This is the only coffee I have had in Richmond so far that I could not drink due to how poorly the beans are roasted, and how badly my shot was pulled. Set fittingly in a kitschy novelty shop, this establishment might work for you if what you really want is a milkshake, since I can imagine that like at Starbucks, that would have a chance of covering up the bitter, acrid taste of the espresso itself. I ordered a plain cappuccino, which came out scalding hot despite my "not too hot" request. After giving it a long time to cool, I took a few sips and simply left it on the counter, explaining it was un-drinkable. Flavor notes like "rotten sardine," "battery acid," and "cigarette ash" come to mind. Truly foul. For much, much better coffee in town, check out Parousia, Afterglow, or Paix. A wonderful shop that is missing a decent seating area - but otherwise a solid choice for any coffee enthusiast. Vast selection of beans, accessories, etc. to pick from - and appreciate the inclusion of a coffee bar where you can get something to go :) anywhere I go for the first time, I always just get a black coffee just to see what their baseline is and this was a wonderfully delicate cup with some pungent/bold flavors. Never had I ever been to place where they're actually making coffee and tea in the building until I had been here! It was so cool to see the machine behind the coffee making and I loved the homey feeling in the store. The staff were also very quick to take my order! They had a pretty cool menu too, lots of different flavors. When I went I got an iced oatmilk matcha and it was pretty good. I wish the matcha taste was bit stronger because for the most part it kinda of just tasted like oatmilk :/. However, i'm sure their menu has a lot more to offer. read more

Been here many times over the years and it's one of my favorite shops in Richmond. A little unconventional in terms of coffee shops, but love to see the roasting up close and I do enjoy all the different mugs for sale. Love being able to have whatever beans you choose ground right there for you and they offer different roasts in the cafe part as well. The staff is always so nice. read more

Such an underrated coffee shop!! Rostov's has sooo many fun goodies for purchase including coffee mug galore!! So many cute and diverse styles. They have so many teas and coffees to choose from and it's so affordable compared to some other shops. One of the feature drinks was an Irish cream cold brew - I wanted Irish cream but in a hot drink so they made it latte style and modified it to be less sweet than usual - it was perfect. The coffee I flew home to Florida was so good and we do get very good Cuban coffee but I'd definitely stop in and bring Rostov's coffee home again! I am not a coffee drinker. But I love Rostov's! I'm a tea drinker. Let me assure you not all iced tea is the same. From way back in RVA history The Butler's Pantry used Rostov's Richmond Blend tea as its house iced tea. I LOVE IT!!! Hot or cold, decaf or regular. Delicious with an interest flavor. Not overly floral or bitter. Just delicious with a bit of cinnamon. The staff are as knowledgeable about their teas as they are about the coffees. Don't miss trying it! read more

The staff were super friendly and willing to help. I got a pound of the Cuban coffee beans to grind at home and a dirty chai latte for the morning. Great place to pick up a coffee or tea if you're in the fan, but it also has a decent-sized store in there, selling things like cards, kitchen items, coffee/tea mugs, tea infusers and other coffee/tea accessories. I think what I really appreciate about Rostov's is they cater to both coffee and tea lovers! They have a huge wall of loose-leaf tea (and matcha), and I've picked up a few bags. My only con is that every time I've ordered iced tea it's never been very flavorful. A lot of the times they make hot tea and pour it over ice- the issue is the tea becomes super watered down, and comes out warm because all the ice melts. I'd prefer a cold brew method to make iced tea. In the future, I will be coming back for buying bags of tea, but I will not be ordering tea to go. read more

Oh my... just the aroma of Rostov's will have you steeped in felicity! Big burlap bags filled with deep, rich coffee beans greet by the door to welcome you into this euphoric caffeine paradise! I literally just stopped and took it all in! It smelled heavenly! A friendly fellow invited me to dig out a scoop and inhale the odoriferous beans! What to choose first? Beautiful colors of brown ranging from caramel to chestnut to dark chocolate enticed my senses! After sampling a few flavors, I settled upon a chocolate raspberry blend and a good old rich Cuban espresso. Then it was back to the grind for the kind shopkeeper who ground my beans to my taste! In the back of the shop are the extremely well organized loose leaf tea containers. They are color coded for easy selection: black teas, green teas, herbal teas, fruit teas & decaf teas. As a sinensophile, I was duly impressed with all of the choices! I settled upon the Duchess Grey, which has a hint of lavender in the blend! Delicious! And I couldn't pass up the smoky gunpowder tea!! Rows and rows of eclectic coffee and tea cups are artfully displayed throughout the store! Talk about the perfect mugshot! I saw mermaid cups, animal cups, three-legged cups, patterned cups, plain cups, Chinese cups, skeleton cups, floral cups and more! I love the octopus teapot and all the coffee & tea accoutrements uniquely chosen by the owner! As gifts, I purchased two cups with RVA designs on them, as well as a couple tea bags holders and tea filters. No matter how you like to brew your coffee or steep your tea, there's a pot, kettle, infuser or implement for you! Rostov's has been an RVA establishment for over 40 years!! This place is so cool and has amazing coffee. In the front of the store, they have a small shop and open air area where they bag their beans. Fantastic choices for loose leaf teas and whole bean coffee! Such a great institution for the RVA and you can tell why it's so popular - plus the service was great! They answered all my questions and gave great recommendations. Parking out front can be sparse but there is parking available in the back as well as a backside entrance. The Seville orange is awesome and I'm particular when it comes to orange flavoring - I was randomly gifted it for the holidays and tried it with some oat milk and now I'm hooked on it. Quality coffee found here! I had a cup of the dark roast cuban this morning, wow! I also had a slice of the fresh baked pumpkin bread, yum. They have many choices of beans from around the world. There is adequate parking in the rear of the store and on the street. What you won't find are tables and chairs to enjoy your coffee. For that you must sit outside and hope one of the two sidewalk tables are available. read more

This place is dangerous......in a good way. I am working to mature my coffee experience beyond WAWa and 7-11. I'm over Panera and Starbucks as well. Blanchards is good but that's another review. I found this spot by accident while having lunch next door at the Hometeam Grill. I started grinding store bought beans but visited both Rostov and MOJO- Carey Town to get a even fresher product. OMG I was in coffee heaven. I have the Cuban blend, Yirgacheffe and a half pound of Chocolate Kona Macadamia Nut in bean form but they will grind it for you but that's no fun. I just finished up my pumpkin spice . It's nice to walk into a coffee shop and see the roaster churning and large bags of beans. The shop actually smells like coffee! They sell most everything coffee but as expected the prices are elevated. It's a quaint little store that I plan on visiting whenever I'm in Richmond. Knowledgeable and polite staff. read more

I've been getting my coffee at Rostovs since we moved from Georgia to Virginia three years ago. I must share one of the many reasons why I love Rostovs aside from their premium, fresh roasted coffee. I had placed a coffee order to ship intending to order my regular 2lbs which is a $5 shipping fee. I messed up and only ordered 1 lb which is $5 to ship as well. I went back on the website to place a separate order for the other pound I left off which would have been a separate $5 shipping fee. The astute people at Rostovs caught my error, combined the orders and, get this, put a $5 bill in my order to reimburse me for the extra shipping. $5 is just $5 but the attention to detail and thoughtfulness of a seemingly small detail made it a not-so-small detail at all. This place is awesome! We buy the Richmond tea blend which they serve at the Jefferson hotel. They also grind coffee in house that tastes amazing. I had the light coffee and it was really fresh and delicious. Certain hours the coffee is at a discounted rate- I paid 1.00 for a large coffee the other day in the afternoon. Jay Rostov was literally the origin of Richmond's coffee scene in Carytown, in the 70s when -- on the east coast, art least -- asking for an "Iced Venti Caramel Macchiato with sprinkles & skimmed milk" might get you sent to the loony bin. And then, coffee took Richmond like a storm. I became a Rostov's customer in the Carytown location in the 90s, and more recently in the vibrant 1600 block of West Main in the fan. Tammy Rostov, the current proprietress, always has what I'm looking for whether it's a tea strainer, wonderfully aromatic whole beans, or Chemex coffee filters. Chemex coffee filters -- when you can find them, mostly online -- are usually outrageously priced. But at Rostov's Coffee & Tea, a box of 100 costs $8.75, and there are no shipping charges, of course. Street parking can be hit or miss, but I've never had to park more than one block away. The store is very clean, always seductively aromatic, and Tammy is über pleasant and helpful. In the past five years, I've made over 20 trips to Rostov's Coffee & Tea, and plan to continue doing so. read more

I love coming into this place! Everyone has always been so friendly and helpful. I made a special trip today after work to get coffee for my boyfriend for his birthday and I was able to park right outside the door. I was immediately greeted by a staff member and told her I wanted an expensive coffee the boyfriend had requested and I couldn't remember what it was but that it's stored in a gum ball machine like thing. They also have the cutest little trinkets.
