I was specific - she didn't listen - a horrible haircut - don't go to Kookia unless you want your head miserably shaved short. The kid specific haircut places where you get an airplane chair, cartoons, bubbles, seventeen distractions and somehow still leave wondering what happened to the fade. Then you try regular barbershops and sometimes the music is blasting, the whole place feels like you're interrupting a music video and bringing a little kid in feels like you've made a terrible parenting decision. Then there was the final straw, realizing the place we had been going wasn't keeping its clippers and equipment as clean as I wanted. I was done. And then I found Top Shelf. Oscar cuts both my son's hair and mine now and at this point I just hope the man plans on working until we're both old because I have absolutely no interest in beginning this search again. He's that good. I'm annoyingly particular about my hair. I can show Oscar a photograph, explain some half formed idea about what I want and he gets it. The beard work is meticulous. The lines are clean. And what he does with a fade almost feels wrong to call a fade. It's more like a seamless blend where you can't really figure out where one length ends and the next begins. Even better, it grows out well, which is something you don't appreciate until you've had enough haircuts that look fantastic for four days and ridiculous by week two. But the thing that really sold me was watching him cut my son. Same patience. Same attention to detail. Same standards. He doesn't treat a kid's haircut like the junior version of the real thing. My son gets an actual haircut, properly blended and finished, while still being in an environment where he can be comfortable. That combination is unbelievably difficult to find. The shop itself hits the balance too. Comfortable without trying too hard. Friendly without being performative. There's parking in the back. Everyone I've encountered has been welcoming and while I can only personally vouch for Oscar's work, I've watched the other barbers cutting while I'm there and there's clearly a standard across the shop. And everything is clean. I probably notice that more than most people after my previous experience, but I appreciate the hell out of it. I don't know what took me so long to write this review. I arrived on time and Zoe was finishing up another haircut. I asked to use the restroom & she said they didn't have one and that I could go at the pizza place across the street. I remembered from my last visit where care & detail was put into my cut that the next client was waiting around 15 mins & I figured this was just within a grace period window. I go to the pizza place and about 10 mins pass because I needed to order something and Zoe calls me telling me she's been waiting and we are almost 15 minutes into my haircut now and that they run "a tight ship". I was already feeling uncomfortable by the way she spoke to me on the phone but I went anyway because I had a positive first visit. When I arrived they both made me feel rushed and unwelcome. I wanted to know where to put my pizza which I only ordered so I could use the restroom & they told me not on the couch but also not where to put it & finally I gestured to the counter and they seemed ok w that however inconvenienced. Then Zoe tells me let's just get started and I feel rushed into the chair and it was up higher so I couldn't easily sit on it and she said "ok we're already off to a rough start. These are $5,000 dollar chairs" and then proceeds to demonstrate to me how I should sit in the chair. Perhaps the chair is common knowledge but to position yourself as a queer inclusive barber shop and then to speak to me so condescendingly. I was neither accommodated for using the restroom nor for adjusting the seat nor offered common customer facing professionalism. After I began to cry & look visibly uncomfortable she offered an apology and that we should talk about it but i didn't feel comfortable with that after being made to feel so uncomfortable in the space by both of them. I wish she would have reached out afterwards. I had a good first experience and wanted to find a place I could get gender affirming haircuts. So disappointing and discouraging.
