Waiting for more than 20 minutes for the server to talk about her life to other customers is something I didn't have in mind. This place got style and attitude, including its signature set up of gears on the wall that are belted together and move. The front room is smallish, but there's a large room in the book with stage--a lot of music happens here. Had studied the menu and was going to eat here, but got invited elsewhere. Unbelievably poor service. Waitress did not set us up with utensils or condements,had to ask for more water,which we needed after waiting 35 minutes for our food(we were the only ones ordering at the time) After asking about our order our waitress left for the bank with out any follow up. I would recommend this place as some where to go for drinks and hang out, but definitely not for a meal unless you have an hour wait to receive your food( I was keepingtrackof time). Don't get me wrong with the menu, it was tasty what we order, but how long does it really take to get soup (already made) or chicken salad over lettuce?. Great atmosphere, super friendly bartender. 2 of my group got the home made potatoe salad and raves about it. I got the adult grilled cheese (with spinach and artichoke dip on it- which I have never seen before) and it was amazing. My dad got the beer cheese and bacon tator tots and really liked them. My husband got the pastrami burger and said it had great flavor and was very filling. Would definitely stop there again. read more

Stopped in for lunch just after noon. We were the only two customers in the restaurant. We ordered a hamburger, a meatball sandwich and a beer. The order took over 40 minutes. Unfortunately, the burger was cooked very well done, dry and crumbling. When the Kitchen Manager/Bartender was made aware of the issue, he made light of it saying that was how he liked his hamburgers. Never again, Route 30. Boo! The lady who is charge of the establishment was extremely rude when I was trying to order a beer with my food order. I simply asked the alcohol content of a hazy ipa. The person "in charge" grabbed the phone from the order taker and was short with me. Said they don't do that here. Then also would not be willing sell me a beer to go without a growler but could sell me a cocktail to go. Could not just put it in a cup. What's the difference. I feel sorry for the staff. The lady is short, unwilling to help the customer in a pleasant way, and unwilling to be flexible on a beer to go. Thumbs down read more

Unfortunately my review update is not to praise Route 30 - quite the opposite. Popped in here one evening after work last week and it was not a real enjoyable experience. There were at least 4 people working (I think they were about to have a private event in their back space) so they were certainly staffed well. However, the lady working behind the bar was less than pleasant. She seemed almost bothered that we had questions. For instance, the menu on the table said it was the menu thru Dec 17th (or maybe it said 18th, it's irrelevant really). I was in here on Dec 20th. So to make sure I was not looking at an old menu, I approached the bar and said "excuse me but is this the current......" and before I could get the sentence out I was cut off with a sharp "yep". It just came out quite snarky. I just walked back to my table with my tail between my legs and decided to let it go. But all interactions with her felt the same; like she was annoyed by something. We ordered the nachos. They were not good. if you are going to sell nachos on your menu you need some kind of nacho cheese or cheese sauce. We got a plate full of chips that had shredded cheese melted on them (likely in a microwave) so all 30+ chips stuck together in a big clump. It was just really disappointing. I make nachos at home and making a cheese sauce that is delicious (with real cheese) is super easy. The nachos we got would have been more appropriate if I were a college student and I had made them in my dorm room with my tiny microwave. But for a something you order off a menu? Yeah, not so much. My last comment, though simple and small, is actually a big deal to me. I may be alone in this, but....... please write the name of the brewery on your beer list! The board just lists the name of the beer, which I don't always recognize. But when people see the name of a brewery they know or know they like, it helps the beer decision process play out. Yeah, you can look at the tap handles and try and match it up to the numbers on the board (I actually had a hard time doing this and had to ask the annoyed bar tender for help - it seemed to annoy her more), but it would be so much easier if the board just listed the brewery name as well. I feel like this is pretty common practice in most tap rooms. I will stop by again in the future and see if the experience is any better, but for now - meh. read more

The first time my husband and I went into Route 30 it was amazing. Johna (the owner) was there and she was super sweet. It seemed like she really tried to get to know us. The beers on tap were geat, but I do agree with other yelpers, they should put the breweries on the board. We ended up signing up for their mug club. Big mistake. BIG. They told us it would take about 2 weeks to get our $100 custom mugs (we each bought one). Mine came about 6 weeks later and my husband's came about 2-1/2 months later. Every time we asked them where our mugs were, there was a different excuse, consistently blaming the glass artist; she was on vacation, or she was sick. They never offered us any compensation for the fact that they blatantly lied to us. This would not have been a big deal except for the fact that every time we went there, Johna was sitting at a table at the back of the bar chatting with all the employees. After enough trips we realized, unless you are friends with her, you will not receive service. I sat at the bar with an empty glass for 20 minutes looking over my shoulder before Johna said to an employee, "can you please go check on them, she keeps looking at me". I'm not a jerk that demands great service. I'm all about having fun, chatting at work, but do it while you are actually working. It's not that hard to talk to your friends while pouring a beer. But I will say, if you want a great deal on your own custom glass, go to Nichols' Glass in The Dalles. They are amazing... they won't charge you $100 for a glass, and they won't make you wait 3 months to get it. read more

I had a great time at this place. And they featured a hole plethora of these incredibly beautiful hand blown glass beer glasses that people come in and leave and drink their beer from. They're made by the local glass blowing artists Andy Nichols. The bar itself had a nice sort of the old school Oregon historic Route 30 look to it with old license plates and kind of Gears almost a little bit steampunk looking. It was very cool the back room look like it had a sizable room for a band to set up and play and the selection of beers was pretty big they had several to choose from including a large selection of ciders. The food coming out of the kitchen looked delicious. No we didn't order it look like everybody was happy eating whatever they had brought to their tables. The Ambiance was nice to. Pick me up a cool hat. The bartender was very very nice too I had a moment of time to talk to him and he was very careful and open made me feel welcome. read more

This was me and my other half's first time in here and we were expecting way different. The customer service was really odd.. None of the employees we encountered which was 2 didn't have name tags, and there's also a section to sit in the back of the house and front. We walked in expecting to be greeted and offered to go to the back where the live music was and instead we got told in other words "it's full house back there, go ahead and have a seat wherever you'd like." Ok, no problem. Shortly after being greeted, we decided what we wanted to get, the lady who greeted us came up to take our order with no paper or pen, until I started modifying my burger is when she grabbed a iPad to take my order (which made me feel like a bother for asking for the modifications) anyways, a bigger group up friends came in while we were waiting and ordered some drinks, obviously were curious what was going on in the back because the live music they went ahead and helped themselves back there, and apparently there was seating because they never came back out unless to order more drinks. There was two different musics playing in the front/back. My burger was partially still pink, so I didn't even bother eating much. I asked for a refill on my pineapple juice that was first given to me in a cup then the other girl just gave me the pineapple juice they got in a plastic bottle . I was a fan of the beer here. Then I joined the " mug club" and opened my eyes to what had really happened, to me. First off, you basically pay 100$ a year for your mug to have a number on the wall. Mine is 31 and it shall be the dirtiest mug down there because I'll never go back. I requested my mug to be purple and when it came in, my boyfriends had not been "done" yet . Which was odd because we joined together as a gift, for him and us. Johna, if you're reading this just take the mug and break it because you lied and gave me someone else's bland mug. Or how about handing it off to make money. When you made me think it was made, for me. Perhaps maybe your biggest mistake was filling me in that it was made for someone prior to and they disliked it so I got the hand me down. If that don't say shoddy nothing else will. read more

Burgers are mediocre at best. I wouldn't say they are the best in the gorge like they claim. The beer selection is ok. The service is very poor. The kids seem more concerned about their cell phones than the only 2 customers in there.
