Went to bury the hatchet next door and ended around lunchtime so as hungry axe throwers, we were naturally drawn to the smell of food and curry next door at Royal. I have only had Indian food (at a restaurant) once before and it wasn't the greatest experience, but this time was different. Place was clean and we were welcomed to sit as a table of six. A few other patrons there, but not overwhelmingly busy. Prices for entree dishes ranged from $12-$18 on average, so we all went with the samosas, garlic naan and different versions of curry. I went with the standard chicken curry and tasted a friend's chicken Tikka masala. Both were really good, but if you prefer more of a creamy texture, go with the Tikka. Garlic naan came out hot and fresh, fairly large as well. Overall, great food and experience for lunch and would def re-visit if I'm in in the area. read more

So she gave me the decision of paying $8 more or her taking them back, so she literally took the package open, grabbed two, and carried them to the back to use again on someone else's order. It's been a long time since I've eaten at Royal Curry, and I'm happy to report it's still excellent! We started with the Papdi Chaat and it was perfect to get our appetite excited, as it cast a wide spectrum of flavors and textures. It was salty, sweet, and spicy along with being creamy and crunchy. We particularly liked the sweet yogurt sauce. No Indian meal is complete without bread, so we ordered a Tandoori Roti and the interesting sounding Peshwari Naan. Tandoori Roti was good; nicely toasted and with just enough ghee to add flavor. The unique Peshwari Naan was really tasty with chopped cashews, golden raisins, and shredded coconut all studded into the bread. Having both coconut and golden raisins, the Peshwari Naan was more sweet than savory, and the cashews gave a bit of crunch and nutty flavor. It also was baked to a nice crisp toastiness. I decided to go for a vegetarian entree in the Shai Panir Burji. It looked like scrambled eggs but was far beyond that generic dish. The cottage cheese medley with onions, peas, and tomatoes was so richly flavored with spices that each bite was so enjoyable. Both the onions and tomatoes gave a nice tangy contrast to the rich cottage cheese. Note this is a dry spiced dish so it was very easy to use either bread as a vessel to scoop up the Shai Panir Burji. My sister ordered one of her favorites in the Chicken Saag and she remarked it tasted just as scrumptious as she remembered. The Saag blend was earthy and rich. The pieces of chicken were very tender and absorbed so much flavor from the Saag blend. Great to see Royal Curry is maintaining their high quality! read more

Was in the area and looking for an Indian restaurant that was open all day as opposed to just dinner hours and was pleased to see it fit the bill, plus had good ratings on Yelp! Ordered vegetable samosa app, naan, chicken Mahkni (regular spicy), and paneer tikka masala (mild). Everything I ordered tasted pretty good. I never ordered chicken mahkni before, so I'm not sure what it's supposed to taste like. It tasted similar to tikka masala sauce. The spice level was not spicy enough, even though I ordered it regular. I do taste some spice, so it's more of a mild for me. Comparably, the paneer tikka masala for the kids had little or no spiciness. Restaurant was dim, with typical Indian decor. Nothing fancy. Owner was friendly, and prices were ok. The chicken tikka masala was delicious!!! However, their biryani was not seasoned well. It is difficult to judge Indian food because each region has their own taste. Therefore, their biryani could have hit the mark on the variation they were going for (memoni, Hyderabadi, lucknowi, dindigul, etc) and I just wasn't a fan. However, I believe northern India is the most common "generalized" region of Indian food sold in America. I'm addition, I got the food delivered and it was still hot and overall decent. The food here was excellent. My friend and I were hanging out the day before our first internship for school and we were craving Indian food. It was a quick 10 minute drive from his place to the restaurant and we were greeted by this guy up front. You can modify your spiciness level depending on your tolerance. I ended up getting the bharta. The basmati rice was really like a cloud to be honest over the warm, oven roasted tomato, onion, ginger and garlic sauce of the bharta. I definitely enjoyed this meal. Nope! Won't go again! First let me say my 13 year old Daughter and I were excited to try this place from the reviews. The Korma was tasty, naan and saag paneer ok, but that's where the good in the review ends. Walking in the place is underwhelming and weirdly decorated with dollar store shiny streamers hanging from the drop ceiling and hardly any lights, and not the warmest attitude from a woman mopping in the back (you can see the kitchen area from the tables). We felt like we were bothering them. We already knew what we wanted walking in, butter chicken, naan, korma and saag paneer. I specifically ask the waitress is the butter chicken white meat otherwise we will order something else, she says yes it is..food comes and looks great but not only is the chicken not white meat, it is sinewy dark meat with tendons and very gamey tasting, we both spit it out in our napkin, it's just something we have a problem eating. I dig through the little bowl and it's all the same meat. It takes us about five minutes to get the waitresses attention (she's back to mopping the kitchen whole the chef stands there) shouldn't that be done when the customers are gone? I guess that is why we were the only customers in the place. I tell her nicely we asked if it was made with dark meat because we don't eat that, is this goat or chicken? She said it's chicken, I show her in the bowl you can clearly see it's small pieces of some type of dark meat..she says, let me ask the chef and walks away. We can hear them talking, chef sounds angry and annoyed. She comes back and says, he will make it with white meat. She brings a dish back quickly, not enough time for chicken to cook through so I was thinking ok maybe that was goat the first time, now we will get yummy butter chicken. Wrong! We each take a bite and immediately spit it out, it tastes so bad. We start to scrap away the sauce to see skewer marks and the unmistakable red from a tandoori. So they took a tandoori chicken skewer which is basically a meatball mixed with spices which they had in the back and put it in butter chicken sauce. It was disgusting!! Those flavors don't mix well. Again it takes us another five minutes to get the waitress to come out front. I explained, this is tandoori chicken in here, she said well you wanted white meat so he made it for you. I said yes white meat butter chicken not tandoori it's a completely different taste. She goes to get the chef. He came out standing over myself and my child with such an attitude as of we annoyed him! Then he has the audacity to tell me that is how it's made. I said no butter chicken is simmered in the sauce it does not have tandoori skewed chicken in it, I explained that we would not have ordered if the waitress didn't lie to us and tell us it was made with white meat. He said it's a mix of meat but if you want white meat that's how we make it, he shrugged and walked away and CHARGED us for that atrocious food, even though we clearly didn't eat it. They should be embarrassed to serve this food. It's fine, we paid and tipped but will never again and if you want to know what kind of meat you are eating, I suggest you don't either. No one should pay hard earned money for crap mystery meat food! read more

Royal Curry is a great Indian place... food is good and quality of the meat is standard. Pricing is reasonable for this type of cuisine, and food is usually ready fairly quickly. Owners are friendly. My favorites to get are tikka masala (either chicken or shrimp, sometimes I've gotten fish but I don't think the quality of the fish is that great tbh), the mixed meats, samosas, biryani... the lassi drinks are great, especially mango. Naan bread is good, sometimes a bit more burnt than I like though. The only thing I don't really care for is the way they make their raita... it's different than any other place I've had it, and not in a good way. Not sure what it is! Hooray I found another Halal place for me to visit when I am craving Indian food! I ordered chicken tikka masala which comes with white rice. AMAZING!!!! Then I also had to add some roti to that as well because roti is life! The place is very nice on the inside and the staff are very sweet. I ordered my tikka with medium spice and it was perfect. The chicken was SO tender...I need to figure out how they do this because I didn't want to stop eating it! The sauce was also the perfect combination of butter and tomato sauce and other spices. I don't have anything bad to say about this restaurant. I initially came here because I like Indian food and it's right next to my gym. Both times I was there I was just about the only customer, but I attribute that to this place being new and people being unaware this place is open. This is a small, family run business and the first time I was there the owner was my waitress. She took her time to talk to my friend who has never had Indian food and make suggestions for what he should order. She also gave me a suggestion on which dessert I should try (Gulab Juman for the win!). I hope this place stays longer than the previous restaurants because I have more of the menu to try. read more

Royal Curry has some of the best Indian food in the area, hands down. My brother in law is from West Bengal, and for the past few years I've had the luxury of knowing what home cooked Indian food should taste like! My sister would be making it herself, but Red Curry it just minutes from her house and the food is so yummy, when I visit her we often find ourselves calling up Red Curry! Forget cooking she says! haha. That said, I must start off by saying that this review is a Take Out Review. :) I have to say, that although I'm a meat lover, I think Red Curry really does best with it's vegetarian dishes. My favorite is the Panir Tikka Musala and the Bhindi Musala. This is served best over rice, or you can dip some of the delicious garlic naan bread in it to add some taste more texture. The bharta is another great choice if you like egg plant. I, personally, HATE egg plant, but Royal Curry actually makes it edible, which is a HUGE accomplishment haha. It's a favorite dish of my sisters, served well with Naan or rice. I was not a big fan of the Yellow Dal Tadka, but one of my best friends is Gujarati and I think I'm just spoiled by the way he cooks it. India is a big place, so of course, some recipes will be sweeter than others, etc. I would definitely try the Yellow Dal if you have never had Dal, it's best served with rice. We also ordered the Mixed Grill as an appetizer, this was non-vegetarian. The chicken breast, leg, shrimp, and the lamb kabobs were FANTASTIC! I actually recommend anything lamb from here... it's that good. They give you two sauces, one green and red. I cannot remember the names, but the green is cilatranto based, and goes very well with the lamb. The Red sauce is sweet and sour, and I like it on the chicken dishes. Oh, and definitely try the Bhaturas. They are fried, but when they remove them from the oil the get all puffed up and taste like a PASTRY! Have you ever had those funnel cakes with the powdered sugar you can get at the Seaside Boardwalk? It kind of reminds of that....minus the powdered sugar. I feel full just from writing this review!!!! haha. As far as service, I cannot comment on the dining in experience, but Royal Curry has never failed to mess one of our many take out orders up, and they are extremely accommodating. You can request certain dishes to be low sodium, mild, spicy, or extra spicy, etc., you just need to let them know ahead of time. I am a big fan of Indian food. I've been to scores of Indian restaurants and have enjoyed a number of home-cooked Indian meals. Royal Curry is absolutely, and consistently, the best restaurant of its kind. They specialize in North Indian cuisine. I have been there about 10 times. We mostly do take-out, though we ate inside twice. I went with my husband and his family (they are all from West Bengal), and they all agreed that it's the closest they've ever come to home style Indian restaurant food. We usually go for the vegetarian options, but splurged twice on the delicious chicken items. For veg, my favorites are the Bangain Bartha and the Paneer Tikka masala. I also highly recommend the Paneer Bhuna and Chana Masala. As far as the chicken dishes go, though they are all delectable, I love the Chicken Karahi. This weekend, I plan to try some of their lamb and fish items. Also, the entire staff is delightful! The place is family-owned, which shows in the pride they take in the cooking. Each dish is clearly made from fresh, high quality ingredients. Be sure to specify your spice level preference. They will cook your order exactly to your liking! It was a little weird. But I walked up to the counter and ordered my food... maybe I should have sat down first? I don't know. No one greeted me until I got to the counter. I don't know very much about Indian food and she asked what I wanted right away. I have no idea what any of this, I told her. So she suggested an appetizer while I looked at the rest and asked what it was. So I settled for the veggie samosas. I know I also like chicken tikka masala so I ordered that with some garlic naan bread to be safe. I sat down at one of the tables and waited for my food. Once my food came out, I was in heaven. It looked delicious and I couldn't wait to chow down. The veggie samosas came with two sauces, a sweet and a hot "green" sauce. I don't know what that is, but it was great mixed with the sweet sauce. Then on to the chicken tikka masala. I got it with medium spice because I don't know how their spice chart works. It was the perfect amount of spice for me and the sauce was rich with flavor. I draped it over some rice and got to business. It was so delicious that I dipped my naan bread into the masala sauce. I will add that not one customer came in, in the time span that I was there. Sucha a nice gem in the famous town of Matawan! Went in there for lunch & luckily weren't many people there but the owner was so very attentive & nice to our needs that she actually suggested a lunch special where we could get the appetizer & naan for free if we'd just order the curry! Now that's a deal. The naan is Huuuugggeeee! Food tasted so great! Their paneer is out of this world. Of course their Ambiance + Service + food = (5 stars)! My parents came from India last year and their exact words - "after a long time we finally had some food that tasted like that of our motherland i.e. INDIA"!
