I only happened to know of this place through advertising at a nearby movie theater, so after the movie we were wanting to go get a drink and check it out. Parking was difficult as it was all street parking and we were unable to find any spots that felt safe within a few blocks so we parked in a parking garage and walked a few blocks. The bar is cute and tiny with energetic music playing and friendly bartenders. It is a bit hard to carry a conversation here so you really have to be in close quarters with the other person. The drink menu has many awesome rum drink choices and they do have a 4-7 pm weekday happy hour. Drink prices are on par with other bars that serve cocktails and on average about $15. They have food and snacks, which I did not get but looked like a decent option. They also have a small outside seating area. It was a great vibe and I notice a wide age group there. I asked the bartender how long they've been around and they said 15 years. I can't believe I haven't been here before. That do charge a 3% credit card fee so cash is king. I would definitely like to come back and try some of their other rum drinks. It does feel like they might be a little too heavy handed in the ice but the drinks are delicious and you can taste the rum in a good way. read more

Came in here around 6pm on a Sunday as a group of 9, there was another couple at the bar but otherwise it was just us. It's dark inside, a couple tiny windows near the top of the walls, basement-style but the vibe is eclectic and cute. It's small so there was nowhere ideal for us to sit but We sat at a few tables in the corner, bringing them together in a little L shape - it worked. The server was nice, i tried the happy hour rum punch which was super yummy and only $6. The rest of the group tried a bunch of other cocktails and really liked them for the most part. They loved the glassware and even bought a few of the branded cups the bar sells to take home with us. The outdoor area was also very cute, intimate and enclosed enough to feel private but still have good lighting. If it wasn't so chilly and rainy we would have sat outside. Love this place. It's perfect for the winter. It is warm and cozy on the inside and they have a variety of warm drinks that are delicious. I can't believe I have not been to the Rum Club until now! Really cute and tiny cozy cocktail bar with friendly staff. We went specifically to try their famous Hot Buttered Rum for the Christmas holiday. It was delicious. The cocktail is served perfectly warm with Jamaican rum blend, butter, sugar, bitters and winter spices. I absolutely loved the smooth buttery flavor. It was easy to drink. I found the flavor familiar with a touch of uniqueness. We also tried their Deviled Eggs -pomegranate beet pickled eggs with horseradish sorfrito and herbs. Came by to check out Rum Club as we were waiting for our reservation at another place but I never knew the place existed before! Their location might be missed but they are part of the quad of bar casa vale, jackies, and slammer tavern so walking distance from all these places. They have a small outdoor area which is a switch from their indoor area since it's much dinner and gives a small speakeasy vibe without being a speakeasy. Look at the walls because who doesn't love a dog painting. haha. They serve food here but since we came for drinks we just checked out their specials on the board. On the board they have a cocktail and punch special so be sure to check it out - this time they had an El Diablo (tequila mule). They also seem to have a happy hour time and menu but we missed it this visit so come before 6 on the weekdays. Solid spot for drinks in the area which a cool ambiance. I've driven by the Rum Club many times, so I had high hopes when I finally visited. My friend and I decided to check it out after dinner one evening. The interior is small..A horseshoe shaped bar with tables around the perimeter, wallpaper with hummingbirds, Christmas lights, dark, and loud. It was a vibe. We chose to sit at the bar. Our server was curt and seemed to cater more to the regulars than new customers. My friend ordered the Rum Punch which he said tasted like bath water. He also finished his cocktail in 3 sips. Definitely has the classic tiki bar vibe without being kitschy or pretentious. Service was quick and friendly. Exceeded expectations! Service: great; attentive and went beyond what was required Atmosphere: Dark. Somewhat loud, modern electronic/dance-y music. Not quite my scene, but it felt professional and local. Most rum bars are kitschy tropical and not very polished. Hale Pele already has polished tiki down, so Rum Club blazes their own distinctly non-tiki aesthetic trail, while not falling into kitsch of any variety. It just felt very Portland. Drinks: Tasty and unique! Heavy focus on originals, using fresh ingredients in novel combinations. My party wasn't always satisfied with what they received,* but I liked my drinks just fine, especially the Space Warrior, which had a pleasant black pepper kick (though why they listed blue curaçao in the menu as simply "blue" I'm at a loss). Air Horn and Divine Hammer were fine. We did not test out their adeptness at standards like Daiquiris, Mai Tais, Zombies, etc, but I assume they'd be solid. *Fino Countdown was accepted as pretty good but overly rounded and lacking something. I flat out would not recommend the N/A Toddy, which has numerous sour and bitter elements (accentuated by the heat) but zero sweet ones--not even a little honey--so it's just a hot, unpleasant experience through and through. I think whoever is in charge of the cocktail program here should take a fresh look at that one; it's a huge faux pas imo, and DD's especially deserve better. Overall these folks have a strong cocktail program they should be proud of (reminded me a little of Zombie Village in SF), but an even stronger rum program that they appear to be ashamed of. I've been to several bars with larger rum selections, but the rum flights here are the best I've seen anywhere--taking into account not only the rums they chose but the categories they created for them. I'd recommend any of them! (Bonus points for recognizing Plantation/Plateray as a French producer.) But I saw no mention of this on the website, and you have to ask for the rum list, just by assuming they have one. The prices are generally pretty reasonable, and I LOVE that they offer all pours in 1 and 2 oz sizes (like Pagan Idol), further democratizing the wild and wonderful world of rum. I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars; it would be a pretty easy 5 (for me) if not for the Toddy (others in my party seemed to give off more 3/4 vibes). I'll leave it as 5 for now because I'd like to go back and try something else (another original, a standard, a rum or two...); we'll see how that goes if I do :) read more

We have gone to this place for three years in a row for New Year's. Generally the food is great, even though the menu is very small. This year, however, the best item on the menu (Fried Rice) was missing. We ordered at least one of every item, and the only really notable item this year was the Shrimp Toast. Definitely try that. The Lamb Sliders were also good. The skewers were bland, but cooked well, the pole was really boring and needed more sauce or furikake, and the tostada things were boring. Had a fabulous date night here last night with my hubby. Vibe was romantic and fun. We were happy they were requiring proof of vaccination. Staff was attentive, friendly and efficient, even though it was a really busy Saturday night. Menu selections were varied and the specials were enticing. For drinks I started with the daily Punch special which was yummy and my hubby had the Electric Mayhem which was super delicious. Hubby's second drink was the Fino Countdown which he enjoyed and said was very "airomatic." For food we had the Deviled Eggs and the perfectly cooked Chicken Empanadas.
