Aside from it being a gorgeous evening, we chose to eat outside because the inside was set to the lowest temperature I have ever encountered in a restaurant. What the... Service was excellent. The dinner menu has a bar food/Latino emphasis. We both ordered the Meatloaf Melt. This is an outstanding and delicious sandwich. Stopped by with a friend, and was thoroughly impressed by the kind service and large portions. We tried the chili cheese fries on the happy hour menu, along with the stroganoff and smash burger, per our server Christine's suggestions. The seating is spacious, and I liked the touch of plants around the restaurant. Sunday=Brunch We ended our weekend getaway for our anniversary with brunch at Royals Restaurant in Alexandria, Va. We should have booked a reservation with OpenTable but we did not. They were super packed with limited space for a waiting area. We were able to get a table at the bar and immediately when we sat down the gentleman bartender greeted us, took our drink order, gave us menus, etc...Once we were ready to order, he took our order, refilled our drinks, and just provided superior customer service. We got to chat with him about his favorite drinks to make and I wish I would have got his name. He was awesome, never had to ask for a refill, checked on us to see if we needed anything, just all in all great customer service. Food The food was delicious, fresh, perfectly seasoned, and in plentiful portions. If I'm ever in Alexandria, Va again this will be my stop for brunch with a reservation of course, lol. Ambiance The restaurant's aesthetics were super modern, with lots of beautiful lighting. Parking A small lot is available but there are limited spaces available. I've been here a few times in the past few months and been disappointed regularly Food is lackluster. Got chicken schnitzel which was stringy. Tried on a different visit the carrot and macadamia dip. Way too salty. The bartender is great, though my nonalcoholic drink was too sweet (she corrected) They used to have half price wine every night but now it is only on Wednesday. Had brunch at Royal, food and service both excellent. Hadn't been in years (since the prior management) and SO glad I found myself back there. Nice corner spot in Old Town, have been going by it for years & decided to try today. Super friendly greeting & conversation by the Hostess. Seated quickly in nice dining area near bar. Plenty of room inside (seating not over crowded). Easy to read menu, with unique breakfast selections to more traditional. Our waiter was also doing bartending duties, I think somebody was late. He was friendly and answered our questions about the menu and seemed to be handling both his duties well. My wife and I had some more walking to do so we decided to split the breakfast burrito. It was plenty for us and even felt we had a little room to try one of the delicious looking cakes displayed on the bar. Burrito could have been a solid 5 - I loved the concept, the flavors were there, the cheese wrapped around the tortilla was delicious with a little crunch. The green sauce around it was awesome. Only complaint was that it was served on a skillet and expecting a little suzzle, but it was not really warm. If warmer, it would have been a 5 ++. The cake looked amazing, but was a little dry, frosting was delicious. My wife barely ate any so I tried to finish, I cannot waste any cake, not even dry cake- LOL The additional help arrived during the meal, she was also great. Coffee was hot and stayed full. Our burrito was brought out on separate skillets which was really nice of them as we did not expect that. We will be back, want to try the New Jersey dish. It was my friend's birthday, so of course we needed weekday brunch! The Royal Restaurant in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia has the best service. Everyone there is extremely sweet and accommodating. The shrimp and grits were full of flavor with plenty large shrimps. It was different than other shrimp and grits I've tried, better. The burrito was huge and delicious. Went to Royal this am for my son's birthday. WOW was I disappointed. First off the changed the menu to use a lot of fancy words. I can't say that the prices have gone up, but the quality and quantity has certainly gone down. Our server was super sweet and that is the reason I gave them 2 stars, I would have put one! 1) food was slow coming out, took over 30 min from the time we ordered 2) some of the dishes came out wrong, when I advised the runner that it was wrong, she just smiled and put it down. 3) one of the sides was missing 4) the 2 eggs (Looked like 1) where cold 5) The $4.00 Side dish Pancake could be eaten with one bite. I asked the runner who brought the food out about the "Silver Dollar" pancake, and she just smiled,ed and put it down. With all this being said, I will not return to Royal Restaurant. Very decent breakfast with an old school sort of cafeteria feel. I ordered home fries, blueberry pancakes, grits, and a bowl of fruit. The pancakes were standard pancakes, nothing to dance about. They were good. The home fries had onion in them, which was so good, I wish more places did that. The bowl of fruit was just cantaloupe and pineapple, but it was freshly cut, as we had to wait a bit for the kitchen to cut it. The grits were good, too, but the waitress kind of gave a look when I asked for some American cheese to go in them. I didn't order any eggs or meat, so I can't really comment on those items. The service was alright. Nothing to really complain about, but nothing great either. The prices were average for the area, in my opinion. About $14 for an American breakfast with eggs and sides, but my pancakes were only about $10. read more

I had the most delicious brunch at this restaurant a couple of days ago. I also had the jalapeño cornbread. I'm not typically one for spicy food, but it was just the right amount of kick. This restaurant is a hidden gem. The menu is interesting and the food is quite flavorful. I cannot say enough about the service. Our waiter might've been new because I heard another server complimenting him on what a good job he was doing, but, assumptions aside, he was very professional, friendly, quick, and he knew the menu well. Our party of 6 had a delicious dinner last weekend at Royal Restaurant. Highly recommend the Parmesan French fries! Our server Antoine (sp?) was great - answered all our questions and made sure our aunt's cocktail was just how she wanted it. We learned that the restaurant is offering a generous discount to any furloughed federal employees (50% off, excluding alcohol). It didn't apply to us, but it made us appreciate them even more! Went here for Sunday breakfast/brunch with the family. The food was over all good. Their steak and eggs is very pricey for what they actually give you. My son only got 4 small pieces of steak for the 26$ that was paid. The burgers were very good and a reasonable price. My daughters scrambled egg kids meal was a great portion and also came with fresh fruit. The service was terrible. The server charged me extra for my daughters bacon because she didn't know how to put crispy for the bacon. She did ended up removing it when I showed her that bacon was included in the meal and that was the excuse she gave me. My husband asked her for another soda and she never brought it so we ended up leaving after paying. We ate outdoors which was nice and quiet. Over all I give it a 3-4 stars, the service can always make or break a restaurant experience. Don't consider coming back. read more

I have repeatedly tried to order crispy bacon here. It's never cooked thoroughly enough, and today was no different. I even specified to the waiter (who was obviously not interested) to make the bacon crispy. It arrived half cooked and pretty disgusting. I didn't feel like making a fuss, but the next time if I go back I'll have to specify blackened or charred bacon because they clearly have no idea how to cook bacon. I'm not overwhelmed with their menu either. The old royal had a much better breakfast, not to mention the Sunday buffet which they got rid of. The fake flowers everywhere are not classy, they look cheap and are so obviously fake i dont enjoy being surrounded by fake flowers in an outdoor patio. Time to do some major improvements, including the service and the food. read more

Royal Cafe is definitely a nice hidden gem in the Alexandria area. Over the years, I've only visited on Sundays to enjoy their all you can eat buffet but they do offer a regular menu for breakfast/lunch/dinner throughout the week also. The service here is amazing! Stopped by Royal today after picking up a family member from local Amtrak station and they wanted to have brunch. All day brunch is a hard to find. We were sat immediately. We both enjoyed the Royal Breakfast. The food was good, came out fast, and the service was thorough. I also ordered an espresso martini, which was great.
