Update: New chicken tenders. One word: delicious! Might be the single best restaurant item to be had in La Crosse County. I know that isn't saying much, but still. Bring your own maple syrup. Your basic dive-y drive-in, but with some local flavor (see other reviews). Two very important words at Rudy', though: chicken nuggets. Best damn chicken nuggets on the planet. Who knew chicken nuggets could be so good. Word to the wise: bring your own malt vinegar and deli mustard for the fried fish/nuggets/fries. read more

The family consensus was 5 stars for Rudy's. They had the best root beer I've had in quite awhile, and the family order of fries was really good. Cheese curds, as always, should be sampled- they were also really good, I took the last 2 from my son and wife when they weren't looking. Don't tell them I got them, I haven't owned up to it yet. Ice cream was a great way to finish up. Crowded, but service was still fast & friendly. This is a place to stop when you're in La Crosse. read more

When I think of La Crosse and food the first place that pops in my head is Rudy's. Dbl Cheese burger Fries and a Root Beer Float. You gotta get some cheese curds or a chili dog or maybe a walnut burger, or a Monster burger, its all good. read more

Just visited Rudy's yesterday. Seemed like a cool place and I usually like drive-ins. My opinion quickly changed. I understand that opinions vary on how seriously to take Covid, but at Rudy's it seemed like they were LITERALLY still living in the 1950s. You would think a drive-in would be perfect for social distancing, but not at Rudy's! They have some precautions (no inside dining), but this seems pointless given their lack of any other precaution. I noticed right away there were tons of staff members all crammed into the building together with not a mask in sight. The servers were happily gliding around on their roller skates, but again no masks when coming up to people's car windows. They would stand there talking to you dropping off your food as their respiratory droplets dropped down upon you through your car window. When I was there their clientele skewed to the older side, a higher risk group for Covid. I should have just left, but at that point I had already ordered. The food was fine. Typical mediocre drive in food with cheap ingredients, nothing special - nothing bad. Greasy and satisfying. Given their lack of concern over providing even the most modest of precautionary measures for their employees and customers during Covid, I would generally question their commitment to food safety in general. Some might say I'm overreacting, but I know enough people who work in healthcare to know that I'm not. I only hope that no employee or customer who is vulnerable becomes infected (and subsequently, unknowingly infects others) while frequenting this place. They also only accept cash but they do have a fee ATM on site (that they make money from). This must be the last business on earth that is cash only - that's fine and all, but given the current ongoing pandemic many businesses are not even accepting cash. Overall, would have gone back again since the food is decent and drive-ins are fun. Won't be going back though because it is clear the owners obviously don't take health seriously. read more

Abby, our server, really engaged us in our food choices and helped us pick them best tasting items out the litany available on the menu. Sad that when it closes in the Fall because those are the best dang Cheese Curds I have ever had! We also love their Pizza Burgers because the cheese is on the inside and the crust is so crispy and delicious. I will usually also take a Root Beer Float with my meal. Not what we were expecting. Fried food prepared from frozen...not fresh and hand battered. A&W does it better...at least where I live. No free refills on Rudy's house root beer. A&W makes it fresh daily too and they keep it flowing until you say stop. I had the "NEW" BBQ Pork Sandwich. It was ok but should be half the price they are charging. Love Rudy's in the summer! Their food is underrated in my opinion, although it is mostly fast-food type stuff. Their turkey burgers are so juicy and flavorful. Food always comes out good. $1 root beer float! Great steal. The service previously was better than the most recent. The most recent, gave me a water filled milk jug when I asked her for a pitcher of water which I've received before. I'm not a dog... So there's that. It just doesn't get better than Rudy's. Try a burger with fried onions, tom, lettuce and mayo. Onion rings are amazing as are the cheese curds. The service is awesome and prompt. This is a classic part of La Crosse. You can eat in your car or at the picnic tables in the shade, and get served by waitresses on rollerskates, or eat inside if you prefer air conditioning. The root beer is brewed on site. You have to come prepared to eat unhealthy food -- the fried cheese curds are delicious and classic, as are the chili dogs. The buffalo burger is real buffalo meat and delicious, and all other food is pretty standard American food, a step above fast food joints. Your La Crosse tour (at least in summer) won't be totally complete without a visit here. read more

Went there today (on opening day) ordered a chili cheese dog with onions and a bacon cheese dog. The cheese on top of the chili dog was just melted processed cheese & I got the onions on the wrong hot dig. Very displeased with the food. Staff & atmosphere are the only reason I'm rating it more than one star. read more

Rudy's has been around probably longer than I can remember. If there were a top 15 list of things La Crosse Wisconsin is most well known for, Rudy's Drive-In would be one of the top 15 things. I believe that is the case, because of Rudy's being around for so long, it's outdoor atmosphere of the classic Drive-In feel, it being a family-friendly establishment, the classic Americana food, and the girls on roller skates who deliver the food make Rudy's Drive-In a La Crosse area classic. I have enjoyed taking my wife and son there occasionally. The only reason why I give this a four-star are three things... Number one they do not accept debit or credit cards; although at least they warn the customer and they have their own ATM in their defense. Number two the food can sometimes be very expensive, especially if you're taking the entire family. Number Three the food time can sometimes be longer than desired. Other than those three minor complaints, they do a great job in their customer service, they also give food that has been prepared with care, and they do a good job cleaning up after people when customers Drive their cars away or leave the picnic table area. read more

I always look forward to Rudy's opening - the root beer is fantastic and the food is pretty decent as well. While the food is pretty typical american/fast food (but SO much better than McDonalds or anything close to it), you really go for the root beer and atmosphere more than anything. It's not intended to be McDonalds speed, but I don't think we've ever waited very long for food at all - you could easily get on your way in 10 minutes or less. You have the option of sitting inside, on a picnic table, or in your car. I always love their chicken tenders and their hamburgers. The fries are great as well. I haven't actually found something that I don't like on their menu and they offer Gundersen's 500 club items - things with the logo are under 500 calories. Not necessarily common for a restaurant like that. They don't take cards yet but have an ATM inside, as well as being just a block from a kwik trip. It's just a great experience if nothing else- very summery atmosphere. read more

The food here is horrible, poor excuse for fast food and over priced. The waitstaff is generally good, though more often than not our order has been incorrect. This place is only open for the summer months, which is how they stay in business. The same reason people buy the McRib at Mc Donalds. It is, however, a staple of La Crosse it seems and for that reason I hope it stays going. Car Hops are fun, but what you get for what you pay does not justify the trip for me. read more

Root Beer and ice creams are fine. Seems like the rest of the menu is low quality and pre-packaged,frozen. Chili dogs are nuked in the bun and way over cooked. Definitely has gone down hill...we've been long time customers but likely will not return after our third poor experience this season. read more
