Food is good quality, maybe a little overpriced for daily consumption, but not too terrible considering that the portion sizes are pretty hefty in my opinion. I forget what the name of my favorite sandwich is (silly me) but it's a panini type and has chicken and avocado. Don't come here if you have young kids--Ruby's doesn't welcome them since they don't have any high chairs. The food is pretty good and the coffee is OK. Not quite up to the abnormally-high standards of the Bay Area's food + coffee but head and heels better than the Subway and Starbucks down the road. A bonus is the staff is really nice. read more

A neighborhood cafe with excellent coffee, food & hospitality. The best in Emeryville CA. I like the Americano, cookies and panini. Fine sandwiches, coffee drinks, and more. Getting welcomed warmly by helpful smiling people is one element that makes a difference. They care. The art is excellent - great photography and painting rotating regularly - spacious ceilings and cool atmosphere. We sat outside and chatted with a pleasant man, interested in us and our experience (turns out it was the owner/operator Albert). Now our friend. We always have a good smile & laugh with him. He reaches out and greets us, my friends and my 11-month-old son. The staff are amazing, responsive and attentive - else why would the chef be there for 13 years and others for nearly as along? We used to run over here on Saturday mornings for a coffee fix when I went to school at NHI. Teachers used to give us extra break time if we opted for Ruby's instead of Starbucks... worth it! Great coffee. Coffee drinks weren't terribly sweet, which was refreshing. I've ALWAYS received great service here. Delicious croissants, yummy sandwiches. We used to walk here from NHI during our lunch hour. Quick service, homemade taste, and a good variety for picky massage students. THE BEST COOKIE EVER is the florentine cookie: this amazing nutty cookie, and one side is dipped in chocolate. GAWD so good! read more

This place is right down the street where I work. Their food is consistently good and they make group sandwich orders super easy, which is great when we are hosting clients in our office. No need to complicate a sandwich order! I just call and order a sandwich basket for 7 people with chips and drinks and they do the rest. Sooo Goooood!!! Everything I've tried from here has been beyond delicious. I've had there amazing tuna sandwich and very soft cookies. Today I had there turkey sandwich. I added avocado and Swiss it was out of this world the bread was one of the softest moist seeded rolls ever. I also had there soup of the day which was market vegetable. Since I'm not allowed into work until after 7 am, I ordered a fruit cup, an oatmeal granola bar-like thing shaped like a giant reeses peanut butter cup, and an Everything toasted bagel with cream cheese. Good proportions with the cream cheese. It was a denser style bagel, not a light and fluffy kind. As for the puck, I only took a few bites. It was a bit too gummy and dense for my liking, although I'm sure someone else would enjoy it, as I am used to eating more dry than wet granola bars. Fruit cup? Fresh, good stuff. You can tell that it hasn't been sitting in their cold case for generations. :) that's always nice. The staff there are very friendly and customer service oriented. I have been going to Ruby's once or twice a week for about 6 months. Great service, great food, and good coffee I'm not sure what happened, but the espresso seems worse recently. I'm assuming they started using a different bean. I plan to still go here for a sandwich or salad, but may go else where for espresso. read more

Ruby's is a great little place for a quick breakfast and some good coffee. The café itself is decorated nicely with seating inside and out. Don't go in expecting a full spread menu for a Saturday breakfast, but they do have some great pastries and other morning specials. After having just moved from San Francisco to Emeryville, I was feeling nervous about the decision. I mean, after all, in Hayes Valley, I was surrounded by every conceivable restaurant, bar and activity possible. It was going to be hard to beat. But, Ruby's Café was the perfect place to get to understand Emeryville. While enjoying a great mocha, the owner, Albert, came over and introduced himself. This led to a fantastic conversation about the area, where to go and what to do. The chicken avocado sandwich is quite tasty. I've only tried a few things to date. The service is meh...ironically enough most of my not so good service came from the owner, he isn't friendly. I love me some Ruby's. I too live in the building and Ruby's is a big part of the reason I love it here. Despite what some others have experienced I have always received wonderful attitude and service. Both Albert and the staff are always pleasant and welcoming. Most of the staff speak Spanish as a first language so some people may encounter a small language barrier but this has never been an issue for me and I don't speak a word of Spanish. Now I don't work in the area so am not usually around for lunch rush during the week but it can get quite busy which might explain some of the complaints. That said they get busy for a reason and it is definitely worth stopping in and making your own judgement. Great baked goods, coffee and Belgian waffles with fresh fruit on Saturdays (open until 2). My only complaints are that they aren't open Saturday after 2pm or Sunday and the plastic take out lids for the coffee need bigger vent holes. I always end up popping a fork or key through. All in all I find this to be a great locally owned spot that (outside of the lunch rush) is a great place to wind down or get started with an early morning latte. read more

The Ruby's BLTA, on a Duro roll, toasted... may just be the reason I will never stay vegetarian. This sandwich is my kryptonite and if it was only about this sandwich I'd give this place a 5. Ambiance - 3.5 - Expect the ambiance of a typical cafe, but with a diverse Emeryville working crowd that finds itself ritualizing visits to this tucked away gem. Various art and photography from locals decorate the walls and change form time to time. Quality - 4.5 - Everything has always been very fresh and felt really healthy. Even the roast beef and as I mentioned before (mmm bacon) BLTA. Service - 5 - Excellent and the staff is more than willing to help out with anything you may need. Understand that based on the ingredients and quantity of your order sometimes someone in line behind you will get their meal completed faster. Be patient people Christ! Menu Selection - 4.5 - Croissants, coffee, fruit drinks, Soups, Sandwiches and Salads make for a complete cafe experience. My only wish is that they offered more of the soups every day instead of just one. They are usually so good. Overall a great experience. This is a great place to go to enjoy good soup and a tasty sandwich. They are responsible for taking a good percentage of my income. (In a very filling way :) hehe) When it comes to those taco trucks I think all the City of Emeryville needs to do is not take away competition, but make the mobile eateries pay a % of property tax or higher fees to the city for doing business during the hours they do. It's only fair. Small businesses should NOT be punished for leasing buildings and or land. Choice is a GOOD thing and people that are against it are against having to innovate and stay fresh. Killer lunch spot in Emeryville.........and actually, one of VERY few eateries anywhere in this area (sorry - the Public Market doesn't even register a blip on the radar). I love this spot. Being an oasis of taste within a sea of corporate office spaces and warehouses, everything they do here is a hit. Typical lunch fare, meaning soups, salads, sandwiches, but there is nothing typical about the quality, as it is leaps above most other like establishments. All the sandwiches are on fresh baquette, portofino, focaccia, or sliced bread, and the quality of the meats (ahem - also some veggie fare) is a few notches up most delis. To boot they have the industrial size panini press, so I always get my sandwich HOT (or EXTRA hot, as apparently I have earned my own setting on the grill) and who doesn't like a hot sandwich? The best are the smoked turkey on baguette with a homemade aioli, and dried cranberries, and the thinly-sliced roast beef, on portofino, with tomato slices and a horseradish sauce. So damn good. Soups change daily, and are tasty, and the salads are delicious as well. They also do a morning thing, so coffee, pastries, bagels, and now even some breakfast food. But be aware - this place is good, and so there is nearly always a dozen people in line in front of you. But fret not, as things always move quickly. Over the years, I have gotten to know most of the staff here, and Tomas is usually manning the grill, so when he sees me walk in, he starts my sandwich, since the EXTRA hot ones take a little longer. And for the record - it's not "extra" hot, it is just grilled longer, so the baguette is nice and crunchy. All about texture, what I can I say? The owner is Albert or Al as he is known to most, and to me is a riot, since he is from NYC (as am I), and so ten seconds into most of our conversations, I starts dropping F-bombs, and he starts laughing and remembering his homeland (NYC). What a great guy, with a nice, outgoing personality, and he always makes a point of coming over to say hello, and makes you feel like a member of his family. Take heed young restauranteurs - THIS is the way to treat your customers. Not to mention the free cookies, chocolate, or other things he gives away, his generosity knows no bounds, and he must be a great guy to work for, as all his staff seem genuinely happy to be here. This is what you want, and what you need, while trying to refuel before running off to that next meeting. Place always has a diverse selection of music playing overhead, and there are always newspapers and many magazines stocked, so you can have a good read while eating your meal. Now open on Saturdays, I find myself going simply because finding a really good sandwich can be a challenge. With both Subway and Quizno's a few blocks away serving their generic crap, it's a wonder these places even stay in business, as there is simply no comparison to the sandwiches coming from Ruby's. I guess most people see 'cafe' on the sign, and think it's coffee and scones. Good. I don't need any more traffic being driven to this place, as I am impatient as it is, and don't need to wait in line any longer. Go eat where Jarrett eats down the street...... So my advice: if you find yourself anywhere in Emeryville during lunch hour, go here. For that matter, there is nothing comparable within probably 5 square miles. Bay Street? LOL. What, they got Pasta P and Rubio's. Public Market?? Listen, if you are eating there, than you are simply an idiot, as that Hall of Shame serves international cuisine fit for.......a school cafeteria.
