He's very honest, with clear explanations of the treatment he prescribes. He explained everything to my Mom, made sure she was comfortable and clear on her treatment. Answered all questions, and is just a great, friendly, awesome, upbeat person. Everyone in the office is fantastic. The facility is clean, and masks are worn. Day of her treatment, he was efficient, and the procedure was done in a short amount of time. Again, clear instructions about home care, and healing time. His solution worked great. She has another back issue now, but not as severe. Did not take any convincing to get her to come back here to have that solved. Don't endure back/spine pain, come here!!!

First of all the surgery center reminds me of an illegal abortion clinic in the Philippines, very scary place. Secondly my attempts to get copies of my medical records have been unsuccessful. I have been trying to get copies of them so that I can go to the RUSH Pain Center which was recommended to me as IPM is a literal nightmare. I have never experienced such a disorganized doctors office with no returned phones calls, no follow up on requests for refills etc etc. I went through a terrible withdrawal from going cold turkey on my meds TWICE due to the fact that no one responds to any phone calls. The pharmacy is In California and is mailed to you so the it takes weeks to get the medication. This year I bit the bullet and bought a much more expensive medical insurance plan so that I could go to a legitimate professional pain center such as at RUSH University. I weaned myself off of the medication I was on so as not to experience the horrible horrible withdrawal symptoms I experienced twice while going to IPM. Now I am living in pain each day at a time waiting for them to give my copies of my medical records so that I can go to another doctor. My next steps will be legal action if I do not receive the medical records by the end of this week. Stay away!

My pain was so bad I finally called my insurance company (Cigna) and asked for in network providers in my area. That's how I found Dr. McGowan. Now I would like to note that I NEVER visit a physician, restaurant, or any business other than what's normal for day to day activity (CVS or Target) without checking their Yelp reviews. My insurance gave me 3 providers, none of which had great reviews *rolls eyes at insurance company* I ended up giving this office a shot because they only had 7 reviews. I feel like less than 10 isn't an accurate assessment (good or bad). The other providers I was given had more bad reviews which tells me that that is the culture within their organizations. The reviews from here weren't coming from fellow Yelp Elite. If I see that someone setup a Yelp account just to write 1 good or bad review I pretty much ignore it. Glad I went with my gut. My appointments went great! I made my initial appointment over the phone. When I came in for both my consultation and follow up visit, I was greeted right away. I think the front desk receptionist's name is Veronica. She was nice. I didn't have to wait long at all to see Dr.McGowan so that is a major plus. She was friendly and very knowledgeable. I first visited the office in mid September. Dr. McGowan sent me to get an epidural at the surgical center on Fullerton 2 weeks after my consultation. Then I waited another 2 weeks for my follow up, which was today. I would definitely recommend Dr. McGowan. I would have thought a simple visual assessment at the time of my visit would have been sufficient. Instead, I was delayed and strung along for two more visits. He didn't submit the correct paperwork for the MRI so it was denied by the insurance. Finally, after two more visits, going for the MRI was unsuccessful so he wrote a prescription for an "Open MRI" at a facility 17 miles away from my home in the far Western suburbs. He prescribed me with Lidocaine patches yet he refused to proovide the insurance the necessary documentation for the patches and it was denied. Even after I asked his staff and the hospital administrator to ask him to send the documentation to BCBS, he never did it. Eventually, I transferred to Dr. Shah who scheduled me for treatment the same day, prrovided all the necessary insurance paperwork immediately and I finally got treatment from dr. Shaha after months of Candido stalling and denying me treatment. Dr. Candido is a "Yes" man to the insurance company and a "No" man to helping patients. Also, I told him that MEloxicam didn't help. I told him it was causing me to fall asleep constantly. Instead of prescribing a different muscle relaxant (As Dr. Shah did on the first visit), Dr. Candido wrote a refill for Meloxicam and I never filled it. I continued to be in excruciating pain because Candido couldn't be bothered to listen to the needs of a patient and write a proper, useful prescription.

Whenever I come across an article or a statistic about how women aren't taken seriously by doctors…read more(a phenomenon known as "the pain gap") I am immediately reminded of my experience with Dr. Jonathan Vogel a number of years ago. I was referred to him regarding a trio of symptoms: 1. Flashes in my vision and vision doubling - which Dr. Vogel suggested was merely psychological and that I should see a psychiatrist. Thankfully I found a more skilled doctor who diagnosed me with aura migraines and double vision caused by early onset cataracts. I later had cataract surgery which cured me of that. 2. Nerve pain in my legs and tailbone - He sent me for nerve testing, which showed that I had nerve slowing, which he said "could eventually lead to drop foot." When I expressed confusion and worry over that possibility he told me in a very condescending annoyed tone, "Maybe you should go outside or read a book." Thankfully I found a more skilled doctor later on. The nerve pain turned out to be due to a large uterine tumor that required major surgery to remove. Following surgery that symptom was alleviated. 3. Extreme fatigue. The fatigue was due to the exceedingly heavy menstrual bleeding that the uterine tumor was causing, which had made me anemic. Dr. Vogel had suggested my fatigue was also psychological. Lol. Seems like his favorite go-to when he can't come up with a proper diagnosis. So yeah I don't know, maybe Dr. Vogel should...go outside or read a book--or many books--on healthcare, especially as it pertains to women, on critical thinking, and on how to be a more compassionate doctor. When I called Rush on a Tuesday, they had an appointment for me on Friday. I thought this was great, however, they were able to get me in for my evaluation and then told me it would be 6 weeks before they would be able to give me my injection. They were able to get me in one day sooner than Northwestern. I filed a complaint and the manager called me back and asked if anyone at the front desk offered me a sooner appointment by seeing a different anesthesiologist. I told her no and she said that's not how we do things here. If the patient is in pain, we will offer them a sooner appointment but it will be with a different doctor. I accepted that offer and it still took an additional 3 weeks to get me in. You are not seen by an actual doctor or anesthesiologist here, you will be seen by a fellow. I had a total of four appointments and each one of them was done by a fellow and the doctor followed up for maybe 3 minutes at the end of my appointment. Some of the fellows are good but one of them left me speechless. She came into the room and asked me if I decided if I was going to get the injection for my pain and I was speechless because I was there for a follow-up after my second injection. They left me sitting there for 43 minutes and couldn't even review my chart before coming into see me? This is when I know it was the end for me with them. I was scheduled for an epidural injection and was told that the procedure takes 20 minutes. I had to be there 1 hour before my time of 9:00 a.m. and I walked out of there at 1:45 p.m. for a 20-minute procedure! They put you under for these procedures and I assumed that was necessary. They left me crying in pain on the gurney from sitting on my tailbone for 2 hours and 45 minutes. I was in such much pain and crying that they did not wait to get me to the procedure room before knocking me out. They have no concern for how long you wait. I then needed a second injection so I made an earlier appointment hoping to be out of there sooner and that is not the case. I had an 8:00 a.m. time and I walked out of there at 1:00 p.m. for a 20-minute procedure! On my second procedure they again left me sitting there on my tailbone on that gurney and I was crying in pain hanging off the side of the gurney and the nurse came in and apologized and said that they take the more severe patients First. Why are you scheduling me for 9:00 a.m. if you have more severe patients? How severe are they that they walked in there just like I did? They will put you under for each procedure. I went to Northwestern after having enough nonsense from Rush that's how I found out that you do not have to be put under for these procedures. I've done three injections at Northwestern and not once have they put me under. I also went to Rush pain clinic for an issue with my hands. I made the mistake of leaving Northwestern's notes inside my envelope that contained the CDs with my images for my wrists. The fellow came in after 3 minutes and told me what they thought was wrong with my hands and it turns out they didn't evaluate my images, they were reading everything to me that was already in the notes from Northwestern so after leaving me waiting 40 minutes , they did not bother to look at the images I brought with they just reviewed the notes that Northwestern had already put with my images . Every follow up that I've had after my injections I have waited no less than 40 minutes for a fellow to come in. I have been late for work every appointment that I've had with Rush because they don't care how long they leave you waiting. The schedulers at the desk have no concern for getting you out of there. I made several attempts to contact the pain clinic and they NEVER picked up the phone and never returned my calls. I would call in the automated system would put me on hold for 20 minutes to an hour. I filed another complaint and sent them my call log to show them how long I see it on the phone waiting for someone to pick up. I had to file a complaint with patient relations there that prompted the manager from the pain clinic to call me and that was the only way for me to schedule an appointment. Do not go here. Please, go to a place that cares. Northwestern has been a lifesaver for me and they cannot be nicer. As I waited in the waiting area, I could swear I was sitting in a free clinic. It smelled terrible, the people waiting smell terrible, the rooms were dirty and the gurneys look like they were bought at a second hand store. I expect better from a hospital that charges that much to my insurance. After my second injection, they couldn't figure out why I'm still in pain so they wanted me to see a spine surgeon. I wouldn't see a surgeon there if my life depended on it! The pain clinic makes everyone in that hospital look bad.
