Tonight we had a shared plate of the Charcuterie Board. Great variety of local meats and cheese. It had aged cheese, goat blue cheese, chirozo, pruscuto and olive campanide and crackers. We were looking for a no-nonsense good meal after a day of hiking in the Sooke are. Route 14 Sooke was the perfect place for us. Great service, good beer, and a covid-respectful place. Had the calamari (a bit over-fried, but OK_, and an order of chicken club and 1/2 rack baby back ribs ... Ribs could have had more sauce, but were tasty, and my partner told me club was very good. We had a great meal and beverages on the patio at Route 14 to day. Fish and chips was anything but the average. So crispy on the outside and fresh tasting in the inside! The hit at the table though was the Brussels Sprout salad!!! Best salad ever according to the person consuming it to the last morsel! Great enthusiastic service in a nice pub/restaurant setting. Food came in a timely manner and our waitress was helpful and knowledgeable for first time visitors to the area. Wow what an amazing place. I write this review from an IPA and carnivore lover point of view. Server informed us that dishes were made from scratch. Of course I acknowledged with some skepticism. Ordered IPA beer, mussels, chicken burger, and 1pc fish and Kennebec chips. Mussels knocked us out of our socks. Perfectly cooked, delicious sauce, tasty chorizo. Fish and chips were better than what I tasted in London. Coleslaw was not creamy, but deliciously prepared. Chicken burger was moist and tasty. We walked right in around 6pm on a Saturday night. Whoops! Clearly I had an atypical experience here at Route 14. Food was just ok. We asked if we could get cheddar instead of American cheese on the burger - waitress said, "Well, it's the orange stuff so basically it's cheddar".... Um, American cheese isn't even real cheese in my book, even if it is orange. Regardless of the cheese, burger was pretty overcooked, garlic toast didn't even have a hint of garlic flavor and was very oily, smoked salmon chowder had *maybe* an ounce of smoked salmon and the rest of it was a watery broth with a few chunks of potato. If Guy Fieri had to pick a place to showcase on Vancouver Island, I would nominate Route 14 to highlight on his Diner-Drive-In and Dive show. For a small neighborhood bar, the food was outstanding, the setting was casual and comfortable, and service was attentive. Mussels cooked in coconut sauce with chorizo were delicious. Crab cakes were great. Loved the Caesar salad. Sadly, we arrived too early for dinner service, which begins at 5pm. Great place to hang out and check out the local vibe, grab local beer and watch some sports on the large screens. read more

Wow. Not what I expected. I was ready for a beer and some pub food. After a few minutes with the menu I was all over a starter of crab & prawn croquettes and an Ahi tuna salade Niçoise. (Not the typical biker road trip food, to be sure.) Just awesome. Every part of both dishes was spot on, and the staff was attentive and friendly, as well as eager for feedback. We had a great meal tonight on our vacation in Sooke. After splurging at Harbour House last night, we were aiming for sushi tonight but on a whim, we changed our plans and headed across the street to Route 14. We started with the poutine starter; it was my first poutine in Canada. I loved it, and some in our party who had spent more time in Canada said that it was pretty freaking good. For our entrees, we had crab cakes, yellow curry, and two salads. Everything was delicious and fresh (even the salads, which isn't often the case at a place that promotes its fish and chips so heavily). The service was quick and polite. We'd go back! read more

We ended up here as a random choice having parked across the street intending to do sushi. It was a good choice. There was a little bit of a wait getting in, but it wasn't too long at all. The service was fantastic and the food was outstanding, especially for the price point. I highly recommend their poutine and their caesar salad was fantastic (which is a phrase I don't often use about a salad). A great roadhouse grill. All wood interior, blues played and even with lockdown they're were friendly and courteous. Our server newly arrived from Ontario was great as was the reuben, chicken clubhouse sandwiches. I would give 4 stars for our waitress, Merinda, as her effort to fix the problem was appreciated. This was the second time to dine there. The first time I ordered Route 14 greek salad with grilled chicken and my husband got poutine. The salad was fresh, zesty and lemony as promised and described in the menu plus the ingredients were great along with the portion. The poutine was also very good and a filling portion too. Today it was so disappointing for both orders!!! I repeated the salad since it was so good last time but I got instead a very small bowl with lots of wilted yellow greens!!! There was almost no couscous either and the whole bowl was so surprising to be served this way. The feta cheese was mushed with the greens and it was not appetizing at all. When I communicated this with our waitress, she tried to help and confirmed that this should be solved. She brought us the owner (manager was not there) to discuss in detail as the the service was so stressed on Saturday evening with little time given to service at the tables. To our surprise, the owner told me "if you order a greek salad and you take out everything from it, there's nothing left"!!! With a try for a better food serving, the result was not different but rather worse with lesser portion, and yellow wilted greens, and the owner did not even come to check if it was better. As mentioned earlier, I ordered the same exact bowl before and it was totally different, I ask to take away couple ingredients for allergies and sub with the vegetables that are already in the salad which is no problem. Regardless, this time the quality of ingredients was so low, service was so rushed and the owner was not welcoming at all. As for my husband's poutine, the portion was also much smaller than earlier. I wish there was better hospitality. If we were not hungry, we would have definitely left. read more
