After a great first outing we were pretty disappointed to hear the serving throwing out politics when we are having a dinner out with friends. At one point describing the fry sauce she said "it was just like chick fill A but without the hate". Just saying that is hateful. Just serve us with a smile and keep your politics for your friends. Easily the most smashed smashburger I've ever had! The patties were paper thin and crispy around the edges. I'm impressed. You can really taste the high quality ingredients that they used from the buns to the greens to the patties. Don't get me wrong, it's a filling meal but you don't feel greasy afterwards. We tried the Double Double and the Fair Burger (as a double!). Both were delicious, not too different from one another. I'd go for a single patty next time cause that is more than plenty. Tulip Shop Tavern is one of my absolute favorites and my definitive go-to when I don't want to risk trying a new place. It is a busy, clean, and vibrant hipster bar. Having visited several times, I can confidently say every single meal has been delicious and remarkably consistent. During this visit, we ordered the fish sandwich alongside a Dole Whip slushy. The Dole Whip was so incredibly delicious that I completely finished it before my sandwich even arrived. As for the fish sandwich, it easily ranks as one of the best in town. The fillet is fried to a shattered-crisp golden crunch and nestled in a soft, butter-toasted bun with cool, tangy tartar sauce and a refreshingly crisp slaw. I have been dying to try this place and I was mainly coming for the food. I went with my son as he recently turned 21. We rarely stray from our SE neighborhood with amazing bars and restaurants. It was relatively busy especially on the outside patio. Think they only had 2 waitresses working with an additional food runner. I was completely shocked when we got the bill. It was super expensive for bar food in my humble opinion. Our total for a fish salad, a salad with a side of chicken and onion rings plus a beer and cocktail was over $67 plus tip. I guess I have been out of town for a couple weeks, but we do go out quite a bit and I thought it would be a little more reasonable. We stopped here for my husband's birthday lunch on a Friday. Despite it being pretty busy, we had great service. Food came out at a reasonable time. I really enjoyed the shoestring fries and queso dip. All queso should be served in this big of a bowl! My husband enjoyed his smash burger with grilled jalapeno and I liked my veggie burger with grilled onions, but we agreed we've had better elsewhere. My friends have been telling me for the past year to check out Tulip Shop so I told a friend I meet him there for food and drinks. I arrived and the place was pretty busy, probably as expected for a late weekend crowd. We sat in the bar and I ordered a smash burger and a tall whiskey ginger ale. The ambience is darkly lit and reminds me of a similar layout of Sweet Hereafter (RIP). The staff was friendly and checked periodically if we needed anything. My burger arrived and I ate in silence as my friend rambled about what was on his mind at the time. The drink prices are a little higher than other bars but they also have some signature cocktails to try as well. A few months later, a couple of my friends invited me out to the late night happy hour and that is what definitely won me over. They have smash burgers discounted a couple hours before closing and they offer various food specials. The corn dog sounded delicious and was recommended. I also ordered fries and a side of queso for only $2 extra. It was the best decision of the evening as the queso was very generous and it paired well with not only the fries, but also the corn dog as well. If you want like gigantic onion rings, they deliver and honestly I can't wait to back for that alone. read more

Was craving a late night burger and a beer... stumbled into the most perfect place for the two! Tulip Shop Tavern has a cute but low-key ambiance that I really enjoyed. I had heard good things about the burger so was very excited to try it and was not let down! Our service was incredibly friendly, I didn't get her name but she was the sweetest who gave quick yet relaxed service- perfect for the setting. I got the tavern burger, my boyfriend got the fair burger, and we shared the (MASSIVE) onion rings. We both loved the burgers so much. Sometimes when getting a smash burger I am left wanting more, but the size was just right to actually fill us up. The edges were real crispy and the patty was juicy and flavorful. My beef consumption has declined over the years, but Tulip Shop is the kind of place that makes it worthwhile to go against the grain and travel here from any part of the city for a burger. Our server warned us that the kitchen may take a while to prepare our food, but since the drinks arrived quickly and we had a comfortable place to sit, this wasn't a hardship. The decor goes perfectly with the menu - kind of dark and dive-barish, but lacking a layer of grime/grease on either the food or the furnishings, and feeling very comfortable in ganeral. I can't claim to be an expert on smash burgers, but the one I found at Tulip Shop had all the qualities that I was hoping for. I have never felt the need to write a Yelp review in my entire life, but I am currently sitting here somewhere between boiling rage and pure sadness because my absolute favorite restaurant in Portland just completely broke my heart, insulted my intelligence, and threw me out. We came in on a dead Tuesday night to a completely empty restaurant, yet it took over 30 agonizing minutes just to get three basic burgers. When we noticed our server completely forgot part of our drink order, they didn't apologize--they snapped that this "wasn't a fast-food joint" and aggressively told us to go cry to the manager. To top off this total nightmare, when I finally demanded the check just so we could escape, we were told to never come back. I am completely baffled, deeply insulted, and honestly just depressed that a place I used to love has rotted into such a hostile, toxic mess. read more

I need to figure out a time to go there when it's not so dang busy. I always end up waiting a good 45 minutes or more for my burger. By then I have had a couple of beers which are pretty filling. Burgers are pretty good. I do also enjoy the chicken sandwich. I do like their fries a lot as well. They're usually cooked pretty good. They have a bunch of different dipping sauces which I mean, who doesn't love to dip! They have a patio Outback, which is nice if you can score one of those tables. Came here with a group of 8 and we were able to get a place to sit without an issue. The vibe is dark and cozy and it's not too loud. The food was delicious, everyone got different items and all were happy. Drinks were yummy and all the prices seemed reasonable. Our server was amazing and nice. I've had Tulip Tavern on my list for a while ever since a friend said how good their burgers were so I had to stop by the next time I was a craving a burger and fries. We came during a weekend and it's pretty packed but the patio area outside was unassuming since you can't really see it when you walk up to the place. I'd recommend heading straight to the back as tables are first come, first serve and they have staff coming around to take your orders. The tables have QR codes so you can check the menu but do yourself a favor and get their Tavern Burger and onion rings. Solid smash burger with crispy edges and melty cheese. The bun holds up well and has a tangy sauce. The onion rings are massive but stay together similar to Ringside onion rings. Also tried the fried chicken sandwich and it had a nice crunch. You can't really go wrong with any of the options but they're pretty filling so you can definitely share. read more

After seeing this place on a reel or something, I decided to drive here and check it out. Had to drive around a little bit to find a place to park that wasn't too far Kind of a dive bar vibe when you walk in. Very friendly bartender. Told me to sit wherever I wanted. They had table service. I walked through and sitting in the back in the outside area with picnic tables. Servercame pretty quickly.. I ordered a lager on tap. She brought it within minutes and it was freezing cold and tasty. I ordered a double burger. No size. I was alone. I was pretty sure I wouldn't be able to eat everything. I saw the french fries at the table next to me and they looked delicious. I probably waited 15 minutes for my burger. When it came, I was amazed. It was so huge. Perfect looking Smashburger. The sauce was really good and I enjoyed the shredded iceberg. The cheese is super melting in between the patties. It was a delicious first bite.. This burger is pretty messy and a little greasy. Not in a bad way though. I thoroughly enjoyed it and ate almost the whole thing. It was too big for me to finish. Believe me I tried. Most times in super divey bar, you're going to get one of two things with food. It's either going to be very basic and not great. Or it's going to be a gem. Not as many gems but this place was it. It's Portland, so it's hard to expect to know where you would get one of the best burgers in the city. I can tell you one of them is in this bar though. I was too excited and didn't even get a picture of the burger. But let's be honest it had real meaty flavor that stood out amongst all the flavors. If you want that real fresh basic burger taste then this is that. Also, had the bologna sandwich. It was nostalgic, but stick to the burger. The patio provided sufficient shelter but it was a bit too buggy with fruit flies which were quite persistent. The burger was super crunchy, like it was coated in panko. A server told me they fry it (presuming it's deep fried(?) based on the texture. The food was flavorful, but it was intensely greasy. This was one of those splurge meals when you crave that type of food. I would recommend the place for the service and menu selection, but not sure if it's my style of dining. read more

Just an overall great experience. I got there shortly after 5, thinking I'd beat an evening rush, but it was packed. Dim lighting, lots of seating, a clear favorite for friends meeting up. The bartenders welcomed me when I came in and promptly served me when I took a seat at the bar. Everyone working there was nice and seems like they actually enjoy their jobs and the people they work with. I loved just watching how they communicated. It was inviting. I started with the Improved Old Fashioned. Solid. I came here specifically for the wings, as I heard they were some of the better ones in town, so I put in an order promptly. They came out steaming. These are big wings. And they are absolutely delicious. Crispy in the best way from their double fried technique. The buffalo sauce was perfect. I had to order a Rainier about halfway through to help me wash it down. Completely devoured both and seriously considered for staying for one more drink because the vibes were immaculate, but I wanted to give up my seat so that someone else could enjoy the same experience I just had. the space is really cute, i love the lighting and vibes. came in for a quite bite for lunch. veggie burger sort of fell apart while i ate it but it was very saucy and the bun had a hint of sweetness. wish they had more variety in vegan options though. also got onion rings, which were huge and very crunchy. the curry ketchup is sooooo good and i appreciate that there is a wide variety of sauce options. will come back to try their cocktails, as they had some good looking signatures. read more

This place will literally damage your ears. I really want to frequent this place, and the food here is really good. But I just cannot come back to this establishment and I'll explain why. They bump up the music so loud, I'm guessing in an effort to drown out conversations from other tables. The problem is, people start speaking louder so they can hear each other, and as a result, the music gets turned up even louder. If you go in when it's dead, maybe you can hear the person across from you, but if you go in when they're half busy, you won't even be able to have a conversation. A few things that really don't help this, the fact that the place is all cement or concrete, makes the sound bounce even more. Maybe some rugs, or tapestries on the walls would help dampen the acoustics. Normally I couldn't care less about what kind of music is played, but the fact that this loud music is screamo punk grunge music, makes it deafening. Not only am I struggling to hear the person next to me, I have to compete with some high-pitched distorted frequencies that dominate the audio spectrum. I have tinnitus as well, so on top of not being able to hear anyone I'm with, it exacerbates my tinnitus and I leave with a ring in my ears. I get that my tinnitus is a personal problem, but it would be nice if there was at least an option to not be defend for a burger. I'm not some old curmudgeon, that just thinks things are too loud. I know I have heard others expressed the same concerns, and avoid this restaurant for the same reasons. Again, the food is really good, and perhaps if you can go in during a slow time it might be worth it. But unfortunately, this place is dead to me now unless they can turn down the volume, and work on the acoustics just a bit. It just sucks because last time I was in, the people I was with we couldn't even have a conversation. We all sat there shouting at each other, constantly going "what!?". On top of the ringing in the ears afterwards. If you're looking to enjoy some food with friends, and have a conversation, you probably want to check other options. read more

The reviews for the smash burger looked amazing and so we decided that it was worth the drive to try them out . The restaurant has a very local dive bar feel and was very full for a random Monday late night .There is a back patio but it was just an extremely cold and rainy evening to try that out. Drinks - They have a selection of cocktails and NA beverages . The Beer and wine selection is limited though . We got a Penicillin and a lager . Both me and my husband agreed that the Penicillin was top notch . Food -We got the Patty Melt and an order of fries as well as a salad with Fried Chicken Thigh . I found it a tad bit weird that they replaced the bun with a piece of bread ... but the lure of two patties was just too good to let go ! Nevertheless , it tasted fantastic and hit all the right spots . The salad was a nice compliment to the greasy burger . Our server was nice, but she was extremely busy and so it was a challenge to get her attention for ordering or even for the cheque .
