The lobsters and steamers were delicious - twin 1 1/4 hard shell lobsters, steamers and corn was about $52.00 - a very fair price. I highly recommend this place and will definately go back when I'm in the area next. Delicious as always! The staff is so nice and so are the fishermen using the pier. Prices have not changed as much as many other places and is still a great deal! About $60 for a single lobster dinner and a double lobster dinner including corn, a bag of clams, and chips with each. Extra bags of clams are $8 too and they're some of the cleanest and best tasting clams around. The place was very popular with tables hard to come by on a Monday July night. Many more tourists and out-of-state license plates than when we last visited, but still seems popular with locals like us too. read more

We have been coming to this spot for eight years now and it is always amazing! It is with mixed feelings I write this review.... It is small and already crowded! :-) This is a lobster shack. You want lobster? That is what you get. Lobster is fresh and as a side you can get corn on the cob, mussels, clams, and/or chips. I pretty much that is it and that is exactly enough. The people are nice, the vibe is very cool, and we have been here at least 30 times over the years and I can't remember one time we didn't get to talking to people at other tables and having a great time. BYOB and BYOD (dog!) too! The only potential negative would be that there are only a small number of tables, but I think that is a positive and I enjoy it. Not crowded, good food, and very, very, chill. No frills except for the paper towels at the table. Enjoy it! read more

We were here in 2013 and now back in 2019!! This is my favorite place in Maine to eat lobster!! This is a true lobster pound! Good chance what you eat at night came in from the ocean the same morning! The soft shell 1 lb and 1/4 lobsters are so sweet and delicious! What can I say, Round Pond lobster is the best for lobsters in the rough, we pack our beer & wine as well as a salad and head here for lobby's and clams. The steamers are the best locally as Buddy buys the best and soaks them free of grit and mud. This is no small feat, especially when you go to competitors and crunch on muddy steamers most of the time. I appreciate the large inventory of different sizes of lobsters as this is not a one size fits all. Everyone loves to pick their own. read more

Having lived on/off in the New England area for more than 2 decades we're spoiled by having access to some wonderful nearby, reasonably priced clam shacks, lobster pounds, etc. Also, during peak season lobster is available (live or steamed to order) very reasonably priced from many surrounding grocery stores. Covid has changed a lot, but before leaving for Maine we'd heard that lobster rolls there were going for upwards of $30. Yep, true. This past wknd our close family friend played host, tourguide and chauffeur showing us his old haunts. After awhile it was clear "someone" needed food. We pulled over to an area w/ which he had some familiarity and there were 3-4 choices. In the end: we didn't want fried seafood or fries, we didn't want crowds, we didn't want screaming free-range children and we didn't want to pay for the overhead to properly run a big operation. RPLC (a 1-man operation) had lobsters (soft shell, hard shell and jumbos) and steamers. They have bagged chips and some other things, but we were here for lobster. We ordered and were told it'd be 20 minutes. We left to visit the area shops and by the time we returned we had to wait an add'l 45 seconds. (I set my watch early: my bad.) We ordered a 2+lb (hardshell, wooden mallet available) for 2 and 1 softshell chick for 1. Both were glorious. We had a great view of the harbor and were able to enjoy each other's conversation and company. We screwed up by not thinking to bring adult beverages. BYOB: yeah! The price was very civilized because it has a limited menu and a simple, basic location. There is a station to wash your hands (repeatedly, in my case) and be sure to put away your plates, reusable tools and trash in the appropriate receptacles. If you're in the mood for lobster and little else, these guys rock. If you're with a group and they want all the options (clams, oysters, fries, etc.), but you want lobster, let them go across the way and meet them later. You'll be grateful you did. read more

I never knew there was a hard & soft boil. Being from Maryland where crabs are the staple, I know how much goes into opening them. These were easy peasy to get into! I've been eating at Round Pond Lobster since they opened decades ago. Hands down the best place to eat lobster and clams on the planet earth. Picturesque view of lobster boats, sail boats and a Maine rock lined pine tree lined protected harbor. The best value, great service, fresh lobster and incredible Damariscotta River clams. Get the summer shedders if you can they are so sweet they don't even need the butter. If you are in San Diego this is seriously not too far to drive, it is that good. read more

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how 2 lobsters, a basket of steamer clams and an ear of corn can be $24. I arrived here for lunch on a foggy afternoon and no one was eating here, literally no one. I'll admit, I was a little worried. I walked up to the little white shack and the two pretty, young ladies assured me they were open. I told them it was my first time in Maine and they immediately suggested I get the 2 lobster platter. At first I thought they were trying to scam an out of towner but after seeing the prices, and the size of the lobsters, I didn't argue. They asked if I wanted "hard" or "soft" but being from Chicago, I had never had soft shell lobsters before and didn't know which to pick. They suggested I get both to compare and contrast. They did mention that locals always go for the hard shell. The hard was a $2 upcharge but well worth it, as I later found out. I sat down at one of the many picnic tables by the water and 30 minutes later, a glorious platter of two lobsters(more than a lbs each), a ton of clams, ear of corn and a cup butter was put in front of my face. The girl who brought it out suggested I wait a minute because the lobsters were just out of the steamer and too hot to handle. That wasn't a problem because I needed a few minutes to wrap my brain around what was in front of my face. I'll admit, I felt a little self conscious at first. Eating that much food in one sitting seemed excessive. But once the girls told me visitors do it all the time, all the worrying went with the tide and starting crackin'! While the soft shell lobster was far easier to crack open, there was less meat in the claws and a little more water. The meat was also less sweet. The girls had mentioned this fact beforehand so I wasn't surprised. The hardshell is the way to go, even with the upcharge. The meat was far sweeter and there was more claw/knuckle meat. The clams were steamed a little too long but obviously fresh. And there were so much of them that I didn't finish. I can't justify taking off a star for that, it was a minor quibble. There were people going to the opposite side of the parking lot to eat but I can't imagine anything better or cheaper than this co-op. If you are ever out this way, this is highly highly highly recommended! It is a bit out of the way but after driving around the coast of Maine, I learned that the good stuff is worth the extra work. read more

Muscongus Bay Lobster Company gets all the attention when talking lobster at Round Pond, but the other lobster place to go to is the Co-op and it is great. I have been here multiple times over the years and they are always friendly. The lobsters are always always fresh. We had them cook them up for us and they were cooked perfectly. My husband and I came here after reading the reviews. We drove all the way from where we were staying in Portland. It was definitely worth the drive. We had a twin lobster meal without the steamers since we don't like then and paid around $22. Mind you this was 2 hard shell lobsters, 2 corn and potato chips. My wife and I have eating here many times in the past. Each time the food was good the view was very good this service could use a little more polish. All said and done what can be said about lobster other then Yum Yum. The prices are not too too bad. So we're giving it four out of five stars. We came in from Florida and had lunch at Shaws down the road. We're not very impressed. But we came to this place and wow did we have a lot of fun and the lobsters and steamers were great. Best price in the area! Very rustic and the prices and the taste knock it out of the park! read more

I stayed in the Round Pond area for 5 days and ate here for four of the days - it is so good. There is no shelter during rain, so we got the lobsters to go when we couldn't eat at the picnic tables. My other friends preferred the nearby Muscongus Pound so my friend and I would order our lobsters from Round Pond and walk the trays over to Muscongus. We got the $22 single lobster meal (the double is $30+) - a 1 1/4 pounder with 1/2 lb steamers, a bag of chips and corn on the first night, and realized that we didn't need the corn or the chips (we were there in July and corn wasn't quite in season yet), so we stopped ordering that meal. For less than $20, I got 2 soft shell quarter/half pounders and a pound of clams, which is a great deal. I always get soft shells in Maine since the meat is sweeter and not available outside of the state due to their inability to survive shipping. The lobsters were much saltier than the ones at Muscongus, the clams were about the same in quality. You can request broth when you order. The lobsters were so delicious and fresh that the butter was unnecessary. My only wish is that they stayed open later - last order at 7 pm. read more

My husband and I have been coming to Round Ponds Lobster for 18 years. You will not find a prettier view for dockside dining in all of Midcoast Maine. The steamers are the cleanest I've ever had. Prices are competitive. For example, for a Twin Shore dinner (two lobsters, a pound of steamers, corn on the cob, a bag of chips) the price this season was $22. The other lobster place right across the parking lot was $32. Buddy and his crew are friendly and will happily let you borrow a bottle opener for your byob bottle of wine.
