Got lunch for takeout from this crummy looking Chinese place in Mundelein. It sure looked like crap, but it was better than we thought it would be though. Dragon Star has all the usual stuff that's Americanized Chinese. Has big portions, which is a good thing about it. The prices aren't bad especially on the lunch specials. Came in at lunch and placed an order to go. It's one of those places you go in and order at a window, and then sit and wait for it. The atmosphere is pretty lame to be honest, with not much going on. About the worst thing that can be said about it. The best thing is the cheap prices. It's about $10 for the regular size entrees. They also have lunch specials. Has vegetarian choices. I got the General Tso's Tofu. Good spice to it. The tofu was firm, and there was a good variety of vegetables including broccoli, carrots, and others. For lunch takeout it's pretty good. It's pretty fast to get most orders. There's a variety of proteins to choose from including tofu for vegetarians. read more

Had been looking for Chinese after moving from Chicago. I ordered online for pickup and ended up waiting about 7-10 minutes longer than the expected pickup time. When I walked in, there were some patrons eating a simple rice and noodle dish and there it was front and center, a microwave... and the older lady cook had just put something in there and punched it for a preset 1 minute timer. So that definitely made me ... know this was about to be sad. They do have woks going, but it looks like the main things that touch them is the noodles and rice only so there is SOME hot food Here is my order: 1 Fried Dumplings 1 Peppered Steak 1 Orange Chicken 1 Beef Lo Mein 1 Beef Fried Rice 1 Sweet and Sour soup This is my review of each: 1 Fried Dumplings - 2/5 Soggy, prefried, definitely from the microwave, not firm dumpling wrapper with bad five spice aftertaste. 1 Peppered Steak and Onion - 2/5 absolute ripoff, meager portions of steak, should be called Onion with Some Steak. just taste like the generic beef and broccoli juice flavor, filled to the brim of raw onion, and poorly cooked bell peppers. 1 Orange Chicken - 1/5 Prefried, Sweet, soggy, bad pieces of meat, absolutely sus looking 1 Beef Lo Mein - 4/5 not enough sauce on the noodles, but the noodles were cooked well and were very hot so I suspect that actually touched the Wok 1 Beef Fried Rice - 3/5 (only because of the raw onion) the rice was the oily fried goodness, idk why they put unevenly cut raw onions in this. Have to say tonight's carry out order confirms I will never order from them again. Gave them 1 star because I had to . My egg roll order was missing, my pork with vegetables was 3 pieces of pork, an abundance of onions, 2 mushroom, and maybe a piece of celery... something green and over cooked. Meal was so horrible I dumped it down garbage disposal and ate a frozen dinner. This place has really gone downhill. Don't waste your time or money. read more

I'm dog sitting for a friend for Labor Day weekend and I was craving Chinese food I've tried a couple other places in the area and I always like to give a new place a whirl. Safe to say at least for this area I will be sticking to what I know. The prices are fine I can't speak to the staff because I ordered through Uber Eats but they were accommodating when I needed to add to my order. I'm not sure if the Ambiance either but from what I've seen it looks like it would be a good place to stop into at least. Definitely at least looks clean from what I've seen in others pictures. Let's get to the part that we're almost concerned about, the food. Honestly spend your money elsewhere in my opinion because half of my order was cold and it did not take long for delivery so there is that. They make the saddest excuse for crab rangoon that I have ever seen including the ones that you know are Frozen that you get as an appetizer at the sushi place. You all know what I'm talking about. I will post a picture. My order included a small shrimp fried rice, the supposed crab rangoon, vegetable lo mein and sweet and sour chicken. Also I ordered two egg rolls at the last minute that they were very accommodating about adding to my order. So again points for that! It's pretty sad to say though that those egg rolls were the best part of what I ordered. The noodles or lo mein needs to come with an allergy warning because it is most definitely made with some type of peanut sauce so please be aware of that if you're ever ordering a noodle dish from this location! The sweet and sour chicken is really nothing to write home about but it was still tasty and it was one of the few things that arrived hot. I also ordered egg drop soup which literally tasted like nothing . Less than nothing if that's possible. Looks like normal egg drop soup but tastes like absolutely nothing. So disappointing. This is my second time ordering chicken fried rice and the first time, there was one piece of chicken on top but I figured it was a mistake so I didn't say anything. The food isn't downright horrible, but it's not good either. Just mediocre, and I emphasize....*at best*. The general tso chicken was dry, chewy, and bland. The crab rangoon and egg rolls were anemic on the amount of filling, and also on the bland side. The flavor on the lo mein is okay, but they really skimp on the meat. Overall...pretty disappointing. We've been searching for an above average Chinese takeout restaurant and gave this spot a try...and we will continue our search. Nothing special here. Egg rolls had a nice crust but we're under filled with a tasteless vegetable mush. The mu shu chicken was mostly cabbage and some slivers of chicken, again with no flavor. The orange beef had a nice spicy kick and orange flavor but there was way too much breading and too little beef. Some good sized nuggets were meatless. We ordered the House Special Fried Rice and General Tso's for carry out. Food was ready in 10-15 minutes, the gentleman at the counter was helpful when we asked questions, and the food was good. I really enjoyed the House Fried Rice. It was just what I wanted today. Wife said the General Tso's was good, but not great. She wouldn't order it again. Haven't eaten Chinese food in ages. Tiny, family owned place in one of the Mundelein older strip mall. Parking is shared with other stores, but found a spot on Saturday afternoon. They are obviously big on carryouts / catering because there are only 3.5 tables here. The word "ambience" can not be mentioned here, the tabletop looks clean but feels a bit sticky, hopefully food is good, still waiting .... Food arrives in about 15 minutes, not bad, not bad at all. Mongolian beef was very good but the more you ate it, the more you can taste how salty it was. The orange chicken was heavily breaded and it's flavor was really weird. It was soggy and the chicken was very hard to chew. Extremely dry. I figured ok, the crab Rangoon you cannot really mess up. Nope, It was undercooked and the filling was very small. Definitely a hidden Mundelein gem! The food is very flavorful and portions are generous- enough for leftovers in our family.

I've lived in a dozen states and every time I move I have to find a new Chinese place. I always place a test order of my three favorite appetizers and this helps me figure out which place is going to be My Place. I got fried wontons, boneless spare ribs, and fried dumplings and they did really well! Easily 9/10 on my own really stupid scale that holds zero weight in the real world. I love this place. The food is always fresh and never greasy. The crab Rangoon is the four point style which is just better anyway but the filling is excellent. The orange chicken is the perfect citrusy sweet with a bit of savory. Huge lunch combo portions are a great deal. I love the fried rice because it's not mushy or overly salty. All varieties are outstanding. I have never had a bad experience here. I've had Mongolian beef, Lo mein, chow fun and probably most of the chicken dishes. All were as good or better than anywhere else because of the lack of grease. The staff is warm and friendly always. They are also very accommodating! We moved to Mundelein from the city, after living near Chinatown for many years, and I've been desperate to find a Chinese restaurant that A) delivers and B) tastes good. Dragon Star delivers on all accounts! As a self-proclaimed "Chinese food foodie", I can't wait to try more of what they've got! The orange chicken was tender and perfectly crispy (lightly), and the cream Rangoon was gooey, yummy and light. The Steamed dumplings were perfect, and their dipping sauce was the bomb - and they sprinkled oregano (I think) in it; so so good! And they gave me a 45-60 minute delivery time, but were at my door 18 minutes later. I think I finally found our new favorite! read more

I don't know where to begin... the food looks and tastes like something served at a homeless shelter, made by white people... everything is so salty, and the breaded chicken pieces from the sweet and sour chicken is a breaded joke. There is virtually no meat and it's hard as a rock. The pork fried rice looked like Alpo dog food... it had an appearance of instant rice with soy added to look like fried rice... the wonton soup tasted like a cup of liquid salt no real beef flavor... We live on the far east side of Gurnee (Near Grand and Greenbay) and since our favorite Chinese takeout in Waukegan became worse and worse with each owner change we have been on the search in our area for the "good stuff" the last few years. No luck! Based on the reviews, I ventured out to Mundelein to Dragon Star. No disappointment there! Simply put I would walk barefoot in a blizzard to get takeout from Dragon Star. Our success stories: Hunan Beef - Kung Pao Chicken - Egg Foo Young - Sweet and Sour Chicken - Sesame Chicken - Lo Mein - Fried Rice - Sesame beef - Crabmeat Rangoon. We would order any of these again in a heartbeat but obviously we are still checking out the menu options. I'm looking forward to their Hot and Spicy Beef and perhaps the Orange beef next Friday. read more

Was having a small get together and stopped at this place to pick up some Chinese food. It was very good and fairly affordable. The eggrolls were great, as were the Crab Rangoon. My go to Chinese restaurant! I have tried most of them in Libertyville and Mundelein and this place is the most consistent. I've had the bbq pork, crab Rangoon, egg rolls, chicken kow/moo goo gia pan, Mongolian beef, sweet and sour chicken, lo mien, and wonton soup. I've liked everything but the soup and sweet and sour chicken. Not that those two dishes were bad but I have a preference for them from a different restaurant. Everything else is great! Their Mongolian beef is the best, I've not had any that good from any other restaurant besides PF Changs. The egg rolls are huge and they have a coupon on their website for them. They are very fast too, I usually order on the way there and it's ready by the time I arrive It's a family run place and their kids are usually hanging out there doing homework. The owner runs the front and her husband runs the kitchen. She's amazing, she takes orders in Chinese, English and Spanish an goes from one language to the other whenever needed. Another thing, you can see right into the kitchen, which is kinda cool. It's definitely more of a carry out place but there are a few tables. Could use some sprucing up but I guess it does the job if you had to eat in. It's a bit of a hole in the wall in the Fairhaven area of Mundelein (my family has lived there for like 60 years so that's what they always called it, not sure if they still do), and if you drive too fast you will miss it! Oh Dragon Star, you are in reality one of the reasons why I don't judge books by their covers. From the outside you look like a hotmess in the middle of nowhere Mundelein. But additionally, if I could I would dive head first into your BBQ Pork Fried Rice. So truly unexpected and never failing to disappoint me, I stop in here on several occasions when visiting the mom in the burbs. I've sampled your sweet and sour chicken (sauce on the side and no, you don't have to special request that). I've had a few bites of your egg foo young -- and for someone who doesn't even like egg foo young, just wow. I don't like eating eggrolls with my meals but the owner always let me substitute it for a drink which is really nice. Dragon Star has very friendly owners and I love stopping in here when I visit mom on a lazy weekend. PS: No MSG and they cook with 100% cholesterol free corn oil. PPS: You're welcome. read more
