The kitchen is ALWAYS clean, Abdul (the owner) takes great pains to make sure customers are comfortable and safe while serving some of the freshest food in town. I made a delivery order and got the butter chicken with naan. Every time I order butter chicken from other restaurants they always come with rice. This order from Royal Guard did not come with rice. The butter chicken and naan was good overall, but I had to wait for my rice (that I made at home) to cook when I was just ready to eat my whole meal. read more

Had to see a special Doctor nearby, so after, we looked for something nearby that wasn't going to take us far out of our way to not make the long trip home longer. Love Fish and Chips when they are GOOD! There were a LOT of favorable ratings on the Fish and Chips, so we both got an order. The Fish was really good and the Chips were remarkable. Really happy with what we got for the price. Most places really don't get this right. Then as we were getting closer to home, the MSG started kicking in. Husband ALWAYS has a bad reaction, and even I felt it as well. That taste it leaves in your mouth hours later. YUCK. Salty Metal. Just know when your order there. MSG is used. Not like the old days when everything was made delicious with the right mix of ingredients, spices and techniques ONLY! The woman that helped us was VERY nice. I wish we could give it a better rating, but that would require a change of the ingredients. We are what we eat. I tried this place because they said they had halal meat. So I got wings, fried chicken, and fries. The wings were okay..I asked for spicy but it wasn't spicy at all. But still had a good taste. Their fried chicken was good also..just average good. Their fries are more like potatoe wedges which I didn't mind at all cuz those were delicious. I would definitely recommend the fried chicken and the fries. They took a while to get my order ready so I would suggest ordering ahead of time over the phone or something. Found this gem randomly while on a roadtrip and in need of a pit stop. I am a fool for fish and chips and think of myself as an aficionado on the subject. And their fish and chips? Amazing! The fish was perfectly fried and moist and flaky on the inside. The chips were perfectly done and addictive. My husband decided to get the the lunch buffet of indian food offerings and he was also pleased. This place is pretty bare bones and it seems they do a whole lot of take out orders (there was a steady stream of people in and out while we were there). OK.... so I've educated myself a little since my last visit. First, the owners are not Indian. They are Pakastani. Hence all the Pakastani dishes on the menu (like biryani - it's not Indian!). During our last visit we noticed the cook making the naan "on demand" in their clay oven. Wow - this is impressive and explains why it tastes so fresh and hot. Their naan is amazing! Can't wait to return to try some more Pakastani dishes. The portions are large, almost enough for two - and very reasonably priced. The chicken tikka masala was about $10 for a dinner portion. Usually CTM is $15+. Not bad. Definitely worth checking out. read more

Strangely wonderful fish n chips. Came here after playing tourist at the garden of ideas. This place had amazing fish n chips! Don't get the fisherman's platter because you like variety, it's a sad platter that isn't worth it. Just get the normal fish n chips plate. It's a better deal and flavor, the other pieces in the fisherman's platter just isn't worth it. Call ahead for pick up! The inside has such a creepy, Undecorated, sterile vibe of all white. Make sure they get your order right. Somethings don't come with rice if you get naan, and they expect you to pick if you're getting the curries. read more

The outside building and decor are definitely old school but the food is done well. Their fish and chips are dishes we always get. Fries and fried chicken are very tasty. Ohhhh Yummm! Brilliant to combine seafood and Mediterranean food. Scallops were delicious and an idea texture. Both the Cod and Haddock were excellent. I'm betting today's catch. Probably the best Sweet Potato Fries ever. The Beef Shish-kabob had wonderful flavor as did the rice. Side salad was crisp, fresh, a perfect compliment to the rest of the meal. If you're looking for great Indian food, don't come here. I hate to be so harsh, but I just got takeout from here and I am so not impressed. The high point for me was the rice, really delicious - heavily seasoned, yum! My husband and I tried the butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, and the palak paneer. The butter chicken was a little on the dry side and the sauce was just not great. There was a strong unpleasant flavor that I couldn't place. The chicken tikka masala was better, but still not great. It's like the flavors just didn't come together. It tastes like tomato and ginger and cilantro - not what I'm looking for in that dish. The palak paneer was the best dish of the three. Good flavor but the paneer didn't seem all that fresh - a piece or two were inedible. There was a large piece of hard leaf in there (bayleaf?), which I had to spit out. All three dishes were topped with shards of ginger and a decent amount of cilantro which I didn't love. But I really disliked the naan. It's topped with sesame seeds and too thick - so not a fan. read more

Royal Guard, holy guacamole--actually, that's like the only thing they don't serve here. I would eat at the buffet every day if I could afford it, but the prices here are phenomenally fair in comparison to other Indian/Pakistani restaurants around. Fish and chips and chicken tikka masala with a side of veggie pakora and fried oysters? What are you waiting for people!? The korma, tikka masala, and other "traditional Indian dishes" are not traditional US Indian-style in the way we 'Muricans are used to--i.e. light and creamy, a ghee-based thick-sauce blend, with a couple paneer or boneless chicken cubes tossed in. This place more blends vegetables and regular oil with wee amounts of yogurt, and uses spices--and heat--liberally, all to fantastic effect. Royal Guard is much more meat-focused, meaning, dishes are literally packed with meat. And ohhh the meat. I've had beef, chicken, and lamb here and all are always so fresh I need only a spoon. There IS some oil separation, which sometimes accounts for a thin layer over the meat and sauce in your bowl. This is actually a preparation technique that assures the dish is cooked properly--NOT "grease." That's why they give you naan (or rice). Soak that stuff up now! Last time I ate here was takeout, and not only was the packaging great, with sauces on the side and silverware, I realized on the way home I had gotten naan instead of rice with my dishes (you must choose or naan is default). I promptly turned around, and when I admitted my mistake, I was given two heaping containers of rice, free, with a smile. Every time I come in I'm greeted with hearty professionalism. I do kinda wish the decor were a little nicer--white tables and bolted-in swiveling red plastic seats--but who eats with their eyes? Try the buffet first if you're timorous. I did a yelp search last night looking for an Indian food recommendation and was surprised to see a fish & chip shop at the top of the list! Oh **thankyouthankyouthankyou** for turning me on to this place! To echo the praise of other diners the butter chicken, tandoori chicken, samosas, punjabi chana and garlic naan bread are instant addictions. When we walked in my immediate impression was "wow, so clean" and "omg what smells so good?" The food was so fresh my daughter and I were in heaven. Glad I took the advice of other reviewers and was ready for it to be chilly in there--but it's NO BIG DEAL. Can't wait to return so my husband and son can get a proper Brit fish & chip fix while the girls hit the buffet. I love this place, bottom line. I've been here multiple times, have tried different dishes every time I go and the quality of the food is always top notch. They used to be located in the old food court at the Danbury Fair Mall, but I'm pretty sure they only sold fish and chips without separate Pakistani dishes being offered (don't quote me on that, I could be wrong), but now they're located on Main Street across from Taco Bell and seem to get a lot of customers, especially when I've sat down and eaten there. As stated, I try to get a different dish every time I go since I'm still quite new with Pakistani cuisine. I've had the Chicken Tikka Masala, Beef Curry, and Chicken Biryani with obviously the naan they serve. Everything was absolutely delicious and full of bold spices that bring out the best in each dish. I believe they cook the naan in the back, which explains why it tasted so fresh and warm when I got it. The most recent time I stopped by, I even took a shot with the fish and chips to see how great that dish tasted and totally wasn't disappointed. The restaurant isn't huge, but it doesn't need to be. They seem to specialize in a lot of take out since there's always customers coming and going when I've eaten there. There's a buffet section on one side of the place where I've read is open during lunch time and it's a steal for how much food you can get. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to experience it, but I will eventually. The people working there are also incredibly nice and run everything themselves. I've never seen more than three people working in the kitchen cranking out orders, but they do a job well done. Totally recommend this place. Now I may be a little biased. I grew up going to this place when it used to be in the Danbury mall over 8 years ago ... So it always holds a special place in my heart (and stomach). The smells greet you in a way that you know what you're about to eat is something special. This place has THE best fried oysters and whole belly clams you can find at a restaurant that isn't on the water. They only source them if they are fresh, and do not refreeze them ... So availability is sometimes spotty. In terms of taste ... Think amazing blend of spices that you'll crave again after you eat it. They may not have spent money on decorative fish in a fish tank, little waterfalls, or other decorative extras (other than a very practical flat screen TV). They have spent their time and used their love in preparing for you what they would prepare for their own children -- fresh, tasty goodness that'll make you feel right at home. As you show off your pinky ring, pet your chihuahua, and admire your own smugness ... do not come here. This is not fusion. This is not for the fashion or "foodie" fad obsessed. This is not for those who think it cool to indulge in social niceties while looking for celebrities and snapping a few selfies. If you actually like objectively good food ... That involves a carefully selected and executed blend of spices and seasonings ... Along with good sizable portions ... Then this place is for you. I have driven by this place many times and thought nothing of if. Then tonight a friend of mine said he wanted fish and chips so we went. It was then I discovered that fish and chips is only part of what they are. They also agave great halal Pakistani food. The smells as I entered were great. I had the tikka masala with nan. The dish was wonderful. The tikka masala was infused with a fresh aromatic bouquet of herbs that was amazing. The nan was made fresh. The ambiance is a bit sterile. Very clean but lacking interest but the food is well worth it. read more
