I have been eating at Ru Yi for years and am a very big fan. They have great prices, great atmosphere, and a great menu. I have never been disappointed with any meal I have had there. That being said, it doesn't have the same glitz as Taku or the quirkyness of Hisui (not a bad thing, just an observation). The owner is always there and the wait staff are always very friendly. One of the nicest places to eat in Columbus, IN. If you like sushi and are in the Columbus area, this should definitely be a consideration. The place is clean with little decoration. Lights aren't overly bright. A simple, pleasant atmosphere. My only complaint is the servers were overly helpful. Three different servers stopped at our table to see if we were ready to order. We politely responded that we needed a little more time but it wasn't long before the next person would stop and ask. Many different people stopped to take our order, deliver drinks or food and just to check on us. So the service is great, maybe even too helpful. We had a variety of sushi as well as the curry chicken. Everything was fresh and tasted great. The curry chicken was a nice combination of vegetables and meat, not too heavy on either. The curry sauce tasted really good, a nice spicy kick. The sushi was great. I have to be in the mood for sushi, its not something I eat much of. My wife is close to being a connoisseur, she could probably eat nothing but. We both left full and pleased. Prices are what I'd expected, $10-20 a person. They have a variety of sushi, both in types and quantities...platters sized from a few varieties for a couple up to huge platters for parties. Very quiet, only three ither people for dinner. Sake came not warm but boiling in a metal flask and metal cup. So hot, it could not be poured. Sake normally comes in a porcelain flask and matching porcelain cup. Had to ask for utensils and a napkin. Egg roll was a bit small and miso soup, instead of a mostly clear broth as is usual, was dark brown. Sushi was ok but i've had better from supermarkets. As is common in many Asian restaurants, check was given without offering desert which i believe was on the menu. Missed opportunity. The server and the manager here are sooo rude. They don't know how to behave. I asked for an extra plate and servers said "wait few seconds" and Just didn't come back. My friend's dish had stale chicken and smelled weird, when he told the manager, manager was asking others how their chicken was and then he told my friend that they used the same chicken. Just be careful when you ask for chili oil / hot sauce. They charge you. It does not make sense. Condiment should be free. It is almost the same thing if an american restaurant charge you for tomato ketchup / pepper.. or japanese restaurant charge you for wasabi. read more

Have only done carryout from Ru Yi but it's always right, and always good. Sushi is fresh and nice looking, and the Thai Curry is outstanding! VERY happy to have another Asian alternative in Columbus. Prices are good and quality is good as well. Dishes have all been just right in terms of spiciness and we usually ask for more spice, which they are happy to accommodate. Generally a Japanese place with some Chinese and Thai menu items. I usually come for lunch and get the bento box with a salad, couple of dumplings, teriyaki chicken, and a few california rolls. Everything is decent, but nothing here sings. Most recently my chicken was tough, the salad was overdressed, and the california roll was a little mushy. Will I go back? Yes, but not often. Many things seem to often need a little more care. I feel like they try to do too much. read more

Downward Spiral - hope they can regain what they used to be. I used to come to Ru Yi on a consistent basis because you could get Americanized Chinese cuisine with decent sushi for a fair price. What I encountered the last time was a manager who was begrudgingly wanting to correct an order that our table had made. A group of four of us went for lunch. I ordered off the "secret" Chinese menu which has both words and photographs for what one might ask for so you can easily point out what you might like. Upon delivery of our meals, we received different food and then were informed that there was no brown rice (wish I knew that at the time we ordered!). The manager/owner came over to our table, a younger Asian man who seemed highly inconvenienced by our request to correct the order. This was his suggestion: "I mean, I guess we can fix it but you'll have to wait ANOTHER 25 minutes for your order." No kidding. I'd rather wait and get what I asked for rather than eat something we didn't order. To be clear, this wasn't a language barrier issue. I think what ended up happening is that we received another table's order. They were simple things like Chicken with Broccoli or General Tso's chicken.... not what we ordered. We also had a native Chinese speaker in our party which surprised the manager when he found out one in our party spoke Mandarin. We'll be back but next time we'll just leave to go to Jimmy John's next door if our order is incorrect. read more

Being situated in the crappy town of Columbus, Indiana, I didn't have high hopes for this place. But dang, they manged to not live up to those expectations. I got miso soup, a green salad, and a dynamite roll. The miso soup was so strong. I don't think they cooked the seaweed at all, as it smelled and tasted very, very strongly of fish. The green salad was decent. The dressing was good. But how do you manage to screw up a dynamite roll? It was falling apart and the salmon was cold. My boyfriend got tom uum soup and basil fried rice with shrimp. I'm not sure what that soup was, but it was definitely not tom yum. It was thick and tasted of shrimp, even though it was ordered with tofu. The basil fried rice was just ok. It wasn't thai basil fried rice, but it was edible. Won't go back here. Ever. Ate here twice. First time would rate as a 4 and second time a 2. So average rating of a 3. First visit my husband and I both had nice stir fry dishes, which were very tasty, well spiced and fresh. Sevice was prompt. Second visit was on a very crowded Thursday night. Seemed to be some confusion as to which server was to wait on us. Ordered the Thai salmon. Beyond disappointed. Had lunch here about 6 months ago and was pleased with quality and pricing. Talked my husband into trying for dinner. Dinner was double the price for less food and the food itself (General Tso' and vegetable moo shu) was way overcooked and bland. It was a cause for celebration when this Asian restaurant opened on the west side of Columbus! Until Ru Yi, Asian cravings required a long ride for locals. I must admit I was a little scared when I first walked into this restaurant and saw the Chinese, Thai, and Japanese fair. I was skeptical that they could do a good job with all three cuisines. Well, I was wrong to doubt this. I've had entrees of all three cuisines and they do a great job with all three. My favorites are the hot and sour soup (fantastic!) and the Hunan Beef. The sushi is also excellent. Carry out is fast and accurate. This is a well managed family restaurant. It is a great addition to the west side of Columbus and is located close to Interstate 65. read more

Some of the best Asian food I've ever had in Indiana by far! I've never had anything that I wasn't absolutely pleased with here. The shrimp lo mein is the best my husband and I have ever had! Since having had the shrimp lo mein at Ru Yi, no other shrimp lo mein tastes good anymore. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Columbus or traveling down I-65 and needing a place to eat. General Tso's chicken is chunks of chicken leftovers, breaded, fried, and tossed in a ho-hum sauce. House special soup for 2? Yeah...2 bowls of corn starch for my wife and I with a shrimp: $7.25. Really?!?! Shrimp Pad Thai: tiny shrimp, noodles, onions, tossed in more ho-hum sauce with some bean sprouts on the side. Oh, and some smashed peanuts on the top. Pretty abysmal. While Ru Yi's sushi may be good, the customer service is horrible. My boyfriend and I ordered a Jobu Roll, Hawaiian Roll, and Mob Lobster Roll-upwards of 50 dollars in sushi. Upon arriving home with our order, we realized that none of the rolls were correct. We immediately called the restaurant and were told to identify what rolls we had. It is not the customers role to identify a wrong order. We brought the rolls into the restaurant and were called liars despite the fact that the hostess could not identify the rolls correctly. When we noted that there were things missing from each of the rolls, he dismissed this and continued to tell us we were wrong. As compensation, we were told we would get 10% off of our next order. They did not offer to remake our sushi or to rectify the situation. When we demanded that we get our money back, he gave us our money back for the 3 rolls (not our full order). I have been a loyal patron of Ru Yi since I moved to Columbus and will never visit the establishment again. read more

If there was a "zero stars" option, I would choose it. After several bad experiences with service at this restaurant my husband and I decided we would never go back. (I have a small, inconspicuous birthmark on my forehead, and the manager pointed it out EVERY TIME we went in, making me so uncomfortable that I refused to go in if he was there) We didn't, until a friend gave me a $20 gift card for my birthday. We decided, since it was basically free, to try it one last time. The food was mediocre, as was the service, but whatever. I went out to the car while my husband paid. The manager said the gift card had nothing on it, threw it away, and made my husband pay the bill in full. And then said to him "Your wife isn't gonna be happy about that..." It is possible that this was an isolated event or a misunderstanding, but another friend of mine was given a gift card BY the restaurant because of a problem with an order and when he went back to use it, it mysteriously didn't work and he had to pay the balance in full. I concur with all the positive reviews. I have eaten at this place four times now, and I haven't been disappointed yet. Their sushi rolls are fresh and tasty...far better than most places you're going to find in Indiana, much less dinky-poop Columbus. I've also had their yellow curry chicken which was quite good (the curry was not too watery and not too thick...perfect). I have to say, I have had a hard time tracking down good places to eat while living in Columbus but this was one of the few I managed to find. Word of advice: the lunch time menu is significantly cheaper though the dinner menu has much more variety (especially if you want special sushi rolls). It's worth it to try this place out. read more
