from yesterday ?) and just had a little soy sauce flavor. Miso-glazed Japanese eggplant was 4 big logs of eggplant some undercooked, others ok, but certainly nothing spectacular. Barely ate any of it. Then the crispy Vietnamese shrimp. This was probably the best, but did not taste mint and the sauce served with it was lacking flavor. That's a very easy sauce to make.....no excuse. Our server seemed a bit clueless and disconnected from us. As we were getting different dishes, the empty dishes were removed. Nobody questioned why we had not eaten a lot of our food. If you see a lot of food left wouldn't someone normally ask if we wanted to take it to go and if the answer was no, wouldn't you expect them to ask if something was wrong with the food? None of that. In addition, we all had a lot of plates still on the table and nobody took them away even though we had paid our check and were clearly done and were sitting around chatting. To top it off there were several staff just standing around inside. Why didn't anyone pre bus our table? Needless to say, I was very disappointed. Your prices and location are those of an upscale restaurant. Please play more attention to the taste of the food (presentation was great) and the service. read more

This is white people asian food at exorbitant prices. Ts so buns. The drunken noodles were under cooked, the crying tiger steak wouldn't make a baby cry, and it was just kinda mid all around. The crab stack thing and their edamame was good tho! Service could also use a bit of work, but yk, if ur not used to authentic Asian food you'll be alright with it. read more

From the moment you walk in, the vibe is everything--chic, upscale, but still welcoming. It's the kind of place you can dress up for, or just show up and instantly feel like you're somewhere special. The outdoor seating is perfect, especially at night. The food? Next level. Every dish we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The sushi is incredibly high quality, and the fusion dishes actually deliver (not just hype). You can tell there's real intention behind the menu. And don't skip the cocktails--they're just as impressive as the food. Service was on point too--attentive without being overbearing, and genuinely knowledgeable about the menu.
