    Chicken Egg Foo Young

Always on a quest for good Chinese food! Today I think we found it! My favorite is Egg Foo Young- and theirs was delicious. Fresh hot and really good gravy. I ordered the chicken-can't wait to return and try another. We had crab Rangoon for an appetizer and it was really tasty!

First time trying out this local restaurant. Menu looked pretty Americanized, so I thought if I called and talked in Chinese, maybe the chef would make it taste more Asian, but nope they don't speak Chinese, oops! That's ok. Beef chow mien-- they asked if I wanted to wide noodles, I said yes, but it came with crispy thin egg noodles, which is fine, still tasted good! Beef was pretty tender. Pretty salty overall, but it's fine cuz I ate with rice. Maybe I ordered wrong. Might try again next time. Mu Shu pork-- this was a bit too sweet, but with rice and the thin wheat wrap, it's OK. Might skip on this one next time. Egg rolls-- the crunch was pretty good. Inside was pretty filling, kinda like bean paste, not sure. But it's not bad! Royal Cantonese steak-- the meat was kind of tough, flavor was a bit too sweet, and maybe kind of like a darker flavor of ketchup? but the mixed veggies weren't bad, I liked the baby corn and water chestnuts. Savory pepper fish fillet-- I liked that the fish fillets sits on a bed of bok choy leafs? Or some dark green leafy veggies. After baking, they were crispy. Jalapeño got some kick to it. The fillets were pretty tiny but not bad! This is probably my favorite out of all five we ordered. Regarding service, the staff/owner was very friendly. They were all masked, and had a system where they separate used pens and sanitized pens. They said the fortune cookie and almond cookie were in the bag, but we only got fortune cookies and no almond cookies... Overall, I think I was pleasantly surprised that the foods were not as Americanized as I imagined, but still definitely quite Americanized compared to other Chinese restaurants. Portion sizes were definitely on the small side, smaller than majority of Asian restaurants in the area, and the price was way higher too. I ordered "small" for all dishes, yet the total came out to be $74. That's fine because we had wanted to try this place for some time and we wanted to support Asian owned establishment.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. The prices are outrageously high for the quality of food you receive. We spent $60 on just three dishes: orange chicken, vegetable lo mein, and Mongolian beef. The lo mein noodles had almost no flavor, and the Mongolian beef was extremely lacking--only four small very chewy pieces of meat! For the price, I expected much better. I won't be coming back.

I thought I had written a review for this place before but I guess not. I have been here a handful of times. It's my favorite and go-to place for Chinese in the areas of Mundelein, Vernon Hills, Libertyville, Lincolnshire etc. I have had consistent good food and nice service here. The restaurant has a friendly atmosphere, the menu options have a good variety, the prices are reasonable and the quality of food is good. It's a family owned place and they treat you like family friends. I have enjoyed their Egg rolls, Spring rolls, Pot stickers, Crab Rangoon, Egg Drop soup, Wonton Dumpling soup, Cashew chicken, Empress chicken, Kung Pao chicken, Singapore noodles, Royal Cantonese noodles, etc. The food is made spicy according to your taste. Unlike some other Chinese restaurants in the burbs, the food here isn't bland. You should check them out if you haven't yet. It's a good restaurant. I recommend it.

I had high hopes for this place given that it has a nicer look and feel to the dining room than other Chinese restaurants in the area. The plates, table settings, chairs, and decorations all appear to be nicer than normal. The menu also has a good selection of choices and they offer full-service dining. In addition, they also have more parking available than other local favorites. Unfortunately, the food is where the experience really fell short for me. Even for Americanized Chinese food, the flavor is bland and care for textures is almost non-existent. But at least the portion sizes are decently large. Here are my thoughts on the different items I tried: Hot and sour soup: Other than having a strong pepper flavor, there's not much to say about this soup. It was too thin in consistency and flat in flavor for me. The green onions and tofu did nothing to really add flavor to the soup. Egg drop soup: Very thin consistency and the egg in the soup was barely noticeable. This tasted like a very bland wonton soup with a small touch of beaten egg. Orange chicken: The chicken was overcooked and the batter wasn't really even crispy. Despite a golden color to the chicken, the flavor of the sauce was hardly noticeable -- not particularly sweet or spicy. Although there was a slice of fresh orange on top of the dish, the orange flavor did not really add any level of brightness from citrus peel or juice that I would have expected. I also wasn't a fan of the flavor of broccoli after it was sauteed in the orange sauce. Mu shu pork: The pancakes were not elastic at all, easily falling apart before I could wrap the filling inside of them. The filling itself was pretty decent -- with a nice mix of lean pork, celery, carrots, cabbage, and wood ear sauteed in a light plum sauce. But it also wasn't particularly tasty and didn't really get much "wok hay" infused into the food. Overall, it's a bit more pricey than standard take-out Chinese and other full-service Chinese restaurants in the northwest suburbs -- however the food doesn't reflect the price. Even without considering the price, I wasn't impressed with the food as it didn't really show care in execution nor a demonstration of infusing good Chinese flavors and techniques. The service was also friendly, but wasn't very fast.

    Scallion oil chicken

A MUST try neighborhood restaurant! The food is absolutely delicious and I could taste the love and flavor! We ordered orange beef- perfectly crispy and sweet and we special ordered scallion oil chicken dish (with veggies) - it was perfectly savory and bright! Doreen and John, the owners make you feel like family as soon as you walk into the restaurant. I have nothing but great things to say about Royal Cantonese. Great food, kind and caring owners!

Egg rolls are the best around. BBQ pork is quite tasty. Portions are plentiful and fairly priced. Moo Shu is terrific.

Dragon Star has all the usual stuff that's Americanized Chinese. Has big portions, which is a good thing about it. The prices aren't bad especially on the lunch specials. Came in at lunch and placed an order to go. It's one of those places you go in and order at a window, and then sit and wait for it. The atmosphere is pretty lame to be honest, with not much going on. About the worst thing that can be said about it. The best thing is the cheap prices. It's about $10 for the regular size entrees. They also have lunch specials. Has vegetarian choices. I got the General Tso's Tofu. Good spice to it. The tofu was firm, and there was a good variety of vegetables including broccoli, carrots, and others. For lunch takeout it's pretty good. It's pretty fast to get most orders. There's a variety of proteins to choose from including tofu for vegetarians.

When I walked in, there were some patrons eating a simple rice and noodle dish and there it was front and center, a microwave... and the older lady cook had just put something in there and punched it for a preset 1 minute timer. So that definitely made me ... know this was about to be sad. They do have woks going, but it looks like the main things that touch them is the noodles and rice only so there is SOME hot food Here is my order: 1 Fried Dumplings 1 Peppered Steak 1 Orange Chicken 1 Beef Lo Mein 1 Beef Fried Rice 1 Sweet and Sour soup This is my review of each: 1 Fried Dumplings - 2/5 Soggy, prefried, definitely from the microwave, not firm dumpling wrapper with bad five spice aftertaste. 1 Peppered Steak and Onion - 2/5 absolute ripoff, meager portions of steak, should be called Onion with Some Steak. just taste like the generic beef and broccoli juice flavor, filled to the brim of raw onion, and poorly cooked bell peppers. 1 Orange Chicken - 1/5 Prefried, Sweet, soggy, bad pieces of meat, absolutely sus looking 1 Beef Lo Mein - 4/5 not enough sauce on the noodles, but the noodles were cooked well and were very hot so I suspect that actually touched the Wok 1 Beef Fried Rice - 3/5 (only because of the raw onion) the rice was the oily fried goodness, idk why they put unevenly cut raw onions in this. It ruined it a bit. 1 Sweet and Sour soup 0/5 - absolutely atrocious. Nothing there at all. Money value I give it a 4/5. Would not personally eat inside as it is cramped and not separate from kitchen. Will not return though overall
