I had a very poor customer service experience at the Francesca's in San Mateo, CA on December 30, 2025, around 6:40 PM. I came in to return two dresses that did not fit. Both items were unworn, had tags attached, and I had the original receipt. The associate assisting me, Ashley (Associate ID 224228), aggressively attempted to refuse the return, stating that I needed the original card used for purchase. When I asked where this requirement was stated in the return policy, she could not provide an answer and continued responding in a hostile manner. After an uncomfortable back-and-forth, the return was eventually processed. At the end of the transaction, she told me to make sure I brought my original card next time. When I replied "sure," she responded, "don't you sure me." I was extremely taken aback by this comment. When I mentioned that I had never had this issue at Francesca's before, she continued to imply that I was the problem. This interaction was completely unacceptable. Regardless of the situation, customers should be treated with basic courtesy and respect. Unfortunately, this experience has left a very negative impression of this location. Overall, I would encourage higher management to review these yelp reviews carefully as there truly appears to be a clear trend of unpleasant customer interactions with this particular store. My wife tried to return and item about 2 weeks ago. The staff said their computer system was not working and were unable to conduct a return. We said ok we can return at a later date. Two weeks laters and the same situation. What kind of company doesn't resolve and computer issue? We were advised to go to the Burlingame store for returns. They didn't even offer to extend or allow to return our items indefinitely. We had to ask to extend their return policy since now we have go to a different city to make a simple return. Customer service at this store is the WORST I have ever experienced. Even though the store has not been able to process returns for the past three days, the employees neither bothered to put up a sign nor notify any customer who was shopping. Employees explicitly ignore direction from their own corporate headquarters to notify all customers that this store is currently unable to process returns. Employees erroneously claim that no Francesca's store is able to process returns. Actually, the Burlingame store has been processing returns for the Hillsdale store. It's too bad that the customer service at the Hillsdale store is so bad because the clothes are cute. read more

Walked in with the door still open and the associate said they were closed. It was 15 minutes until they actually close the store according to their hours online. This location has gone so down hill since they have reopened after the shutdown, the people who work here really don't care (and I can vouch since I did work at this location and we used to be drilled on customer service) and their hours now just don't even compete with how late the rest of the mall stays open now. This location when I worked here closes at 9 and I think it's time for those hours to come back if they want business. Not sure if it's worth my energy to come back. read more

I was in on a Monday early afternoon. I don't know if I just have high standards or if these girls just really don't care. I was in store for max 20 minutes. No acknowledgment at all, and I wasn't even the only person in the store they didn't acknowledge anyone. They were talking about personal stuff the entire time where everyone could hear the conversation. I used to work at a Francesca's years ago and my god the standards for training, someone needs to do better. I also wanted to note that the fitting rooms were full of product, I put a photo of all the things that were not mine in the room... probably going to be there for hours before they get the motivation to do their job and put them back. Stop for coffee at the mall with a friend after workout...end up buying things! This mall is kind of sad. There's some food, but it really isn't the place to be. But, Francesca's is! Why? 1. I love all the funny little cat knick knacks they have! Kind of like Urban Outfitters style of hilarious things. 2. Many would forget, but Francesca's actually does have pretty cute clothes. I got a dress on sale for $20. Not bad at all. (Some of the dresses and clothes fit weirdly though.) It is a small store, but they jam pack it with clothes and gems. Service was okay. Weirdly enough, they paid attention to people who were just browsing but ignored me despite me grabbing like 10 items to try on (later she did come ask how I was doing). Whatevs, it isn't Neiman Marcus. Anyway, I got a dress for $20. I am picky. That is progress. read more

I bought something and then checked the website once I left the store and found out it was $10 cheaper, when I went back and asked if they could price match. the lady did it with an attitude and then told me "next time just buy it online" but you can't check online while you're in the store because there is no phone service! the store associate "alecia" has a major attitude issue and should not be working in customer service. to top it off, once I left and looked at the receipt, she didn't even match it correctly and charged me an extra two dollars more then the website price, but at that point I was too anxious to go back and tell her. read more

Never had I ever thought the employees would try to trick me into giving my email for their rewards or email newsletter sign up. I took my mom on her birthday to get some cute jewelry pieces that were affordable and we went home to try them and it didn't work out. We went back the next day trying to return the items we have just purchased. The girl Imane at the register said they needed our name, email, and phone number just to return an item. I thought it we super strange because usually a return is a return and nothing is needed but the receipt so at first we were like no we don't have a account with you thinking we signed up already. But then she said we couldn't return unless we gave them our information. My mom couldn't read the screen so she agreed on the screen but I got suspicious so I gave them a fake email and phone number because I don't like dirty tricks like that and I don't just give out my information to places I don't regularly shop at. And when we walked in she was on her phone playing around so clearly she didn't really care and only wanted us to sign up so she could get recognized at work for her "hard work" on getting sign ups. I think those are pretty cheap tricks and don't get me wrong, I like the shop and what they have but the employees need to be better and need to learn to just ask and accept the fact that people don't want millions of sales emails and giving personal information out. This is one of those places that regardless of their location, which are plentiful, you're almost obligated to walk into if you're a girl/woman. I can't resist, despite that they're a low-end boutique, disposable clothing and accessories. Most of the stuff I've ever bought from them has been an impulsive buy, knowing full well it's kinda faddy and I'll quickly outgrow my fascination for it. Does it ever stop me? Nope. So the fact that this place incents me to spend money from them likely says something positive. But sadly the Hillsdale mall location was the worst experience the lady's were not helpful & not friendly it felt like they didn't want to be there. Worst customer service. You can walk into this store pass by all the employees who are in a rush to get their things done--which consists of gossiping amongst themselves--and almost run you over, but nobody will say hello or goodbye. I picked up a few items that I was intending to buy, but since it just seemed like I was in the way of the employee trying to get to the back room, I placed all the things back and walked out. I'm not saying that I need someone to be my personal assistant and shop for me, but if I go into a store to shop and the employee makes it seem like I'm 1. Non-existent, 2. A burden because they have to walk around you while you're browsing, 3. A nuisance because they have to stop gossiping to do the job they're paid to do that's not a store that deserves any of my money. I'm a fan. Even though they were about to close the store (came here 10 min. before 9pm), I was still greeted by a friendly staff member. This is huge. I used to work in retail and I HATED everyone who came in 15 min. before we would close. I always remember that I can count on Francesca to find a great dress on the cheap. They have a wide variety of styles and colors for every occasion. I called in today to see if they had a blue dress I'd seen on the website in stock. The sales associate who helped me (her name was Holly) was SO incredibly helpful and sweet! She actually went around the store for me and hunted down the exact dress I was looking for. Turns out they never had this particular dress in store and this must have been a customer return from an online order, so the fact that she managed to find it was no easy feat. Love this store! They opened last Saturday, June 9th. This is definitely a store that was needed at Hillsdale. It's so much easier to park here than the one in Burlingame and they have better stuff. The staff is really nice and very very helpful. I will definitely be here again within the next 2 weeks and there will be one opening soon at the Westfield Shopping Mall in Downtown SF. read more

I'm giving one star because of HOW HOT it was in the store I came to this location during the weekend of course the mall was super busy but there was so many people inside the location and I understand everyone's wants to shop but lord Jesus! As I walked in it was super warm I had my 3 month old with me and he was super red. I couldn't even try on clothes I also over heard other guest speaking about the temperature I joked around about how hot it was and one of the employees told me they deal with it everyday which is extremely unfair! Shame on you Francescas how can you have your employees working all day with no AC unit!! anyways I will not be returning here anymore can't deal with how packed and humid it was inside. read more

I thought I was exaggerating but most of the guest where complaining about the temperature in the store. It's not the first time I come in and it's super hot. The poor staff. The San Mateo store always has great collection of clothing and accessories. The prices are reasonable and there are often sales event going on from time to time. Yesterday I was there to look for a bracelet I saw on Francesca's website for my friend's birthday. The sales lady helped me look for it in the store but unfortunately they didn't carry it. She also helped me call the Burlingame store to see if they had it in stock. I ended up getting the bracelet online because it looks like the stores doesn't have it yet, but I am very grateful for the lady's assistance. read more

I love Francesca's and I like the new white bright store at this location. This is not the first time but every time I walk into this location I do not feel welcomed. The sales clerk does not greet everyone equally. Nothing when I walk in, okay, maybe she's busy. The next person, "hi, hello". What's the difference between me and her?! I don't know if it's a race thing, but I don't look like I can't afford anything in there, and even if that was the case. So I look at her dead in eyes and we just exchange looks. Rude! I walked throughout the store, no, "Do you need help with anything?" Crickets. I forget because I do not come to his location very often. The first time it happened, weird, I'm going to buy something, show her I'm a regular customer. The last time, same no greeting, I left, thinking I should call the manager. Then forgot. Today, I felt the same way and it all came back. I left with out purchasing the necklace I wanted. I do not want to spend my money there. I will call the manager/owner of the store location.
