Honestly the new and the old Rudy's are both good, just different. For someone looking for a bar with a feeling of open space (not necessarily not busy, just not dark and brooding inside) with a lot of hipsters this is the place for you. The beer selection is pretty good. I didn't eat so I can't speak to that, but the service was not exactly excellent. I was drinking diet sodas most of the night, which I know can't normally make a lot of money on tips and income. However, one has to consider the designated drivers who bring everyone there. Hello? The bartender at one point pointed his finger to scan the crowd, looked right past me (only one waiting) and then moved to the other side of the bar. Being overlooked happened a couple times. I literally sat as people on either side of me who had just arrived got served before I did. Like I said, I get it, sodas don't make a ton of money on tips or income usually. But 1.) I DO tip on sodas 2.) I had bought beer and my friends were buying drinks all night and 3.) Wouldn't you want to support the person that drove all the people who chose to go there from over 1/2 an hour away? Made my choice easier. We were really happy to come back to New Haven and see Rudy's. The location is great and the size and light are both so much nicer than the old closed in, dark rooms that made the Rudy's in the original spot so memorable. This new space is much brighter and more open with a nice long bar and an open feel. It maintains some of the old tables and walls from the old place, which is a nice touch. The new place has all these tin signs on the wall and I think they were placed on the wall too neatly. It looks, to some degree, like TOO new, but made to look rustic. That's my only complaint. I just don't think there need to be all that many signs because it takes away from the open almost Brooklyn-ish feel of the joint. Everything else is really nice. The fries are excellent as always (chipotle mayo is the best!) and beer selection just as great. I wish the bathroom had more than 2 stalls, but whatever. We've been to Rudy's dozens of times since they moved. In general I really like the place. The waitresses are solid and the bus boys are amazing. Water refilled before you empty your glass and they'll fill your drink orders or bring your food out if the waitress is busy. The atmosphere is VERY hipster during the school year. The staff always has that hipster vibe. The clientele while Yale is in session is ultra-hipster. When Yale is not in session the whole vibe changes. We went last night, for example, and there was football on the Bar TVs, a pair of older couples, and a black guy wearing a basketball jersey un-ironically with a girl with a what I'm told is an expensive "Coach" bag. Not the normal clientele you'd see other times of the year. It was also pretty empty. When we got there around 8:30 for dinner on a Friday half of the tables were empty which I have never seen before. The drinks are often very strong which is always a positive. The full bar is solid with some interesting choices but not an "everything you could ever want" bar. They will always over cook your burgers so if you order medium-well you'll get a burger cooked well-done, so keep that in mind when ordering. I like my burgers medium well, so here I order it medium. It is a good, homemade burger. They don't mind substitutions at all, I've had the wait staff recommend them before. The frites are generally really great and the sauces too. This is the reason we come back over and over. The fries or "frites" are usually the twice fried, super crispy, variety. Last night however (maybe because Yale was out?) the fries appeared to be out of a bag and were soggy and disappointing. First time that has ever happened to us. I hope it was a one time thing because if it happens again we will probably start going elsewhere. When the fries/frites are good the sauce is what makes it amazing. Their sauces are pretty amazing and change a bit sometimes. Any meal that comes with fries comes with a sauce. We like to get an extra sauce for each meal. If we get just fries and drinks we get a couple extra sauces per fries order (get one per 2 or 3 people). We always get the thai-peanut sauce, and one of the spicy-mayo based sauces, then rotate through the others. read more

Today I enjoyed a delicious lunch at Rudy's Belgian French fried potatoes and cocktail lounge. My fam and I were greeted by Jamie, a young attractive and motivated bartender. I ordered an Irish coffee which was prepared delicately with the perfect ration of Jameson. Once presented with the menu I knew I was headed for crusty town. Chefs Rob and Jules came out to show proper respect. Several hand kisses and scholarly nods later the duo was on their way. I engaged with my colleagues, for what felt like a few minutes before Jamie was carrying our food out, his body is toned to athletic precision so the food did not suffer from any shaking or sharp movements. I've attached photos. I can honestly say that the food tasted better after each bite. Chefs Rob and Jules prepared my food with passion and charisma (based on taste and aroma). We completed our meals and were prepared to tackle the day's endeavors with our renewed energy levels. Jamie was efficient with the check payment and my team was impressed with the low prices. I'd recommend this place for work meetings and 2nd dates (you'll want to build report with your woman so she isn't attracted to Jamie), and lunch collaborations with your peoples. read more

So far our favorite place to get some good beer! They have delerium and unibroue on tap which are our favorite beers. The food is also very good, the calamari is absolutely delicious!! So I went here a little while ago with some friends. My buddy went to use the bathroom and when he walked back from the bathroom he forgot to put his mask on. Some random blonde sitting at the bar was a total bitch acting hysterically about him putting his mask on. My buddy looked at her like she had five heads. NOT because he's some stupid anti masker but because of her crazy attitude. After being a royal cunt she said she worked there and told the bar tender to close his tab. My question is if a complete stranger is a total bitch to you, wouldn't you look at them like they have five heads? Then after that the bar tender walks over to our table and demands to see my buddy's mask. So he shows him his mask and the bar tender told him he's lying that's not his mask. Okay...? Things got really weird and hostile for something that could have a been a nicer conversation. Not to mention THEY WERE NOT SERVING FOOD AND ONLY DRINKS- so they want to act all righteous and they're not even following the state protocols. Total bunch of tools here. How much slack do you cut one of the few restaurants in town open during a hurricane? Quite a bit, but still.... I've been to the "new" Rudy's several times. I like the food, the atmosphere, and usually, the servers. This time not so much. Burgers and frites are always good, but this time I ordered bánh mì, something I have never seen on any menu in Connecticut. It was unlike any I've ever had anywhere else, essentially a massive slab of brisket on a baguette, topped with some sliced cucumbers and shredded carrots. The only discernible flavor was that of the meat, everything else was merely decoration. Earlier Irene F wrote that "the staff has become douchier" since the move to the new location. I had not experienced that in previous visits, but this time, we certainly did. Our original bartenter-server was great, efficiently moving between the bar and the tables. Unfortunately, we were there during a shift change and she left shortly after delivering our drinks and putting in our order. From that point on were were completely on our own. By this point there were no more than six people in the place. Nevertheless, the bartender, apparently a back-up named Paul, spent all his time horsing around with a couple of his friends at the end of the bar. Since it was clear he wasn't coming to us, we went up to the bar for another round of drinks, and then to get the check. The check folder, by the way, was thrown at me without a word, picked up without a word, and the receipt thrown back without a word. Came here on a quiet Sunday (right before Thanksgiving break). They have a great beer selection (both local crafts as well as imported). They have a few TVs set to sports, and a considerable amount of seating, including the back room which was very, very dimly lit. They played some good jams, and while we didn't get any food, we saw a lot of it come out and they looked/smelled delicious. But alas, we had a dinner reservation. If I were to ever open a dive bar, I'd walk into Rudy's with a digital camera and a notebook. This place is so *dive* that it seems orchestrated. This is an old, neighborhood bar that in the past 15 or so years has become overrun by artists and hipsters. There's still the "neighborhood" contingent, to keep the "dive" status intact, but as the night goes on, white belts and track bikes outnumber fire department t-shirts. Somewhat recently purchased by a Belgian ex-pat, they've seen a shift that has brought them amazing Frites (with the prerequisite 30 or so dipping sauces) and an extensive beer list that could make Delaney's jealous. Beer snobs have their choice of glassware, and beer slobs can still get pitchers of PBR or the High Life. Their live bands can be hit or miss, but I can't count the number of bands I've seen there that now garner $40 tickets elsewhere. The jukebox isn't as cool as it used to be -- bartenders would make mix CDs -- it had everything -- but it's still worth sinking a few hard earned singles into. read more

Wow! I had such high hopes for this place, and of course I was extremely disappointed by the usual sub-par customer service found in most New Haven pubs. The "bouncer" and his cronies were smoking outside with the smoke coming into the restaurant. The host was not welcoming on our entrance, or our departure. The bartenders were weird, non-social, and on their Facebook the entire time. Difficult to get a drink when it wasn't busy at all. The food was nothing special. Greasy over cooked "Waffles" (fries) and the special sauce was thick and fatty mayo with some bland seasoning. Don't waste your time here. This dark, wooden bar is a great place to hear the local bands of New Haven, where Joy Division still wields considerable influence. The mixed crowd of townies, old men, hipsters, and students makes this one of my favorite places to get a quick beer or shoot whiskey. Be prepared to meet people here, because you will. This is a pretty nice spot for a dive bar. I passed by here a couple times so I decided to check it out. They offer a variety of beer, so this place might not be for everyone if you don't drink beer. The one thing that turned me off was when we walked in and sat at the bar, the bartender seemed annoyed that we sat down. A few minutes passed and he came over to us and said "do you know what you want?" It just sounded a bit rude so we told him never mind and walked out. The food is okay, it's not great. I went here with two other people around lunch time. It wasn't busy at all but the service was bad and slow. Their utensils were dirty so as they glasses. It still had lipstick stains on it, we asked them to be changed and when the waitress did the glass still had a lipstick stain on it. I really think that was disgusting. The fries were good. Usually very crowded. Had to pay a cover for the very mediocre DJ fading and mixing the same shit you hear on the radio so two people could dance their dreams come true. Decent beer selection and specials. On another visit, two of us were denied table service amongst several open tables due to our wildly insufficient plans to order only frites and several drinks. This waitress must hate making money and having easy tables. Also once had a (seemingly homeless) person sitting several stools down from me at the bar complaining to another patron about how she gets food stamps and can't afford food otherwise.. Why are you at this bar and how can you afford a beer here??? Piss poor budgeting, but it works and that's what makes this country great. We have been coming here for the past 4 years, and our favorite dish has been moule frites. There is a new chef at Rudy's, however, and the menu has changed quite a bit. NO MORE MOULE FRITES. Rudy's has been our go to bar food location for years. I have searched far and wide and have yet to taste better fries (sorry, Duckfat, Portland). The beer selection is eclectic, with a bit more European influence than other craft beer bars in the area. The other food on the menu is usually a hit, with the occasional misstep as they keep the menu seasonal (ask for advice, the staff will be candid). For those looking for a bar atmosphere, but not wanting fried food, there are decent salads & entrees that haven't come close to the deep fryer (beet salad and Caesar are both well done). Rudy's is a go-to for me and my co-workers after practically every day of work. they have a pretty great selection of beers and a pretty good veggie burger. their fries are great with many dip options. *bonus, there's a kind of secret place to sit outside their backdoor. it's nothing fancy, but it's a nice place to hang for a smoke with your brew (as some of us do). i may be slightly partial, as Rudy's, for me, symbolizes the relaxing end of a long workday, but go there for no other reason than to relax and you'll be grateful for it. read more

"New Rudy's" actually does pretty well in its role as a bar/restaurant rather than the dark, dingy, charming dive that it once was. The frites are still excellent. The sauces are still excellent. Honestly, the only reason I don't go even more often is that Prime 16 is a little closer, a little cheaper, and a little tastier. Rudy's fries and sauces remind me of Wurstküche in Downtown L.A. and I've been coming here with my friends probably once every few weeks when school's in session. It's a relatively accessible place in terms of price and seating. It does tend to get crowded during high-traffic times such as dinner and the weekends. Some people have said that Prime 16 has better burgers, but I've only been there once and have not been able to get in since due to their long wait times, so I'd much rather go to Rudy's and just wait 10-15 minutes for a seat and similarly fantastic burger at slightly less-expensive prices. My advice, splurge a little and get the fried egg for $1.50 extra like I do with the Classic Burger. I've had their moules frites and while they were good, they weren't very filling or memorable. For that, I'd still recommend getting one of their burgers. Another item I'd really recommend is the beer-battered cod, which was really delicious and fresh when I ordered it. That said, I celebrated my birthday here on a Friday night a couple months ago and when I called a week in advance, the restaurant said they didn't do reservations for large groups, unless I wanted to rent the back room for $350, which was a bit ridiculous. Anyway, they suggested that I just come the night of and commandeer whatever open tables were available in the back room, which has no waitstaff filling orders. I planned on having 15-20 folks join, but it turned out over 30 people came. It took a while, but we managed to absorb as many tables and chairs to accommodate our group as possible, splitting us into two parties. I had their take on the Vietnamese banh mi that night and it was pretty decent (the roast beef kimchi sandwich at Atticus is good too). Ordering at the bar and having the food bused out wasn't too much trouble other than folks getting food at various times, often not in the order they were placed. Still, everyone eventually got their food and best of all, since we ordered at the bar and each person paid their own tab, there was no large bill to worry about dividing and there was no possibility for someone to leave us short, which happens frequently with large group meals. I forget to mention, but I'm allergic to alcohol so while I have no opinion to their beer selection, my friends seem to think it's good, albeit somewhat pricier than other establishments nearby. Okay, so two hours after I wrote the above review I went to Rudy's for a burger, below is my latest experience: 1) Walk in the door and was immediately seated (party of two at 6p on a Sat. when the Packers haven't yet started playing the 49'ers). 2) Get our glasses of water and menus. We already know what we want and order. We receive our napkins and silverware. 3) My Classic Burger with fried egg (+ Belgian frites with pesto mayo sauce) arrive along with my friend's New Haven Burger. 4) Here's the good part: I grab it with both my hands and try to put it in my mouth, but even as I unhinge my jaw it doesn't fit! Then it starts dripping all over my mouth and hands and when I finally wrap my mouth around it, I feel like I'm going to gag... Seriously, I've had plenty before and this is the first time this has happened. Perhaps those I've had in the past were smaller? 5) I lick my fingers with a smile. The napkin on my lap is a mess and I think my leg has fallen asleep. We get the bill (20% tip!) and I go wash up in the restroom. 6) Now I'm going to nap. read more

Went to Rudy's yesterday for lunch with some buddies, heard that they have one of the best burgers in the city so I decided to check it out. The place is very divey, old beer signs all over the bar, cool decor. The waitress was not very inviting, she was very timid. The seating might have been the most uncomfortable I have ever been. We found out that they were only serving brunch, which was a let down... we wanted burgers! They only had 2 burgers offered during brunch... yet it was 1pm in the afternoon. The beer selection is pretty good. A lot of micro brews. I ordered a Rogue Dead Guy. We split the grand fry for the table- it came with 3 sauces.... this was sufficient for the table- i'd recommend the Aioli sauce. When the burgers came out they were cold and the swiss cheese on the burger was not even melted. I guess it was good, for a cold burger... BEWARE IT IS EXPENSIVE! 5 of us, 5 burgers with only one beer (rest water) was 100$ With all things considered, I would not go back to Rudy's. read more
