Fantastic brisket sausage sandwich today at Roy's! I did not finish it all because the fried green beans were talking to me too. Service was spectacular, lots of smart young ladies running the show. They checked on us several times while we were at the table enjoying our food. Roy's is a clean and cute little place on the north west side of Woodland Park. Pulled pork had a ok taste. Couldn't taste much smoke flavor at all. The bun was cold! And the meat was barely warm. Cold in the middle! These are basic things to get right! Meat should have been HOT and the bun lightly toasted to prevent it from getting soggy from juices and sauce! But the real judge of good BBQ restaurants is the sides! Worth noting we live 5 miles from 3-4 of the top BBQ restaurants in Texas so hard to comment fairly on BBQ. The people/kids serving are all really awesome. We had brisket, pulled pork and turkey and sides. Brisket lacked bark, fatty (in a good way) a bit overcooked, pulled pork nothing special, Turkey juicy and delicious. Mac n cheese was like soup, slaw was nicely seasoned and tasted pretty good, potato salad had nice consistency but was heavy with mustard powder. Blackberry cobbler was the star by far, really tasty! Smokey inside as it appears the smokers are connected to the building..pretty unbearable. read more

I highly recommend the fried catfish at Roy's Crew BBQ. I know it seems odd going to a barbecue place to eat catfish but it was great. I've had the barbecue here and the smoked turkey and they're all good but this fried catfish was excellent tonight. Also, I had the fried okra and coleslaw and they gave me several hush puppies. also, their homemade cornbread is delicious and they put a chunk of that on my platter. This was a late evening stop for us while on vacation and glad we did! It was getting close to their closing time but they were happy to serve us. The place inside was clean & country welcoming. They have a lot to choose from and it was a little overwhelming for me since I didn't look at the menu before hand. The girl at the counter was super helpful and gave me some suggestions. Super excited after trying this place yesterday! Let's start with the good. Pros: - Catfish and Chicken Fried Steak are EXCEPTIONAL! I am from Oklahoma, those are staple food for us and I'd have been thrilled with either one there, let alone to get in here in CO. - I got a three meat plate, turkey, hot links and brisket (wet side, I like that they gave me the choice). Brisket and hot links were fantastic. - Sides were all good as well, Cole slaw got rave reviews, beans, Mac and cheese, fries all were tasty. Rolls were really good, not too sweet. We didn't try the cornbread, that was a miss on our part. - Nice atmosphere and it smells like a proper bbq place when you walk in. Kids loved the arcade game and playing mini Shoots and Ladders. Improvements: - Turkey was a little dry. Could probably use a bit of a brine before cooking (wet or dry). Wasn't sad I got it, but could be a bit better. - Really disliked the sauce. Used to a more traditional tomato and brown sugar/molasses based sauce in OK and TX, while this was more vinegar I think. Oh my goodness, probably one of the best meals I've had out in a while. Everything was homemade. And I mean everything. I want to preface this review with the fact that I am a die hard bbq guy from Kansas. The meat was on the bland side, brisket and turkey were tender but not much flavor, in my opinion. Hot links were more like a smoked sausage instead of a hot link, maybe received the wrong meat, but they weren't hot. The beans were a basic pinto bean with a little spice. Coleslaw was good and I would get it again. My wife ordered the chicken strips which were decent chicken strips, mashed potatoes were very good, fried pickles were just "OK". There was something in the BBQ sauce that I couldn't figure out, nice flavor but not for my taste buds. The service was great, everyone was friendly and the atmosphere is what you would expect from a BBQ joint. They do serve breakfast and that's something I'd like to try before I head back to Kansas. As soon as I got into this restaurant it felt like I was in a cabin. I ordered the 1 meat with two sides and it was good but it only came with two ribs I thought it would be more. Prices are fair. Service is super friendly and helpful. Decor is cozy and rustic. The food was, okay. The brisket was very dry. The spicy sausage had absolutely no spice. Potato salad portion was tiny. Cornbread was large but also very dry, almost hard. Mac and cheese was okay but pretty bland and needed salt and pepper. I came in around noon. Not sure if I was served yesterdays stuff, but considering how dry the brisket and the cornbread was, I'd say yes. The sausage was warm. The condiment station was great and pickles, tomato, onion etc are available. All in all it was alright. Not memorable enough to warrant return visits, but I might be back sometime. This was pretty darn disappointing and I hope the pictures show it. The girl up front was incredibly friendly and welcoming, she's awesome. The restaurant is fine, typical bbq setup and everything was stocked nicely. Now the food, what are they doing? Dry burnt brisket that turns to dust when you try to pick it up? The sausage looks like it came from a grocery store package of hillshire farms and thrown on a flat top. The Mac'N'Cheese was curdled and pretty bad, I would have been happier with Kraft Mac. The potatoes and gravy were fine although I would have loved to taste some more spice in the gravy. Food was amazing. All in our group had the tractor sandwich. I should have taken a picture. WOW! Barely ate any of the sandwich because it was so big. Did try all the meats on the sandwich and it was AMAZING! Loved the standard BBQ meats-brisket and pork; but the smoked ham was the best ham I have ever eaten. Their BBQ sauce is very tasty also. I dont understand the 5 star reviews. My brisket was total fat! I am talking 5-6 slices of pure fat. NO meat at all. The bbq sauce (and sorry folks - you only get ONE choice) is so sweet it's gross and overpowering. The coleslaw was nothing special but the potato salad was good. The green beans were so heavily breaded you couldn't taste them. All in all a terribly disappointing meal that was $$$$ and we WILL NOT BE BACK. horrible. read more

The last two times I've ordered pulled pork food to go I got container 1/2 full of fat. The meat is expensive especially when one factors in I'm only getting 1/2 meat and 1/2 non edible fat! I'm electing not to go back to Roy's but instead to bbq shop in Florrisant where they trim fat from your order before packing. It's a bit cheater also I think. read more

Roy's Crew BBQ: Where Flavor Goes to Die (and Sugar Comes to Mourn It) My wife and I ventured to Roy's Crew BBQ with the faint hope that we might actually enjoy a meal out instead of reinforcing our usual mantra: Why did we leave the house when we could have made this better ourselves? After all, sometimes you just want a break from cooking. Sometimes you want to be wowed. And sometimes, you just want to know what it's like to eat meat that has seemingly been prepared in a malfunctioning Crock-Pot by a child with an unmonitored supply of liquid smoke. I ordered the "Tractor Man Sandwich" which sounds like something a burly lumberjack would eat after a hard day of honest work ham, brisket, pulled pork, and hot links, topped with two onion rings. It was described as a huge sandwich, which I took to mean substantial rather than overwhelmingly disappointing. It was supposed to come with a side, so I ordered onion rings. When the food arrived, I looked around for my side, only to have the server cheerfully inform me that the two onion rings on the sandwich were, in fact, my side. Excuse me? By this logic, if I ordered a cheeseburger with cheese, could I also claim that my side was cheese? If I ordered a chicken salad, should I expect the lettuce to be counted as my side dish? I briefly considered launching into full lawyer-mode cross-examination, but I let it go, choosing instead to channel my frustration into this review. The ham? So dry I think it was originally intended as a fire-starting material. The brisket? Equally desiccated, which is an accomplishment in itself. I understand that some places might mess up ham, but a BBQ place should not be able to ruin brisket. That's like an Italian restaurant burning pasta. It's like a sushi bar that exclusively serves fish sticks. Even worse, there was no discernible smoke ring on the meat, making me suspect that the "pit" in this supposed BBQ pit was actually just a slow cooker set on "despair." The pulled pork and hot link were fine. Just fine. The kind of fine that makes you nod politely while internally acknowledging that it has neither inspired nor offended you. But then came the sauce. I use the word "sauce" loosely because what they served was less of a BBQ sauce and more of a liquified sugar bomb, disguised by a deep red color. It had the same complexity as a grade-school cafeteria BBQ "sauce"except, honestly, the cafeteria version had more depth. If this sauce were a musical note, it would be played exclusively on a kazoo. Then there was the bun toasted to the point that it transcended "crispy" and entered the realm of crouton. The bread fought back with each bite, requiring the same jaw strength one might need to chew through old leather. I expected it to snap in half like peanut brittle at any moment. Meanwhile, my wife ordered the chicken tenders, which were apparently such an act of charity that the kitchen tossed in a few extras. How generous! The tenders were thin-cut, maximizing the breading-to-meat ratio, making them a highly efficient vehicle for the same overpoweringly sweet BBQ sauce. Imagine if you took a funnel cake, removed the sugar, added a whisper of chicken essence, and then dipped it in syrup. That's what we were dealing with here. Now, I will say, I liked the atmosphere. It had the charm of an old-school smoke pit eatery minus, of course, any sign of an actual smoke pit. The restaurant motif reminded me of the Road House movie, but without the brawls, mullets, or Patrick Swayze roundhouse kicks to keep things interesting. In the end, this meal reaffirmed what my wife and I already knew: We can make better food at home. If you love BBQ that's been smoked over real wood, that melts in your mouth, and has depth of flavor, this is not your place. If, however, you've always wondered what BBQ might taste like if prepared by an overenthusiastic toddler with a penchant for artificial smoke flavoring, then by all means Roy's Crew BBQ is waiting for you. Final Verdict: One star, for reminding me that bad BBQ is more tragic than no BBQ at all. read more

Things that make you go "hmmm." Normally, this would be at least a 4-star review, but something went wrong with this visit. To begin with, I have always gone to Roy Crew's with friends and never by myself. This time I was alone. This difference was glaring. My order was simple: 4 slices of cornbread to go. If you have never had cornbread that made you wish it was the entire meal then you haven't tasted Roy's Crew's cornbread. It is as close to perfect as perfect can get. It is so good you can save some for the next day, put it in the microwave, and relish that still "just made" taste. The texture and moistness are on point. I have not had better cornbread in the Pike's Peak region. So what was the problem? As I said, I ordered 4 pieces of cornbread to go. Easy, peasy. Why did it take almost 30 minutes to fulfill the order? I watched as order after order was delivered to waiting customers. Many of those orders included cornbread. To me, it was a simple matter of getting 4 pieces of cornbread, putting them in a to-go carton, and handing it to me. Am I "underthinking" this? I positioned myself in plain sight near the counter. Nothing. Finally, just before reaching my DGAF level. I got up and went to the counter. Had I not gone to the counter to ask about my order, my wait might have been a lot longer. I was told to wait while my order was checked. A few seconds later, the counter attendant handed me my order with a sincere apology. As I mentioned earlier, this was the first time I had gone to Roy's Crew BBQ alone. The food is great, the service is wonderful, and the atmosphere, pleasant. Except for today. The day I went alone. Roy's Crew is located in Woodland Park, CO., in the mountains, west of Colorado Springs. Less than one half of one percent of the population is Black. I'm not saying that is the reason for the less-than-stellar service. It's just one of those things that make me go, "hmmmm." read more
