Do yourself a favor and have dinner at Runner and Stone. You will keep coming back. My husband and I go as often as possible as it has become our go-to restaurant. Every time we eat here we are so supremely happy--the atmosphere is casual, friendly and lovely; the staff is so competent and attentive; and the food is wonderful. As others have mentioned, the breads are truly outstanding but that's only the beginning. The pastas, the main entrees, the desserts...all top notch with great attention to detail. We usually have a cocktail or a bottle of wine to complement whatever we eat and are always very pleased with the choices. I cannot recommend Runner and Stone highly enough. read more

Was happy to see a new lunch place near work. But the first time I ordered the duck confit salad to go, I was shocked to see a minuscule serving in the box. It is not even the equivalent of a side salad on an entree plate... It wasn't cheap and the size of the portion for what they charge is blatant rip off. My friend's soup to go also was only a ladle worth in a half filled standard soup cup. What the heck?! Will not recommend for lunch take out. Not sure if its any better eating in. read more

Made it out to Runner & Stone last week-- dinner for 4. The food was very good and the service was excellent. The atmosphere was lively but not too loud. I'll go back here again at some point because they have an interesting menu with several dishes that I think I'd like. The bartender measures out shots when pouring drinks, which I don't like, but what can you do. read more

Stumbled upon this place recently when we were in Gowanus for a gallery hop. The place is absolutely lovely. The service is IMPECCABLE, you can clearly see the influence of Per Se (the head baker's alma mater) on the staff. Came here for brunch, ordered a French toast with caramelized bananas. The bananas did not seem appetizing. It looked like mash baby food. I was assuming it would look either cut up into cubes or sliced. Oh wells. Even though esthetically it wasn't appealing it was good. The portions r pretty small which is a disappointment. I also got a side of baguette, I was very happy and regret I didn't buy an extra one to go. Next time!! Service was great! Staff is very friendly and on top of their game. Another fabulous meal! First...the food: always the amazing bread arrives. I always turn down bread, but not here! Next, wonderful salads, one with squash (my fave) and one with beets. Both so fresh with strong flavors but not over-dressed. And the main courses: gnocchi and Cornish hen. Both perfect! In general the food is creative but not weird--you want everything on the menu. And it's very well prepared. Next...the service: it's the hospitality of a neighborhood restaurant but with way better food. The owner greets you, recognizes you from the last time and has real insight to share about the menu. The food comes out at the perfect time. Not to quick and not to slow. Well done Runner and Stone. A very well executed, low-key bakery restaurant on 3rd Ave. The menu is simple but affordable, and the food is made with knowledge and care. They clearly know good ingredients - everything feels fresh, the liquors are premium, the breads and pastries are baked daily. The decor is beautiful - lots of dark concrete, walls of glass, heavy-duty tables and chairs. The coffee machine is a high-end Italian number, which makes an excellent brew. My only gripe would be that the day we went there was only one front-of-house person working, and she had to take all orders, mix drinks, do transactions, answer the phone, which meant there was a bit of a line even though they weren't too busy. Maybe hire an extra person? Definitely worth as visit. read more

If you love bread then run to this place now! Really amazing breads, pastries and croissants. I would say it was the best I've had in NYC. The coffee was rather average but then again, they are not a coffee shop so it's forgivable. The only disappointment was the attitude of our server. It was a snowy morning and there weren't many customers, no one behind us, but she behaved as though it was Friday night rush hour. She seemed very impatient, barely cracked a smile, and acted like we were really in her way. Aside from that, I will definitely come back again! read more

First - I'm just going to say right off that the only reason this is 4-star review is because I have yet to try out the pastry... I'm sure once I do, I'll be able to upgrade to 5-star! I heard about this new spot from a friend of mine and had to check it out. I made an online reservation (super easy) and was set for a dinner for 2 at 7:00. Upon entering, the atmosphere was welcoming and warm. Lots of smiles - as one might expect with the opening of a new restaurant, but the atmosphere didn't lend itself to being new, but rather it seemed like it had always been there. My friend and I were seated in a cozy downstairs area of the restaurant... and set our sights on some evening drinks. The drink list offered a great selection of red, white and sparkling wines, along with cocktails and beers. If you're looking for draft, you'll have to look elsewhere... bottles only (for now anyway). I started off with a nice prosecco and then selected the grappa-cured striped bass appetizer. It was served like a carpaccio, but a little thicker - and delicious. I'm not a fan of fennel, but it paired well the bass. My friend tried out the apple panzanella, and while I didn't try it, she certainly enjoyed it, as she cleaned the plate! She had one of the cocktails, but I can't recall which one... very delicious! For my main course, I had the hanger steak with pototoes and mixed vegetables paired with a glass of red wine. Everything was cooked to perfection. My friend enjoyed the pancetta wrapped fish of the day (today's fish was hake) served over a cauliflower risotto. Like me... she ate everything on her plate! We were too full to order dessert, but I'm sure it would've been amazing. I could smell the aromatic coffee and I now regret not getting a cup while I had the chance. Next time! I really enjoyed dining here, and look forward to returning. The food, the setting, the service, the price... just a really pleasant way to spend an evening. Eh. Coffee is ok. Pastries / breads are good. But atmosphere and layout are a little generic. Also, they don't offer wifi, which is very unusual for a coffee shop in Brooklyn -- especially a "neighborhood" coffee shop like this one. To me it comes actress as unwelcoming. They can learn form other coffee shop-bars that end their Wifi each day when the place turns from café to bar. read more

I was at union square green market and I passed by this bakery with a line..... I saw an almond croissant and decided to try it. I've had so many almond croissants but this is by far the best I've ever had in NYC! The middle was runny and not super sweet and the pastry was flaky! I'm so impressed that I went back to get a loaf of cranberry pecan bread and it was absolutely delicious. It was so soft inside and had such amazing texture. You will not be disappointed. The odd name aside (there's some sort of deep meaning to it which I don't recall), this place is just about as good as it gets. The atmosphere is comfortable, that of a neighborhood favorite where (potentially) everyone could get to know your name. Chef Chris Pasculetti is a true culinary artists who conjures up the most creative and subtle food adjacencies. Original without trying too hard. Who would have thought of a Marsala Pot de Creme? And the lemon ricotta tomato salad? To die for. Where does he find produce this good? All of that without a fancy culinary school background or chi-chi sous-chef stints at Le Cirque or whatever the latest "It" restaurant may be--just raw local talent and imagination. Yum. What heavenly, scrumptious, thoughtful, generous food. We buy their fresh pastas from the Food Coop but had never been to the restaurant. This is a place where you take even the leftover ketchup, butter, and baguette slices to go. It is all so homemade and so beautifully prepared. As I told our server, it felt like someone who loves us had cooked us dinner. My 6-year old ate up her ravioli -- it has these fun twists like candy wrappers. And the grownups savored every bite of swordfish, fried chicken, nutty salad, spicy hummus, and summer veg. soup. Everything is very hearty and satisfying. All the breads and pastas have such remarkable texture and chew -- it is really an experience. And a great wine list to boot. Thank you, Runner & Stone! Brooklyners: keep this place in business. Do not walk by this beautifully chic restaurant! The salads are super fresh and interesting. The sandwiches truly superior. And the bread. The BREAD! It is clear that the baking team is on their game. Croissants with flavor! Zucchini bread good enough to eat a loaf at a time! Dark rye so dense and sour, yet moist and finishing sweet. I have heard so much hype about Runner & Stone- and so I stopped in today to get some lunch. I ordered the tuna salad and it was so surprisingly small. It tasted fine, but it was the smallest portion of a salad I have ever seen, and for $13. I was surprised it did not some with a roll or anything else. When I walked in, I was super excited about our dinner. The interior and music were very nice. But I was sadly disappointed with the food, considering the prices you pay. The pasta was bland and underwhelming, as was the $35 steak. Although the highlight was the duck pastrami appetizer. In the end, I had the feeling of being ripped off. On paper, the menu looks delicious, but the execution of the food was just simply not done well (either bland or way too salty). The waiters were nice and helpful, but for the prices, you will get a much more satisfying meal across the street at The Pines, or go a little further to Dover for a really fantastic meal for the same price or even lower. read more

My husband and I just got back from the islands (early Christmas present to ourselves). Runner & Stone is the absolute first thing we wanted after our vacation. Another tasty restaurant to round out the Littleneck and Pines trifecta on Third Avenue. The pasta here is a little less tasty than The Pines's, but all of Runner & Stone's pastries are out of this world. Come during the day and get yourself a tiny financier--it tastes like the best pistachio olive oil cake you'll ever have. Come at night and get the complimentary 16-layer phyllo dough square. Order the chicken--I don't say that often--which comes with satisfyingly dense buckwheat dumplings that have been marinating in a savory, mushroom-y broth. Even the free bread basket was delicious, and I was very pleased to see the butter pre-softened (my gauge of a good restaurant). My only regret is that even with a meager two entrees and appetizer split between two people, the deceptively filling dishes left me with no room to order what was sure to be a phenomenal dessert. I'll probably be back, because I want to reward any new restaurant in Brooklyn that cares about people enough to accept reservations. read more

I had an amazing time at this restaurant. The bread and appetizers are incredible, the Hummus is to die for! I had the roasted chicken with buckwheat dumplings that was absolutely delicious. My wife had a lamb dish that she Loved! The duck pastrami app was very creative. And leave room for the deserts. They make a cheesecake so smooth it tastes like cheesecake flavored whipped-cream. The best part is that the prices for these 'culinary works of art' are very low! I was pleasantly surprised when I saw my bill. Can't wait to go back to this restaurant again....and again. read more
