I wanted to share my experience I had with Steven at his "temp" location. I'm a new client and found Ruby Salon searching the internet (bad idea). I was prepared for my appointment I had a picture of a cut and color saved to my phone. When showing Steven the picture he seemed like he understood what I wanted; chin length cool blonde almost platinum hair with some low lights added so it wouldn't be such high maintenance on keeping the color up. My hair was already previously bleached and toned to the lightest blonde but needed the warmth taken out (I mentioned I do not like the gold tone in my hair) and the length was just above shoulders. Steven repeated what I wanted and went to mix the color. During the foiling process Steven showed no interest in trying to engage, which was fine since I'm not big on making small talk. Once my hair was processed rinsed and shampooed I went back to his station and looked in the mirror and noticed my hair still had very warm (gold) tones and the foiling sections looked very thick and stripy, I gasped at the sight of my hair but thought it's still wet and not parted the way I normally part it so I didn't say anything. He turns me away from the mirror and starts sectioning my hair to cut it. He starts in the back and at first it felt like he was getting the length right but then he started using the thinning shears A LOT. I hate thinning shears and as a stylist myself (that's right you heard correctly) don't use thinning shears especially on bleached hair! He continued to cut my sides and that's when I really stared to notice how short he was going and he continued to use thinning shears! Mind you this whole time I did not see my hair because I was turned away from the mirror. He then started to blow dry and round brush my now very short hair, he then adds product and turns me to face the mirror.... I couldn't believe what I saw. He completely messed up my hair cut color and OMG style. I don't even know or have a reference to what decade that style was from, maybe 90's. I was in shock! I told him "wow this is really short and the color is not right". He said "oh I guess I should've looked at the picture again before cutting" , you think, or maybe talk to your client! Then he asked well what about the color do you like that I said NO but I'll make it work. Thankfully he did not charge me for the cut but it didn't make up for the humility I felt leaving the salon! My husband was very sweet and said it looks nice. We get to the car and he said "why would he have styled your hair like that? " I'm wondering this as well! Later that evening I washed it and checked over everything, I'm a hairstylist. I noticed some of the low lights didn't go to the ends of my hair and that the low lights did not match my natural at all (ashy level 6) it was a warm level maybe 7, the blonde still looked the same (very warm) except where he foiled in bleach his foils bled and the sections are very blotchy. I usually don't tell stylist I'm also a hair stylist because it makes them nervous but I'm thinking maybe I should've said something. read more

This salon gave me a full body wax using the same stick the entire time from my pits to my private she used the same waxing stick. Not only that but she burned me in 3 different places (my arm, chin, and hooha) this was a week ago. On top of that she wouldn't wax parts of me that she claimed were too short. That is not true because when I wax myself at home I've waxed shorter than the length she was speaking of. Then there were patches of missed hair all over me I looked horrific. Now that the hair is trying to grow back I have extreme pimples and rashes it's horrific. I was the bride and I felt like the grooms younger hairy pimple brother. Anyways. Don't recommend. If a male is doing your spray tan, it's super neglect on the receptionist part not to disclose this up front. I've read a number of Yelp reviews as it relates to this situation with Ruby Salon. Women coming in with intent to be tanned with little or nothing on only to find out that JP is the one doing their service. And it's only YOU and HIM in the room. The entire experience is awkward to say the least and I ain't no prude! But really don't care to have a young man looking at my middle aged backside in a thong! Additionally, the spray tan itself was quick in comparison to others that I've had, most recently this morning with tech, Brittney, at "Face It Spa and Wellness" in Severna Park. The latter being very thorough taking place in a nice room vs something less than aesthetically pleasing. Not to mention, NO window coverings for Pete's sake!! And an office building directly across for all to see :( Last but not least, the tan didn't last but only a few days - can do better in a self-tanning booth for 1/2 the price. Skip this one. I'm honestly between a two and a three here. I went here this week for a cut and had the strangest salon experience ever. Let me start by saying I love the space and decor. Contemporary and quirky, totally my taste. The check in was fine, but I was never offered a water or coffee - and I was dying of thirst. My stylists' name was Steve, I'm guessing he's one of the owners based on previous reviews. Now, Steve's a strong guy - when he was combing my wet hair, it kind of hurt. As a matter of fact, throughout the whole experience, I felt a little manhandled. Not "relaxing". Even stranger, the guy asked me only one question - he had no interest in conversing at all. I mean, usually I prefer it that way, but then I realized I was the client "in between" another client who was getting color done. I tried not to let it bother me, because when he swung my chair around, my hair looked pretty awesome. I haven't had my hair cut look this good since I moved out of Manhattan. So, 4 on the actual cut, 1 on the service. The things that kept me from giving them fewer stars: location, availability to get me in at the last minute (even if i was rushed in and out within 25 minutes) and ability to leave tip on my credit card. I have been to Ruby's Salon 3 times now. Brooke is the absolute best! She is so sweet! I wanted to make a change. I have often had hairdressers try to convince me not to make drastic changes or even argue with me about what I want to do with my hair. Brooke listened to me. She discussed the changes I wanted to make, asked me if I was sure (without being condescending) and gave me the exact haircut I was looking for. When I returned for my second visit, to get my hair trimmed, I told her I wanted a color change also. I showed her the color I wanted and the color my daughter said SHE thought I wanted. Brooke said, "Get the color YOU want!" When we were done, she said, "Give it two weeks. If you don't like it because it was not enough, I'll fix it." I went back today because I had wanted more red (my hair apparently does not take color well). She fixed it at no charge. I've been hesitant to write a review only because I have never wrote a review before but the more I think about it and discuss it with other hair stylist friends of mine, the more I've decided how important this is for customers AND this business. My best friend has been a client of Kelly for years now and has always had a great experience. After some time of her telling me to go see her, I called to make an appointment but she was busy so I agreed to schedule with JP. The appointment was on my actual birthday so I was super excited to have my hair done for my big day and to feel pretty for my plans. My experience was the COMPLETE opposite from the second JP arrived (late , too btw). When he arrived, he opened the door, glared at me through his sunglasses without any form of greeting and rudely asked the receptionist "Is THAT all my hair?!" At first I convinced myself there is no way I heard that right and just kept my attitude positive. Next, he had me follow him upstairs without asking me how I was doing or anything, instead I asked him and his response was "crazy." Not sure what that meant but I chuckled and ignored it. When we got upstairs he didn't say "have a seat" but instead walked to his chair, *threw* whatever was on it to another chair and pointed me to have a seat. When I sat down he asked "what are we doing today?" in the most uninterested and monotone way. when I told him he said nothing. I paused waiting for a response but when I didn't get one I offered to show him a picture. WORST PART: with an attitude he now says that what I am asking for would require a full head of highlights. (I would have settled for partial had I known there was a problem) but I agreed that it all sounded fine. He then rolled his eyes and made me sound silly for asking for a price for a full (I've only ever done partial so i didn't even know a ball park price). From then there was another 10 minute awkward silence and he decided to make It even worse by telling me that *grabs my hair and waves it around* "IS NOT NORMAL" and that I SHOULD HAVE told the receptionist when I scheduled an appointment??? I said well, if it makes it any better i did fill out a questionnaire online for an appointment before i decided to call. He told me that "THIS IS A HINT TO YOU, FOR THE NEXT TIME YOU EVER SCHEDULE ANY WHERE that because my hair is "down to my ass" (which it isn't btw) that it was my responsibility to tell them. he then explains that now he has to MOVE HIS next client down because he only has 30 minutes???? All of this after not even introducing himself, asking how my day was, or any sort of warm up was VERY discouraging. I understand he may have been busy that day but this is something the client should not know about, I believe it is between him and the receptionist. I am in the service industry myself and how he spoke down to me about something I had NO CLUE about was absolutely unnecessary and extremely unprofessional. Plus, 30 minutes isn't enough time for a partial at the least?? How he worded everything was so unsettling and at this point I felt extremely uncomfortable. I have never, ever had to explain my hair type when scheduling an appointment and I'd assume if you are doing color you would make enough time for the client regardless My hair is fine and I know i have a lot of it and it is long- but I have only ever gotten compliments on it and I've NEVER made someone annoyed with having to do it??? From this point on JP made zero attempt with conversation other than the very dull question "so... are you in school." THIRTY minutes after the awkward encounter and at that point I didn't even want to engage. I forced myself to smile and be polite for the sake of my hair but my god was it the worst hour and a half I've ever experience sitting in a stylists chair. When I paid i asked the receptionist if i was in the wrong and she said absolutely not, and was SO embarrassed and upset for me that she offered me three free hair products. She made me feel better for that but i still felt sad and my birthday was sort of ruined. My hair is a lot blonder from having a full, but by no means does it look good. It has a yellow tint and the highlights in the most focal part of my head are stripy and rushed. all in all I am entirely displeased with my birthday experience here with this stylist at Ruby and I am so disappointed to the point of 1. Never returning and 2. Encourage everyone I ever talk to to never book this place. (Since there was absolutely no attempt to help the situation by Kelly or anyone else) read more

I have been here twice, both times my appointment for a color and cut was with Janna. I have fine, thin hair and Janna does an excellent job on both the color and cut. I'm giving 4 stars because its a bit pricey. Even tho I live about 50 minutes away, when I know I'm coming to Annapolis for a day of shopping I will book another appointment with Janna. TL read more

Outstanding customer service from Alex and I am thrilled with Jenny who fixed my color!! Very chic salon with an excellent selection of the best hair care products!! My color was blah and had signs of color banding from a previously visited salon. Jenny evaluated the color problem on my first visit and has restored my hair to a beautiful color by the second appointment. Very pleased with how friendly everyone is and the DIY coffee bar. Ruby's is owned and operated by Steve and Kelly Fisher, both award winning hairstylists. I've been going to Ruby's for the last year and half for my haircuts, and I'm very satisfied with the haircuts I get there. JP is my normal stylist, and we have a good chat while he's cutting. He has always said that he will trim his customer's bangs for free between cuts, and while I haven't taken him up on this offer yet (I usually notice that they need a trim at 10 at night, and I wind up doing it myself), one day I intend to! Ruby's recently added a manicure and pedicure station on the first floor. Debby is the manicurist. She did my nails for the first time last weekend and did a FABULOUS job on them. While a tad pricey, I considered it was worth every penny, because not only did my nails look great, the place was NOT reeking of chemicals, unlike those places at malls and strip malls I pass, and won't go near because the smell drives me away long before I get near them. That alone made it worth going to get my nails done, which is going to make me a lifelong customer. Also, Debby uses several disposable instruments, such as a nail file, buffer, etc, and sets them aside JUST for your use, so you don't have to worry about who's DNA is on that nail file. You can take said instruments home with you, or leave them there in a Ziploc baggy with your name on it for your next visit. That scores HUGE bonus points with me, in terms of cleanliness and health factors! One slight problem for most customers might be lack of parking. I live down the street, so I don't have this issue, but you can park on the street, and there might be a space free next to the building. There is a parking garage two doors down you could park at as well. In closing, I would highly recommend Ruby's. The prices are about the same compared to any other high end salon in Annapolis, you get award-winning, friendly staff to work on your hair, and the manicure section downstairs is nice, clean, and chemical-smell free. read more

I went in for a haircut last year. I liked the service and the atmosphere and my stylist Kelly was very nice. I have very fine hair and I was also growing out highlights. I asked her to give me a shoulder length cut with long layers because I need more volume, and to get rid of some length that had split ends and the old hair color. What she gave me was a cute cut but not what I wanted at all. It had no volume and she cut it shorter in the back than in the front. I hate that look and it looked terrible growing out, I had to cut the front myself after a week or 2. This cut was one of those that only looks cute when you leave the salon and looks like crap when you try to do it on your own. I won't go back to Kelly but I would maybe try another stylist at Ruby if I got a good referral. read more

I was very impressed when i went to Ruby Salon, im used to using my own hair stylist back at home and had made a mistake using box hair dye. So i was set up with JP to fix my purples and blues of weird colors to make a lovely blonde highlight! He did wonderfully and i left feeling so satisfied with my hair! I never left Ruby since then! Ruby was a good place for a few years but has gotten too big and greedy and forgotten how to take care of their customers. Now the staff is overworked, the place is crowded and appointment times are ignored. Saw JP for cut and color. I was his first client that morning and had never been to the salon before. Instead of introducing himself or even saying hello, he asked me what I wanted- "you want full or partial?" Not only was he rude and standoffish he didn't even seem to enjoy what he does for a living as he complained the whole time. I wound up getting partial highlights and a cut. I asked him to not make my highlights too thick/chunky especially around my face since I'm always pulling my hair back. The finished product revealed very obvious stripes when my hair is pulled back. As far as the salon atmosphere goes- I would say it's decorated cute but I couldn't help but feel un-welcomed. Overall I gave it a two because the salon looked nice but I did not feel the services provided were worth the high price tag. read more

I made an appointment for the first time at Ruby with Kelly on a Saturday. I arrived 15 minutes early, checked in and took a seat in the lobby and waited for Kelly to finish her prior appointment. I know she knew I was there because I heard the receptionist tell her I was there about 10 minutes before my appointment time. No one said anything to me about her running behind. 20 minutes AFTER my appointment was supposed to start I asked what was up. The flippant response I received from the receptionist was that she could reschedule me with another stylist. Absolutely ridiculous. Of course, I left sans service. This is one of the worst salons I have ever been to. The owner did my hair just after I moved to the area last year and I came out looking worse than a lead singer of an 80's hair band. I went to Steve, one of the owners for a haircut...and it was badly needed. I had extremely long hair that had been looking lifeless and dull for about a month. He had to cut off nearly a foot and it was one of the best haircuts I have ever gotten in my life. It has never looked healthier, shinier, or had a better natural shape to it. He is a little rough when he is combing out your hair to blow dry it-but it helps work the natural oils through your hair and gives it AMAZING body. He is phenomenal with hair. Would definitely recommend him-and I am extremely picky with my hair. read more

I went to get a spray tan because their website said it was organic and lasted longer than others. What I didn't know was that it was a man that was going to spray tan me. Fortunately I wore bottoms which I normally don't. I did not have a top. Not only was this a unique situation but then i realized that there wasn't a blind or cover across the many windows in front of me. I was standing in front of an office/apartment bldg. horrifying on so many levels. Go to the other many places in Annapolis that offer this service. read more

Cute little space, friendly service, but way too overpriced, considering haircuts start at $65, and I wasn't too impressed with what I got. The stylist worked hard, but somehow my request for "chin-length bob w/long layers" turned into a pixie cut. No big deal, cuz hair grows back, but it's not really the look I was going for. Maybe I could have used different words to describe what I wanted, but I still think $65 is too much for starters. Plenty of street parking + close to downtown Annapolis. read more

Ruby is a fantastic salon and I have been going to Kelly for many years. She is very kind, fun, listens well to her clients and does an absolutely phenomenal job. My color is always pretty and glossy and if I need a root boost between appts, I just pop in and they accommodate me when their schedule allows. I have received so many compliments on my color and style for several years and I am always happy to recommend Ruby. If you arrive early or during processing, they have great coffee, a comfortable waiting area, great music and plenty of reading material. I went to Ruby in a pinch while visiting Annapolis with my family. Even though I live in DC, I already plan to make the trip back for my next haircut. Three weeks ago I got my very long wavy hair cut in a DC salon in favor of an A-line bob. It was undoubtedly the worst haircut I have ever gotten -- maybe the worst I have ever seen. The back was way too short and the front way too long. There was no gradual transition. It looked like two different haircuts, short in the back and reverse tapered in the front. Even after returning to the salon to have it evened out, it was a crisis. While visiting Annapolis with my family, I found great reviews for Ruby and thought that could be an opportunity to ameliorate the situation. I went early on a Saturday and the woman at the front desk was friendly and sympathetic. Despite not having an appointment, she checked around and was able to pair me up with Steve, who is evidently one of the owners. I explained the situation to Steve and he immediately saw the problem and had suggestions to fix it, either by evening out the A-line bob or otherwise. He agreed that because my hair is not straight (but also not curly) the A-line would be difficult to maintain. He suggested shortening it up altogether with long layers and a swoopy bang, something playful and easy to maintain. Then he got to work. Steve works very quickly and without showing him a photo or even really having a plan, he was able to understand and help suggest something that I didn't even know I wanted. He works quickly and is very meticulous. He was very pleasant although not super chatty, which was nice -- he was focused on my hair and the result was incredible. Although I would not have chosen this haircut three weeks ago when I cut off a foot of hair, I can surely say this is the best haircut I have ever gotten. The layers add so much volume and fall so nicely in a way that frames my long face. My hair looks healthy and shiny. The haircut cost $75 but is easily worth it. My experience with Ruby undoubtedly earns 5 stars. read more

I had a similar experience to a reviewer below. It was my wedding day and I was early for my appointment, but they took me almost 20 minutes late with zero acknowledgement or apology for the lateness. Needless to say, this was not what I needed on my wedding day. And I totally agree with the reviewer who describe the receptionist as flippant. A small apology would have gone a really long way. The hair did turn out well thought thankfully (see below). I feel 3 stars is generous, especially considering how much I paid - almost $300 with makeup, hair and tips for both ladies. I was happy with my makeup, but the makeup artist did not use a primer (I had some with me, so I wish she had asked) and she had to stop to go wash someone's hair which I thought was super weird - I paid $75 for makeup, which to me says I get her full attention and focus, but what do I know. Sigh. I also really wished she had offered me false eyelashes because I would have 100% said yes - I was a stressed bride (remember, I was feeling rushed at this point because they took me late and my makeup artist was stopping to attend to other clients....) and just did not think to ask. The makeup turned out nicely, in spite of these things. I will say, Kelly did a fabulous job with my hair. I received many compliments! Also, I liked her and her calming demeanor (helpful on my wedding day). read more

I've been going to Ruby ever since Brooke moved there - at least 7 years now. Love watching all the other stylists work their magic too. I have yet to see a bad cut from anyone. My guess is that about 20% of the clientele are men. The atmosphere is relaxing; everyone is very friendly and helpful. I'm sad to say that I didn't enjoy my experience at Ruby's. I went for a spray tan, got to my appointment about 5 minutes early and was kept waiting 15 minutes past my appointment just to have the receptionist tell me it was because she forgot that she was supposed to take me to a different section of the salon with no apology. When I got up to the spray tan area it was just a basic room with windows that looked out over a very busy street- someone could have very easily looked up to see a very naked me. On top of all this, JP who did my spray tan hardly said two words to me besides asking what I was getting the tan for and instructing me on how to stand. He didn't even really ask how dark of color I wanted (I mentioned it myself when it became clear he wasn't going to ask). The salon is pretty but I wasn't impressed unfortunately. read more

Once again, another Annapolis stylist disappoints. When I first starting going to JP, I was very happy with my experience and my hair. This all changed at my third appointment. His attitude was so awful and made me extremely uncomfortable. He would stop working on my hair to check his phone and then stand there and text. He also stopped having conversations and had an attitude as if he didn't want to be there. It was awful sitting there for 2 hours. I would put up with this if I still liked my hair but it got bad as well. The highlights were so spaced out and just NOT what I had asked for. I tried again for a 4th time just in case he was having an off day and got the exact same treatment and horrible job on my hair. Safe to say, I will never return and will warn people to stay away. read more

Love Ruby Salon! Needed a local salon and Ruby is a new favorite. Kelly does an amazing job with both my color (great first visit for some corrective coloring!) and cut. And she's so lovely to talk to! I love the laid back vibe and courteous staff. Also had a wonderful experience with a color boost when I couldn't fit in an entire color/cut! A very bad salon. Lots of ambitions with NO delivery whatsoever. I've done my hair there several times. My hairdresser was JP. The most unprofessional, inattentive and careless hairdresser possible (very poor skills too). The first few times I went to him were ok, the last time though he completely ruined my hair with the color I even didn't ask for. It will take me another several months now to get back from where I started when I came to him. Rude, ridiculous place with very little skills but lots of ambitions. There is no single decent hairdresser there. Don't even think of going to them!! Well, it's almost always empty anyways... read more

I went to see Steve. I wished I'd read the reviews and LISTENED to them before going here. I was desperate at the time. I needed a last minute root touch up and trim, and he was able to accommodate me. I used to live in Annapolis but don't anymore. I was there to bring my daughter to college and decided to make time to get my hair done. He could fit me in. That was where the favor ended. He sat me in the chair, mixed color, put it just on my root area and sat me in a chair to process. I told him my hair was very color resistant. He didn't even come to check my hair to see if it was ready. He had some girl wash it out. Then he "shaped up" my ends, snipping here and there. Five minutes later, he says "Ok. You're all set.' No style, no styling gel, just a wash and go. I was a bit confused but I figured he must be pressed for time since he squeezed me in. I was FLOORED to get a bill for $175 to get my roots touched up, my hair barely trimmed, and leave with a wet head. The lack of any styling product left my hair a frizzy mess and I had to redo it when I got home. On top of that, I was seeing grays peeping through exactly 4 days later. It was a complete rip off. Avoid this place at all cost! I will NEVER go back and I have tons of friends in Annapolis that I will tell to do the same if they value their money. Ridiculous! read more

Let me just say that my husband is active duty , with that said; we move TONS . I dread every move because that means finding a new hair salon every couple of years. A little history about me, I am latin and love my highlights and "blondish" look, specially for the summer. I have a tendency to look "orange" if not done right . Out of 3 countries and countless State's, Ruby Salon has been the BEST at doing exactly what I wanted. I was styled by Steve about 2 weeks ago and loved my hair at the time, however after going home I realized I wasnt "blonde" enough (the lighter the better with me). I immediately called and they were so nice and helpful. They understood my situation and booked me for the next available appointment. Steve was so nice and gracious, even the 2nd time around, even after I wasnt "happy" or light enough. I was concerned about my hair and undergoing a second treatment , he explained everything and made me feel comfortable. The outcome is pure MAGIC , I have never been this happy with my hair . Yes, its pricey, but ladies its worth it ! treat yourself. Steve is not the "chatty" type , some people mind this, I had no problem with it. He knew what he was doing and that's what matters to me. I get chatted up enough at my local mani/pedi place.. lol... I absolutely loved every second of my experience and while expensive , I have found my new Salon for the next couple of years .
