I LOVE a good diner. Don't get me wrong, bougie bruncheries have their place, but this classic gem of a diner makes you feel at home and serves up food and service for the soul. I'm a breakfast man. I loved the Hollandaise; more on the savory lemon gravy side of things, but not too heavy in the lemon. SUPER tasty. Ask for the Chipotle Hollandaise if you want a little extra zing. I did. I put it on an egg casserole which tasted great with eggs over easy. Make sure to get the pancakes on the side. You can eat them with regular table syrup, but for a small up-charge, you can get 100% maple. I befriended Chay, my server, as well as Christina the owner. We had LOVELY conversation, and I even got to sample a very tasty cream of mushroom soup and a lovely creamy salsa verde. The space is very family friendly. I was served hash browns with my breakfast on two occasions that were old and hard and not edible. The remainder of the breakfast, eggs, ham and pancakes were okay but unfortunately didn't make up for the stale potatoes. Freshly cooked food is a minimum requirement for any restaurant in business, especially given the cost these days. Bottom Line: Family run diner that is worth a visit. Good food and service, but, bring a little extra cash. This place, in the heart of the charming Libertyville downtown, is run by a Greek family of which the matriarch, a lovely person, runs a very tight ship. The place has a certain quirky charm, a cross between traditional diner and touch of formal dining room with the somewhat ungainly, but at the same time, interesting, large, brass chandeliers making their presence known in the dining spaces. There's also lots of effort put into decorative arrangements in what would seem to be valuable table space (with items I really wonder how many people really buy, including some items you might find in a local market, with a very interesting mix of items, and again, wondering how many people really come there for items you can easily find elsewhere, but ok). It seems if customers were sat at the "decoration" tables, and a table or two were added, they could reduce wait times, crowding, and maybe even prices a bit with the additional revenue. We waited about 20 minutes for a table on a Sunday morning with several parties, all long time customers judging by how they were greeted which was charming in its own right. Waiting is crowded in a narrow entry hallway. Tip: Don't stand around the register waiting for your table or you'll have to deal with the owner making rounds to check on customers. When seated we were given some time to make decisions before being approached by our server. An assistant server brought coffee. When we did order some of our party asked about options but were promptly informed there are no substitutions without an additional charge--OK. I ordered the two-egg breakfast with ham off the bone. When it came out there were four eggs on the plate. I let our server know there may have been a mistake as I ordered two eggs not four. She pointed out that they double their egg orders so if you ordered one egg you actually get two, etc.! Wow! Talk about leaning into customer orientation! The meals were delicious and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Server attention was spot on--not too little, not too much, but just right. Then, the bill. Ok, with each plate nearing $20, breakfast will set you back a bit, which, I'm sorry, you have to question. The food was good but not $20 amazing in quality nor portion which is why this place will not be a regular but an on-the-radar back up every now and then. While the breakfast was fine, they should not add $2 to the bill for a couple of seniors asking for an additional plate. The not huge omelet already cost $17! The owner could not have cared less when we asked about the charge. We had to ask for jelly and the server brought over two of those tiny packets and he also quized us on what flavor we wanted. It is simply an incredible experience and I am so grateful to be able to visit this special place. I feel a really strong sense of belonging, when I am there and it feels so good. If you are looking for tasty, homey breakfast/ brunch food in a comfy setting then look no further. Townee Restaurant has you covered. Townee is a family owned and run restaurant that serves tasty, no-frills food that hits the spot. It's sort of an old fashioned diner looking restaurant that is family friendly and is usually busy during the peak breakfast/ brunch hours over the weekend. I have been here twice. Once prior to COVID and once recently, post COVID. Their prices have changed in that time period. The omelet prices, e.g., have gone up a couple of dollars. In my two visits, I have gotten the usual breakfast dish that I get at most breakfast/ brunch restaurants- omelet and pancakes. I also ordered a side of bacon for that extra savory crunch. I ordered a gyro omelet with jalapeños (adding jalapeños was an upcharge), fruits instead of hash browns and pancakes instead of a toast and a cup of coffee. My son ordered got a kids meal of one egg made overeasy with bacon and chocolate chips pancakes (chocolate chips had an upcharge). The restaurant was semi-busy. There were a couple of tables (for two) available and a booth was just about to open up. We opted for a table. Service was good overall (a bit slow at times where I had to get up and get our server's attention but it wasn't a big deal). The food was above average, solid in taste. Nothing fancy or gimmicky. Just your straightforward breakfast meal. It did its job and hit the spot. We are full and satisfied. The restaurant was clean and well-lit. It has a back and front entrance depending on where you park. The restaurant sells baked items like cookies and pies as well which you can find by their cashier's and kitchen table counters. Strictly based on food and its pricing, I would give this restaurant 3 stars. Overall (w/ service, atmosphere) 3.5 stars but rounding out to 4. Give them a try if you haven't been before. read more

An excellent, uncrowned spot for breakfast and brunch. Good value for the money. It closes at 2pm, so make sure it's open when you want to go. Very adorable interior! It's very "classic diner", booths, counter stools, and all. They don't take reservations. The two of us came in at peak brunch hours on Saturday and were seated immediately. The place is bigger than it looks! The servers were very attentive, my coffee mug never stayed empty for longer than a minute. The menu had a lot of variety, you won't suffer from lack of choice here. I got the veggie omelet with egg whites, and it was delicious - any place that can do a broccoli omelet well is good in my book! My boyfriend got one of the skillets, and he finished the whole thing. Two meals and two drinks came out to about $35. You pay at the counter up front. We both left full and still had some food left over. We'll definitely be back! read more

The owner, our waitress as well as other waitresses who just passed our table were all very attentive, making sure we didn't need anything additional as we were eating & after. The is a small mom and pop shop that is quaint and feels like your grandmas Greek kitchen. Very simple dishes, sandwiches, salads and some hearty meals that are made with love. A real steal! A real deal! All American breakfast place! On a Thursday, walked in and sat at the counter. The waitress was there in an instant, making sure I had coffee, ready to take my order. A happy cook was enjoying his banter with the waitress and she was too. The menu has everything that you might want. I went with my traditional: two eggs, sausage, hash browns, wheat toast and added pancakes. (Yes, pancakes! I sampled, did not eat everything, I swear). I hadn't noticed, but they offer two eggs for every one ordered. (Sometimes, elsewhere, I've ordered three. Whew! I could have had six eggs!) The order came quickly, right after a ring of the smiling cook's bell. Just as ordered. Hash browns were browned perfectly. Pancakes were very tasty. I went to this place thinking it was a small and simple diner since I have always seen the rear door entrance only. I was surprised to see that it is actually a big, neat and nice breakfast/restaurant place once we got inside. There are a couple of big dining areas with tables and booths, as well as stools facing the kitchen area. Everyone in the place was friendly, happy, and efficient. We ordered basic breakfast items plus coffee. FRENCH TOAST with bacon and eggs; EGGS with sausages, pancakes and hash browns. They were all cooked well and the coffee was solid. Nothing special about everything since we only had these things which were quite hard to mess up. The rating is because I personally believe that all the items are overpriced. There was nothing that really stood out and knowing that there are other breakfast places around with good food and more reasonable prices, I will stick with a 3. Maybe because it's located in the city's downtown? I still do not think it justifies the high prices. The place is clean (the restroom too), with parking behind the establishment, service is great and it is in the heart of downtown Libertyville. It was a pleasant Sunday morning experience though and it's nice to cross this place out of my list of "I want to check that small diner", which did not turn out to be small anyway=) read more

Awesome diner! Our kids love it here because they serve Mickey Mouse pancakes (eyes and everything)! It feels like the owners and waitresses know their customers very well. Lots of regulars. Also, every first Sunday's they have a balloon entertainer make balloons for the kids. Also, their soups, skillets, and steak & eggs are our favorites. My wife and extended family have been eating at Townee Square for over 6 years and have had good food and service for most of those years. During Covid we have been active in supporting local restaurants and businesses and fully understood that many were short staffed. That is just they way it has been. But today the owner was rude to me and my wife and we walked out and we will now have to find a new restaurant to enjoy. How was she rude?Well, we have been sitting in the same area for years and enter through the back entrance. When I walked to the front to let them know we have a seat, just like I have been doing for years, she explained to me that she had a list and that we had to wait. More than fair. We waited for about 10 mins and when we were next a gentleman walked in and she sat him in the seat that we were sitting at when we walked in. What got me was the look she gave me as she walked past us to get his attention to seat him. So much for customer loyalty. Malaysia has been our server a few times and she's always very pleasant and attentive. The food was delicious omg !! Delicious breakfast and great service! Warm and friendly staff who go above and beyond considering they are short staffed. There was an irate customer who was angry that it took 5 minutes for a server to come to his table to take his order and he wanted a full refund. The owner handled it with grace and compassion but did not give him a refund. I don't blame her. He was rude and argumentative. We had a wonderful experience and delicious food!
