I was extremely surprised by the hibachi dinner I got from Kumo in Franklin! I ordered chicken hibachi and the portion size was HUGE. This is one of the biggest portions of chicken hibachi I've ever gotten and it was reasonably priced! I think it was like $17. I got 2 additional meals out of this! Not only was the portion huge, it tasted amazing. The fried rice was some of the best fried rice over ever had. It's definitely on the smaller size and doesn't look like your normal hibachi place. My husband and I popped in here for yet another sushi lunch since we were in the neighborhood. The restaurant was small, dark and low-key, without many patrons when we came in, but more entered as the lunch hour wore on. We both ordered the two rolls lunch, which comes with either miso soup or salad - we both got miso soup. We also got an order of gyoza as an appetizer to share. The gyoza was delicate and tasty, with a nice little sauce on the side. The miso soup was good and hot enough that we had to let it cool for a bit before eating it (after having been helpfully warned by the waitress). I ordered two salmon rolls, cut extra-small. The fish was fresh and smooth, just a little fishy but perfectly acceptable. My husband had spicy tuna and spicy salmon and he enjoyed it. Our bill came to about half what we spent at Ichiban in Greenwood a few days ago, so I thought it was reasonable. I like the ambiance of this restaurant, because it is dimly-lighted and low-key and never very busy. Will definitely be back! read more

We had dinner tonight. The rice, scallops, shrimp and miso soup was good. The filet was tough. I needed a knife to cut it small enough to eat it. Service is usually good. Tonight, however, wasn't as good. I showed him a Discover Indy coupon and he said he'd take it at the end. At checkout, he said they don't take them. Pretty frustrating. I like the hibachi but can't see paying an automatic tip. I always tip but they need to earn it. The automatic tip doesn't give them the incentive to do a good job. Service usually lacks. We usually eat here several times a month. After tonight we probably won't be back for a long time. read more

This restaurant is tucked away in the corner of a small shopping center that has several food options to compete with. So, for lunch, they offer a popular buffet with a wide variety of Japanese food/sushi to choose from. I'm not a buffet guy (no way to know how long food has been sitting there), so I asked for a menu when I entered. Note that the entry doesn't look to promising since there is an unused fish tank that is empty and needs cleaning/to be removed to make a better impression. Inside the restaruant, there is a single room for dining with the sushi prep area to the left, the checkout station on the near right and the buffet beyond that. The seating as mostly four top tables is in the middle. The lighting is on the dim side. For those selecting the buffet, they were free to help themselves once they let the server know. It did have a mix of appetizers, a few entrees, and some sushi options which I noticed were replenished during the lunch time. I started with a cup of green tea (individual cup) that was good, but because of the cup which did not have a handle, was hot to touch. I also got a house salad with ginger dressing that was good, but had WAY TOO MUCH dressing (see photo). If they would have scaled back the dressing, the salad would have been much better because the lettuce was fresh and crisp. I ordered two Salmon (Sake) Nigiri style for $2 each. The servings were large and fresh. Very good, though I settled on regular soy sauce. (I didn't see any low salt options sitting out.) I finished with the Crazy Dragon Roll which was really good. Nice balance of flavors with tempura shrimp on both ends that were nice and crispy. I asked the hostess/waitress if I paid her at the table or at the front desk and she said either was fine, so I simply headed up there to pay when I was finished. Depends on what you're looking for. We expected hibachi tables but there were none. That was actually fine because we just stopped by for lunch so didn't need the whole presentation. Atmosphere was really nice. Clear soup was a little blander than I've had before but still good. They have lunch servings at good prices. Had the steak hibachi. Overall good food and a good value. Can't do my normal margarita review because it they did not serve liquor (boo). They also have a nice selection of sushi and sashimi. read more

Um. Why haven't I been here before? Some friends and I met here for lunch yesterday and I loved it. They were constantly bringing out fresh hot food for the buffet and it was all delicious. I am not opposed to buffets but usually they're kinda soggy/not very fresh at any type of restaurant in my opinion. But it was all delicious! I tried pretty much everything and there wasn't a thing I didn't like. And I loved that they had sushi out too. Also the servers were really sweet. I joined the group late and a lady came up pretty quickly concerned that she noticed I didn't have a drink and thought our server forgot it. I told her I had just arrived no worries. My dad and I have been coming here for years and it's one of our favorite quaint spots in town. We just came in for the first time since the pandemic and the regular server recognized us right away! Now I went here to celebrate my best friends birthday. I didn't know what to expect considering I hadn't been to a restaurant where they cook in front of you. Before I get into this review, I'd like to say a few things. Firstly, I feel like there's some misinformation regarding the reviews. I don't know how many people use Yelp and look at the reviews but if it's as many people as I'm thinking then they need to know the truth. Secondly, while I do believe there's some misinformation, I'm not classifying every single review incorrect. When people go have experiences at these restaurants then those aren't lies, those are what they witnessed and they either have had a positive or a negative review about it. One Yelp reviewer who I do recommend checking out is Daym Drops. Now let's get into this review! Every person whom was working at this amazing establishment was wearing masks. The environment of the restaurant was wonderful and menu has a large selection of foods. I haven't had every single item on the menu but I can safely say that I've had positive experiences every time I've gone. Not once, not twice... But every time. Kumo supplies you with enough food that you can save for later if you get full early... Wink wink. But I got full and usually the homemade food is just alright. I wouldn't classify any homemade food as better then Kumo.... No, this restaurant is a very special place to eat at and seeing these polite workers well make the food in front of you is absolutely stunning and incredible. They also offer a good dessert section which is phenomenal. As far as any complaints go, I can't say I really have. Pleasantly surprised to find (and enjoy) decent teriyaki bentos, tonkatsu, & chirashi -- common Japanese dishes scarcely offered in the Mid-west. While some of the sushi fish pre-frozen, they are always adequately thawed and--aside from the cephalopods-- seldom "chewy". Additionally, seasonal fish swim into the offerings. It's just okay. I ordered rare steak but it was delivered well-done. Well done removes all flavor from meat. This is the reason for the 3 stars. Everything else was okay. Most Japanese and Chinese places here in Indiana have the same taste no matter the dish, soy. Everything pretty much tastes the same. Kumo is my go-to sushi place. I have never had an issue with this quaint and tucked away restaurant! You can even order online through BeyondMenu and they'll have it ready to pick up within 15-20 minutes. Most special rolls are of average price, usually about $12-14, but they also have their basic rolls for about $5. Sushi is always extremely fresh and tastes amazing! They also have hibachi style dinners if you're not a sushi fan. I have tried over 10 sushi places around central Indiana and this remains my usual place because the food is amazing and price is reasonable. read more

It's never consistent. The location is a pain the rump to get to from our house. So, when I fight the traffic to get there and it's closed it's very annoying. Can't beat the quality for the price! It's our go-to restaurant in Franklin. The lunch buffet is ridiculously cheap considering they serve sushi on it (limited selections, but still). Friends roll and Sunday roll are a couple of our favorite sushi rolls. As long as you keep in mind that this is sushi in Indiana at a reasonable price, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised...I know my wife and I were the first time we ate here.
