Just stopped in for a quick bite to eat. I'd seen a social media post about this fairly new restaurant and was excited to check it out. The staff is very friendly and Joyce, the bartender, is excellent. The bar area is very comfortable and conducive for making new friends. Strawberry-guava margarita - absolutely delicious! Nice balance is sweet and sour and the guava flavor was phenomenal. Tuna poke tacos - these have to be the absolute smallest tacos I've ever seen in my life and, for $17, I was a bit taken aback. If you go here get the oatmeal pancakes. I tried a friends, and they were off the charts. The chicken and waffles had chorizo gravy and honey and was really good too. My eggs for my breakfast were cooked wrong, so maybe don't get eggs unless you want them over easy. Their coffee wasn't great either. The biscuit was fluffy and filling too. Our server was great for a big group during brunch hour, we were never left looking for him or wanting anything. It is super cute. Not sure why the reviews are so low! We were in town visiting my family, and we made a reservation for 8:30pm. The restaurant has a cozy, living room-esque vibe to it. Our server, Antoine, was super nice and gave us lots of recommendations. We had been traveling for a long time, so we both just opted for a burger and fries. Our server was attentive and the management team took time to check on the quality of everything. It was very good. My Cuban sandwich was probably had the easiest thing to make at the table, other than the kids grilled cheese, but the meat was delicious and pickle juicy. The grilled cheese was too big for a kid's meal so, I helped out with that too and found it excellent. This once Old Town institution is obviously under new management or the original owner went off the deep end. I think it's new management because the changes to the place are stark and NOT for the better! We were welcomed with the words that grate on me like nails on a blackboard! "Do you have reservations?" NO, we've never needed reservations in the past, and I don't see lines of people trying to get a seat here. Literally, the dining room was half empty when we walked in, asking for a table for 3. The new menu is a "my way or the highway" set of limiting choices, and it's clear from the waiter, that there are NO SUBSTITUTIONS! Oh, and if you want TOAST with your omelette (and there are only two omelette options on their brunch menu), you'll have to bring your own toast (I'm joking, but wouldn't it be funny if you did bring your own toast?). Overall, the food was nothing to write home about. I had the western omelette with smoked cheddar cheese and NO TOAST! Remember, oh, and remember, NO SUBSTITUTIONS so it's smoked cheddar or NO cheese at all! I ordered a side of "thick cut bacon" and even it was overly seasoned and then undercooked. Just the way nobody in their right mind would like it! Except maybe the #%@& FLIES that must have made their way into the dining room from the outdoor dining area that was recently added. Oh, and for four slices of bacon they charge $9. I've said this before and I'll repeat it in my own defense. I hate leaving bad reviews and I try desperately to keep an open mind when restaurants chance course, but I don't like this new restaurant. I don't like their pompous attitude and the limiting menu and the taste of the most basic things. I hadn't been here in years....WOW! At first I went back for Sunday brunch because some friends wanted to try it...it was the best brunch I've had in ages. The staff were fantastic, the options quite diverse, and everything I tried, I really enjoyed! It was all delicious....and great coffee as well. Then, more recently, I brought some out of town visitors for dinner. We tried so many different things! There was a set menu with amazing options...things I've never seen...all of it, delicious! I also tried a fried cauliflower sitting on a bed of pilaf rice with a curried chickpea sauce....WOW! It totally changed my mind about cauliflower. And then the desserts....again amazing. I focused my attention on the banana split....unlike any I have ever had. It was a light, fresh, perfectly caramelized banana with delicious vanilla ice cream on a bed of crunchy deliciousness with whipped cream and cherries. The place is perfect if you want to eat something delicious while enjoying conversations because it isn't the typical Old Town loud pub/restaurant. It's got a cool, somewhat funky vibe. Relaxing. I pretty much get shrimp & grits 80% of the time when I go to brunch, so I've eaten my fair share of S&G. When I say that these were easily one of the bestttttt s&g I've had, I'm not exaggerating. Not only did they give a generous portion of shrimp and sausage, but the combination of flavors of the Cajun seasoning, cream, and corn was just perfect. It wasn't too spicy, or heavy, or thick/thin consistency. This dish was the epitome of comfort food without the heaviness. We also got the steak and eggs and blueberry pancakes which were huge and fluffy with the XL berries. We will definitely be back. Finally stopped in to see the changes at Royal. It's definitely gotten a facelift but still feels nice and comfy like before. You know what also didn't change? The lovely service. I just went in for breakfast and it was the big Royal one. If you need to get some carbs in, this will do it. I really liked the texture of the pancakes even though it was a little browner on the bottom than I'd like. I'd come back again for them though. So, right now, it's a 3-star for me because it's A-OK and I didn't feel I needed to run back there even though it's SO close to me. I'll definitely try it again for lunch or dinner and maybe something there will keep me wanting more. Came here on Sunday for Mother's day brunch and had a lovely time. First, the restaurant has free parking- a very pleasant surprise! Although small, we were able to get a spot right away. My future mother in law arrived early and they immediately sat her and gave her a complimentary mimosa with a rose! For starters, we had the honey corn bread and brisket empanadas. These empanadas stole the show! The brisket was so tender and delicious. My MIL never had empanadas or brisket before and was in love haha. The corn bread was perfect too! It had almost like a pudding softness in certain parts and the honey butter went perfect with it. For just starters, we were thoroughly impressed. For entrees, I got the biscuits and chorizo gravy, my fiance got the chicken and waffles (which also had chorizo gravy) and my MIL got the omelet with spinach, mushrooms, cheddar, and brisket. When her omelet arrived she realized there was no brisket. We informed the server who apologized and said she mistakenly didn't hear her say brisket and offered to bring out a side of it. She quickly brought the side of brisket- which had more brisket than probably would've came in the omelet! The biscuits and gravy were so good. I loved the chorizo gravy. The biscuits were also massive. It came with eggs, I got em scrambled and home fries. My fiance really enjoyed the chicken and waffles. The chicken was juicy and delicious. We were very happy with our meals. For drinks I got the royal 75 (their take on french 75), and their special strawberry aperol spritz. Both of which were really good. Our only criticism we had is my fiance said his bloody mary wasn't very strong and was just okay. Overall, we had a lovely mother's day brunch. The food was delicious and the service was good. They also had a bench outside the restaurant decorated with pretty fake flower arrangements for people to take pictures! This was our first time coming and were thoroughly impressed. We made a reservation, and we are glad we did because the restaurant was pretty busy! Our server, Zhak, helped us navigate the menu for my gluten allergy and had some great recommendations. We ordered the street corn deviled eggs, my wife ordered the chicken and waffles, and I ordered the oatmeal pancakes and a vanilla latte. The food here is incredible. The first time I was here, I came with as friend for breakfast. I had a crispy delicious salad with fluffy eggs. My friend had syrupy fluffy pancakes. I had to come back. I was shocked/delighted to see that they had a fabulous nicely decorated outdoor space too. Came with two friends visiting from out of town and the stroganoff that my friend hand arrived in this beautiful bowl that you could definitely see the bottom of when he was done. Hubby had this sweet and savory bbq sandwich that I kept going back for more. Next time I'm ordering either of those two dishes. If you go,check out the decorated bathroom. Popped into Royal Restaurant on a Sunday morning and boy was I in for a treat! I would recommend getting reservations as it is a very popular location on the weekends, but luckily the hostess was able to find us a seat as a last minute walk-in. They had an are indoor dining area but as well as a pretty large covered Outdoor eating area. We sat outside and the weather was perfect. We got a coffee, French toast and the oatmeal pancakes with a few sides. The food came out very promptly, hot, fresh, and with so much food we were both unable to finish it though we wanted to keep eating. Nestled close to Old Town Alexandria is Royal Restaurant. I believe they recently made updates to the restaurant with a new patio. They have their own parking lot and there's also lots of street parking options. The service was good and their smash burgers were divineee. I could've eaten 5 of them.
