I am so thankful we found Ruff Haus Pets! We just recently moved to the area and found this amazing store nearby! They have pretty much everything you could want and need for your pets! For my cats' birthday, we bought toys and a super fun bed that they are just obsessed with! We also bought them a Ruff Box, which is similar to a Chewy Box. I came here after checking on their website if they had a rabbit based food for cats as one of my cats needs to change his diet. I was pleasantly surprised with how the employees greeted us at the door with friendly smiles. Dylan helped me find some great options for my cat and had nice suggestions on what could help his belly troubles. Then my friend and I walked the store and I filled my basket with lots of stuff for my cats and my dog. This store has so many different options for food, treats, toys, and other supplies. Been here a few times. The staff is usually pretty helpful. I really like all the single ingredient treats! The last time I went though I was double charged for the supplements I got which were already over $40. I noticed before getting home and turned around. The manager was quick to correct but the employees mentioned that this happens all the time which I thought was not a great thing to say. It's a more premium pet store so it is a bit pricey but they have a good selection of healthy food and cbd treats which my anxious puppy needs. read more

My coworker lives right around the corner from this place and recommended I come here for all my pet needs. It's right around the corner from the Rockwell Brown Line stop and extremely easy to get to. They have everything to satisfy your pet's needs. My cat is an extremely picky eater and I'm struggling to find something that works for him. When I mentioned that to the store employee, he literally dropped everything he was doing and ran around the store trying to find the perfect match for my cat. I was able to get a bunch of poke bowls, tuna treats and even grabbed a few toys. My cat ended up loving everything I got (for once) so I really appreciate the time the employee took to help me out. He accidentally forgot to put one of the cans that I bought in the bag, but when I left, he called me right away to let me know and I was able to come back and get it. He ended up putting the price of the can as store credit. Talk about perfect service! There's also an adorable cute little cat that lives in the store (I think). When I walked in, it was laying on the cat tree and I couldn't help but sit there and pet it for a while. I am a regular customer here at Ruff Haus Pets, and I enjoy shopping here as well as seeing the new goods that they have on display. I am a fur parent to two cats and one dog that's why my purchases here for their needs and maintenance are so consistent. They are all high maintenance, which is why I don't always have money to spend on myself, but that's good since I adore them. The staff has always been courteous and knowledgeable, and when I have been unable to locate what I am looking for in their store, they always try to inquire amongst themselves as to whether they still have stock of that particular product available. They have everything I need to meet the demands of my pet. In addition, they constantly provide the highest level of client service. It comes highly recommended! I recently started buying food ,treats,clothes, doggie shoes a year go for my 2 dogs little chihuahua and cocker spaniel . Unfortunately cocker spaniel passed away from old age. Unfortunately I'm a customer of this store. I buy Fromm's for my dogs and this store is a convenient location. It ends there. I was advised by my veterinarian to go with grain-in food. A DVM. So I asked this store if they could get me the grain-inclusive food I wanted. The manager proceeded to push his opinions and 'research' about grain-free food on me. Not only that but when I mentioned my dogs are Samoyeds he proceeded to tell me that pure-bred dogs like mine get sick and die (he even elaborated to tell me of a friends dog whose paw had to be amputated due to bone cancer) and THEN tells me that stupid people get them as status symbols. Yes! A high-end pet store manager said this to me, a paying customer. Not only that but I sent my sister in for a bag recently and they didn't bother to help her get the bag ($87 bag). My high status dogs are now too good for this RUDE and misinformation pushing store. In the words of Vivian Ward 'Big Mistake. Big. Huge.' Good day. read more

At first I thought maybe they were having a bad day but every time they have an attitude and just act arrogant, specifically the tall guy that wears all black and has long hair. 3rd poor experience here . 2 stars b/c they are pretty well stocked. Needs to re-calibrate attitudes among staff including management. 1) Today's experience: they were so focused on stocking and back-room tasks and made it clear I was just an annoyance--------2 staff members at different points. 2) 1 month ago I was in the store when an older woman walked in with her mask hanging off 1 ear. She's about 3 steps in and guy at the front register YELLS in a mean voice across the store at her. COVID is important but I expect store staff to be civil about it at a minimum. Even to pleasantly remind someone about their mask. Rather than educate that worker, I overheared the supervisor support his behavior. 3) In the Spring a co-shopper gave me a couple treats out of a bag she just bought (we had been chatting about dog tummy troubles). At the register a few minutes later a worker implies I opened a store bag, and gives me a sideways reprimand. Even after I explain where I got them from, she doesn't apologize... Anyway my point is that this store seems to have a top-down problem with how they regard/treat their customers. A little too close to the DMV experience for my taste and I try to go elsewhere now. I. Am. The. Most. Annoying. Customer. .... with .... The. Most. Annoying. Cat. The given name of my hairball of perpetual over-neediness is Halpert. He is a ridiculously cute cat. Dumb looking with his blue crossed eyes (walks into furniture daily) and dumb acting (walks into furniture daily). Nevertheless, I love him. (Why would I voluntarily keep something that I hated?) I am that pet owner that seemingly spoils their pet with food that costs more than their own. The cost of feeding my domesticated, beloved pest is more than justified. Other than vet care, I don't have to pay for anything to maintain his existence asides from cat litter and food. So, $18 dollars per 1.5 months for his food is nothing. Nothing to compared to the annual cost of my wasabi peas addiction. Anyway, I want to feed the Fuzzbutt the best food money can buy. He deserves it for being so gosh-darn cute. It turns out that he's allergic to grain (very common) and intolerant of poultry. The poultry can't be confirmed, as allergies can be extremely hard to pinpoint. Poor Halpert has been itchy for the past few weeks and the vet put him on anti-histamines. Meh. H-pert almost always has been fed a grain-free diet, but like every cat he is damn finicky. In a snotty way, too. He goes through a "I am NOT pleased. Give me something else or I won't headbutt you like a cute cat" phase twice a year. I'm thinking ... why are domesticated cats so damn picky compared to their wild counterparts? Lions, jaguars, and what have you eat whatever they can find! Would a tiger pass a deer carcass simply because he'd rather have boar? Yeahhhh, no. Seriously, Halpert would not survive five minutes outside my door. Ok, so I give him samples of various dry food brands. He likes some, and physically reacts negatively to others. He does really well on wet food, but it's expensive and gross (no meat in this household). Alas, he must be fed something good to reduce his cries of discontentment. A happy, fed Rodent is a slightly quieter Rodent. Ruff Haus is a mere 5 minutes away from my residence and adjacent to Rockwell CTA. I can't really avoid this place. I've purchased food and sought out advice from the owner from this super cute (not as cute as Halpert, mind you) pet store many a times. The owner, Rich, knows a little too much about cats and dogs. Not in a TMI or useless knowledge kind of way. If you have any questions at all, he's more than happy to answer. He's like, a guru. He should start his own pet advice column in the Redeye. I ask him questions every single time I come to buy Smelly something. Examples of such questions: "Buffalo or venison, which flavor do cats prefer? I thought peas were hypoallergenic carbohydrates? Why is there chicory root [or "chick-owee woot" with my slight Asian accent] in cat food? How are pheasants nutritionally better than chicken?" God, did I really need to ask these questions? I'm buying *cat food*, not a car. Fortunately, I never get that "Okay, lady. Can you *just* leave already? Just because you're the only person in the entire store doesn't mean you should stay until the next customer comes in" attitude with nods and eyes directed towards the door. That's good. I like that. Very much. Ruff Haus Pets is super. There's enough treats, food, and toys to almost make a dog implode from over-stimulation. Such brands they carry here include Innova, California Natural, Evanger's, Wellness, Nature's Variety, Orijen, and plenty more. Ruff Haus is the perfect neighborhood natural pet store. While waiting by the Rockwell Brown Line Station for the train to pass, I suddenly squeal "OOH! Look, dog stuff!," and grab my husband's arm, and drag him into the store. It was rather refreshing to go into a pet place that did not resemble a warehouse. I assume this is what one would consider a "pet boutique." A stunning variety of collars, leashes, food, toys, and all possible manner of things to spoil the special furry friend (canine or feline) in your life. Since my girl is a spoiled brat, I knew that I would have to get her something. We were greeted kindly, and asked if we could be helped in finding anything in particular. Nope, just browsing. And I love a place that allows you to browse without breathing down your neck. Well, I knew she needed a new collar, and I was in love with a thick black leather studded one. But gazing at the $65 price tag, made me think twice. But I ended up choosing a smaller red leather studded one. (By the way, my dog looks bad-ass wearing it.) I did enjoy the visit here, and hopefully I can find a place closer to home similar to this, so I can splurge a little every once in a while on my baby. read more

This place and its owner are an invaluable resource to pet owners in Lincoln Square. One of the best pet boutiques in the city, fer sure. The merch selection at Ruff Haus is great. Nice array of premium foods, including frozen raw. Decent assortment of toys, both hip/expensive and cute/reasonably priced. Plenty of cute collars & leashes, from leather to hemp. A very nice sampling of high-quality beds, bowls, etc. And a swell rotating supply of seasonal/holiday goods (I Heart Obama collar? Lobster Halloween costume? Obnoxious, squawking, Santa-hatted rubber chicken? YES, PLEASE). The best part is, Rich the owner knows his stuff. He's there most of the time, eager to answer your questions help you choose the right product for your pet, without forcing the sale. Rich is also involved in animal rescue, as all responsible pet industry professionals ought to be. The guy is good people, and it makes for great business. Oh, it's also the best-decorated pet boutique in town. Framed albums on the wall, stylish window displays, a bicycle hanging from the ceiling... my dog doesn't give a crap (she heads straight for the dehydrated cow-parts) but I appreciate the decor. read more

This is a wonderful little local pet store. The owner is very friendly and willing to help whenever possible. And! the best part! There are often pets inside. There's a little black cat and a not so little dog that sometimes, okay I visit just to pet. But whatever, that's not weird. They have a great selection of organic pet food and health supplies. My only complaint is they lack a vast selection of cat toys. That isn't to say that they don't have a good selection: they do. Nor am I saying it is their fault.The cat toy market seems to not live up to the standards of my finicky cats who much prefer a certain type of rattley fur mouse that no one ever carries. Very friendly staff and nice store layout. We got our cat some really cute bowls there that look like takeout containers. There were some $50 pet bowls but if you are going to spend that type of cash on a kibble bowl, more power to you I guess. If you are looking for Wellness brand food, Pine Litter, etc. this is also the place for you. This shop is right on the way to my vets office, so when I am in the area I tend to stop in. I don't have a cat or dog either, but since I have rats, who can play with and eat most anything, I still stop buy and usually wind up buying something. The staff here is very helpful and have even offered to special order items for me in the past (paper pellet cat litter if you must know my rats are litter trained). They do have a really nice selection of toys and treats here for both cats and dogs. (and rats but they don't know that yet well if they see this they will know). There are some treats here that my boys like that I can't find in other stores. They have some treats called grandmas which are all natural crunchy meat balls. My rats love the chicken parmasean ones. They also have all the Zukes treats your heart desires. If you get lucky you'll see the two adorable shop kitties. Spot and Cisco. I am glad that on a whim I decided to stop in, my boys are now the most spoiled rats on the planet. read more

As we were clueless new dog owners, Rich showed us the options for a harness and once we chose one he helped us to size it correctly. I've never gotten that kind of service from Pet Smart. Great little pet store, with a wide variety, located right next to the Rockwell Brown stop. Not only is this store conveniently located to me, I enjoy patronizing locally owned businesses. The owner is extremely friendly and knowledgeable when it comes to the concerns of your pets, and especially their food. My Pug has bad allergies; therefore, he needs special organic food, which has been an immense help---Actually, it has cured him of most (if not all) sneezing and scratching. The only con to feeding my spoiled Pug organic food, is that he has become a stinky fish face:( Prices: Be prepared to pay slightly more than you would at a Petsmart or Petco, but the quality, in my opinion, is well worth it. Listen, at the age of 37, I do not have kids---maybe I'm sterile---who knows? Since there are no kiddos for me, the Pug is my spoiled and pampered child. Rich is super nice and helpful. He will really help you with picking out the right food for your pet. When I needed to switch food for my picky cat, he gave me a ton of samples to let my cat make the choice. Don't forget to check out the raw food section. My dog is not on a raw diet, but they do carry some raw treats. My dog loves the frozen raw bones. It's a really nice treat for her in the summer. OK...who am I fooling, she gets them year round! The only bad thing, is that Michele Gandolfo isn't grooming here any more. Boo. So I have to walk a little farther to Foster at Oakley. She opened her own place. Yeah. My dog loves it at Ruff Haus. I live right by and it's really nice to have a place so close to home that sells high quality pet food. They have a really nice selection of leashes and collars. The collars and leashes are a little on the pricey side, but he has a really nice selection. He even carries Martingale style collars. But beware of the zip leash. It's an awesome leash when it's working, but if it unravels at the wrong time...it could be devastating. I bought 2 and they both unraveled, setting my dog running wild! With that being said, the service is usually top notch. Whenever my dog needs a new collar, Rich really spends time fitting her properly. He even helped with putting on an e-collar (from the vet). Just off the brown line at Rockwell, Ruff Haus is one of a group of wonderful little neighborhood stores. And it really is kind of small. If you're looking for Petco-style selection, don't bother coming here. But if you're looking for a friendly knowledgeable staff, and wonderful products, including a very good selection of natural and organic pet foods, by all means check it out. My cat is addicted to Halo Pets chicken Liv-a-Littles which can be pricey. I get a good price when I buy a case here. And this isn't just about a bargain, it's about a place where they're willing go the extra distance for their customers. One thing: I find it a bit dog-centric, but that doesn't mean I won't find wonderful things for my cat. That's just FYI. read more

I've been buying my food and pet supplies at Ruff Haus for years but somehow haven't gotten around to writing a review yet. The owner, Rich, is a veritable fount of information regarding dog food and I believe he briefly served on a rescue group's volunteer board of directors as their director of nutrition. He is a great resource when you have a picky dog (as I do) and has always been able to find something that my dog likes. I now raw feed and Ruff Haus is the only (or one of the very few) stores that carries my brand of food (Companion, made in Milwaukee.) My dog also likes the wide variety of all natural treats, chewy things, and collars/leashes. Speaking of chewy things, Ruff Haus also has a shop cat named Cisco who loves to torment my dog with his very presence. Taking my dog to Ruff Haus has been a good way to train "leave it!" As mentioned above, Rich does have some ties to the local rescue scene and has been a great resource to clients who are seeking training, boarding, dog-walking or pet-sitting, or maybe even a place to find a second furry pal. He's always willing to go the extra mile for his clients and that's what keeps me going back. Yeah, the goods at Ruff Haus might be a little more expensive than Petco/Petsmart, but the quality is higher as well - and let's face it, pet ownership is expensive and we owe it to our pets to take care of them as best we can. (Lest anyone think that Rich is the only employee, I also have interacted with Rory who works on Sundays and he's very smart and kind to my dog as well.) Like many others on Yelp, I was sad to see Michele the groomer leave Ruff Haus but I was happy to hear that she'd opened her own business not far away. Great location and great selection of high quality, well priced products. The employees are knowledgeable and thorough, and will generally give you all the attention you need to make a decision. They helped me a lot when I was planning for my puppy and going through the early stages of figuring out what I needed. As much as I try to think of this as my friendly neighborhood pet store, though, I just can't make it work in my head that way. The employees are sometimes totally friendly and welcoming, but other times the same exact employees will be sort of distant and snobby and rude. It's really weird. I feel like I never know if they'll be in a good mood when I walk in. I keep my fingers crossed. I find myself headed to 4 Legs over on Damen more often - even though they charge higher prices and are not as conveniently located for me, they are consistently friendly and helpful every single time, and have a similar great selection. read more

My dog literally PULLS me into Ruff Haus whenever we walk past it, which is nearly every day since I live just down the block. She goes bananas because Rich, the owner, gives her a treat every time we step inside. Then I end up buying something--a bone, toy or treat--and she is happy. But I'm happy, too, because Rich is super nice and knowledgeable, and it gives me the warm fuzzies to be able to shop at a local store for pet stuff. We also buy our food here for both the cat and dog, and since they have a wide variety, we're always trying something different. The pets haven't complained yet! As far as price goes, I think it's pretty comparable to the local store we shopped at in Ukrainian Village before we moved. If you're used to supporting independent businesses that sell organic pet food, you won't be surprised by the prices. To me, becoming a regular at a store is all about the little things. At Ruff Haus water is available for the dogs, other pets hang out, friendly neighbors drop in (which makes for good conversation) and my dog tail doesn't stop wagging. It's a great place! read more

Nice little pet store right off of the Rockwell Brown Line stop. Seems like they have some exclusive stuff here that you can't get from the likes of Petco & PetSmart. My buddy told me I needed to get the catnip banana for my cat as it supposedly drives them wild. Not only did I get her the catnip banana, but I got her the cant anchovy as well. The anchovy was a winner but the banana has yet to receive decent attention LOL. They also seem to have healthy pet options here as well. read more

I am always pleased with Ruff Haus. They have very high quality products, a great space and friendly responsive people working there. The store is always clean and I can find whatever I want. I have purchased my dog's (Akita) food, Rolled leather collar, dog tags, car restraint, treats and toothpaste here. It is one of the few carriers of Innova and Evo dog food in the area. I can always count on Rich, the owner for any recommendations and my Akita loves him. I just learned that they do carry kosher dog food (I never even knew there was such of a thing) along with their other supplies and they have raw food for those who prefer it as well. Once you have been here you will cringe at the though of going to any Petsmart or Petco. I wish I lived a little closer, but it is well worth the trip to get quality food and supplies for my fine furry friend. read more
