Hair cut and blow out straight
    Gianna A.

These ladies were AMAZING This was my first time here. I had Yukari working on my hair and she KILLED IT. She did an amazing job and was very good with hearing what I wanted and suggesting the best solution. I would DEFINITELY recommend this studio for not only the amazing service but the price was amazing too.

I never write bad reviews, but after what happened to me at Rush Hair studio I sadly feel it's my duty to write about my experience there and the horrible botched hair job which resulted in me not only having 4-5 different hair colors but having to CUT OFF about 4 inches of my hair. I have many details but cannot list it all because there is a set word count. My regular stylist was busy but because of the holidays, I decided to give Rush Hair Studio a try in which I found on Yelp. They have many positive reviews and were closer to me than my regular place. A yelper mentioned that she believes their positive reviews ones are fake and now, I am inclined to believe this to be true. I called on 12/18 and appt at 10am the next morning with Boyana was made. I was fine with that as I had read positive reviews about Boyona. I arrived the next morning and was greeted by Irene. I was confused as I had an appointment with Boyona, but now Irene was going to do my hair. That struck me as odd, and I had an uncomfortable feeling in my gut. She told me she was the one I talked to on the phone and the one that made the appointment and she would be doing my hair. But why tell me it was with Boyona then? I should've left then, but I was too nice. Being too nice during my time there will be things I regret as it all came back to bite me. Ladies and gentlemen when it comes to your hair, please don't be too nice. She also told me later she is ususally the only one who usually works on Thursday by herself. So why did she say I had an appointment with Boyona then? I realized now it was a bait and switch. Since it was just sprung on me she would be the one doing my hair, I asked her was she comfortable (my way of asking her politely if she was experienced enough to do my hair) and she told me yes, I have done blonde many times, I have been doing this for many years. I asked her but can you do my platinum blonde? And she said yes, but as long as you know the longer roots will not be as light as your roots. Again, I aksed it will be platinum? And she said yes, because when it's on the roots your hair will turn more light that's why we advised people to come in every 6-8 weeks, but the rest of your hair *might be just a little darker.* I understand this and was expecting it. I have let my plantium roots grow out for months on many, many occasions. Hair that is closer to the roots will turn lighter and quicker because of the heat generated from your head, and the rest of your hair may be slightly darker/different than the hair closest to your scalp, but to the untrained eye it is not noticeable unless you're looking for it. Irene confirm we were on the same page. I also stressed to her I didn't want my hair to be silver or grey in any way as it was unflattering on me. Irene was nice enough, but looking back there was so many wrong doings I should've not just walked out of there, but ran. I dont know if it is a lack of knowledge, technique, or just not willing to put in the time to do things correctly because if I'm going to blunt, plain laziness, but my hair suffered for it. 1. She rushed through my hair. I have never had someone take each end of my hair and place it on top my hair, in which my now already blonde processed hair is touching more bleach which will result in breakage (and why I had to cut off so many inches of my hair after). Usually the stylist uses foil to separate the hair so it doesn't touch the bleach and break, but here she is laying the bottom of my hair on top of the bleach. I remember thinking what is she doing and was trying to be nice and trusting the process as she knew what she was doing as she claimed to have done platinum hair so many times before. *if you look at my picture closely, this is just bleach on my hair and my hair being let down, this is actually the bottom of my hair laying on top of my head.* 2. She did not have any timer set at any time. She was just casually looking at my hair while doing someone else's hair. You should never eyeballing bleach on someone's hair as this can result in breakage! 3. I do not recall her shampooing my hair after the toner was washed out. My hair was orange (and not in a good way), various shades of blonde, and ... you guessed it - GREY! Her response to that was it would wash out later. My hair colors were all scattered and uneven and I did not see it until later, but I have big rings of orange in the back of my hair. I immediately contacted the owner and when we spoke the next day she was pretty blaze about it, which to me is so irresponsible as a biz owner. At least a refund was given. We had Irene on speaker in which she lied and twisted the truth saying she told me it would look like this. I was infuriated. Not only did she ruin my hair, but she lied and blamed me! I told the owner to review the video recordings of that day and she will see the truth. Be wary, this place lacks technique to do your hair and if they ruin it, they will even blame you!

Just got an incredible refresh with Boyana. Captured exactly what I was going for-icy highlights without any damage. Very cute salon, great conversation, and really happy with the results. Can't wait to come back-thank you again!!

Curls before my cut (just a week or so)
    Irina D.

Booked an appointment for a cut / trim. Explained I have curly hair and inquired if any of the stylists are at least somewhat knowledgeable about curly hair and cuts. I was told that all the stylists at the salon have curly hair (bit of a stretch?) and they are knowledgeable. I thought to myself, okay great, and booked an appointment. Ended up with Deanna, who I have to say, was very sweet and kind and friendly. We talked extensively about my hair, my struggles with it (dry, frizzy, loose curl pattern / definition), I mean--you name it, I struggle with it, unfortunately. I ended up just getting a cut and the Olapex treatment, which I guess I was expecting a lot more than what I got from it. It honestly did pretty much nothing to my hair. Now, I totally get that I cannot be unrealistic and completely delusional to expect to walk out of the salon with perfectly defined, frizzless curls; I know and fully understand that it's a work in progress to undue YEARS of damage, products used, techniques and research on what works best for my hair. Is the Olapex treatment worth the money by itself? Maybe / probably. But for me, personally, no. Unfortunately, I feel Deanna just gave me a very unflattering, bad haircut. It just did NOT work well for me. I didn't have a problem with the fact she cut a lot (it had been 4.5 months since my last cut / short trim) and while I would have wanted to keep my length, I knew that I needed a good chop and that was FINE. But she gave me a Triangle Shape type of cut, with zero layers throughout / tapered / V-cut with very short and awkward bangs? / short layers only in the front. So short I am barely able to curl them in any way. I was hoping my curls would bounce up with the fresh cut, but they didn't even do that very much. Again, I felt she was knowledgeable and very nice, but just not skilled at a curly cut (or at least a more layered cut) to be more flattering. Here is a before and after. Shame. I would have wanted to REALLY be happy with this service, but at this point, I'm unsure if I will be back. They seem to be great for other cuts, color and other other types of services, but if you're on (what feels like an endless) bonafide curly hairy journey, probably not the best option, IMHO.

Got haircut - layers (not hair color). Dominique cut my hair and is pretty good I thought. This is my second time going cause the first time She took her time and Was patient. Did good job back then. Like you can see in the first pic, There was a lot of sharppp angular chop off!! A good chunk of my front hair is very short compared to the ones in the back. She was nice and took time. But I wanted only the front first few to be shorter. Not this: an imbalanced front good chunk of hair being very short and back pretty long. Now it's going to take forever to let it grow. I was planning to color my hair. But I do I even spend $200-300 on a hair that I don't even like :( Don't get me wrong. As you can see in the photo, still like how my hair looks compared to before I guess. Layers on Straight hair sometimes can be tricky because even small mistakes you can see the mistakes really quick. N that was my hair. As a person, Dominique is very sweet and genuine. Loved chatting with her. That's why giving 3 star. But now all I see if that good chunk of my hair in the front missing. I guess you get what you pay for. I've definitely paid more in other places, and have had slightly better hair cut, where my hair felt flawless no matter which side I flipped my hair. Didn't feel like paying an arm and a leg for a simple hair cut any more. But I guess this is what happens.

Roots (over 2inch grow out), toner, color correction... literally the works! (By Nina)
    Sarah K.

I found this salon through Yelp, doing some real research for a good, and hopefully affordable place that specializes in color. I definitely went through a lot of places in the area (as I knew this would be a lengthy process and preferred to be close to home once I was done). My first interaction was through Yelp, as there was an option to contact and request a quote. The response time was amazing, almost immediate. I explained what I was looking for. Of course, this was bound to be quite the undertaking, and I knew that because there was so much dark growth. The person who communicated with me via chat on Yelp was very attentive. She was very honest and managed expectations, since it would be difficult to blend the new blonde with what I already had. I appreciated that very much and just from that chat and the reviews (and trust me, I start with the negative reviews of places first) I was ready to give them a shot. The minute I walked in for my 10am appointment, I felt like I was in the right place. Everyone looked busy and happy and the place itself - amazing decor and overall clean vibe. I met my stylist Nina and I loved her bubbly personality. We'd spoken on the phone when she called to discuss my appointment and was so friendly, walking me through what she was thinking of doing. She mostly stuck to that plan that she originally spoke of over the phone, with a few tweaks which she did talk to me about when I arrived. She decided to do thin foils, which is super tedious work - but that alone really made me feel comfortable. She was willing to put in that extra elbow grease and take her time to deliver the final end product that I was hoping to achieve. She let me know from the jump that it may not be perfect on the first visit because she didn't know how my hair would lift, but also said she would do her best to get me out with one visit and as close to what I wanted as possible or even completely there if all went well. I expected it to be a process. I thought it would be a ton of boring hours waiting for color to lift. Nope! Nina works like a ninja - so fast you don't even see or feel anything. It felt like barely any time had passed - she'd just finished foiling the whole head, and was already unwrapping one of the older sections. Everything worked just that smoothly. Everyone there worked like such a well oiled machine, everyone helping everyone, an assembly line turning people out asap. And trust me - it was BUSY. I'm not going to lie, there was a point in the process where I was a little frightened because of the blue tones in my hair after her first toner application and my super white ends, but Nina kept such a cool head and was like "I got this. Don't worry." I was really afraid for the end result when I saw snowy white ends, and definitely had a freak out moment where I was like omg, my hair is going to be different shades all over ... but after Nina explained how she'd tone and try to warm it up, I once again, resolved to trust the process. A few toners later and my hair ended up being everything I wanted and then some. I really hadn't even expected to come out this light in one process and then also be so ready to go. Nina made sure to help me with care tips for upkeep and she was super helpful overall with just little things here and there that would help maintenance. The entire experience was a blast - and it was a five hour long day with her. Everyone was so chill and everyone was so friendly. Great conversation, knowledgeable stylists. Even when things seemed to be going off the rails, everything totally came together. I was really happy that I ended up choosing this salon and that Nina was chosen for me. My husband, who was there towards the beginning and saw the foils being put in, then again for a few minutes after the toner application but still wet, and then finally picking me up and seeing the end result was SOOOO thrilled. He loved it and I think after such a long time growing my hair out, he'd even forgotten what I looked like this type of blonde. Highly recommend. Price wise, I did end up paying a bit more than I had wanted to, but I completely understand why. It was a lot of work and it was tedious work and honestly, you do get what you pay for. I know $420 may seem like a lot, but with how much there was to do, I get it. I know doing regular root touch ups would be way more reasonable, so don't let that number scare you. Everything I had done would have been way more expensive in the city and honestly, who knows if you even would have had this type of experience or these really knowledgeable stylists. One other thing - I noticed they all treated the revolving door of clients coming in and out like family. They seemed to know almost everyone and that says something. These women keep coming back enough to build a relationship. That alone shows you that they must know what they're doing.

Irena SAVED my hair. I made a color correction appointment with rush after having a horrible experience at another Astoria salon. I wanted my brown hair to be brought to a copper red. The first salon basically dyed my hair dark red, so dark it looked black. I hated it so much. I learned my lesson and did my research this time and came across Rush. Irena was patient and listened to what I wanted and explained what she needed to do to get me there. She's a an angel. She not only did an amazing job lifting my horrible dye job, but she have me the most beautiful and fun red. At the end of my time they're Gabby have me the most AMAZING blow out. I think I found my go to salon now. I have 3b curly hair and Gabby slayed these edges. Honestly, best blow out I've ever gotten in Astoria. Seriously, best salon in Astoria. Period.

Yukari did a beautiful job listening to what I wanted and also making some great suggestions and I've never been so happy to cut off 8 inches of hair!

Jenny did a great job with my hair for my friend's wedding! She's very skilled and nice. Will come back again 100%

The guy who cut my hair was super aggressive combing when it was wet (no sort of detangler or leave in was used) and it hurt my scalp, I knew he could see the CHUNKS of strands being pulled out of my scalp. It hurt so badly, I even said ouch. I asked for a trim with very very light layers. He cut at least two inches more than I asked. He went in thinning out my already thin fine hair. He then blow dried my hair with no product, and again my hair tangled, got pulled and even stuck in the hair brush. I am already on Amazon buying any product that will help my hair grow. I can't speak to their job coloring, or what it would be like for just a blow dry. Because of that, I returned for what was supposed to be a simple root touch-up. Before starting the second appointment, I've received compliments from other hair stylists on how healthy my hair was. I've consistently been told my hair is thin but healthy, and I've worked very hard to maintain it. Unfortunately, this visit was the complete opposite experience. I was at the salon for over six hours, significantly longer than my first visit. Multiple stylists were working on and checking my hair throughout the process, and I trusted that everything was going smoothly. No one checked in with me to approve the color before beginning to blow dry. When I finally saw the result, it was far from the platinum blonde I requested. Instead, my hair was left an orange-toned blonde. I had gone in for a root retouch, but they dyed my entire head without discussing that with me first. After I expressed concern about the color, I was suddenly told my hair was "very damaged" and breaking easily -- despite having complimented its health before starting. I was then told I needed a keratin treatment in order to proceed. This was not something I requested or agreed to; I was told it was necessary after the damage had already been done. During the wash, I could physically feel excessive pulling, and when I stood up, I saw a significant amount of my hair had fallen out. It was heartbreaking, especially after taking so much care of my hair. They attempted to adjust the tone, and while it became somewhat more acceptable, I ultimately left just blonde -- not the platinum blonde I originally had and specifically asked for. There was no apology, no acknowledgment of the distress caused, and no adjustment to the bill. I paid full price for a service I was deeply unhappy with. To make matters worse, I later received a voicemail asking me to return and pay for the keratin treatment -- something I never wanted and was told I "needed" after their mistake. Even in that message, there was no apology. My first experience was wonderful, which makes this even more disappointing. Unfortunately, after this visit, I will not be returning
