I met a colleague here for a meeting on a Tuesday afternoon. It was a beautiful day so we grabbed a table outside. They have lots of pastries, desserts and lunch offerings. We ordered two iced matchas with oat milk and a croissant. Service was quick and friendly. The same girl who took our order made our drinks. After a few minutes sitting outside, the wind picked up so we closed the umbrella so it wouldn't fall over on us. We wrapped up our meeting shortly after. Was in the are and decided to try manikin for the first time for breakfast. It was a Sunday morning so pretty busy but the line wasn't too bad. I opted for soy chorizo breakfast tacos and a cappuccino. The breakfast tacos were essentially flavorless. The soy chorizo had almost not flavor, not even salt it seemed. I finished them all because I was very hungry, but otherwise, I would not get this again and felt that the price does not reflect the quality of food. The espresso in the cap tasted over extracted, so I didn't really enjoy it. Overall, k didn't like the coffee or the food I had. I would not come again unless they improved. I did like that the wait wasn't TOO bad and they have lots of seating. read more

I visited their location  in Encinitas today to meet a friend and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. I ordered the Greek scramble, which comes with a bagel. When my food arrived, the bagel had visible mold on it. It was very concerning that this wasn't caught before being served. I brought it to the attention of the staff member who delivered the food. Instead of taking the plate back and replacing the meal, he simply removed the bagel from my plate and brought another one. Given the situation, I would have expected the entire dish to be remade. Additionally, the coffee mug I was given appeared dirty, which added to my concerns about overall cleanliness. I later felt sick and experienced symptoms consistent with food poisoning, possibly related to the meal. For the quality of food and service provided, the pricing felt unreasonably high. The overall experience did not reflect the cost. I'm really disappointed with the lack of quality control and how the situation was handled. I hope management takes food safety, cleanliness, and customer service more seriously moving forward. read more

I took my mom to Pannikin Coffee & Tea in Encinitas for Sunday brunch, and we had such a nice time! My mom immediately thought the place was adorable, and I have to agree. The fact that it's located in an old railroad station gives it so much character, and I love the relaxed, eclectic atmosphere. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, plus a cute little gift shop. Sunday was definitely busy and there was a long line when we arrived, but it moved surprisingly quickly. I ordered a café au lait and the lox bagel on an everything bagel. The lox came with fluffy, creamy cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, lots of capers, pepperoncini, and lemon. You do have to assemble it yourself, which got a little messy, but once I put everything together it was delicious and very filling. For around $15, I thought it was a good value. My mom originally wanted avocado toast, but they had run out of avocado, so she went with the ham bagel instead on a sun-dried tomato bagel. It was a good-sized sandwich with cream cheese and lots of sprouts, and she really enjoyed it. The menu is much bigger than I expected. They have loose-leaf teas, specialty coffee drinks, and an amazing-looking pastry selection with pies, bars, huge muffins, and gluten-free options. Some of their specialty drinks are pretty serious--the Jimi Hendrix has four shots of espresso! I'm not sure I'm brave enough for that one. It was a hot San Diego weekend, so sitting outside with a little cloud cover felt really nice. There were also lots of cyclists stopping in, which adds to the fun, casual neighborhood vibe. My one complaint is the flies around some of the outdoor seating. There are uncovered outdoor garbage bins, which seemed to attract quite a few flies. We probably could have chosen a different table, but covered bins would definitely help. And if you're not a fan of those big green beetles, just know they apparently like hanging out there too! There are two restrooms, and although there was a line on this busy Sunday, they were fairly clean. I've also visited during the week when it was much quieter, so if crowds aren't your thing, a weekday might be the better time to go. Overall, Pannikin has a great vibe, good coffee, filling food, tons of tempting pastries, cute gifts, and a really unique setting. I was happy to bring my mom here, and it turned out to be a really cute spot for a mother-daughter brunch. We'll definitely be back! read more

Pros: Great coffee, we had a flat white and latte and both are very good. The atmosphere is cute, and has a variety of spaces to settle in. The gift shop is a nice touch, too. Cons: We came ready to get a full day of work done, bought our coffees and food and sat down, only to find they don't have wifi until 3 pm! I've literally never heard of such a strange thing. According to the staff, "the owner doesn't turn on the wifi until 3pm". What on earth? Basically, if you want to come and work you better have your own hotspot. Didn't know that before we arrived, and was pretty disappointed, so instead of working there for the day and spending more money on their food, we left early. Plus we were sitting down in the lower area on the couches and there was a strange odor that lingered around, so that wasn't exactly tempting us to stay. Also, they make all kinds of gluten-free muffins, but none are safe for those with allergies/gluten sensitivity, so what's the point?? Overall, the atmosphere and location are unique and it's worth a stop for the coffee itself. But it's got strange quirks! read more

Loved stopping in while driving down the coast. We were lucky enough to find parking on the street a little ways down. This place has seating everywhere, inside, outside, upstairs, downstairs... The menu is vast and baked goods a'plenty. I ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee and it's probably the best one I've ever had.. we also split one of their breakfast burritos and took a couple treats home for later. The pastry case is always filled with pies, cakes, freshly baked muffins. I appreciate how many different gluten free muffin flavors are available. The lemon poppyseed is tart and soft without being too sweet. The outdoor seating overlooks Highway 101 and is a relaxing place to enjoy your drinks. The six of us really enjoyed our brunch here and loved the spacious outdoor patio, perfect for bringing our dogs along! Our San Diego local friends recommended this spot, and it turned out to be a great choice. The line to order was a bit long on a Sunday morning, but it was definitely worth the wait. You know, I've grown up with this place as one of thee primary coffee institutions of the area. I wonder if there would even be so many different coffee shops around if it wasn't for this spot. It's a wonderfully quaint repurposed train station that also functions as a historic monument. They have a wide array of pastries and goodies that harken back to the 90s aethetics that has mostly been lost from most of the 3rd wave coffee shops popping up all other the place. I will say that food wise, they charge as much as any other breakfast restaurant while serving food on par with a college dormitory cafeteria...which I feel they are only able to get away with because of all the nostalgia wrapped around this place. Ultimately I am happy that this place is still around, it's fun to hang out and people watch a bit, but it also no longer feels like a spot that would be a weekly haunt for me, more for when people are visiting from out of town. read more

This place is a standard in San Diego County. If you are in North County Coastal San Diego (Encinitas), this is the place to go for a brew. I'm a strict black coffee or Americano drinker, no additions. Pannikin always nails it. The parking lot is on the smaller side and typically full. Street parking is key. Currently, they are doing a remodel inside so the coffee counter is out front. Great coffee, relaxed vibe, and a very comfortable place inside and out with plenty of seating. cruising up the PCH from the Seaside Market in Cardiff i glanced over my shoulder and saw a yellow looking house with a giant sign out front said Pannikin. Since i was driving I did not stare too long but noticed on the sign was a picture of a kettle. I was on route to Carlsbad when i decided to take a quick Uturn. I am a Tea Connoisseur so had to stop in to see what this place was about. immediatly walked into the loose leaf section and gawked at a wall of goodness. the lady working behind the counter was helpful with my questions and I got a lot of good intel about the area. I live 2 hours north so my Orange County weekends are more like vacations. I ended up getting a coconut ginger blend tea. it was as awesome as that sounds. I drank half of it hot and the other half over ice. both versions were delectable. I normally go for just natural nothing blended style teas but they had such an amazing variety i had to try this one. the interior vibes are so chill and relaxing. This place is Totally my cup O TEA! This is my favorite tea spot i have discovered yet. apparently they have several locations but i doubt they are as cool as this location. not too far from the ocean. I love Pannikin!! There's no other cafe that has this ambiance, truly one of a kind. I've tried so many things off their menu, there's nothing I wouldn't recommend. This was the first time I ordered the Yerba, quiche/salad combo, and chocolate cake! They were all super good. Quiche- perfect always Mango chutney chicken salad- sooo good I didn't even use the dressing that accompanied it! Disappointed this time, instead of the yummy latte I was expecting, I got essentially a "Cafe au lait". Gf blueberry muffin was awesome, to be sure, but the latte was sad. After the 17 years that I've been coming here, the quality of the food has never changed. The service is relatively fast and the workers are kind (it often gets busy, so don't blame the workers for being slow! They're ensuring that you get the quality food they are known for). Amazing ambiance. On the side of the road overlooking the street you can watch runners and bikers go by, or go inside and sit upstairs or downstairs in their new seating area downstairs. Back in the day I worked in the Gaslamp and Pannikin had a cool spot in the heart of downtown. They didn't stay there though. Still, I remember the experience. Labor Day Weekend, I ordered a Double Hammerhead and a breakfast sandwich on their sprouted wheat. I ordered my boyfriend the Bacon Breakfast Burrito and a Large coffee Half Sweet. All were extremely good. That food and coffee made my morning even though I chose to DoorDash Dash it. Thank you for feeding us! I had a brief visit here a while back. I had driven by here multiple times and finally had time to stop by. This charming coastal coffee shop is set up inside the old train station for Encinitas. Love the interior and the decor. The building is opened up and very airy. The coastal breezes weave in and out keeping everyone comfortable. I wasn't looking for anything to eat so I of course had to try their Matcha. After I placed my order I discovered the global tea and coffee room. What a wonderful find. So many teas and coffees to choose from. They offer black teas, oolong, organic teas, green teas and some strong smelling coffee beans. All fresh and waiting for one to purchase. The outdoor sun-drenched patio was so inviting on the day I came, I truly enjoyed sitting outside and people watching. My only disappointment was my drink. I realize Matchas are not every coffee/tea places specialty but this one was just tasteless. Service was quick and efficient but not overly friendly. Glad I stopped by and perhaps I will return on another day to try some of their teas. These all looked really good. read more
