Uncle Italo "Babe" Caccia was a longtime sportsman and athletic director at ISU. Poppie worked at the bar and raced horses. He was also a founding member of the Bannock County Sherriff's Posse. Poppies and Grams lived right behind the bar on Cottage Ave. Well, through a field, but about a 2 minute walk in decent weather. I used to hide in the store room sometimes when it wasn't proper for me to be out in the bar. Debbie Polletti worked there for years. She used to keep her tips in the jukebox coin return. I was about 5, playing pool, and thought I'd hit the jackpot when I found Debbie's tips. She had 2 sons, one about my age. There's a traumatic potty-training story here somewhere. But McDermott's, nee Caccia's, endures. Poppie used colored shingles on the roof so the pilots could see the name CACCIA'S on their way into town. There used to be an annual camping trip for the regulars. Lots of horse people and serious drinkers. And, coming in on Hwy 30, it was the 3rd place they'd pass after the airport watering hole and The Pilot House. It was the first place you'd pass on the way home from The FMC or J.R. Simplot plants. So come on in, play some shuffleboard, shoot a game of pool, put some money in the jukebox, and have a cold one.

I think it's fair to say that the Eastern Idaho Fair is the best fair in Idaho. Eastern Idaho has much better food; they have more unique local options and better quality food. There are the classics every year like "Tiger Ears" (giant scones used for Boy Scout funding), Dutch oven cooking, Indian tacos (Native American, although I have no idea how "authentic" they are), Potato on a stick, burgers with doughnuts for buns (I don't know who wants it but they've got it), cheese on a stick (cheese breaded and fried on a stick), corn dogs, jalapeño corn dogs (corn dog with jalapeño and cheese injected into the hot dog), burgers, steak sandwiches (prime rib and rib eye), ice cream, Carmel apples, kettle corn, nuts, and a whole bunch of other stuff. You don't come here to eat healthy! Like most fairs there are booths with various businesses, and local competition. There were a large variety of animals displayed and a large amount of artwork. In the cake section some amazing pieces of art were created. There was a cake that I swear looked just like actual boots. The photos, drawings, and paintings were also quite impressive. The rides and games are your standard fair. I decided to ride a few this year, but I really can't do too much because it makes me nauseous if I'm not careful. But if you don't mind spinning contraptions you will probably enjoy them. Most rides are $4-$5 a person. If you ride a lots of rides you can get an unlimited pass for $30. There are a few performances, although I never payed that much attention to it. When I was there they had a Native American dance performance. I can't state how "authentic" it is, but it was fun to watch. All in all, if you want to have the best fair experience, this is the place to go.

Small, but what do you expect for $5 adult admission ($1 for K-12)…read more The permanent exhibits are fossils and biological specimens from the area, including skeleton replicas of protoceratops, Utahraptor leg, sabertooth tiger, bison, etc. They also have anthropological pieces on the plains Indians (pottery, jewelry, arrows, etc). They had two special exhibits when I went. One was on the history of Native American service in the US military. The other exhibit, which I found most fascinating, was on Heliocoprion, a genus of extinct sharks with teeth in a buzzsaw pattern. Fossils of Helio species have been found from the Ural Mountains in Russia and across the Western US. Very, very cool.
