I called Roto-Rooter for an emergency water heater failure at my rental property, which left my tenant without hot water. They confirmed the unit needed to be replaced and quoted over $5,000. I got a second quote but chose Roto-Rooter because they explicitly confirmed multiple times they could install the new water heater the next day, and had me sign a service commitment based on that assurance. The next day, they missed the scheduled install with no proactive communication. When I called at the appointment time, I was told they were backed up and wouldn't make it, pushing the install to the following day. Had I gone with the other plumber, the job would have already been completed. The delay also meant I couldn't be onsite due to travel. When the install finally happened, the technician tried to get my tenant to sign off on the work. She refused, and I was pressured to verbally approve the job site unseen. While they did offer a discount and an extra year of warranty, the quality of work was unacceptable (see images) They cut through original 1900-era redwood siding and left two PVC drain lines stubbed directly through the exterior wall and open to the elements. This was a sloppy shortcut; the lines could have been routed through the crawlspace properly or the pipes could have been drilled and caulked. They also left drywall debris inside the house after cutting through the interior wall. To make matters worse, there was zero coordination on the required inspection weeks later. I received a text Monday morning saying a technician was onsite with inspection paperwork. There was no notice to me or the tenant, which I'm required to give 24hr notice in advance of anything onsite. My tenant was forced to wait all day for an inspector whose arrival time the technician couldn't even estimate. The inspector finally showed up around 4:00 PM and signed off. The only positive is that my tenant has hot water again and the inspection passed. Unfortunately, the cost, missed commitments, poor communication, and careless workmanship far outweigh that outcome. I will not be using Roto-Rooter again. read more

I hired Roto-Rooter to install shut-off valves on two toilets, and it turned into a complete nightmare. As an 81-year-old widow, this experience was especially stressful and difficult to manage. The first technician--who I later learned was new--insisted on removing a wall-mounted toilet to access the valve, even though he had plenty of room to install the shut-off valve fittings without removing the toilet. I expressed concern, but he said he did this all the time. When he removed the toilet, water spilled all over my carpet. He also installed the valve incorrectly (missing a compression fitting), causing leaks. None of this would have happened if the toilet had not been unnecessarily removed. They did try to respond and sent a restoration crew, but after days of drying, the carpet was still soaked--and is now completely ruined. Meanwhile, the newly installed valves continued to leak. A supervisor then incorrectly claimed the issue was inside the walls and suggested cutting into the drywall, but my son confirmed the problem was simply the faulty valve installation. After I discovered more flooding, I had to shut the water off to my entire house for five days. Removing the toilet had damaged the wax ring and tank seal, creating additional leaks. A second technician attempted repairs--installing a new shut-off valve with a compression fitting, a new fill valve, seal, and wax ring--but the work was still sloppy. The water supply hoses to the shut-off valve were left loose and leaking, and soon after, the tank bolts began leaking as well. Communication was inconsistent throughout. Although they initially tried to help, the repeated mistakes and unnecessary work made the situation worse. Although they refunded the $405 charge, that does not cover the damage or replace my 5-year-old carpet, which is now ruined, or the stress of dealing with repeated issues. I ultimately had to hire a qualified, experienced plumber to fix Roto-Rooter's mistakes. I recommend hiring a qualified, experienced plumber instead. read more

My god! Sergio was the plumber who came to my house. We called late and we was at my house from 6:30pm to 10:30pm fixing a bad leak. The 3 hours was not because he wasn't good, it was because he was absolutely amazing and worked on two toilets to make sure my family and I didn't have to worry about water leakage and damage. He was very kind. 10/10 would recommend Roto-Rooter! Most companies would be closed or tell you to call back in the morning, but Roto-Rooter was there for us when we needed help. read more

Outrageously expensive $$$$$ I wish this was a joke but is not. Wanted to charge $1300 + to clear a backed up toilet. Our usual plumber did it for $180. Based on cost estimate alone- 1 star. But I got after hours (hence why I called this company) and he came quick and was very nice hence extra star). I was also charged $79 just for him to come out which I didn't fully understand that he did absolutely nothing for $79. There is no one who should use this to company unless they are having the absolute worst plumbing emergency and their house is flooding. It's a total rip off. read more

The technician was nice, hence the two stars. Unfortunately, he had no idea what he was doing. Usually I'd call my plumber from Ventura to come up, because he's STILL reasonably priced, even with travel expenses, but it was 3pm so we called this "Emergency plumber" they charged $285 to come out and snake a drain, couldn't clear it, said there was likely a break in the line and it would be $7000++ to fix, but they could come back tomorrow and try to Hydrojet it for closer to $1000 (on top of the $285 already paid) The next day I spoke with my regular plumber and sent him a photo, he said "It's a French drain. There IS no line to hydrojet or replace," and noted that running a snake down it probably damaged it further. Just from the PHOTO. I called Roto Rooter to tell them this. They offered a 5% refund. They way over charged me Their quote was crazy.They wanted to do a lot of work for huge amount of money! I needed a waterline to go from my washer to outside and the estimate was over $3,000.and a $155 for the estimate. I wouldn't hire them if they were the best plumber on earth!. Don't waste your time getting ripped off. An estimate for Gas hookups for my dryer was over $6,000.00. He wanted to remove my water heater to do it. There was a gas line on the outside of my garage door I didn't need that done. He wouldn't even look me in the eye when he talked to me. He had a helper namedRickey! Who was a very nice young man. Although initially responsive to a plugged drain line we ended up with a very expensive fix. We were told their hourly rate was $ 460 / hr after the work was completed. What should have been an easy fix turned into an expensive lesson. They turned a 4 hr job into a multiday nightmare! They routinely misled us and their workmanship was average at best. This story keeps getting worse. Johnny, the plumber did a reasonable job. He seems like he did his job as best he could, though the one issue I have is that he did not quickly determine my toilet should be replaced and stop service to keep the bill down. Instead he sort of led me down a rabbit hole. Dave, Johnny's Supervisor answered my call initially, accepted that the service was not exactly completed as it should have been and offered me a refund. Great! ... except I have yet to see any refund in my account now after 12 days. Mike, Dave's Manager initially took my call and complaint and helped me get in touch with Dave when he was not answering his phone. This is what led to the refund. Now, the refund has not arrived, and NOBODY is answering phones. So I am stuck dialing the poor admins who are having to deal with my dissatisfaction, though it has nothing to do with them. Ultimately, the issue here is a lack of integrity or even caring about doing their jobs well and caring for people. I asked for a description of the service performed, where Dave wrote down that it is "likely a mineral buildup". This is really frustrating. It is a 3 year old toilet! I told you a make-up bag fell in and something was flushed. Either get it out, or tell me that your cost to get it out is more than a new toilet and I can replace my toilet myself. Period. I was on hold trying to reach Dave while venting here. Dave just got back to me assuring me my refund, plus the remaining $250 refunded as well. This would be the best possible ending at this point, where the only $ cost incurred is the replacement of my toilet. The other cost (which is significant) is my time spent chasing this down and helping these folks to do the right thing. I am told I will receive a call before 9am tomorrow with the refund processing. I shamefully admit that Roto-Rooter wasn't my first call because I mistakenly thought they'd be super expensive. THEY WEREN'T! We, of course, had our emergency on the weekend and they were the only company that had enough people to come help us and they were SO NICE! Richard was our technician and he was SO professional and friendly it was actually a great experience to have him! And he figured out the problem in this crazy old house of ours! I got a call from the company a day after leaving the prior review. The manager had let me know that they have suspended that plumber. He told me he has to work with corporate moving forward. They called me do days later to let me know that that plumber has been let go. I did a little research and they in fact let him go. I also found out that the company had a meeting and new protocalls were put in place. I'm leaving three stars because I only got a phone call after leaving the prior review instead of the manager giving me a call back when I called the day of the incident and requesting them giving me a call. read more

We had to have some extensive drain repair after several other plumbers were not able to address the issue. Brandon Lopez, from Roto Rooter was the lead tech who first responded. While this was a team effort on multiple days, including his supervisor, Sergio, Brandon hung with the project into the weekend and again, with Sergio, also stopped in on Sunday to make sure the repairs were solid. Called them out when our toilets wouldn't flush. Had tried other companies but only got answering machines. Had a tech by the name of Luis come out who was easy to talk to and knew what he was doing. Attitude was great for coming out on a Sunday night. I asked about overtime and he said it was his normal scheduled time. He had us up and running in just over an hour. Gave us pros and cons of what he found and left us with some options if problems persisted in the future. Over all a good experience. Would call them again if needed. read more

Encountered a stopped up toilet on a Sunday at my mom's. My go to plumber was not available so hello 'Plan B' which was calling Roto-Rooter. They are 24/7! Got scheduled in right away and 30min later Teodoro drove up and gave an estimate and got underway with the snaking. Well of course Murphy's law kicked in and we ended up requiring to snake thru the roof clean out. After speaking with Supervisor Ruben who listen to & addressed my concerns with pricing, we came to a mutual deal as a 2nd tech was sent to our location, Joel, to assist on the roof. I had a likely pretty basic slow draining toilet ground floor that had some gurgling noise. I thought just in case I needed to rooter the main sewer outlet (who knows, tree roots), I'd try one of the rooter type plumbers. They responded to my Yelp project and I forgot to confirm the star ratings first. I did call and book an appointment. Lady was cordial and said they offered free estimates, no obligation, so that felt good. I asked how they bill, and if their are minimums, and after asking a few different ways, they would provide no detail whatsoever about cost. I was told I would get a notification text when they were on their way, and I had to confirm it; otherwise, they would not show up. I said I am confirming now, as that is why I am making this reservation, and I might be in a meeting and miss the text. That for some reason seemed difficult for them to manage, so I had to repeat again, that I am giving pre-approval I will be there, so just show up please. This was not an urgent fix, but I went ahead assuming it would be likely reasonable. Guy showed up on time, and then hit me with $350 minimum to rooter only 6 ft at toilet, and if that did not fix it and had to use my sewer clean out, then it would cost more. Not a good experience, so I said given the pricing and no guarentee of results, it was too much. They then renegotiated down to $198 for same detail of what they would do. I am a person of integrity, and this felt like opposite of that. Based on this experience and that this was not an urgent job, I said no thank you, and hired someone else. read more
