It is very unusual for me to write a review but we are so disappointed by the recent changes. We have been customers for years and loved that the food was always so good and consistent. The last few times were incredibly disappointing. We decided to give it a try tonight hoping they had improved but it was awful. They boneless wings are now thighs and the breading is the WORST! The Waldorf salad used to be so good and loaded with toppings but now it's sad and basically just lettuce. We won't be ordering from Tartan Toque again. The only thing that hasn't changed are the friendly staff. I hope the new owners read the reviews, take the feedback and make some changes. read more

There are many local restaurants that have done an amazing job navigating the Covid-19 pandemic. This isn't one of them. There's a token tiny piece of plexiglass, but none of the staff wore masks or respected physical distance. The place had an aura of grime that would have raised eyebrows pre-pandemic of deadly killer bat virus. I feel like I need a two week quarantine. More importantly, if you thought a prerequisite of running a chicken wing restaurant would be the ability to make good wings, you'd be wrong. This place subscribes to a level of fowl desiccation that would only be acceptable at an airport bar. At 2 am. Wow - Almost entire menu is Gluten Free!! I live in Hawaii and visiting Victoria with my wife and kids. My youngest is Celiac and normally struggles finding good options especially at a pub! The kids wanted wings and found this great gluten friendly place. 95% of the wings on their menu are gluten free and they offer a variety of g-fee dipping sauces. Great place for wings! They have so many classic and unique flavours including, Teriyaki, Honey Garlic, Buffolo Blue, Maple Chipotle, Peanut Satay, Thai, etc. I love their tin buckets for chucking your wings into. Sooo yummy I'm a veggie so finding a place with veggie wings is really a gamble but this place hit it out of the park! They have SO many sauces I couldn't believe it and you can get them on pretty much anything! I got a half order (4 tofu wings) of the jerk & the buffalo blue. Perfectly crispy , Super saucy (if you like less or more there's an option for that!) and just really damn tasty! I also got an order of the "saucy fries" tossed in the creamy dill sauce ! Went like peas and carrots with my buffalo blue wings ! Really great area and a very open "pub vibes" which is comforting and nice for any occasion they also have board games if your feeling fun! Awesome wings! My sister and I shared taco dry rub, maple chipotle, peanut satay and smoked mustard and an overflowing basket of fries. They cook the wings at just the right temperature so they're hot and not greasy. Thoroughly enjoyable - and great staff, too! read more

We went in a Friday for lunch. Being from Buffalo I wasn't going to order wings there, but then I saw they have won "best of" wings in Victoria 5 years running. I got Chipotle Maple sauce, a cod sandwich, and an amazing Phillip's Ginger Beer. My partner got a burger, Poutine, and an IPA. It was stellar. The food came out quicker than I can ever remember getting an order, and everything was stellar. I like their "make yourself at home, pick a seat, and order at the bar" format, and their staff is friendly and efficient. We enjoyed it so much that we came back today. This time I got the buffalo blue wings (delish!) and a salmon burger. It did not disappoint. Service was equally efficient, pleasant, and fast. Other restaurants could l arm a thing or two from them. So my rating is as bad as you get this time. Before the nice lady who worked out front by herself left( Jasmine (?) Perhaps) left, My orders were really for the most part.. if anything..once in awhile the fries would be too overcooked..so she said no problem.. we'll just replace them next time you're over this way. Since she left and I'm guessing the chef changed as well, maybe, when I've asked for LIGHTLY CRISP FRIES...they are closer to almost burnt and not edible at all!il now I didnt say anything but was not only clearly on my receipt appropriately but also that ghad salt added( asked for no added salt) and the salt and paper wings no no flavor that they should have and the bbq were " overly " bbq sauces! None had ever been done there till now. I called in and was offered not only replacement of all but ALSO a Refund or a Gift card for the full order. I said at this point it wasnt necessary to refill the order as I was too far away.. I said I wasn't really sure right now but I guess a GC for now. There was no explanation of what would constitute a refund and what would warrant Giftcard , that I couldnt change. I asked if I need to keep the food and was told I could do whatever i wanted with it.. I called a couple of days later to ask if I could changei it to a refund as really not happy ( had initially said I had picked of fries to send.. not required).was told the financial manager had to take care of it( Tristan) and hed be in at 4 that day and call me.. heard nothing. I waited 2 days for a call and called again . Left another message. Got a Ontario cell number ( so I didn't answer, thinking spammers).. they left no message...he didnt want to play phone tag apparently. I find it really unprofessional to not leave a mess by someone for a business call let alone bothersome in general. You could leave 2-3 x youd be available on your next days of works,etc.for a callback.. He was extremely rude and yelled at me.. put down his staff several times and so no to the refund as due to poor quality of food its only a GIFTCARD.. He didnt listen to even know.. service, quality, I don't appreciate getting yelled at and especially not having an opportunity to speak.. In the end.no choice.. according to this Manager of sorts.. to the GC. He also said I didn't ask for a Supervisor/ Manager initially.. ( I did.. and was put thru to a lady). He said she wasnt one? He also accused me of yelling at his staff which is interesting since they said they couldnt hear me. I had let them know I had an issue with my phone..so when they didn't hear I spoke louder , however I did not tell. I used to go in and just refer people, even strangers there.. NO MORE! Zoe, Erin(?) and Tristan all had several chances to fix this ...even though according to Trist Zoe a Erin don't.. ( the things he said about his own employees to not only put them down is not int demeaning and archaic...but I would never work for someone who said those things and puts employees down so bad..especially to customers. Really great wings, good place to sit down for a beer. But man one of the people working in the front seemed totally high on something. He was all over the place, and kept screaming at his fellow employees (except one which i'm assuming was his girlfriend since he grabbed her ass) which was really unprofessional. I think this place should be awesome, but it kind of isn't. Like, to be up-front: the whole premise of their food is that they're wacky, innovative, special, and flavourful. This is the sort of place that should be defined by the food maybe being slightly sort of trashy, but flavourful. Like a lot of such restaurants, though, they aim for that and end up just being really good at frying things, but not at imparting or developing flavour. The wings are not the cheapest in town, but are pretty affordable. They're fried really, really well. They offer a wide range of sauces and powdered flavourings, and all of them are unremarkable, bland, thin. Nothing is fully developed; you'd need to combine, like, four of them, and then add a bunch of salt or butter at your own table, maybe, before you'd have something really worthwhile. It's nice that they have fried tofu as an option alongside their wings, which is a great way to share the wing experience with a vegetarian, but only if you don't care particularly much about it being a good wing experience. Their hottest sauce is just, like, cayenne powder added to their buffalo sauce. I'm not sure if they know what they're doing? Doing that doesn't make it hotter, it just makes it worse. Mixing a small amount of a really hot hot sauce (and Greater Victoria has no shortage of places with great selections, like the Market on Millstream) into a butter-buffalo sauce would give a much better extra hot result. Actually, butter and more salt would go a long way with most of their wing options. The dry taco stuff just, like, it doesn't taste like anything due to inadequate seasoning. It's like eating dirt, except dirt is a lot saltier, a lot more flavourful. "Hey, I'm eating some dark powder on this wing. Hoo-wee, I am having a fine time. This sure is a wing that exists!" The poutine is sort of meh due to gravy from a similar flavour-free, poorly-textured universe. I love these guys, I love the place, I love the idea of it so much, and the food repeatedly falls short. read more

When I wrote my first review of this place I was mostly excited to have a good pub type restaurant in my neighborhood. Well, now everyone has discovered the place and I don't have to say how cheap they are or how many different options they have for a "wing joint". I will say they're still great and if something doesn't work out for you (like a couple reviewers here) USE YOUR WORDS and they'll fix it for you. Brad might look a little scary but he's lovely! I really wanted to like this place. I had been wanting to go for a while and now that I finally have I kind of regret it. The location and look of this little place are actually quite cool. I walk everywhere and this is only about a 20 minute walk from the market on yates area. The look is very intentionally "unkept" in a good way. I liked the feel but it wasn't the most practical. You seat yourself and then have to go back to the front to order. The booths are not very forgiving if you are with someone who is a bit larger as they don't allow for much room, I didn't find it to be an issue but some might. The issue I have with the ordering at the counter is you also have to pay and Tip before you get your food. I don't mind paying before the food comes but I don't agree with tipping before I have received my food/service. I always tip low in these cases and just wait till after to leave some more cash on the table for the staff but sadly I did not this time due to the poor service and awful food. What we ordered and how we felt about it: Cajun boneless wings with garlic dip. The chicken was flat (nothing like you'd expect a "wing" to look) and very dry/overcooked. The flavour was an overpowering burnt spice only made tolerable with large amounts of dip. Creamy dill Boneless wings. Again same flat overcooked chicken. the sauce was tasteless, almost like you just put unsweetened whip cream on it and it also came with chunks of pickles on it. Not enjoyable at all tasted like soggy, breaded, overcooked chicken. Loaded fries. Not bad, the fries themselves are pretty good, crispy and yummy. the toppings sounded delish but ended up pretty bland and lackluster. The staff was closed off and didn't seem to want to be there thus making the overall experience unenjoyable. We did not finish our food and will not be returning to try other menu items. read more

SInce switching to keto my restaurant options are a bit more limited, but not here. If you're eating low carb or avoiding gluten, this is the place for you. We eat here almost every week and some weeks will see us here a couple of times. It is that good. For a large family it is nice to be able to find something that each person likes and where you get great value for money. read more

Good neighborhood restaurant but food is just ok not great. And I've been pretty disappointed with the wings as they claim to be the best in Victoria. In my opinion they've been small and overcooked but not in a good crispy way. For my dollar I prefer Christie's wings if you're in the neighborhood. Plus it costs extra for celery and blue cheese at the Toque. Their burgers are pretty good too but half the time they are also overcooked. My favorite is fries with their Chipotle mayo. read more

If you don't know this place is here it's easy to miss. Don't miss it! I always thought it was a pub but discovered it in my ongoing search for the best eings in victoria. So it is an easy walk from home. We wandered down to check it out. Order at the bar on your way in and clear your own dished. Ok. I ordered a full order of green coconut curry wings and a half order of inferno with a small fries and a pint of Blue Buck. The curry coconut wings were ok. Not a favorite. Luckily they have 18 more flavors for me to work my way through. The wings are meaty. Maybe a little overcooked. The curry was mediocre maybe even a little bland. The shredded coconut was sweet and seemed odd on wings to me. The inferno wings were hot. Maybe the hottest I have had here in victoria yet. I'm glad I opted for a half order. The tasted a lot like Franks Red Hot maybe with some added peppers to boost the heat. They were good. The fries were great. The beer ice cold. I will be trying this place again soon. I want to try the garlic wings and the candied bacon wings next. read more

We ate dinner here when we wanted to find an eatery within walking distance while staying in Victoria BC for vacation. We ordered the Creamy Dill chicken wings, the chili dog, a hot dog, and fries. The food was well-prepared with great flavor. It was a fun sports/games atmosphere with a friendly staff. The food was very good. The hottest new restaurant In Victoria is The Tartan Toque - Victoria's first wing joint. It might seem odd that a Vegan is eating at a wing joint. However, The Tartan Toque was started by the owner and a chef from the very popular brunch spot The Shine Cafe; which has some of the best vegan brunch options I have encountered. The buzz around town is the joint is inspired by UK pub culture, it has bar service. We knew before hand , we were entertained at the confusion on patrons sitting in the very UK pub booths (uncomfortable , but endearing) and waiting for table service, because they missed the intro when walking in. My husband is from the UK, and we have many friends from there, I have heard about bar service and how much more efficient it is. However, many of the customers developed in one giant cluster of confusion at the bar, even after they were told. My first outing to The Tartan Toque, I went with a meat eater who was ready to try 1 of 20 choices of wings. I, decided to try their tofu fingers, I was intrigued with curiosity. TOFU FINGERS? Tofu fingers are breaded with cornmeal, and one has the choice of the same 20 choices as the wings. I went with Maple Tofu Fingers ($7.00) and the Onion Nest side. Service was quick, and it was super busy. My tofu fingers were good, crispy and flavourful. I couldn't eat the whole plate, definitely didn't need the side, the fingers themselves are all you need, or maybe they could offer 1/2 the fingers with a side, after awhile you start to feel like you are just eating flavored tofu, they start to lose their pep. I since then have tried the veggie burger, ($5.00) which the price is right, however the burger tends to fall apart and becomes difficult to eat. My last outing to The Tartan Toque was not such a pleasant one, I can only assume after some scrutiny of bar service, they decided to give table service a go. I came in that night to order some take out, and waited a very long time to have someone even talk to me. i was kind of in a rush, I was on a food run during the hockey game, and since it is close to my house I just drove up there and was going to place the order. The prices have gone up since it's opened, and that evening I ended up walking out after 5 minutes of no one paying attention to me. Very disappointed, but everyone has a bad day. I decided to check this place out as I go to Origin Gluten Free Bakery now and again and always see it. When I went in I noticed that they won the most recent Times Columnist award for best wings in the city. Well that needed to be tested. I didn't have a tonne of time so I ordered a pound of their Honey Garlic Wings. SO NOT DISAPPOINTED! They were perfectly crisp on the outside, moist and juicy on the inside, dripping in wonderful honey and the garlic part was fresh real chunks of garlic! HEAVEN IN MOUTH! Also to be noted for all you no gluten people out there, since they are a few doors down from Origin . . . . almost everything is GLUTEN-FREE! Enjoy like I did. read more

What happened to this place?! The past 4 times I have went to this place was a complete let down! Why did i go back? Because after boycotting it 2 times, I thought they would clean up. The Boneless wings were consistently overcooked and disgusting. One time they had put mountains of garlic on it, so i had to throw them out. Two of my coworkers have had horrible food there, and they will never return either. This place has let us down too many times. And was told it's already paid for so they didn't want to take the time.there was getting to be a line up.i don't know why. They only served draft I wanted something different they said they only had draft I could see some kalua and Bailey's I guess they where just coffee drinks wasn't even explained . The noise from people talking sounded like 200 people but there was only about 20 people where hammered I looked at a table of 5 and all 5 where talking at the same time very loud. The coleslaw was not chopped up much big peices being someone with dentures this wasn't good I guess maybe they to lazy to cut them up and the vegetables go farther cut big. My burger fell apart all in pieces the bottom of the bun was about a quarter inch.the meat tasted off and the onions where big pieces an only a couple pieces. The French fries were so salty I couldn't eat them they burnt my throut. There was a line up and the waiter came and grabbed my plates and never asked me if I was done.i was so pissed off I just left or I would have peeked. And the price was very high. I would never go back there. I don't really like McDonald's but it would have been a quarter the price and I wouldn't have been disappointed because I would have known what I got. read more

Very disappointing..... We have a regular chicken wing night every week so when I heard about the tartan toque we were excited. 4 of us ordered a few different flavors- jerk, thai, coconut, chipotle maple and candied bacon, when we received the wings you could tell they had no meat on them. So tiny wings that looked like just fried skin and out of the sauces we tried none were very good with the strangest being the coconut that didn't actually taste like coconut at all. The sauces in general were just lackluster. We ended up going to our usual wing place after leaving because we were all still hungry (the wings there were delicious as usual.) Good for a quick meal. Pretty inexpensive. A fast food joint basically with better burgers than McDonald's. I would suggest it to friends. I like that they give you sauce choices and if you choose to sit in there is beer. I don't like beer but I like the idea of beer. I kinda wish they had a few more healthy options and wine but beggars can't be choosers and for the style they are going for they do a good job. Not so much a complaint but a suggestion. read more
