This place is a gem! Such a cool, laid back vibe. We went to hear the music (no cover charge, BTW). The musicians were some of the top local jazz artists in town! The place is filled with creative people that brought their sketch pads, needle pointing, journals, to work on while they chatted, ate great food, and enjoyed the music. I wont complain about a $9 drink compared to what I usually pay in other cities.... It was O K Ok let me start over, I had an event here I arrived late. I stayed due to the fact I was surrounded by books, I love books. I am currently writing a poetry book and needed the inspo.... Looks like the owner responded to my review, and what she is saying is not true. 1. She was not polite at all. She raised her voice and told me that she wanted me to feel bad. This isn't how you run a business, and this isn't how civilized human beings behave. My friends witnessed it; go ahead and read NG's and Rachel's reviews. Hopefully, she'll realize that lying does little to protect her reputation when her abhorrent behavior is on full display. 2. I did not know that they had this rule on their site (I never came across it). If I had known, I wouldn't have brought a sandwich with me. 3. I feel no guilt or shame because I didn't do anything wrong. She is lying about our conversation. I made an innocent mistake. We never talked about my so-called guilt/shame. I did tell her that I have diabetes. She said that I should have called them in advance. She conveniently left out all these details in her response. 4. The sandwich sat on my table for 20 minutes. She could have asked me to put it away sooner. Also, I literally left my sandwich out in the open. If I knew I was "breaking her rules," wouldn't I be more discreet about it? I specifically told her that people make mistakes, and I didn't like the way she spoke to me, and she said that she wanted me to feel bad. 5. She is saying that it is bold to bring a sandwich to an establishment that has six sandwiches on its menu. I told her SEVERAL times that I have diabetes, and it is not like she can change her menu for me. She doesn't list out the calories/macros on her menu (which is fine), but that doesn't work for me and my dietitian. As you can see, she has no empathy whatsoever for my condition. Extremely unprofessional behavior from the owner. This is a factual account of my experience. I used to come here for my meet-up events, but I won't be returning. I can no longer recommend it to others. What happened left me stunned. For context, I organize a monthly event. We always purchase something--teas, snacks, even books--to support this small business. I've personally bought their tea, charcuterie, and I even purchased a book last month that I was genuinely excited to read. I came in as usual and purchased their tea. I had a long day and brought a wrapped sandwich from a different vendor that I didn't get to eat. I set it on the table while reading with the group. About 20 minutes later, I unwrapped it and took a single bite. That's when the owner came over immediately and snapped. She rudely said, "Don't eat that in here--for health and safety issues. It's also rude." Her tone was unnecessarily hostile. I told her it was fine if outside food wasn't allowed, but there was no need to speak to me like that or call me rude. Then she said something that truly shocked me: "I was being rude because I wanted you to feel bad." Yes, the business owner admitted she was deliberately being rude (with the intent of making me feel bad). When I tried to express that I didn't appreciate being spoken to that way and that I've never experienced this before, she cut me off and loudly said, "Other establishments probably don't say anything to you or others because this is Portland!" That was a weird comment, and I felt like she was putting Portlanders down. That's insane because her customers are Portlanders. She is taking advantage of our kindness. She continued raising her voice, saying she didn't appreciate how I had food from a different establishment, and she did not take any responsibility for the way she handled the situation. I was trying to tell her that other establishments will nicely tell their customers to put away their food or drinks from other establishments, but she was not interested in hearing me out. Let me be clear: It's completely valid for a business to have a "no-outside-food" policy. It is NOT valid to speak to paying customers or any person, for that matter, with condescension and contempt. She could have kindly asked me to put my sandwich away, and I would have done so without hesitation. Instead, she escalated a non-issue into a hostile confrontation--all over a sandwich--and took pride in trying to make a customer feel bad. That's not just unprofessional and uncivilized. That's repugnant behavior for someone who owns a customer-facing business. People often let this kind of behavior slide, but I won't. I believe in supporting small businesses, but I can't support a business when its owner disrespects the people who help keep its doors open and its lights on. I'm done supporting a place where the owner feels justified in bullying patrons to feel superior. She clearly does not respect her customers. The way business owners treat you when they enforce their policies tells you everything you need to know about them. There are plenty of other local spots that treat people with decency and dignity. There is some people watching, but not so much foot traffic or noise that you couldn't crank out some remote work or deep thinking on a problem or on what you just read. Wow, what a portland place, and for the first time I mean that in a good way. It's like browsing thru your grandmas dusty attic looking thru old weird books but you can also order a beer or sandwich and tomato soup while doing so. They've got some tables spread throughout the place with some cool nooks and booths, and a little back patio. They have some events all the time here too like book clubs & live music. Very cool concept, I wish I could bring this to my home city! The name of the place says it all - this book pub provides a space for people to drink, eat, read books, and support local artists all in one place. When there is no live music the pub is very quiet and intimate like a library, and would make a great place to study or work. The staff is very nice and once you order you seat yourself. I ordered some delicious fried Brussels sprouts and beer on draft. There is a community selection of games you can play. We picked up Mindtrap and had a great time hanging out here. read more

The service here is terrible. As a book lover I was really hoping this would be a good fit and nice location, but it's not. This location has the worst customer service. They take over 30 minutes to deliver a simple side salad (it's been 30 minutes and still no salad). Customers' personal belongings (like expensive wedding rings) get stolen in the bathroom. They don't greet their customers upon arrival (I understand this isn't an expectation but no one saw me for five minutes) and when they did they were distracted the entire time. This place offers local artwork and other books off their shelves but it's terrible at its food customer service. I've been waiting to use the restroom until after my salad has arrived but it hasn't so I'm getting a refund and leaving. read more

If I wanted to impress a date, this is where I'd take them. If I want to get lost in my own or someone else's thoughts, this is where I will come from now on. Very cool looking place inside, I loved the private nooks in the corner and the books everywhere! Games as well. I didn't stay because there wasn't any space anywhere, also it wasn't very welcoming either. Not sure it's a spot for people of color but who knows. I wasn't greeted when I was at the counter and the people inside looked at me like they were confused that a black person was walking in. 3 stars because it's just a cool looking hang out, and I hope my experience isn't everyone else's experience... nice study spot. Also oregon is different like that... you may not feel welcomed and that's just how certain areas are it's Portland. I wouldn't go back ever but glad I got to check it out. I've made a point of exploring the city more, of late, in an effort to find new-to-me businesses I can share with friends and family. I stumbled upon Rose City Book Pub on a Friday night during one of their open mic events. What a great crowd, with so many talented writers! It's so wonderful to find vibrant communities like this are gathering together once more, especially since covid made it impossible for so long. Delightful in a shabby chic type of way with lots of books and places to sit. I ate a bowl of tomato and basil soup with a grilled cheese sandwich and an appetizer of (4) stuffed mushrooms with delicious cheese and meat. The service was pleasantly delivered by someone by the name of Rachael. I hung out for four hours with a friend of mine, we knitted and chatted and never felt rushed to leave. Perfect place for getting out of your place to work, study or read a book! It can get pretty packed during afternoon, where finding enough room for parties of 3+ can be tricky. So if you are coming with a group, get there earlier to scout out a good spot. I love the COZY vibes and their curated collections of books to check out. As a pub, I appreciate that they have a full menu! Not just deserts or appetizers. I wish they had more vegan-friendly options, but thankful they even have some. Their pasta puttanesca is good :) Their service has always been friendly! They are open till midnight :O Very rare for anywhere in Portland, let alone, a more chill out place. I haven't done it yet, but I could see myself, cozying with a book on a late night weekday or weekend. Also, their events! I've been interested in this place for a long time. I finally had an opportunity to stop by last week and was very disappointed with the staff. I don't know how hard it is to work at a book pub but I don't think it would have been hard to simply be friendly. The staff was very curt with me and my companion. I was so excited upon walking in due to the large amounts if books everywhere. I couldn't wait to order something to drink and explore. My friends and I always thought it would be cool to find a late night spot for just reading and drinking. Unfortunately the attitude of the person behind the counter was so off putting. So off that even with a mask on I could tell they'd rather not help me. Was it a bad day? I don't know. What I do know is I've worked in the service industry forever and somehow always found a way to at least be polite to potential customers. We ended up walking back outside to look for another pub. The good thing about this city is the amount of places similar to this establishment that I can spend my hard earned money at. read more

It's hard to understand why a business would advertise their hours as open til midnight and then repeatedly close more than an hour (sometimes two hours) before that. Why not say, "hey, we're until 11" and then if you're busy, you have the option to remain open later? Within the last two weeks, I have tried to patronize this business before 9:30 pm on three occasions - door were unlocked, all lights were on as if it's open - to be told "we're closed." It seems to be at dependent on which staff member is working that night. I recommend dimming your lights and locking your door when you close early. Also just pull back on your posted hours, then play it by ear as to whether to stay open later. Very cool place, but lots to learn. read more

Books and beer are two of my favorite things so you know I had to check this spot out! The interior is cozy -- walls of used books, toys for kids, mismatched furniture and tables, and soft lighting. The atmosphere and noise level is that of a cafe with soft music playing, and patrons studying or reading. The food selection is minimal but has all the classics like grilled cheese, chips and dip, and fries. The beer/cider list is pretty awesome and all at a reasonable price. I have never had a spot that I could say is my fave in Portland, until now. Rose City Book Pub is officially my hang out spot. It's not noisy and not a dive bar. You got time to kill? You could peruse the (what feels like) million books. They sell knickknacks and some cool objects. You can eat, work, drink and hang with your people. They got cool virtual things to watch. Service impeccable, the owner Elise is super nice and knowledgeable. She is always helping the community in some way or another. They actually ran out of turkey, but they were able to swap it with pulled pork. It was actually pretty good. The fries were nice and crispy and the melt was good, considering they just improvised. I've hosted a silent reading club at this pub a few times over the past few months. All of them have been fine until this past Sunday. At the same time as the silent reading club, another group had rented out the rest of the front room for a party. It was as a party should be: had a lot of people coming and going, being generally social, and loud. It seemed like a great time - just not something I would want to host a silent reading club next to. This should have been brought up to us at the time of the reservation or when we arrived on the day. We could have been moved to another part of the pub or even seated outside. Instead, we had a lovely but loud party interrupting our reservation. On top of that, the table we were placed at was reserved immediately after us. We were not told this. No sign was placed on the table. We literally had people pushing us out of the table. Neither the servers nor the owner said anything. In fact, we were ignored for the majority of the time we were present due to the aforementioned party. The only time someone came up to our table outside of delivering food was to belittle one of our group for bringing in outside food. Rules are rules and I will respect whatever rules at an establishment are in place. However the owner took it upon herself to publicly and proudly shame someone. That is, until their behavior has gotten called out on this platform and now they're trying to present themselves as polite and professional. I would really like to keep patronizing this pub, but the owner and our treatment has left a very sour taste in our mouth. read more

I would honestly give the pub zero stars if I could. I've been to this place for trivia and coworking hangs off and on for the last few years. I went to an event there yesterday, and after witnessing the owner's behavior towards my friend and her follow-up responses, I will not visit this place again. You could give me the amount of debt this country has in cash, and I would still never visit. Let's break it down. The food - It's fine. It's very hit or miss. I usually get the brussel sprouts or the 'poutine'. They have been either mediocre or horrendously bad. Like the brussel sprouts were so salty and burnt. Or the 'gravy' on the 'poutine' was lumpy, and the cheese has always been a joke. I've gotten the charcuterie board with my friends once, and it was so overpriced. The coffee sucks. The coffee at the coffee shop next door is leagues better. The beer and tea are decent but mediocre for Portland. The atmosphere - The vibes are very cute. I liked coming in here to do work. The place is kind of grimy; although it's a lot better now. The tables and chairs are like one step away from being broken, and the table tops are always sticky? The service - Brother, where do I start. The number of times I have seen the owner be belligerently drunk at trivia and yell at customers is crazy. As a POC, the number of microaggresions I've experienced coming from the owner over the years is crazy. I was at an event yesterday, and my friends reserved a table. Apparently, there is a $13/ person minimum if you reserve here that my friends did not know about and were not told either times they've hosted an event here. My friend had dietary restrictions, and she brought a sandwich with her because the sandwiches at the pub don't meet her dietary needs. That sandwich sat on the table for about 15 minutes. In full view of the owner. The owner had so many opportunities to politely tell my friend that outside food isn't allowed in. Which, side note, I've seen many people bring in outside food before. I've brought my own coffee here before because the coffee here sucks. None of those people or I were berated for bringing food in. Anyway, as soon as my friend unwraps her sandwich, the owner runs over and berates my friend in front of everyone. My friend then pulls the owner aside and explains that she didn't appreciate being spoken to like that, and she explained the situation. The owner doubled down on her rudeness and told my friend that she intended to embarrass my friend and make her feel bad. I understand not wanting outside food in a place that already sells (mediocre) sandwiches, but nothing excuses talking to anyone, let alone a paying customer like that. The owner is now lying on Yelp about this situation and has yet to apologize. Portland has many other whimsical book pubs. There's no reason to support this abusive, racist woman. Also, if the other reviews are true, the owner is also transphobic and a Trump supporter. read more

What an interesting concept and for that alone grading it against itself I have to go to five star. Now as far as a bar goes maybe a four-star as far as a bookstore goes maybe a three star as far as a restaurant goes maybe a two star but as far as a bookstore that serves alcohol and food girls it's amazing... Came here for a friends book release and it is a very small intimate space nothing really matches piles of books everywhere with what's on my call system of organization no I could not put my finger on what it might've been. We came in grabbed a drink to support the venue for allowing us to take space in for this release. Didn't have a chance to grab any food but it seem to be quite simple and many items made of stock fairly quick as the menu have a lot of items crossed out. Now it looks decent as far as food goes and I saw people enjoying themselves and beer prices really weren't that bad they had very cute little nooks and spots to read and enjoy yourselves and really there's nothing else quite like it. They also seem to have lots of events for three and paid for so definitely check out the calendar and get on their mailing list up next to the free wreath making workshop which we might have to attend. read more

What an adorable place! I walked into to this place with my guys and was greeted by a really nice guy who offered a couple of sample of things on tap...after he checked our IDs and vaccine records (that's awesome!). We came in at about 10:30pm and there were a couple really chill people don't their own things. The place is covered in books and plenty of board games. What a charming and unique place!! We ordered some grilled cheese sandwiches and some Fries. They were surprisingly delicious! We played a few games, quietly checked out a few books, and just spent the night chilling. What a vibe! I love this place so much and I wish I had something like this where I am from because if I lived here I would be here allllll the time. Anyway, such a cool spot. Defines you check it out! This place is pretty awesome! Do you ever have a book and want to read? Do you ever want to read with beer and or wine, maybe a cocktail? Not a bar, not some scene place, but some place where you can actually read. I've long wanted one and this is it. It's a mash up if you're favorite small bookstore had food and drinks, this is what would happen. We came here for bookclub and it was so fun. We had a great discussion, their selection of beers on tap is extensive and they have several food options. I enjoyed their hummus plate and their fancy cheese. Their food is a little basic but their service is definitely very nice and their drink options are wonderful. Lots of comfy nooks to read and their music isn't that loud so you can have a conversation. Their prices are very reasonable. The comfortable atmosphere and drinks of choice is definitely a plus. This is a unique little spot in the NE. They are still new, and it showed during my visit. One of the employees had called in sick that day and the poor guy working was there all alone, so I didn't factor in the service into my rating. First thing to note, the front door is not really obvious...I first attempted to enter on the corner of the street but that is a different cafe. They might need to put a little sign on the front door or something to make it a little more clear that is the entrance. The good: I love the shelves of random used books. Its kind of like a treasure hunt. You dont come in here looking for something in particular, but you might find something you didnt know you were looking for. Novels, cookbooks, coffee table books, true crime, biographies, kids books...they are all here scattered about. I also love the table settings and the cozy nooks to eat or read at. They have a good number of taps and a nice variety of beers, cider, and kombucha on tap. The menu is limited but inventive. I didnt try food on this trip but the menu looked good and I am looking forward to trying something on my next visit. Some areas for improvement: While the half of the pub with books and tables and booths is cozy and inviting, the bar area is very stale and lacks the charm of the other half. Its almost like there is a bit of a double personality going on. The half wall open to the back kitchen doesnt help. The tap lines seem to have some air issues since every beer I saw poured had a LOT of head. It wasnt just one line either, every beer looked to be the same. Hopefully they figure that one out. When I was here there was no music which made the place feel eerily quiet. I can understand wanting to have an environment for reading, but even having some ambient noise or instrumental music I think would help. Something to drown out the hum of whatever was making noise in the back. Bottom line: Will I be back? Yes. Would I sit at the bar again? Not in its current condition when the rest of the pub is 100 times better. Would I recommend this place to others? Yes, but with the disclaimer that they still seem to be working a few things out. Also of note: They have a lot of weekly events from readings, to trivia, to paint nights, to poetry clubs. I highly recommend checking our their event calendar online. read more
