Little Gem of a hotel in midtown. While the room was a little small, a couple of items were missing upon arrival. Luggage rack, glasses in the bathroom and the keys initially didn't work until reprogrammed. So that would have made this review a1 star for sure. So you ask, how come you are giving it 4 stars? 1 person, Christina at the front desk saved the day and the review. First and foremost, bright and cheery! Definitely a welcoming smile. Next, she fixed the key issue without hesitation. Next, when I told her about the luggage rack and glass, she summons the maintenance man who immediately handled the luggage rack situation. She then retrieved a couple of glasses from the bar. Lastly, Dumb me, I forgot my cell phone charger. She immediately made hers available and while I read a couple of coffee table book in the lobby area, I got all charged up. Overall the hotel was clean and quiet. I've been travelling to Manhattan almost every week for business for the past 5 years, and have stayed at various Hilton properties in the Midtown area. This however was my first time staying at the HGU, and at a Hilton SLH line of hotels in general. As the "Small Luxury Hotel" moniker suggests, this hotel is small. The rooms are also very small. The establishment has a boutique hotel vibe with the furnishings being in the artsy/retro style. I suppose that's what accounts for the "Luxury" part of the description. However, the rooms being almost as small as the much cheaper Motto Times Square doesn't feel very luxurious. Breakfast being served in the attached takeout coffee shop with heavy customer traffic isn't very luxurious either. Overall, I did not feel that a stay here didn't justify the price paid. For a boutique hotel feel within the Hilton Portfolio, I think The Martinique (Curio Collection) or The Bernic (Tapestry Collection) nearby are better choices. If you're looking for more space, Millenium Hilton One UN (also nearby) has standard rooms that are literally triple the size of the standard room at the HGU. read more

They charged me for make up on towels like what?!?! I really liked this hotel. I booked it for my team to stay and then again for my son's graduation and was planning on being a loyal customer for personal and business travel for groups. They charged me $140 for makeup on the towels. Are towels not to be used to wipe things off your body? I have never experienced anything so blatantly sexist at its best. And when I shared how absolutely inane, they stood on business for pennies and lost my business forever. DON'T GO!!!!! and if you do, bring your own towels, or use tissue to wipe your body. i go to NOA everyday for coffee. today the new general manager accosted me about not standing in the hotel entry area because only GUESTS can be there. She was hostile and out of line. the vibe there is now unwelcoming and despite the excellent bakery this place has a bad customer approach. Get a GM who has people skills! read more

This placed smelled like an exterminator sprayed my room for bed bugs before I checked in. The smell was so bad I had to check out 2 days early. The fumes were nauseating and made me dizzy. I would STRONGLY discourage anyone from staying at this hotel but especially for business travel. The real problem is the front desk messed up my receipt, charging me for mini bar items erroneously and could not get them off my receipt. If you travel for business, you know how important it is to have an accurate receipt and management will not be able to updated receipt if errors occur. You will be on the hook for the stay. I was. Management does not care at all if their mistakes cause a problem for you and do nothing to help. They refused to call me and very slow to reply on email. I would recommend to stay at any other 10 + hotels in that area that will treat you with dignity and respect. read more

We came down with COVID, and we had to cancel both a train and a flight without any issues. United and Metro North both reimbursed us without question. I'm not sure why this has been more complicated with HGU. we made an effort to cancel the reservation two days prior--speaking both with Hilton customer service and the front desk directly. However, the representative I spoke with at the property was unable to process the cancellation at the time. Plus the hotel's website does not display a cancellation policy. As a follow up to my original review, I neglected to mention that Salina Galan also fraudantly charged us for "destination fees" of $25/night PLUS TAX. We booked through Booking.com and the total paid to them INCLUDED taxes and fees. She charged us these fees vindicatively AFTER we questioned her about the safety and health code violations in the room. We have emailed her twice and even the owners of the property and no response has been given. I honestly do not understand how this place has received any positive reviews. Aggressive Staff, Privacy Violations, and No Accountability from Management (By Selina Galan) I stayed at HGU New York (a Hilton/SLH property) from July 18-20, 2025, and this was, without exaggeration, one of the most upsetting and unprofessional hotel experiences I've ever had. Despite booking two back-to-back nights, I faced repeated issues: 1. Privacy Violations On the second day, housekeeping entered my room multiple times without knocking, even though I had declined service. They claimed I needed to check out, even though I had confirmed my second reservation with the front desk at check-in. I was never told I needed to check out and back in -- this lack of communication directly led to confusion and serious breaches of privacy. 2. Confrontation and Hostility from the Housekeeping Manager When I went to the front desk for clarification, the situation escalated into something I never expected at a Hilton-affiliated property. I was trying to explain myself -- stressed and speaking in my second language, English -- when the housekeeping manager, completely uninvited, inserted herself into the conversation between me and the front desk agent. She was accompanied by another housekeeping staff member, stood too close, raised her voice, and aggressively accused me of being "verbally aggressive." At one point she said: "If he hasn't paid for the second night yet, check him out and I will get his stuff." And when I asked in disbelief whether she was trying to kick me out, she replied: "I don't want you here." Even the front desk staff tried to calm her down, saying "It's okay, I got this," but she refused to disengage. One objective truth remains: Why did the housekeeping manager insert herself into a front desk matter, confront a guest, refuse to leave, and escalate the situation -- all while accompanied by another staff member? This was not a misunderstanding. This was a clear failure of professionalism and boundaries. 3. Management Response -- Blame the Guest The general manager, Selina, later responded but offered no apology and no denial of what happened. Instead, she echoed the same hostility with a polished version of the same message: "Our hotel may not be the right fit for your future stays." This response made it clear that the staff were protecting one another, rather than taking responsibility or considering the guest's well-being. I no longer believe this hotel is capable of resolving issues impartially or professionally. 4. Technology Failures & Frustration This hotel is also not integrated with Hilton's app or Digital Key, unlike every other Hilton I've stayed at. I had to go through manual check-in/out, the elevator was incredibly slow, and I was even asked to repay a transaction that had already gone through, leaving me feeling distrusted. Bottom line: HGU New York did not meet Hilton or SLH standards in any regard. I felt targeted, unsafe, and completely unsupported -- as a paying guest, and especially as someone speaking a second language under stress. I have an upcoming Hilton Grand Vacations holiday booking in Hawaii and am now seriously reconsidering that stay. I hope Hilton and SLH take this complaint seriously. I have never been more disappointed in a room since I last stayed at a Motel 6 many years ago. The HGU association with the Hilton brand is a disgrace. The room and a closet are so tiny that we can barely turn around. No place even to hide suitcases out of the way. No doorman or assistance with luggage. My first time booking through Hotel Tonight app was a dud. I guess they gave me the crappy room in this hotel. Let me say this hotel is gorgeous but very tiny. I knew that coming in but man the bed takes up the whole damn room. We were put in a King room with such little space to even move around. If you have luggage this hotel definitely isn't for you. The room was freezing cold! So we called the front desk and the maintenance guy came to "fix" it meanwhile bringing a space heater. He said he would reset the heat and come back and he never did. The space heater helped but really wtf? $100 a night and we need a space heater? I think the guy knew the heater didn't work. Another issue was hot water. Took a shower the first night and the water was warm not hot. The room decor is beautiful and so is the bathroom but it's definitely not worth me coming back here again. I'm very confused about the restaurant situation here. I went in expecting what I saw on their website and Instagram page. Instead, I was handed a menu that had a lot of things crossed out on it and had the name of the cafe out front on it instead of "American Bistro". I ended up paying $77 for a poorly made cocktail, French fries, and a "dip trio" that was actually only a duo because they didn't have the third option, which even in this economy is absolutely WILD. Also, the binder in the room that tells you all that the hotel offers is out of date and advertising two restaurants that aren't even here. I felt it was Incredibly overpriced for what was available to me. The hotel itself seems fine...but I would love an explanation about what's going on with the "restaurant" here. Buyer beware! Lodging on East 35th street fell through on Monday 4/28/26. Desperate, I made a last minute booking for 2 nights and walked over to the hotel. No breakdown of room rates was given. After leaving at 5:30a at checkout, no printout of the bill, understanding the needed the check the Minibar use (told them I didn't use it). When I received the emailed bill, the room rate was $100 more on the second night (Tuesday) than Monday. There was a mysterious charge of $50 for "other" when I called to question the charge, was told it was a normal fee from the city (it is not). When I emailed the hotel asking what the charge was for, reply was "standard resort fee" to cover hotel cost of "free WiFi" (apparently not so free) and luggage storage, local calls "print services" & gym access. None of this was disclosed at check-in, and typically hotels don't charge for this. Very disappointing. No transparency of rates charged. Won't go there again. read more

As a first timer coming to NYC, I read 30 plus reviews until I finally booked here. The valet / staff was very nice and accommodating. After checking in I was told certain amenities in the hotel were not available due to covid-19. We were only staying for the night and did not mind. The room was gorgeous and the space of our hotel room was amazing, my boyfriend said it was bigger than his apartment in his college days when he lived in Manhattan. The decor of the hotel was out of this world! Stunning and chic, we will be back and next time I hope the amenities are open, a girl can only hope. I blame Covid lol. read more

This hotel was beautiful! I didn't have a chance to explore it, and it's a smaller nyc hotel, but it was perfect. Also, it has a bathroom with a real door!!! Omg! I was so happy to finally find a hotel room without that barn door for a bathroom. This door actually closed and locked. Also!!! It had a bathtub! This hotel is a prewar building. So although the tub was a normal size tub like any nyc apartment would have, i was just happy to have one. The room was beautiful. It was a nice size, king bed was very comfortable. The tv was a bit small for the room i thought. It had more than enough mirrors, the lighting was a little dim, and it has a window that can be opened. (A window in the bathroom too). All in all, i would return here. The rate wasn't too bad, and it was nicely decorated. Also, check out is at noon!! Score! I called and asked for an extension for check out and the accepted free of charge! Score! I will definitely be back here for a staycation when needed. I'm writing this half-way through my stay. I still have 2 days left. Unfortunately some rooms such as mine (200) are next to a pipe that makes an incredibly loud noise and won't let you sleep. I have read many other visitors who encountered the same problem, and all of them mention that the hotel reception refused to change the room, which was my case. Very good location though , and the cafe (Noa, a café) is delicious. But you can find much better options for the same price. Also, rooms are incredibly old and not in a fancy way. STAY AWAY! They sold my room to someone else, didn't bother to tell me, and had me walking around the streets of New York after midnight looking for a hotel. --- I booked a three night stay at HGU Hotel. When I got there, I was told that they had sold my room and that I would be spending tonight "at another hotel nearby". (Apparently, they didn't think it was important to tell me about this in advance, despite my having paid for a reservation several days prior, and despite the rep admitting that they'd known this all day) We went walking around looking for someone to help at this "other hotel" where I was supposed to stay for a night and then pack back up and come back to HGU. I asked if there was any compensation for delaying my checkin for an hour while we sorted all of this out (again, after midnight) and for the hassle of having to unpack and then repack and go through checkin all over again the next day (assuming that they didn't decide to sell my room to someone else again), and the hotel employee said he would comp me the first night.... ...okay that sounds good, right? Except - get this: HIS BIG "CONCESSION" FOR MY HASSLE WAS THAT HE WASN'T GOING TO CHARGE ME AT HIS HOTEL FOR A ROOM HE'D SOLD TO SOMEONE ELSE. I still had to pay for my room at another hotel. I stayed here for 3 nights a couple weeks ago. The only reason why I picked this joint was that there was a sale and also, it helps that it is close to Penn Station (yeah, I can't seem to avoid Penn whenever I visit NY) and it's also a plus that this is by the fun K-Town (32nd). I arrived at round 9 am and there was no room, so the worker checked in my bag and I left to go around. I arrived back at 3 and there was still no room, so I stayed inside the empty lounge/bar area and after 10 minutes the room was ready. My room was at the 3rd floor and in true NY fashion, the floor was small and the room was small as well. However, I liked the fact that it had a queen bed, a flat screen TV, a decent sized bathroom, and a magnetic charger base for phones, etc. They also had a iPad mini for the guests to use but I had my own so I didn't bother. The bed made the room cramped but it was fine since I barely went to the right side anyway. Besides my view was a back alley so that was fine. There was a fridge too and it was crammed full of stuff, so I was unable to put my bottle waters in there. The facilities was good although the shower as hard to regulate, it was either really hot or cold and even though it was set in the middle it was not at the setting I preferred. Oh well, it was all good. They had the dispensers for soap and shampoo so no individual soaps. They did have a hand soap and two bottles of lotion. There was an issue with my AC during the first night as it leaked and the worker came in there immediately to fix it. It did take 45 minutes or so to get that done however that was not an inconvenience to me, maybe to others it will. It was handled properly and I commend the staff for that. The area around the hotel is pretty decent and one night I came home at around 3 am and I felt safe. Also, there was a restaurant downstairs but not sure if there were eaters as I didn't see any customers there at all. Since there were so many joints to eat at in the surrounding area I didn't order from the hotel. I'd like to stay here again if the price allows. I recommend it! read more

Very very sorry but all I am allowing my self to give is 1 *. We stayed here with my wife for 11 nights, booked direct with the hotel, no agencies or online providers. Price ? per room per night? 300 $!! no breakfast included. So there goes minus 1 * because 300 $ per room per night for 11 nights? for this hotel? it is a robbery. The room is literally a queen bed and hardly space around it, mind you we booked the most expensive from the rooms they offer apart the suites, cause we wanted some space. So room size there goes your next 1 * minus. Noisy very noisy on the 7 th floor we were checking if a car came to our room, so loud it is, we never stayed in a room with worsted isolation. Don't plan to sleep unless you are having hearing problems. They offer a can of coffee, that's it not a cake or biscuits no Sir, a can of coffee in the lobby where you can hold your self coffee free of charge. On Saturday morning I went 15 Minutes after 08:30 in the morning and they told me: " it is only until 08:30" ... really guys? By the way no Tee and coffee facilities in the room! well there goes the next * minus. read more

I had a wonderful recent stay for almost a week at HGU New York. The staff was so helpful and accommodating before and during my stay. I called a week ahead to request a queen deluxe with a view and was very satisfied with the room view and layout. I traveled solo, so it was just enough space for me. The desk was nice alongside the armoir with a safe, which was so easy to set up a code and leave my valuables during the day when not around. I was able to order room service from the hotel's restaurant (Super Franc) as well as from the hotel's provided carrier, Butler. Both were delicious! The bed itself was very comfortable and the bay windows were so lovely to sit by and read/work from. Now, if you're familiar with NYC, you know that virtually anywhere you stay you're going to have a difficult time finding somewhere quiet as people are out at all times of the day. Since a room with a view was a priority, I knew I'd hear some noise throughout my stay but the noise really didn't bother me and wasn't too loud to ever wake me up. Plus, I was able to see the Empire State Building light up and see the lights turn off from my room which was really cool! Overall, I had a great stay here and would absolutely recommend to my friends looking for a prime place to stay in the city! read more

Due to Covid most amenities (lounge, rooftop, Bar, car service ect.) weren't available but the staff did their best to make our stay comfortable. We went here for New Year's Eve and it was pretty fun. Besides the outrageously overpriced alcohol, we had a great time. The ad was kind of misleading. Tickets were $40 per person and there's an open bar for an hour starting at 9pm. But when we went to order a drink we find out that they only offer one drink for open bar which was this tequila based margarita tasting drink that was kind of gross. We didn't even finish the one we started with. Then I went to order a vodka soda and they charged me $17.45. Why the extra 45¢ I have no idea. But that was it. The DJ was alright. He kept everyone on their feet. All and all a fun New Year's Eve. Except for the misleading ad of an open bar because that's not true. They should have been more descriptive and specific saying that there's an open bar serving one gross tasting tequila based drink. Bartenders were nice. Ambiance was nice and dark with candles. Felt completely deceived by the nice website. This hotel was such a disappointment. I booked a king deluxe and it was tiny like most people said. Dark too. The app and site offered a pillow service that we never received. The room wasn't serviced or clean after our first day so I called room service to deliver fresh towels at least. They never delivered them. We made sure to call everyday after that to get our room cleaned. They advertise alkaline water online but when I asked for additional water after our 3rd day they said only two were free on your first day of your stay. Kind of ridiculous. I had a difficult time reaching anyone by phone (every line had a busy aignalso tried their app messenger that is supposed to connect me to a staff member but that didn't work. They never responded. I had also booked this hotel because it advertised 24/7 room service. That doesn't exist. They shut down around 10 or 11. When I complained about this staff said they need to remove that from their site. Next time I'll just book with a large chain hotel instead. At least you know what you're getting. Was it NY? Was it me? I booked at this hotel for a work trip as it was a reasonably priced mid-town hotel. I will sandwich my statements now with my experience. First, you must understand this is not a high-end hotel. It advertises and shows as a boutique hotel. And that it was. The quaint restaurant was dark and the drinks were overpriced. As you walk past that, you meet the front desk staff, who are friendly for NY standards and accommodating. The elevator felt cold and cramped. It was not updated at all which does raise the hair on the back of your neck stepping in it for the first time. The room itself was small and dark. While it did let a lot of light in at night, it also didn't let you know it was morning. This hotel was extremely close to the Empire State building and subway stop. For me, it was not my cup of tea. But for those that like something very boutique'ish, this is perfect. read more

I had a fantastic time at the HGU New York! The hotel was easy to find and is close enough to all the fun things, but far enough from the craziness of Times Square. Upon arrival I was warmly greeted by the front desk receptionist Nicole, who was able to provide me with an early check-in to my room. From that moment onwards, Nicole was incredibly accommodating throughout my entire stay, and did this with the utmost kindness and enthusiasm. The room was clean and my king sized bed was comfortably stacked with plenty of pillows of different sizes and firmness. The water pressure in the shower (compared to different hotel experiences) was strong and the heat was constant. My only note of improvement would be to update the first aid kit. On one of my final days I asked a different front desk attendant for a band-aid but he couldn't find one. I truly enjoyed my stay at the HGU hotel and will be sure to revisit in the future. read more

Stopped by yesterday for a drink at the 1905 HGU Lounge. Beautiful and well decorated spot. Drinks were good. We had the French Mule and the Le Piscine. There was some live music starting at 7 pm and it was great. Very good service. This place was very welcoming from start to finish. read more

I came to the HGU as a Manhattan resident looking to get away from an apartment full of people for the weekend. Upon arrival, I was given no warning of lack of cable or that my room was above the rooftop bar. Mind you, I paid normal rates, which normally encompass the fee of basic cable. After calling the front desk, I was given a the response "you should have been told this I'm sorry" I checked out about an hour later, called to ask to be reimbursed and the hotel refuses. I understand it's challenging times for all, but this lack of strong customer service is enough for me to deter my loved ones from using this hotel when visiting. read more

Had a great time a few months back at this aesthetically pleasing hotel located in Midtown NY. When I first got there, I had an issue with a double booked room during an expensive holiday weekend. My eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw the bill. The front desk didn't seem helpful, but I explained my situation to their manager on a weekend evening and he fixed the situation. The peace of mind alone was worth an extra star. The room was gorgeous. A nice hall way, bathroom, and bedroom layout. The only problem is that the iPod dock speaker was made for a much older model than what's currently on the market. The lounge had a nice layout and fireplace. A good selection of drinks as well. The only issue I had was that when I was trying to redeem my free drink (which I used on a french mule), the bartender that night had an attitude and tried to dissuade me from collecting it. I was having an amazing night leading up to that moment, so I didn't make an issue out of it, but it was highly concerning. I told him to make the drink even with the missing mint and he did it begrudgingly. I wish I could rate the Hotel and Lounge separately. The staff was very accommodating and very nice. Everything in the room worked fine, however, it was small and could only accommodate two people at the max. The location is great and within walking distance to the Empire State Building and lots of different restaurants to try. It's suppose to be a boutique hotel, however the hall reminds me of an old, old apartment building that needs to be updated. The lounge area is nice and I know it has a rooftop bar, but we never got a chance to explore it. I just think overall, it was a bit pricey for what it was. read more

This review is for the LOUNGE at HGU. We went for the New Year's eve celebration and walked in without a cover charge. The place was very cosy with couches and ottomans everywhere. There is a stocked bar and the cocktails are very good. They let us sit anywhere without a bottle service. There was good music, a plasma to watch the ball drop, and their staff was extremely nice. The cocktails were $18 which is $4 more than other places like this but remember no cover charge and we could grab a seat wherever we wanted. There was music and party favors too. A nice touch was they passed around some hors d'oeuvres during our time there. The food was quite good from what we could judge from those appetizers. So definitely going back for food later. It was the perfect evening for us. Low-key-ish for NY and great music and drinks. Definitely going back for birthday celebrations and such with a small group :) read more

HGU New York - Hotels Near Me - New York, New York

I understand the concern regarding COVID-19 makes things difficult. But me and my in-laws stayed here for one night out of our five we intended. My in-laws sheets on their bed had stains and hairs on their fitted sheets as they walked into the room. When talking to the desk regarding the issue, we were told that we would have to change the sheets ourselves because housekeeping was unable to do so because of the virus. Why should we have to fix their mistake? I understand not going into the room regarding housekeeping, UNLESS it is requested by the guest. Also, I left an item in my room after checking out. I called the desk that evening, around 5pm. I was told since housekeeping was gone, I would have to call the following morning when they are there. Only between the hours 10-11am. My husband was having surgery, I was not going to continuously call this hotel. The desk attendant would not take down my information to pass along to check, and let me know if my item was retrieved. Both my room and my in-laws room AC was not working properly, and was super warm. The mini-fridge was room temperature at best. My room had a RUSTY soap dish. And don't get me started on the tiny room we had. Completely unprofessional/disgusting for a "4-Star" hotel. We had a happy, professional, competent stay around the corner at the Hilton Garden for just a couple dollars more, who sanitized and proved cleanliness. We also had the OPTION to have housekeeping still. And the rooms were at least double in size compared to HGU. We will never go back to HGU. I do NOT recommend. read more
