Honestly mediocre coffee. The look of the place gives the illusion of high-end, delicious coffee, but don't be deceived--it isn't great.

If you are looking for that cozy coffee house where you can shmooze with friends for hours, while drinking terrific coffee and eating mouth watering pastries, this is not you place. To me, the acid test (pun intended!) for a coffee house is how good the coffee is. I mean the unadulterated, drip coffee -- you know, the real thing. Royal passed this test! The coffee is hand brewed. The blend has a touch of espresso that gives it a European flair. In short, the coffee is really good. So the "drinking terrific coffee" part is there. But the array of noshes is limited to 3 choices. A cupcake. A muffin. A scone. In contrast to the above mentioned hand brewed coffee, the muffin I tried tasted processed. And not fresh at all. The space isn't comfy-cozy. So you may not want to sit for hours, sipping, reading, and shmoozing. But if all you want is a great cup of freshly brewed coffee, perhaps To-Go, then Royal At the Biltmore is your place. read more

I love the drip coffee here, unfortunately their baristas are for the most part, ridonkulous. A few months back I dragged my then boyfriend here at 7 am for coffee. I convinced him that Royal would be faster than that big coffee chain. It took 20 minutes to receive 2 drip coffees. Why? Because for each cup of coffee ordered the barista did this hilarious song and dance where she individually ground the coffee (not doing a few at a time -- only at a time), then make little origami pterodactyl's out of the coffee filters prior to pouring the hot water through the drip thingy. Seriously. It's fantastic that she was so dedicated to her craft but gurl, those coffee beans and origami pterodactyl's were way over the top. Cue to a few months later. My very generous boss gave me a nice $20 gift cert to Royal as a going away present. Lemme me tell you something, this former boss is a good guy and makes ample money to buy a $20 gift card. When I opened the gift he said something to the effect of "I don't know what was going on in there. They ran out of gift cards and gave me this instead (their "punch card" with the initials of the barista who took his $20). I have no idea if they knew what they were doing but good luck". Excited for free coffee, I head over and order a latte. Barista girl/woman (who I think was origami pterodactyl maker/artist) looks at the "gift card" and asks about a million questions about who bought the card, where did I get it....I don't think this is legit. I explain it was a gift (hence the term "gift card") from my boss, I'm sorry I can't tell you anymore than that. She makes a bunch of huffing and puffing noises and finally says "Well, I tell you what. I'll give you this latte but I think this is bogus, try using it again maybe we'll see". UM, QUE? Sorry pterodactyl origami artist, I am not interested in trying to scam some small local business out of a $4 latte. Sorry, I have better things to do than go to jail for petty theft. read more

I stopped by this AM to kill a few minutes and get a caffeine fix. Because they were training a new barista, the stand opened late. They knew I was waiting and were apologetic for the late open, so they gave me my latte on the house! And it was delicious. Smooth espresso flavor, not too sweet and the right amount of foam. I will definitely come back! read more

Best dirty chai in town! Friendly baristas and great atmosphere. Right below the red door spa. Definitely stop by when you're shopping at the biltmore. They now have another location inside the union shops, also at the biltmore. read more

This place is very cute! While I was in the area, on 3 consecutive days, I tried 3 different coffee shops. This spot would get my second place vote. The barista looked the part, but just didn't serve up the perfect cup. I asked her if a double latte had enough coffee flavor and she thought it did. It was way too milky and the foam for a latte was just not right (I Like the velvety foam). I liked the look of the shop, but didn't love my latte. read more

The Royal kiosk in Union is a splendidly civilized touch. Go up to the window in a relaxed resort frame of mind, as this spot is tiny, so there's only so much they can do at once. But the setting is one of the prettiest parts of Biltmore, the staff is nice, the coffee is srs bsns coffee... so you owe it to the coffee to savor the moment. read more

Wonderful little coffee window in the Union at Biltmore Fashion Plaza. The barista was friendly, and knowledgeable. I ordered a macchiato and he rightly checked to make sure I did not want a sugary monstrosity from Starbucks. The coffee was fresh ground well packed, and the dollop of foam was nice. Would perhaps have wanted a bit more of a "peak" on the froth but that is just being picky. The macchiato tasted smooth... clearly the coffee was high quality (they roast their own) , well packed and the water was hot enough. I did not notice what type of machine they had, but definitely top notch. read more

This place is awkwardly placed and small but the coffee is exceptional. The service was very friendly. And the cold brew served in the bottles is very tasty. The scones were delicious and the croissants were so yummy!! read more

I love coffee and have stopped in at Royal numerous times but no more. I get it, people have bad days but when every visit to a business is greeted with an employee whose attitude appears they hate their job, people in general, or everything, it's enough. I don't care how good the coffee is. I want someone serving me without a sour puss face and who can actually be friendly! With this sort of attitude. This business will be gone like a puff of smoke in the wind. The sooner the better. read more

The brunette girl serving me this morning was horribly rude and uninviting. She never made eye contact with me once, just rudely responding as if being forced to. This is your job, proper customer service is required. As if that wasn't enough the coffee itself was horrid. There are plenty of other coffee shops you should spend your money read more

Mocha paradise! Having an iced mocha from Royal is like your taste buds spending the night at the Ritz while having one at SBUX is more of a Holiday Inn experience - both do their job but there's just something super special about Royal's. The best part is that there are actually 2 spots to pick up this delight at The Biltmore, one inside The Red Door Spa and one inside The Union area (love the local shops in there!). They also have amazing little blueberry fritters- yum. Treat yourself the next time you're in the area :-) read more

I stopped in on my way to work as soon as I read it was open... a delicious chocolate chip cookie with walnuts (I think?) put me in a good enough mood to actually go to work, and my perfect iced latte got me through the night shift. I'm so glad Royal opened up in the Biltmore, that area definitely needs a good coffee spot. And so do I, right on my short commute. :) The space inside is nice, though it's small, I think it is modern and clean and inviting, good for a stop-in and fuel-up, if not a long lingering stay. read more

Royal Coffee bar, located in the Biltmore Union is by far the best spot for a cappuccino. Having all but abandoned planet starbucks, I have settled in to looking for amazing local coffee spots and Royal is easily among my favorite places. Coffee is amazing. All baristas are fully competent and fun to talk to, the music is always laid back, prices are reasonable and hardly any traffic. This could be the downside. Sadly, the Biltmore Union goes though more makeovers than most 40-50 year old Scottsdale cougars. The Olive Mill closed, which served up delicious food and drinks, Frances retired back to their Camelback/Central location, and a few others that I can't recall the names but I frequented them until closed. There has been live music in the past but I have not seen it as of late. I realize my review is eulogizing the Union but if people continue to avoid this gem of a shopping location, Royal could be in jeopardy which in turn, would leave me very cranky. Is there wifi on location? Who cares. One sip and you will sheath your gold iphone 5s. read more

Their El Salvador prepared pour-over was a great cup. Friendly and talkative barista, she knew her coffee.

One of the highlights of my week was swinging by Royal at the Market in downtown phoenix's public market for a fantastic cup of coffee. When I moved offices to the Biltmore area, I was thrilled to hear that Royal was opening a location downstairs from the Red Door Spa. The drip coffee here is perfect. Royal's beans are roasted to perfection in small batches. Then, the beans for each cup of coffee are ground seconds before the cup is made (they aren't pre-brewed and left to get stale in a big thermos). The baristas here are friendly, knowledgeable and actually know how pull a shot of espresso. I don't often get espresso based drinks, but when I do, they are excellent. The Biltmore has long lacked a decent coffee place. Now, with prices lower than Starbucks (on every single drink), and quality FAR exceeding that of Starbucks, the Royal has filled an important niche. Don't get it to go. Sit down and enjoy a cuppa. read more

Sorry, this place just isn't that great They do a pourover drip coffee which is really weak tasting, got the same thing the second time around so they just don't have it. Price is right but if you have to skimp on the grind to get there it's not worth it. A premium location but uncomfortable stools make it a place not to hang around long. read more

I am a frequent Royal customer. They have high quality espresso and coffee, made properly, aside from the cold brew (toddy) which is very weak, unfortunately. They offer almond milk-unsweetened, unlike another very popular local coffee shop I frequent-so bonus points there. The baristas are friendly. The music is good, but not intrusive.
