Just a great hotel all around. Get what you pay for and this pretty much has it all. Ambiance, service, food and location.

If you can legally call this place a hotel, it must be one of the worst hotels ever. This used to be a great spot in Manhattan. Twenty years ago, the last time I stayed here, it had a vibrant lobby lounge, great food, excellent service, and a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, those days are long gone. We picked a terrible weekend to visit New York because of all the sporting events happening in the city. Hotel prices were through the roof. When I looked up this hotel, I remembered it fondly, and the rate was about half of what everyone else was charging, so I booked it. When we arrived, we were honestly in shock. It was horrific. I can only assume the hotel was sold because it has been turned completely upside down. There is absolutely no service. No food. No water in the room. No room service. No coffee. No amenities. The room itself was disgusting, dirty carpets, a worn out bed that sagged in the middle, and an overall feeling of neglect. Everything looked tired, dirty, and poorly maintained. Even the elevator...How dare they call this dump a hotel? Calling it a motel would be an overstatement. Needless to say, we walked right out, crossed the street, and booked a room at the lovely Sofitel New York. Luckily, they had one room left. read more

The hotel exterior and lobby is very beautiful. Probably one of the best in the area. I do wish there was more lights in the lobby. It looks a bit dark and hard to see where to go. The elevators are tiny. I think they're going for a specific mood hence the dark lobby. I like that how very spacious the lobby is. The location is good, in Midtown close to many shops and landmarks. The price is not too bad for the area but if you want a really nice hotel, I would not bother booking the Standard Rooms. For $300 plus per night, just get another three star hotel and you pretty much get the same amenities except you pay less. I say this because the Standard room is nothing special about the Standard Rooms compared to the rooms of three star hotels. The couch is old. The furniture is beat up. I was very surprised to find that in my room given what they were charging. The bathroom looks nice but again not worth the price hike. read more

Easy check in process. Front desk person covered all the necessary details of our stay and what additional charges (resort fee) there would be. Room was simple and comfortable. Good shower pressure and hot water. Only USB ports (2 ports) on one side of bed which was a bit inconvenient but we managed. Otherwise bed was comfortable and room looked and felt clean. Only a one night stay for us. Actual hotel does not have a restaurant or bar but there are several with on the same street within the same city block. read more

It's my first time at The Royalton Hotel and it didn't disappoint. From the entrance we were greeted and assisted by Neil, and helped us with our luggages. We were early for the check in time and the room was not available yet but they allowed us to leave our luggages at the hotel. Front Desk Staff Stefano was awesome as he assisted us in expediting to make our room ready for check in. He went above and beyond to assist my mom in storing my mom's medicines at the fridge while we wait for our room. The following day, Stefano and Johanna had a fridge delivered to our room. The room is clean and spacious, have a great view, a small desk, clean toilet. The location is walking distance to Bryant Park, Empire State Building, Times Square and a lot of nearby shops and restaurants. Highly recommended. Check it out! read more

Beware: This place is nothing like the pictures! The photos online are completely misleading--likely taken back in 2006 right after a renovation that hasn't been maintained since. This establishment barely qualifies as a hotel and is in serious need of a full gut and remodel. To begin with, the entrance doesn't resemble what's shown online at all. Even our Lyft driver had trouble finding it due to the lack of signage. Upon arrival, we were met with a long staircase--no ramp, no assistance, and no staff in sight. The dim, unwelcoming entryway looked more like a back door, made worse by a peeling paint job and poor lighting. As soon as you walk in, you're hit with a strong, unpleasant odor that lingers throughout the entire property. The interior is so dimly lit it feels like they're either missing lightbulbs--or perhaps trying to hide the dirt. There are no restaurants or functioning bars in the building, despite what you might expect from a hotel. There's also no visible maintenance or staff presence, making it clear that upkeep is not a priority here. Navigating the building is a task in itself. The journey to the elevator includes uneven flooring and awkward transitions that make pulling a suitcase a hassle. The elevators are incredibly small--we had to turn sideways just to fit ourselves and our bags. Once we reached our floor, we were greeted by more musty air, stained and ripped carpets, damaged walls, and a generally neglected appearance that resembled an abandoned school basement. The room itself was the final straw. The carpet was loose, dirty, and not even properly installed along the baseboards--resembling outdoor carpeting without any padding. The furniture was outdated and grimy, and the walls were visibly dirty. Sitting on the couch felt questionable, and there was no way we were going to sleep in that bed or use that bathroom. We checked out within 15 minutes of checking in. That's how bad it was. We couldn't imagine spending even one night there--let alone four. Despite the "no refund" policy, we were prepared to walk away from the full cost just to get out of that place. They claim to be a 4.5-star hotel, but this place isn't even worth half a star. Royalton New York in name only. We had stayed at the Royalton since it opened in the late 80's through the 90's, and it was always an excellent experience. On a quick trip to NYC with friends to go to the theater, we decided to check out the Royalton after all these years. The lobby has been completely redone, which was very different but nice. Once past the lobby, other than painting the hallways and new carpet, absolutely nothing else has changed in the rooms. The same furnishings, which have definitely seen better days, were present. The carpet in our room was worn and stained; the shower door didn't stay closed, which created a huge mess, and the television, though it worked, got little to no stations. The hotel doesn't have a bar, restaurant, or coffee shop. There were no coffee makers in the rooms, not even glasses or paper cups. Sadly, this once very important hotel has definitely seen its better days. read more

Solo female travelers beware. Anyone can access the room floors - elevator doesn't require a room key. This hotel is old, outdated, dark and scary. Stayed for a business trip , they booked it obviously. Looks OK from the pics but all the 5 star reviews have to be AI or a scam. It looks ok from the outside and lobby. Rooms are disgusting. I pitty the fool, and guess who's the fool in the case? ME!!!! I booked off a 3rd party website that said this hotel was 4 stars. It's literally a 1 star. They are so dated it's pathetic! Old, ran down, & dusty looking. They're in need of major renovations. This place looks like a hotel that was nice in the 80s/90s Era, and it's definitely no longer. They don't have any amenities in this place. No restaurants or bars or small kiosks. The 2 stars are for the courteous workers, and they didn't have roaches or rats, thankfully. But this place is trash, honestly. I wouldn't stay here again. We paid $1000 for 3 nights, and the motel 6, I'm sure, would've been newer. The owners should be embarrassed to own this place. They would take calls while serving you or interrupt what you say. 1-2 of the staffers are okay, but it was also incredibly hard to hear them through the glass and they sat very far away and spoke really softly. I do appreciate that they checked our vax status before giving us gym access. +++++++++++++++++++++++ R O O M +++++++++++++++++++++++ // Bedroom There is a bed with two circular recessed shelves that have the remote and the phone, but can't fit very much else. Maybe just your classes. Next to the bed there is a side table, but also this WEIRD WEIRD PROTRUSION from the wall that actually looked dangerous. It had long pointy metal wires sticking out of it. But really, STRANGE. There was an oddly placed desk in the middle of the room that kind of blocked one of the closets. There was nowhere else to put it. TV is on the side and can be angled but still doesn't fully angle to either the bed or the couch so you still have to sit awkwardly... There was a sofa at the end of the room. It was okay. Just another place to sit. It was sandwiched by two closets. One with drawers and one with hangers and the ironing board. There needs to be hooks because there's not enough space/hangers to put both big coats and blazers and jackets. There were no cups or ice bucket. Nothing! Nothing to even put my toothbrush in. The room smelled like smoke...bleh // Bathroom This is very narrow. There's one side with the sink and the other side is like a vanity with a metal stool. Its pretty tight. BATHTUB IS NICE! It's HUGE! It is a big perfectly circular tub, it can fit two people. But the bath tiles are a terrible dull green color and gives the water a weird color because of the reflection. +++++++++++++++++++++++ A M E N I T I E S +++++++++++++++++++++++ // Lobby The lobby area is really nice with comfortable couches and beautiful fire places. It looked like a cool place to sit and chill because the rooms were so uncomfortable. // Elevators Elevators are tight and tiny and the doors are narrow but there are 3! I don't think all of the elevators are Ada accessible. // Gym Gym is nice! It has two pelotons, some treadmills, free weights. It is open 24/7 with a water fountain! You need to show proof of vaccination before you can access the gym! Was prepared to give 3 stars, but my wife reviewed the charges when we got home and discovered a hidden daily "resort fee" as well as double charges for taxes. Like so many others, we found the staff to be super nice and friendly, and generally the hotel is clean, but the hotel is a bygone, tatty shell of what is depicted in the photos. Threadbare and desolate lobby. Room cushions are crushed and flat. Lighted mirror has a short circuit that tripped the GFCI. Television "woke up" by itself after we were asleep. Torn curtains/shears. USB charging ports that are broken. No coffee. I'm willing to stake that most people at a "resort" expect a gym, a restaurant/bar, perhaps a pool, certainly a cup of coffee in your PJ's. It was a marginal-to-fine stay, but it is certainly not worthy of hidden "resort fee" and double charges for taxes. The only thing "resort'ish" about it is that the elevator, hallways, and rooms are cruise ship sized. Check your bill and make sure you review the photos with a critical eye! read more

Spackennahboom! My wife & I went for 3 days. She had a work meeting with her company. We came to NYC while it rained kinda hard; the place is an old hotel, but very warm & cozy. It does have a great staff that keep it very sanitary & clean. Every person in the staff is very helpful & always willing to help. The rooms vary from size & time line. Ours was a nice cozy queen size bed. Mattress could have been better. Retro update with bath, shower, fridge & update retro trim was nice. Lobby has a warm fireplace & elevators are minis?! They work well though. So far, so good it's been 24 hours... Basically our 3 day stay wasn't eventful bc it was raining & Mae had work 8-5 each day. read more

I stayed here for a staycation Labor Day Weekend. I checked in at about 11am and even though it was well before the standard check in time of 3pm, they had a room available and let me check in early which was amazing! This hotel is conveniently located in midtown, close to Grand Central, Times Square, and lots of subways. The lobby of the hotel is gorgeous and feels very ornate and fancy. They have automated double doors as well which adds to the convenience when entering and exiting the lobby. I had a room with a queen bed. The room was clean and a decent size, given that all NYC hotel rooms are generally small. The room also had a good sized couch. The bathroom had two large mirrors and lots of free toiletries. The highlight of the room was the giant round tub with disco ball-style glittery tile. Great for a nice, long soak! I ordered takeout and forgot utensils and cups and they were able to quickly supply everything I needed at the front desk. The front desk and concierge staff were also extremely welcoming and attentive. An interesting note about this hotel is the hallways are narrow and the elevators are tiny. The Royalton is a nice hotel, but lacks amenities. I'm sure the place was booming back in the day. The lobby is very dark and cozy with a large fireplace, nice little spot to just sit when you come in from the cold. The staff is very friendly. My room was clean, the beds were comfy, good pillows. The bathroom was fine but there's no counterspace for your things and the bathtub definitely needs to be redone. It's a great location, right by Bryant Park and Times Square so lots of restaurant options. No refrigerator in the room, no microwave in the room, which is unheard of in 2024. We had to go to the bodega a block down to get waters and snacks to keep in the room in a cooler. After reading the reviews, I knew their restaurant was no longer open and they didn't have snacks for purchase. The red flame diner across the street is very good for breakfast. It was a great location for us to set up for the Thanksgiving parade. read more

Like an aging supermodel, the Royalton hotel used to cut quite a figure in the go-go '80s but is now just a gravity ravaged vestige of her former glory beating back the cobwebs. On any given day (back in the day) you could find the bulimic stilettos of the Condé Nast fashion army staring at their romaine and A-List luminaries like Bob Dylan mumbling through his lunch. Now, it's a shell. No restaurant, bar or any extracurriculars to take your mind off your tiny, dated room. The old girl is still there mingling with the far too late to the party guests but she is now well past her sell-by date. Paging Dr. Botox. It was disappointing. I made reservation by mistake thinking I was at the other Royalton. The Lobby was a ghost town as the bar and lounge are permanently closed. The very small Eleveators were shaky. TV had only really basic channels. The Tile floors were chipped. The room had a disinfectant smell upon entering. The Rug had seen better days. No soap dish (think about that).....BUT The Woman at front desk on ck in was a pro. The bell men were fantastic. They actually took us one by one to a cab accross the street in pouring rain when we were checking out. Really above and beyond. Place is Clean and really quiet considering the location. This hotel is a shell of its former self. There is no longer a bar nor a restaurant. The elevator is barely functioning. There's no valet nor parking on-site (even though both are advertised online when booking). On top of it lacking these amenities, they still have the AUDACITY to charge a resort fee. Comical. Before arriving, I had TERRIBLE service from the front desk staff. Because of that interaction ALONE I wouldn't stay here again. For the price, you could stay somewhere MUCH nicer (Mondrian, Staypineapple, etc). The only saving grace, and the reason I gave two stars instead of one, is the balcony in my room. It was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. I didn't utilize housekeeping, so I can't comment on that. The room was neat when I arrived, though I don't know that I would call it clean. The sheets were dingy and smelled like dust. They use vinegar in their cleaning products, so the whole bathroom smelled like vinegar. The bathroom features are nice. The design and decor (especially both shower heads) are unique. Probably the best thing about this room = the shower. The proximity to everything is a perk. Very close to lots of landmarks. In short, this hotel was crème de la crème about 30 years ago. However, now: it's barely functioning. I wouldn't be surprised if it closed in the next few years, or got bought out. Especially considering the piss poor service. ***The doorman was the nicest. Very attractive also... Overall: 1.5/5 - Would not recommend and would not stay again. read more

I stayed here for my bday weekend and wanted space and convenience. Let me tell you this establishment did not disappoint from start to finish. Also you should know that you have a beautiful gem representing your brand with the receptionist Janay welcoming your guest. She was amazing we came to the royalton because the previous nights accommodations weren't exactly what we were expecting so finding this hotel was definitely luck and it was the best kind. Janay made us feel welcomed and valued our entire stay and she helped us navigate our time in the city with a smile on her face.. BRAVO ROYALTON hold on to her tight. This lovely, slightly hidden gem is an absolute treasure! This was my first time staying here and I will definitely be staying there again. The staff were very helpful & friendly. From my check-in to my check-out and in-between, the staff were wonderful! The hotel's style is 1930's/1940's glamour and I was all in for that! Located between Times Square & Grand Central Terminal, it was the perfect location for everywhere I went via the subway (New York Botanical Gardens, Broadway shows, Lower East Side, Financial District). Due to Covid-aftermath, the bar wasn't open, but that's not a problem when you're in New York. The room was comfortable and roomy enough for this solo traveler. I chose a room with a bathtub and that was glorious! I need that bathtub in my home! I didn't get to check out their gym, but next time, I will. The Royalton was fantastic! read more

WOW! fabulous hotel. the ROYALTON is exquisite. Lobby is something to see. Check-in was not warm nor professionally greetable. :( Rooms are 007 James Bond style. Fantastic tub. Well sized tub. Room sized is spacious - nothing like a Holiday Inn nor a Hampton hotel room. Much more room. A very comfortable stay. Staff can be a bit discriminator. Racism should not be an issue here - but it is. If you are not WHITE then the staff, at times, may get to you when they feel like it. They might be slow to address your issues. They talk to you differently than others. They look at you differently than others with that hawking look being anti-warm. The staff NEEDS to be retrained on hospitality, professionalism, being cordial and to be aware that racism in the work place is a FEDERAL VIOLATION. read more

If you are looking a hotel near Times Square, this is a pretty classy spot for a fairly affordable price. When I walked in, I was blown away by the wooden decor and pod like seating areas where catching up with friends while enjoying a couple cocktails type of place. Check-in was quick and easy, and my room was even ready by 11am. The elevators are tiny, 2 ppl and luggage is all that fits, but no biggie. The king room was very spacious! It has a nice coach/seating area to relax on. The way it was decorated reminded me of being in a boat. For those that need a make-up room, these rooms had mirrors on 3 sides. Getting ready and doing my hair was so easy since I could see the back of my head (love the simple things). The bed was a nice mixture of soft/firm. Huge TV has and adjustable mount. A huge closet. But no iron could be found. The bathroom def needs some upgrades. Noise from the outside is also loud, especially for us because we had a room next to the elevator. Overall, loved staying here. Centrally located, and easy to get to various MTA lines within a 10-15 minute walk. For the price and the vibe, it checks the boxes read more

This place could be amazing....location is great. The hotel itself was apparently sold during covid to a company that has zero interest in it. Dank, dark, dated. Where there once was two thriving bars and a restaurant, now is a ghost town. Completely shut down. Poor people working here seem depressed and miserable. We asked about restaurant and bars and the guy at desk blamed the new owners. Our room is depressing as hell and ran us $1k a night. I would leave in a heartbeat but it's holiday season and everything is sold out. No coffee, no water, no doorman, No bell staff. It's so sad. Clearly new corporate owners have no concern. 3.5 stars. I stayed at the Royalton for a 4-night business trip as it was the closest hotel to my company's NY office. I found it to be comfortable and felt accommodated during my stay. I would agree with everyone here on the point that this hotel could use big update and some additional amenities (glasses in the room, coffee maker, more hangers, etc.). The carpets and furniture are pretty worn down and dated. Besides that, I thought that this was a decent stay in the city given the price. My room was large and very quiet, which I was concerned would not be the case as I was right next to the elevator. I especially appreciated the staff here. Upon arriving, my room reeked of perfume. The front desk was swift at getting me a different room without any bother. I was greeted every time I entered the lobby. On my last day, the front desk held my bags while I went shopping, and gave me access to an office suite with a bathroom so that I could freshen up, repack my bags and head to the airport. The bellhop was very efficient at getting me a cab to the airport as well. read more

This was unfortunately not a great stay. I stayed at this hotel this weekend for one night. My friend and I booked the hotel at a rate of 316 for the night. Upon checkin a few things occurred: 1) the entrance is blocked by two men having a discussion, in street clothes it seemed like we were in the wrong location turns out it is the hotel and the one man says this is the hotel just come in and then eventually offers to help our bags but that part was just awkward because no signage and the employees were not clearly identified. Also there was no ramp so for someone who has physical disabilities like myself this was not accommodating 2) at checkin the person at the desk tells us the rate we booked online was a government rate, however after explaining this several times that we had no idea it was a government rate, we just booked the room at the rate displayed online, they insisted on charging us the higher rate which was over 550 for the night. This to me is not fair considering the way the rate is advertised online 3) the lobby: the middle of the afternoon we arrived at 3 pm and nothing was open, the bar had no one attending to it it was completely empty also at night absolutely nothing happening... on a Friday night?! 4) the room: the room was spacious and the bathroom was decent...I will give it that but there was hair on the door knob globs of yellow hair... there were barely enough plugs for us to plug in our phones to charge and utilize the heating pad that I needed. The bed sunk in the middle horribly and for someone who suffers from spine issues this was not ok. I did not sleep. No water or coffee machines in the room. Again if we had paid a cheaper price I would accept this as "you get what you pay for" this is completely unacceptable in my opinion. We could have stayed at a much nicer, more conveniently located hotel for the same (higher price) and gotten much more. read more

Bring your credit card, Benjamin's and be sure you have friends with a wad of cash too. Not cheap, not a bargain by any means but for the perfect pre-dinner cocktail- get in here. My bf and I booked our stay at The Royalton through Hotwire. It was quite affordable for the location. The lobby was dark and intimate, I loved the details in the decor. They also have a connecting restaurant/bar which was lovely. -Location: Right next to Bryant Park and is close to a few metro stations down the block. Times Square is also a couple blocks away. -Our Room: 1 queen bed facing the street. It was much more spacious than I expected considering we were only a couple blocks from Times Square. Our bed was so comfortable, we never wanted to get up in the morning. I also loved the standing shower and the waterfall shower head. There's no fan in the bathroom but they did provide matches and a candle. The toiletries were actually pretty nice too. I appreciated all the little details in our room/bathroom. -Service: From the moment we checked in and out, and everything in between, the customer service was great. The cleaning staff was always greeting us in the mornings. Overall, I was impressed with The Royalton. My bf and I enjoyed our stay here and we'd definitely recommend it. read more

Pros: The staff is nice and very, very accommodating. Bathroom is clean and modern but small. Cons: I felt like I walked into the Twilight Zone. The other reviews are dead on. Desolate, dusty, cranky elevator to the top. Weird, dated room layout. Modern shower but no shelves hardly to put your stuff down. TV is to the side and pillows in back so can't watch TV unless you move from the back pillows at an angle. Odd, Odd, Odd is the best to describe this place.
