    Salad bar
    Erin L.

We've been one time before, a long time ago. Everything was different this time, in a good way. We arrived just after 6 and were seated right away. Our waitress took our drink order and was back in enough time to order. I got the shrimp and scallops with broccoli. I substituted grilled zucchini instead of rice at no charge. They do have other options for an up-charge. I added the salad bar for $5.99. All of it was good. My only complaint about the salad bar is there was no cottage cheese. That's a must. And with two corn options, which I rarely see, I think they could add cottage cheese. and beets need to be pickled IMO. Hubs got the ribs and ribeye. The Texas dry rub was a bit sweet and ribs tender. Ribeye was fantastic. Not dry and had flavor. Didn't even need the sauce. Loaded baked potato was great. Ended with the dulche de leche sundae. Wow! Anyway, it's definitely updated with the lights and flooring and a larger and better salad bar than another place around town you might have been to before. We will be back!! Our server was fantastic!

Its been a while since my last visit and I was searching for happy hour deals. When Ruby Tuesday come up as having a burger and drink special I knew I was in. I was honestly impressed. I had a mushroom and Swiss smash burger, tots and the salad bar with a nice cold beer cheaper then most places and I was not one bit disappointed. In and out in less then an hour with an impressive salad bar is really A-OK in my book. Deal for deal its hard to beat at $12.99. I suggest to not overlook this staple on 86th street.

Stopped in for an early lunch between softball games. Was able to get seated right away. Server was busy but the bar tender jumped in and served us drinks. Order went in and was back to us in about 15 minutes. Food was good flavor and as expected. Good ambiance as the staff was happy and were enjoying their work day.

4.25* (out of 5) Food: 4* Atmosphere: 4* Value: 5* Service: 4* 07/24/2023 A co-worker visiting Des Moines was hungry for a salad bar and asked about Ruby Tuesday. He got me thinking about the salad bar, so I enjoyed that (way too much actually...left stuffed) along with a $3 Margarita (see picture). I absolutely love the dark bread buttery toasted croutons - especially when they have just been brought out and are warm! There aren't as many salad bars around anymore, but this place has one of the best. My friend had the Jalapeno Bacon Queso Burger (see picture) along with the salad bar. He loved the salad bar, but preferred his bacon more crispy and found the bun to be a little on the soggy side (possibly due to the queso). It is tough to beat this place for value and it has a decent selection at the salad bar - all of which I found to be fresh. This is a solid stop for your budget, especially if you go with the Daily Specials.

Food probably 4 star but the service ruined our experience. Quick seating, pretty small place but clean. Took at least 10 mins to get helped, drinks came out quick and took our meal order, then poof disappeared for 45? Mins till bill time. Kitchen staff delivered food and that's it, no checking on meal, drink refills, zero contact. Bourbon Salmon was nicely done, and the zucchini was cooked through properly, even the rice was good. Burger was average but came with large order of fries. No dessert because it was never offered.

Conveniently placed though not taken empties

IMO, 1st day for Sunday buffet brunch - worth trying after some improvements. Made to order Waffles, omelettes (didn't try) eggs/cheese eggs cheese hash browns - 3 Spinach eggs Benedict - 4 pretzel/egg/brisket sliders - brisket was dry/chewy, sauce was great, fix the brisket and great item - 2.5; 4 + with better brisket b&g's - didn't try as biscuits very soft, gravy looked heavy flour Bow tie pasta with peas, white sauce -, needed stirred from the bottom for sauce - 3+ mashed potatoes - 2 chicken strips - same from menu but not crispy from being in warmer - 2 Chinese chicken and rice - again not crispy from being in warmer, good flavor of chicken, rice dry 2.5 sautéed vegetables - 4 sausage(no casing) - 3 break fast pizza (1/2'd sausage links or bacon with egg/cheese - needed a sauce drizzle or sauce on the dough, as was dry and blah - 2 fruit, muffins many deserts: Pumpkin Cheesecake -5 Red velvet cake - dry, good frosting- 2.5 Blondie - 3 Streusel cake - 3 Caramel rolls - 5 Brownie - 3 Oreo desert bar - 4 Also parfaits and other deserts

I had asked her twice if they could turn the music down, which she did ask the guy behind the bar, I don't know if he was a bartender or a cook, but I heard him say what do they want, I've turned it down four times. Well, yes, I did overhear that I was sitting very clause to the bar. It was very rude of him, and I had been very kind and requested that the music be turned down some. The food was pretty good, I had the fig and creamy goat cheese flatbread. Overall, it might be a very good place for other people, rudeness is not acceptable.

While a bit of a hidden gem off of 86th Street, the building is modern, chic and inviting - with a large covered patio area connected to the north side of the building. The one negative is that the temperature is kept very cold inside, so consider bringing a sweater or light jacket to stay comfortable. Unfortunately, tonight was a bit cold outside, so it was a coinflip on which was better - we opted for the patio seating and the wind settled down during our visit to get quite comfortable. We started with a Cuban Martini and Sojito (see picture) along with an order of Bang Bang Shrimp (see picture) for an appetizer. We enjoyed the drinks and the Bang Bang Shrimp with the drizzled Yum Yum-type sauce was delicious! For our main courses, my wife ordered the Thai Pasta (see picture) and I opted for the Fig, Avocado and Goat Cheese Salad (see picture). As is our custom, we both shared bites from each of our plates and liked both of them very much - although the Thai Pasta definitely had a bit more 'kick'. We ordered the Tres Leches for dessert (remembering it from our last visit), but unfortunately found that they were sold out, so had to leave without dessert. If you are looking for a modern, unique, Asian fusion type restaurant in the Johnston area, Roots 95 won't disappoint. We were treated so wonderfully and our waiter and the general manager went above and beyond to make us happy. Our wonderful waiter Derek welcomed us and was excited to learn that this was our first visit. He was friendly and helpful and seemed genuinely interested in helping us choose something on the menu that we would enjoy. I decided to get a supreme pizza because I like a lot of toppings on my pizza and my husband got the cavatelli because he was in the mood for pasta. The food came out extremely fast. Unfortunately, I didn't like my pizza very much because the center of the crust was very limp and droopy and the toppings fell off because they were kind of heavy. The outer edge of the crust was crispy but the middle of the crust seemed like maybe it needed to be cooked longer. I felt like the pizza should have been better. My husband loved his cavatelli and gave me a bite. I agreed that it was very good. I was wishing that I had ordered that, too. When Derek came and checked on us, I debated on whether I should say something about the pizza. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. He could probably see the disappointment on my face. He said he really wanted to know what we thought about the food so I told him I was disappointed with the pizza. He was very understanding about it and said he didn't like his pizza droopy either. But we told him the cavatelli was excellent. It was a little bit sweet with the right amount of spiciness. A few minutes later, Courtney the general manager came to our table and apologized about the pizza. She was truly sorry about the pizza and even said she talked to the chef about cooking it longer but he said it might burn the pizza if they did that. And it had so many toppings on it that it might not make a difference on the crust. So she wanted me to pick something else on their menu for free. I was going to decline but she insisted, so I chose the cavatelli. They made it for me and brought it out quickly. We appreciated everything Derek and the GM did to make it up to us which really wasn't necessary. They went above and beyond. I felt bad about it but they wanted our first visit there to be great. Then when Derek brought our bill to us, we saw that they comped both the pizza and the extra cavatelli. So they were only charging us for my husband's meal. AND Derek brought us a free dessert. My husband and I were flabbergasted. They did way more for us than they should have. We have never been treated so well at a restaurant before. I didn't think that restaurants and waitstaff like this existed. It seems like since Covid, when you go to restaurants, they're understaffed or the workers don't seem like they want to be there and barely acknowledge you. But here they bend over backwards to make sure you're happy. I love that and appreciate everything they did. The atmosphere is casual yet upscale. It feels cozy and welcoming, too. There is outdoor seating as well. Believe me, we will be back and we'll tell our friends about this place. If you love excellent service and good food, please check this place out..

There's carpet throughout the dining area, which unfortunately makes the whole place feel a little dingy and dated. One of the coolest things about the restaurant is actually outside. It's located near what used to be a farm, and there's a chicken coop along with a nice herb and vegetable garden that you can walk through. It was a fun and unexpected thing to explore while waiting for our food, especially with a kid. The food itself was very hit or miss, and nothing really wowed our group. I ordered the sirloin medium rare, but it came out closer to medium, and I didn't think the quality of the steak was particularly good for the price. The presentation was also a little odd, with the steak served on a very well-used tin-style plate that had definitely seen better days. Other dishes were mixed as well. The onion strings were a hit, and one person really enjoyed the Reuben. The corn was excellent, and most of us liked the coleslaw and rolls. There was also pieces of spice cake or pumpkin bread tucked underneath the rolls, which was an unusual but surprisingly nice addition. On the other hand, the liver was dry, the prime rib was fattier than expected with quite a bit that wasn't really edible, and the mashed potatoes were very dry and bland. They also bring several family-style sides to the table whether you order them or not, including things like cottage cheese. It felt a little strange and somewhat wasteful since we didn't want or touch some of it, and overall it creates a LOT of food on the table. The meal wasn't particularly inexpensive either. Before tip, we spent about $70 for two adults and a child, which felt pretty steep considering the overall quality of the food. I will give them credit for the country store area. These types of restaurant gift shops can sometimes be filled with a lot of random junk, but this one actually had some interesting Iowa and farm-themed items that were fun to browse. Service was perfectly good, but overall this was more of an interesting one-time experience for us than somewhere I'd be eager to return to. We were invited here rather than choosing it ourselves, and I'm glad we tried it, but there are too many better dining options in the Des Moines area for me to be clamoring to come back.
