on December 21, 2025, between approximately 12:00 PM and 12:48 PM. My mother, my minor daughter (age 15), and I entered the store to shop for Christmas gifts. Immediately upon entry, we were singled out and subjected to prolonged and targeted surveillance without cause. While we were initially greeted by a courteous security guard, a Caucasian male employee wearing a face mask began staring at us and proceeded to follow my mother and my minor child throughout nearly every department of the store for approximately 35-40 minutes. This employee repeatedly hovered in close proximity while pretending to straighten merchandise, including in the shoe department, the Christmas section, and the men's shoe department. His actions were continuous, deliberate, and clearly focused on my family--specifically my minor child and elder mother. When we approached the checkout line, this individual positioned himself directly in the jewelry are next to the line and pretended to be on a phone call, continuing his monitoring behavior. Separately, while I shopped independently in the skincare/beauty section and moved through the girls' clothing and baby aisles, a second individual dressed in black clothing--without a shopping cart or merchandise--repeatedly circled the same areas I entered, maintaining constant visual surveillance. This conduct was intimidating, intrusive, and coordinated. At no point were we approached, questioned, or accused of any wrongdoing. We engaged in no behavior that would justify suspicion or monitoring. The only apparent basis for this treatment was our appearance. The targeted following of a minor child and her family under these circumstances constitutes discriminatory conduct and created a hostile and humiliating shopping environment. One of the reviewers here was offended that he couldn't take the carts outside the store. Anthony L. Like, you literally can't take the carts outside. There's a tall pole on one side that you may have noticed. it will physically prevent you from taking the cart through the door. Shopping carts are $500-$600 each, and that's for a plain generic metal cart. The guard was trying to save you the trouble of getting stuck in the door. And you got home and wrote your review, never realizing that it's physically, actually, factually impossible to do what you're complaining they wouldn't allow you to do. read more

Some of the reviews are baffling. Complaints are about routine "procedures" in every Ross I've been to, and I've been to probably 2 dozen different Ross stores. Carts cannot leave the store. Stores will only give credit for current sale price if no receipt. This is actually common at more than just Ross. 3 stars for actually having a decent amount of inventory and the sweetest loss prevention girl. The reason I am giving low stars is for the lack of safety. I understand they are closing this location down, but per staff, there has been no light in the parking lot for a year now. This is a huge safety issue for customers AND team members leaving at the end of their shift. I actually felt uncomfortable and don't usually feel like that. Can only imagine how the staff feels. Shame on the complex and store manager for not making this an issue with an unknown closure date!! I have a strong "like" for Ross stores. However, this one -- not so much. In fact, it's the worst Ross I've ever shopped at. Few cashiers makes a very long line of customers, along with dirty, small inventory, and messy -- doesn't make it in my book. For the general area, hit up: TJ Maxx in San Mateo (great store), followed by Marshall's in San Mateo (Bridgepointe), before heading this way. They are remodeling right now so it became a small ross and things are kind of hard to find. They also have less workers now which it takes longer to pay since they will only have one cashier and maybe call a second one. The cashier I got was pretty nice. I am not giving it less than 3 stars because I understand they are remodeling the place so it won't be all nice and organized. Plus, it is a ross and we go to ross to find good stuff for cheap. There are other ross that are bigger too, but this is the closest one so I can't complain. I haven't have any bad experiences in this ross. There are plenty of party outside too. read more

Biggest draw for me here at Ross just like Marshall's, are their discounted dog toys! They have some really good varieties and very good qualities too, usually for under $5. In comparison to chain pet stores, you'd end up paying $20 for it and quality is not nearly as good!! And for someone who has a big dog that likes to chew things and create a stuffing of snowball effect out in the yard a few times a week, Ross comes in handy!! Anyways.... hahaha a good find I got today was a tree shear and branch pruning for under $10 with lifetime warranty? Whaaaat? With stainless steel blades and advertised to never need sharpening. I tried it out folks and for that kind of money, this $10 shear trimmed our tree branches buttery smooth!! The other great find that I also got today was a sandal for under $13. It's a good thing since I've had my old one with duck taped all over it for I don't know how long. Cha-ching!! So if you've got the time, you love to shop and you love bargains, Ross could be your best friend for life!! Normally I'd say this is my favorite Ross because I have been coming here with my mother since I was a kid. But lately I've grown to dislike the place. I literally just left the store from shopping and let me tell you, I have never had a more uncomfortable shopping experience EVER! I've started coming to the store now with my fiancé and 11 month old baby. We've been frequent shoppers at this store and every time we come it's the same story all over again. I understand security has to do their job and look out for possible theft but man this security is something else! EVERY TIME I have to come shop here with my son and fiancé, the security always follows us around as if we're going to steal something. I would like to make a point that I would never be a bad influence on my son and steal. I come to shop with my wallet ready every time. And I love to shop at Ross because you get good stuff for a good deal. But as of recently, my shopping experiences have left me very uncomfortable. Today, every corner I went and turned around to, there was a security guard there, and he would turn around and act as if he wasn't following me. They were following my fiancé and I with our son for the WHOLE time we were there. It upsets me because I don't know what the deal is! I'm a frequent shopper and I ALWAYS pay for everything I buy. For some reason, security always makes it a point to make my family stand out by always following us around. It got to a point today where I HAD to go to an employee and let them know that security was making me feel uncomfortable by following us around the whole store. It's a horrible feeling being profiled like that especially when I'm shopping with my son! I had to cut my store trip short today because it really rubbed me the wrong way. Since moving I haven't purchased that many candles for the house, but since it's getting closer to fall I figured we could swing by before our Safeway run. Enter in this, if I may be so bold, janky as heck Ross. Not only was their Yankee Candle game pretty poor, the customer service was middling and the general organization of the store was ten times worse than the not-so-great area Ross in downtown San Jose. Okay. These four stars are a little much...but hear me out. This little random lot with Rite Aid, TJ Maxx, Ross, and Trader Joe's is pretty bleak. Everything is pretty dated, dull, and dreary. I needed to find some baby clothes for a gift, and I wanted to take a chance on this Ross. I was hesitant to get out of my car because I drove past the doors I saw about 15 people entering and 15 exiting the store. I groaned because this meant that I'd chosen the wrong time of day (Sunday at 2:30 p.m.) to shop for baby clothes. I sucked in my breath, gritted my teeth, and entered the store. Was it a madhouse? Yes. Was the line long? Yes. HOWEVER, this Ross was WELL stocked. For what it lacks in outward appearance, it brings the fire with its merchandise. Women's shoes ranged in sizes 4 to 12. While perusing the shoes I saw the following brand all for under $30: Kelsi Dagger, Ugg, Steve Madden, Dolce Vita, Sam Edelman, Adidas, Puma, and so much more. There were trendy sandals (a la Rihanna's Puma Fenty slides), comfort shoes, boots, heels, mules---SO MANY THINGS. I didn't see any shoes on the ground, and I saw a salesperson walking through and making sure everything was in tip top shape. 1 STAR The purses, accessories, and beauty area was PACKED to the brim. Crossbody bags, backpacks, satchels, scarves, head bands, facial masks, contour kits, bath salts, name brand hair conditioner and shampoo, and fitness equipment were ready to be purchased. Everything seemed to be in good condition and was fairly organized. 1 STAR Since I was there to buy baby clothes, I made a beeline to the kids' section. It finally hit me why the store was busy--BACK TO SCHOOL. This might also be why the store was so stocked. Nevertheless, the kids' section was amazing. There were several racks for newborn to 24 months, racks upon racks for toddlers, and many options for kids and tweens. In the shoes, I saw Puma, KSwiss, Nike, Jordan, Adidas, Madden Girl, and Sam Edelman. I saw Supreme t-shirts and backpacks, Under Armour shirts and pants, soccer cleats, emoji backpacks and lunch boxes, binders,---oh my gosh. SO MUCH!!! If your kids who want better than you can afford, Ross around July and August should be your go-to spot. I was able to find some adorable baby clothes for about $4 per set. 1 STAR I briefly browsed the women's clothes and found juniors, misses, and plus sizes with many available options. I got in line and tried to be patient. There were 10 people ahead of me, and I only waited in line for about 10 minutes. Every register had a cashier, the cashiers were calling next customers as soon as the current customer swiped their card or paid with cash. It seems impersonal, but hey. The only Ross I've ever been to where you have to allocate 20+ minutes to waiting in line. (Have I not been to enough?) You don't go to a Ross expecting service, organized sections, pleasant scents, or cleanliness. You go there with the same ready-to-rummage-through-trash mentality you would if you were going to a garage sale (although the last time I went to one, I was 11) - except everything is NEW. (Well, almost. I've seen people return entire carts of items that look like they might've been used... but that's why you only buy something that you see at least 3 of.) --- REASONS TO GO TO ROSS --- * Sets of pretty red/white wine glasses (classic or stemless), champagne flutes, martini glasses, margarita glasses + matching pitchers, beer mugs, pretty shot glasses * Stainless steel hangers * Wood hangers * Kitchenware Every once in a while, you'd be shocked to find that you can find things like Egyptian Cotton sheets, Sleep Warmers, and those Nine West/Steve Madden pumps you remember seeing for $100 - $19.99 at Ross. ... Um...after reading the other reviews I'm almost sheepish to write mine. I love this Ross and have never had a bad experience here. Okay, so it's a Ross. That's why I come here. Lots of designer stuff on overcrowded racks that I have to spend hours sifting through until I find just the right thing, only to wait in line for 30 minutes to find out that there's no price tag and have to wait another 10 minutes for the floor staff to find another similar shirt so I can pay $7 for something that would have cost me $55 at Macy's and just as much time to find parking at the mall, walk into the store, browse through the 5 floors of clothing, checkout, walk back to my car and fight my way out of the mall traffic. All this for less then the price of a movie and I don't reek like popcorn afterwards. I love it. read more

We've been shopping at Ross stores around the bay area for about twenty years, back when Ross first opened up in the lakeshore plaza in SF. We've never heard this. Even the back of the receipt doesn't mention anything about a 24 hour return policy. I can't believe the customer service lady straight up lied to avoid doing any work. ZERO stars for this Ross store in particular!!! DO NOT GO HERE YOU ARE WARNED. At our return the lady who helped us out, Karen, was EXTREMELY off putting and RUDE! I've never had any problems with the Ross, Marshals or TJMaxx chains and in every other store from the bay to central valley has been helpful and kind. Shopping in these chains makes returns and exchanges easy if something doesn't work right after you take it home or so on because it is an outlet store. I bought a pair of pants, a bra, and some shoes a few days ago. I wore each of them once. My boyfriend noticed one of the pant leg seams was sewn incorrectly, the bra was uncomfortable, and the shoes hurt everywhere. We also bought a few other items but those were fine. We spent around $95 bucks, and wanted to return about $30 bucks of items. The women who helped us kept accusing us of having the wrong items and refusing to return them because she was too lazy to look them up in the system. When we bought them another lady rang up the pants since they didn't have an original tag as something else. We went and found the items in the store and she used those tags to find the items in the system so we could return them. We were successful at returning the pants and bra after having to be forceful and stubborn but she still refused the shoes since they were "worn", for half a day. All and all the return was extremely stressful and the whole time we were being treat with detest. She kept calling her manager over and threatening to check the video tapes of the store, like we were lying or to scare us off so she wouldn't have to do her job. They were both(Karen and her manager) unwilling to help find a solution and treat us like a problem they just wanted to get rid of. I'm only sharing this experience in hopes no one will receive the same treatment. If you decide to shop at this Ross location you are doing it at your own risk. I would strongly suggest a TJMaxx or another one of this chains stores elsewhere. read more

Came here 4/20/21 to make a couple returns and purchases. Returns were WITHIN the return date (purchased 4/10/21) and the dumb cashier (Associate: 525229) without my consent put my return on a voucher instead of back on my card. The young girl with black long hair should stay in school if she can't even do her job properly at a retail space like Ross. Manager told me there's "nothing they can do" even though they admitted it was wrong that their own employee failed to do their job properly since the voucher was already made. I call BS. read more

They have the rudest cashier at customer service named Sharell who purposely made the return line wait when they only do returns at customer service she was taking purchases when asked why we had to wait she said look i help who i want so u need to wait when there were 2 cashiers basically waiting around on other stands that could have done the purchases. I cant believe they would put someone like this at the customer service counter. And to top off her attitude the items that were returned she tossed them on the floor like they were garbage... way to care about your merchandise. I would never go here again. I showed up to this Ross last night just as four San Mateo police officers showed up to bust some master criminal at Rite Aid. Some items more disturbing than the SWAT team at Rite Aid: 1. Giant Floor Hump: There is a 12" tall hump in the floor under the ladies section. This can't be good for the structural integrity of this building. 2. Stock: As in, there is no stock. This is literally the most picked over Ross ever. 3. Dirty: This place needs ammonia and 50 gallons of paint. I've been here four times and left empty handed every time. Just stepped out of Ross where they asked me to leave because I had a bottle of water in my hand in 104 degree whether. They did it rudely too. The "security" guard asked me whether or not water was a drink. I guess he was trying to be "smart". Apparently they can't care less if you pass out out of dehydration. No food or drink inside regardless of people's health issues. I'm sure your security guy is trained in first aid and how to medically assist people who get heat stroke or severe dehydration symptoms. Way to go Ross. SO impolite, inconsiderate, rude and unprofessional of you. I guess it makes sense though with all the people dumping water on clothes and demanding a discount. Staff working here ignore our needs and voices at Ross San Mateo. My mom and I arrived here around 4:30pm and looked for the jewelry section that is right at the front door. We would like to check some of the jewelry out at the time, but no one is coming up and helping us, so we decided we should look for the other section first then maybe come back later. After around 20 minutes of shopping, we finished visiting other sections and got what we wanted, ready for checkout. At the time, my mom standing at the jewelry section, and I was in the line for checkout, thinking maybe I if can ask for help. No one was helping out my mom until I was the next person for the checkout, but the person was helping out the other person who has just came. I told the staff that I was the first one in the line and was willing to ask for help. I also show my dissapointment to her. However, I can tell she ignore my "comment" because she had no responses. After we "asked for" what we needed, the person asked us to line up again for the line with around 20 person in it. It takes until 5:30pm for us to get out of the store with what we needed. read more

My elderly mom came here and wanted to purchase a bench. She asked an associate if someone could help her put it on the cart. They said no, she had to do it herself. As she was struggling to get it on the cart, a nice customer offered their assistance. Then after purchasing the bench, she asked another associate if someone could help her load the bench into her car. They said no. Luckily another customer walking by offered to help. Products are ok but lines get long at times because they don't want to pay as many cashiers as are needed. There are as many "loss prevention" staff visible as there are cashiers because that's what the priorities are here, not getting you checked out quickly. For returns have to wait in the same long purchase line because of course they don't want to pay someone to handle returns. A remodel is still in progress after quite a few months. Better now but for a while only a small part of the store was open and much less product was available for purchase. read more

This is the dirtiest ross I've ever been in. I browsed pretty much every section of the store and they were all disorganized and straight up dirty. The clothes-there were clothes draped over the racks, there were clothes on the floor, the clothes were shoved in the racks so tight it made it difficult to shop. The housewares-NOTHING was recovered. There were rugs and floor mats on the floor. would you want a floor mat that someone had been "testing" or little kids have been playing on? Yea, me neither. Towels were unfolded on the shelves. There was also very little selection at all. Disappointing. The shoes- messy, messy, messy. SHOES EVERYWHERE. I would not have thought twice about the mess if it was a weekend, but it was a Tuesday afternoon. There should be a little more effort in keeping the store clean. Also, the workers there were not very friendly. I got a greeting when i walked in from the security guard, but thats about it. When I got to the registers, no greeting, the cashier was not really paying attention, she was doing something else while yacking with her co workers who was hanging clothes behind the registers (instead of cleaning the store, which desperately needed to be done.) When the transaction was over, i had to grab my own receipt because the cashier was too busy with what ever BS she was doing. I just moved here from the east bay and was so excited there was a ross so close to me, but I guess I'll have to find another one because I will not be returning. read more

This location definitely has a lot more to choose from compared to the one that is closer to my house in Daly City. We walked in and saw that they dangerously placed the women's shoe section to the right of the entrance. I was a little confused on where to find shoes for my size 8 feet, but then I discovered that there were two rows of shoes and my section was a little ways away. Pretty confusing layout, but I found gold. My boyfriend had been picking out boots for me and we came across these brown, multi-zipper, strappy looking ones and they fit perfectly! Probably my new favorite pair (after the other pair of boots that I got from Ross a couple weeks ago). After that we scurried around the pet section to find treats for our little one and we came across a $7 bone (which was HUGE) and a large water dispenser to replace the one that we have now. After that we wandered through the mens section and I picked out a jacked for my boyfriend and he found a bow and pocket square set he liked. Ross is absolutely dangerous, even if you just plan on "browsing". And unfortunately, I always find myself walking out both broke and satisfied. But anyways, if you're in the mood to splurge or treat yourself to something, I highly recommend Ross. All of them. read more
