After reading Ridgefield Lifestyle's cover story, "The Art of Hospitality," I decided to return to Ross's Bread with renewed optimism and, naturally, a stopwatch. The article references the Savoy Hotel, Danny Meyer's hospitality group, "the pursuit of excellence," and repeated commitments to quality and consistency. So I thought perhaps, at long last, the espresso situation had been resolved. Reader, it had not. I ordered a Cortado to stay. "Would you like that in a mug for here or a paper cup?" An encouraging start. I then positioned myself beside the espresso machine like a wildlife documentarian returning to observe a rare but persistent behavioral phenomenon. The barista dosed the portafilter, then tamped the coffee while holding the portafilter in midair, applying what appeared to be approximately the amount of pressure required to test whether an avocado is ripe. He locked it into the machine and pressed start. Brown liquid immediately exploded from the spouts with absolutely no delay whatsoever. The shot was over in roughly four seconds. For those unfamiliar with espresso, this is generally considered suboptimal. The resulting Cortado tasted primarily of hot milk and faintly burnt coffee sadness. After two and a half confirmation sips, I quietly left the remainder on the counter and departed. At this point I no longer review Ross's espresso. I monitor it. read more

Disappointed. Recently bought a loaf of Ross' Ciabatta bread. Price $6.25. The crust is okay but when I slice the loaf with a serrated bead knife the bread tears and is powdery, rendering the bread useless. Am unhappy because we seriously needed the bread THAT day. Someone I know said that she has eaten bread from all over the world and nothing compares with the bread they sell here. I was on the way up to the area and the family decided to visit this place before we head to our final destination. We figured that we would stop by this cafe for a quick coffee and a quick bite to eat. The place is quite small with very limited seating. It was about make 8 - 10 seats at the most. They have a full menu of baked goods and a menu for savory dishes. We ordered the mozzarella tomato and prosciutto I believe it was sandwich. It was good, however I wish that the sandwich came warmed up like a panini. Besides that, everything else as great. The one other thing was it took a while for our coffee to come out. Croissants are solid, fresh, crispy outside and chewy inside, like they're supposed to be. The baguettes are another standout; perfect when paired with cheese from next door at the cheese shop. Sandwiches are usually tasty, but post-covid era have gotten a little skimpy. Shrinkflation strikes us all, I fear. If you want bagels (as other reviewers seem to) this is not the place. A gem of a coffee shop! Stumble On this place while running errands and absolutely love the place. To be fair I've only tried the breakfast options so far but I'm a a fan. My go to's are usually the breakfast sandwich with some kind of protein added or the avocado toast (sandwich) with regular egg added. It's so stinkin good! They are always busy but turn orders fairly quickly and there's always a fresh selection of breads offered daily. I don't get all the hype. I've tried this place three times and have struck out each time. Either they're out, they don't carry what I want or what I asked for is not what I received. I just bought an everything bagel for $2.95 with nothing on it. Cold and hard in a brown paper bag. Asked another time for some other bread (I forget which kind, Italian? Sourdough? Cuban?) and they said they don't make it. A third time I asked the young lady behind the counter what they are known for, and she recommended some artisan bread. Bought it. Hated it. Now please understand ...I grew up in a city with little neighborhood bakeries. Real Bread that came out of brick ovens. Mindbendingly amazing....So maybe my expectations are too high. Also Ross' is outrageously overpriced. $9.00 for 1/4 lb of egg salad? $2.95 for a hard and cold bagel? You decide, but I simply don't get it. read more

Yes, the prices are very high. The croissant was almost $5.00. It was pretty good but not like the great, delicious buttery and soft croissant I get at my favorite bakery. The blondie did not taste fresh. The large chicken pot pie was quite good- and a lighter type of crust than your usual chicken pot pie. The pie is worthy of 4 stars for sure.. We came for the restaurant week special and sampled the trifecta for breakfast (coffee + breakfast sandwich + croissant + chocolate croissant). Best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Didn't previously know about Ross' Bread, but will now be a regular customer - their table in the back had a very comfortable bench and I can definitely see myself camping out here in the morning with my laptop. I had a delightful lunchtime dining experience today at this coffee shop tucked inside that labyrinth known as Copp's Hill Plaza in Ridgefield. Not the easiest place to navigate but after a short wander, we found ourselves directly in front of the shop. My husband ordered a latte and a turkey and Swiss cheese sandwich in deliciously freshly baked bread while I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich. Mine came piping hot from the kitchen and the bread had a wonderful texture and taste - not even sure what kind of bread it was but it tasted wheaty and nutty at the same time. I also had a nicely chilled lemonade. All the outdoor tables were occupied on this gloriously sunny day so we sat at a small cafe table indoors to enjoy our lunches in a relaxed and coolly comfortable environment. My dessert is really what makes me sing to the heavens. I had a seasonal strawberry cake with a truly divine cream cheese frosting piped in delectable swirls across the top. It was utterly delectable and the topping was the lightest and tastiest cream cheese frosting that ever pleasured my tastebuds! I fought hard to resist the urge to bring home another sample for a night-time snack because I knew it would never make it to sundown in my house. I did bring home a wonderfully light, buttery and crusty croissant and can not remember the last time I had one that was that good. Friendly and attentive service along with the tasty treats was the cherry on top. So glad we finally found this place. We will return SOON! read more

HEARTBROKEN. I go for coffee at Ross Bread 3-4 times a week. I rarely stay for longer than it takes to run in and run out, but occasionally - less than 10 times over the last 5 years - I've taken out my laptop and stayed longer. Very rarely. Only when I'm on a strict deadline to finish a book, and being away from my house helps me work. But when I do this, I always double order - two drinks and two food items, so that I'm essentially paying for the use of their space. Even though "coffee shop culture" encourages people to linger, I figure that's the polite thing to do. This morning, after I'd been there for 90 min, one of the owners came up to me, gestured to my two empty cups and two empty plates and said, "Are you done?" I said I was. She brusquely asked, "Do you want to order anything else or...?" She seemed so annoyed, I said, "No...are you asking me to leave?" She said, "Well, we're really busy and have some folks in the front without a seat." So I packed up my stuff and left...because I didn't feel as though I had a choice. I didn't feel welcome to stay. But now, sitting in the parking lot of the library and waiting for it to open, I feel really angry. I've spent THOUSANDS of dollars at Ross Bread over the past five years. I've gone to this coffee shop to get cakes and pies, ordered hundreds of dollars of pastries in a single order to bring to breakfasts and brunches. Plus just my daily foot traffic to grab coffee or a pastry or dog treats. I know all of the regular staff (whom I adore, especially Shannon and Sara) and owner, Eric, with whom I often chat for a few minutes when I visit, by name. I'm a really loyal customer. I know this will sound dumb, but my feelings are hurt. And yes, I was extremely embarrassed. And that makes me angry and sad. I think I will give Ka-Fo, Tazza or Tusk & Cup a try from now on. But I would strenuously suggest that Eric and Amy post a sign (or several) that warn laptop users that they will be asked to leave after 90 min, regardless of whether they're paying customers or not. It would certainly cut down on embarrassment and/or hurt feelings. I now go out of my way to breakfast at this cafe, because the food is freshly prepared, they have organic freshly squeezed orange juice for consumption and the sweetest staff. Always Young and friendly. I like their bread and their soup as well. They have a new addition, a tiny little lending library which was great for me, and I managed to read a few pages of the Perks of being a wallflower before I returned it on my way out. It took me a while though to like this cafe, as the first time I stopped here was for a "freshly prepared homemade lemonade" in the summer 3 years ago and that turned out to be really horrible, overly sweet and not at all tasty. read more

Three times I've been here. The first was to get bread to take to a dinner function. I'd heard people rave about this place. The bread-baguette-was way too hard and tasteless. The second time I went for coffee and a bagel. I waited 25 minutes for a toasted everything bagel with cream cheese and when it was brought out, it was a plain bagel. I told the worker, "I ordered an everything bagel". She sighed, rolled her eyes and slouched away. 8 minutes later I had the bagel and it was really good. So good, I wanted to go back. I ordered 2 chocolate chunk cookies for the kids and a roasted everything bagel with cream cheese. After 15 minutes, the bagel came out. It was of course a plain bagel. I took it and left. I won't be back. The bespectacled girl in the back moves like a snail. There doesn't seem to be anyone in charge. And you sell two types of bagels, how hard is it to get an everything bagel? Absolutely the best bread, muffins, scones and coffee in the area! I stop in at least 4 times a week. Favorites are the Sweet Earth bread, baguettes, monkey bread (way more delicious than a cinnamon roll!) and corn muffins. Their lunch menu is also amazing.
