Close to our hotel, we were thrilled to have this little coffee shop literally a skip and a jump away. It's cute, small with limited outdoor seating. A bonus: a view of the Cardiff surfer and ocean right down the street. On a Monday morning, the cafe had a steady stream of customers but was not overflowing or overstimulating as other guests have noted. We are decaf mocha snobs and enjoy trying new independent coffee shops on our travels. In addition to the setting, we would rank the beauty of our mochas right up there with the best of the best. Hats off to the talent of the baristas. Now for the real test: taste. On this important feature, we would only give our mochas 3-stars. The flavor was bland and watered down. Not really chocolaty nor espresso-ish. My husband, an ex-barista, felt the shots were pulled too quickly and thus did not have a robust flavor. The chocolate was not super sweet, which we appreciated. It was, however, lacking in that dark chocolate taste that's so important in high quality mochas. The staff were efficient but not at all engaging. They chatted with each other but not customers. This seemingly small factor makes a big difference in the experience for guests. We didn't try a pastry though the limited selection looked yummy. This shop also sells Zumbar roasted beans, a nice perk. Rose Hill Purveyors is worth a visit for the experience alone. Maybe other coffee drinks will be more to your liking. read more

Generally speaking, they make good espresso/espresso drinks here. Rose Hill clearly sources good quality beans, although I don't believe they do their own roasting. I am assuming they get their coffee from James or one of the other SD reputable roasters. Whatever the source, one of the things I appreciate about their drinks is that they are not overly fruity, something that seems increasingly popular. Kudos for keeping to keeping their product a bit more "old school." The spot is fairly busy, and this is where RH needs some work. They certainly cannot help the dimensions and layout of the cafe itself, but it is not well-suited for large lines--a real issue on weekends. Moreover, the turnaround time for coffees--even when it is not too crowded--is a bit too long. The managers/baristas should put greater thought in how they can facilitate production. It's gotten to a point that I simply won't go in on Fridays and weekends. If Rose Hill can iron out these service problems, I think they really have a five star operation here. read more

Used to be Zumbar coffee and then I believe one of the baristas took it over and changed the name. Zumbar is one of my fav coffee shops in San Diego and Rosehill has kept the same consistency and flavor. This is one of my stops along the bike route my buddies and I take when cycling up the coast. We always stop here for a coffee and scone. The lattes are consistently amazing. Perfect extraction and milk temperature, sweet and smooth. They have some counter top style seating outside where one can enjoy the fresh air and a view of the ocean. Lovely spot. read more

I have been coming here since it was "Zumbar" it is my favorite coffee shop in SD! Even though I live in SD I only get to come here when camping across the street, so it is extra special to me. I always get an iced mocha with oat milk and it tastes great every time! Truthfully I don't really like mochas as they can be too sweet. But the baristas do an excellent job making the perfect one each time. Oat milk is a must! I also always add cinnamon on top which is also a must. I have tried one or two pastries over the years and they have been great. But nothing could have prepared me for the everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. Literally the best bagel I have ever had. Also the barista at checkout is always so sweet I am happy when I see her! read more

You know the routine when traveling you always have to find your niche where you're gonna compare. Some people it might be pizza others might be wine formany beer. For the select boring folk it is coffee on our hunt, gazing over yelp reviews, and ambience photos posted by fellow members. We came to this spot. For me, the best compliment for coffee can be that it was worth the money because really and truly we know like I seen all my reviews. All copies cost the same amount nowadays. You're gonna spend four or 5 bucks on a drink everywhere. Doesn't matter if it's a drive-through or Starbucks or a delicious local brand like you see here. Spend the extra time find a place that's gonna make it worth it. Don't just go through the large chain that you have become accustomed to see what's out there. This place had a great roast, great machine, machinery, and knowledgeable people putting that to work. Really and truly, you can't get a good couple without having all three of those. I would definitely recommend this place for the drinks as I cannot comment on the food because that's a whole other topic for a whole other journey. Things came together, beautiful here. read more

Hell yes. Not pictured: the owner's homemade sourdough everything bagel, thick with scallion cream cheese. Get them while they're still flying under the radar. Quietly better than Pop Up Bagels imo. And no, I'm not some schmuck who waited hours at the new La Jolla location, I'm talking NYC baby (Shaun White voice). Anyways, they've got Hot Chip on the speakers, which tells you someone here truly gives a damn. Was a customer for years when we lived in north county. When it was Zumbar. The menu is brief but dialed in. They don't offer a selection of flavors and exhaustive menu of drinks. But they have the foundation every other menu is rooted in. I love it. They know who they are. They know what they want to offer. They don't want to be everything to everyone. Ownership has changed. But the consistency is there. My understanding is the new owner is the same person that's been here for years when it was Zumbar. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love seeing folks living their dream. If you want a coffee with some seaside view, you have some view from outside. There are several seats and it's very comfortable place to get a coffee and get something to eat and just enjoy your time. Maybe because it's a small space I didn't see people with their laptops working which is something that I really appreciate. I don't love coffee shops that look like coworking spaces. As you know, if you follow my reviews, I am not fan of rhat. As I like to create my little bit of joy I always bring my tablecloth with me and some flowers to decorate the coffee drinks or the food. I appreciate that I was able to eat my own salad while having the coffee. My cappuccino was perfect and the presentation in a real ceramic cup was a nice touch for me. The only thing I missed was a more heartfelt welcome because as a new customer we like to be cherished a bit. Also, very cool artwork in the walls. I don't know if they rotate it, but it's really neat to see art decorating the walls. read more

We were walking around Encinitas on a Saturday morning and came across this gem. We walked inside and were instantly greeted. The cashier was so sweet and patient while we looked at the menu and ordered. I ordered an iced matcha latte and my boyfriend got a flat white. Both drinks were good and came out fast. Limited seating outside but it wasn't really busy. We found a nice high table outside and sipped our drinks while we people watched. Perfect for coffee dates and studying! This place is super chill. We stayed at a nearby hotel that had some terrible reviews about their complimentary coffee. So, I walked over to Rose Hill Purveyors and got the most delicious latte I have had in a long time. It was devine, full of flavor and no sugar required. Came here thinking it was still Zumbar Coffee but it appears to have been rebranded. The location is fantastic, easy walk to the beach with a good view. Decent amount of seating for such a small shop. They were pretty busy around 9:30AM on a Sunday, but it only took maybe 10 minutes total. I like that they had a relatively focused menu and decent prices. The presentation was good and the drinks were decent. I didn't try the baked goods, though it looked like they didn't have many options left. If you're already at the beach it's a no brainer to visit. Parking can be tough, there are curb spots between the firelanes up front - I got lucky but it seemed like you might have to park a ways away during busy times. read more

If you have a legit palate for quality java this is the spot. They have outdoor seating with a partial ocean view which made for a wonderful way to start the Sunday out and about. ICED LATTE: -- upon receiving it I was initially concerned by the light color that appeared too milky...once I gave it a good stir "it was all good in the neighborhood" -- the color still looked lighter than my normal lattes ordered, but the coffee stood up loud and proud -- smooth tasty QUALITY coffee -- super, super smooth -- NO bitterness -- NO sourness The wife got the HOT LATTE and seconded my joy over the cup. They were closing soon so we snuck back in and bought two sacks of beans for the road. "El Mundo" and "Hummingbird" had the notes that spoke to us the most, but the decaf sounded good too. read more

The menu is very limited with both food and drinks, the staff weren't friendly and were sooo slow (literally weighing the espresso when there was a massive line), and they're cashless. Favorite coffee shop in San Diego. I've been 6 or 7 times. I'm a barista, so I always order a cortado on my first time, then a flat white, for several reasons. The cortado lets you sample the espresso without cutting it with too much milk. It was delicious; the espresso they've been using recently is a classic toasty medium roast with notes of hazelnut-chocolate and a long, pleasant aftertaste. The flat white is to see if they 1) get the right texture on the milk, 2) don't break the crema, so the first sip is strong, and 3) use ristretto shots instead of espresso. They have passed this with flying colors every time. Absolute perfection, no exceptions. They broke the crema once for a milkier coffee today but who cares lol these guys rock read more

I never leave reviews but I have to say something about this coffee shop. The menu is short and sweet but that's because the beans and equipment they use are top of the line.
