I went to Russ's last night to have my veterans a little meal and it turned out to be a hamburger cheeseburger with fries. The cheeseburger was appalling. It was about fun 16 thick slice of tomato iced onion very little little bit of ketchup and that was it how depressing that was how they served a veteran. read more

Family owned and operated since 1934, Russ' is a time capsule from not only before the Internet (to be sure) but before international travel and even television! Wrap your head around that while we reframe our breakfast visit. The signage is the first clue that we're no longer in the modern era; it's charming and optimistic. Their motto - "the home made goodness people" - and their logo - a blonde Dutch boy running past a windmill through tulips while carrying a burger - represents a world long past, similar to those heady videos of early astronauts on Coco Beach. The Saucijzenbrodje (literally "sausage roll") was my obvious first nibble. A Dutch pig-in-a-blanket hounds just right... and it was! The flakey pastry shell was both crispy, flakey, and oily in just the most satisfying way! The sausage has a great texture and flavor, so half got eaten bare. Served with ketchup, which was tasty too, I pined for the curry ketchup favored in Holland (and familiar to any who have feasted at an Amsterdam Automat). Russ' Original Breakfast Sandwich (fried egg, seared stack of hickory smoked slices ham, American cheese, on a toasted and buttered English muffin) is a sweeter, ham'ier forerunner of McDonald's Egg McMuffin (1975). Yum! Jackie, my server, was right on top of my coffee consumption, friendly, and attentive. Anyone whinging about the cook times - yes, few take a few minutes - should reflect on a time before just-in-time pre-prepared drive-thru foods were considered normal. Russ' filled up during my Saturday visit, from when I arrived at 0800 to when I left at 0930. (This reflects my morning wake up pace, serial rounds of exploring the menu, and reading my morning catch up stuff, and not on the normal time to get in and out). I've always loved Russ' but this year we have been disappointed. Ordered a chicken dinner -- dry, hard chicken. Always loved the onion rings, but the last several times they have been soggy and rubbery. Breakfast is always good. Is it the chef? Supplier? Please get back the good food! read more

Yesterday I ordered from Russ' Restaurant for the first time. We had Russ' 'Famous' Hand Battered Onion Rings, Double Cheeseburgers, and Carrot Cake. I'm always a bit leery when someone describes their product as famous but in this case I think it was justified; these were one of the two best orders of onion rings I've ever had in my life. Hand cut, crisp, and deliciously battered, I'm looking forward to having them again. Their carrot cake was incredible, moist, firm, well spiced with a tasty cream cheese icing. It was one of the best tasting pieces of carrot cake, other than homemade, that it's been my pleasure to devour. The burgers however were a totally different story. I had requested they not be overcooked and mentioned I like my Burgers pink inside. What I got was totally overdone burgers without a trace of pink or any juiciness. For this reason I have to give Russ' Restaurant three stars and instead of the five that the onion rings and carrot cake were leading up to. Future orders will have to have something else as the entree because the burgers were totally disappointing. read more

First time there. We went for lunch. My wife got an olive burger and asked for it to be cooked medium rare. I ordered the Big Dutchman burger, cooked medium. My wife said the olive burger was the BEST Olive burger that she's ever had. My Big Dutchman burger was fabulous too! Both burgers were cooked exactally as ordered. We had the most terrible experience ever today. First when we sat down the volume of dirty and left over food under our table was disgusting. Our waitress forgot our milk for tea and we had to ask 3 times until we got it. Next she just brought over our check without even asking if we wanted dessert, then when we said we did she acted shocked. She never removed any dirty dishes from the table until we asked which then was only partially cleared. Then lastly after we ordered dessert she said twice "we dont know if you can stay, we might have to kick you out." Such a terrible experience, will never be going back there again. read more

I usually enjoy Russ', but was really disappointed in the Potato Soup I ordered today. It was tasteless and the potatoes were not done. A few weeks ago I ordered Pea Soup and that, also, was not the usual great tasting soup Russ' is known for. Thankfully the service is still great! read more

I've always liked Russ' salads,,but today I ordered a JuliAnne salad, there was no ham, egg, just lettuce cheese and some very hard croutons, I also ordered a tuna salad which had a tiny bit of tuna, wilted lettuce and hard croutons. If you're from West Michigan and don't know Russ', you don't get out enough! Russ' isn't fine dining, but it doesn't bill itself as such, so you shouldn't be disappointed. To be honest, Russ' is fairly good family-style food for a low price in a casual, laid-back setting. It's not a fast-paced meal, and the wait staff you'll encounter here typically does not consist of the jaded 19-year-old. That really just adds to the pleasantness is the evening. Okay, so I wouldn't take my wife here for a date--but this is on the top half of the list for dinner out with the wife and kids when we don't feel like cooking at home or spending an arm and a leg to take the entire family out. So take the 4-star rating with this caveat: you have to go in to the experience with managed expectations. You get what you pay for, and at Russ', the value typically exceeds the price you pay. read more

Everyone at my table was pretty bummed out, also every single person I've subsequently told about the experience was also pretty bummed out. A lot if the older crowd tend to eat here because the food is cheap and the atmosphere is old school "Dutch" nice. A cheeseburger and fries is about $4. And it's made to order. My burger patty was cooked to perfection. Medium and very juicy and delicious. The bun was pretty good. But there was barley any mayo and olives on my Olive Burger. And it needed some tomato! 1 Bun Restaurant has the best Olive Burger in GR so far! read more

I ordered a large salad with extra tomato and cucumber from this place for lunch. It cost $5.50 and came with two cherry tomato and 2 slices of cucumber. After getting to work I couldn't believe what they gave me. Went back to complain and they said they did add extra tomato and cucumber. Was told each piece cost 50 cents extra. In the picture you will see on the left the salad I got from Russ minus the two cherry tomatoes and 2 slices of cucumber because I added them to my salad I ordered from Mr. burger next door. Can't say I like this place, it has mediocre food at best, that takes a hot minute to prepare. My brother got the Mac and cheese and didn't like it so I polished it off, it tasted like a penny. The food portions are off as well, I ate a whole burger and a side of fries and was still famished. Overall disappointed in the food quality and the time it took to prepare. The smell of death wafted through the air as all the other customers belonged in nursery homes. The waitresses were easily flustered and we just wanted to split the check, a little my expectations didn't come to reality and they were pretty low to begin with. read more

Don't go here. It's not anywhere as good as the other Russ's. I went there this evening, was seated, given a menu and water, then forgotten. After about 15 minutes I went up to the cashiers counter and asked for help. They said they would find my server right away. I waited another 10 minutes watching other people get waited on and finally collected my stuff, went to the cashiers counter and told them I was leaving. I used to go there a couple of times a week but I'm going to have to find another place. The food is ok when you can get a server, but waiting almost a half hour to order in a mostly empty restaurant is inexcusable. read more

I like this Russ' location because they offer an all you can eat Soup and Salad Bar with a Baked Potato. I admit the salad bar is just lettuce and the toppings for your salad, but they are always fresh. The housemade french dressing is simply the best I have ever had (you can also buy a bottle to take home). There are 4 selections of soup you can help yourself to or the waitress can get you what is kept in the kitchen (like chicken corn chowder, french onion, or chili). I also highly recommend the cream puffs with hot fudge...MMMMM! Service is always great! read more

I haven't been to this Russ' location before and knowing the food in Holland was impeccable, I decided to venture in with my friend and give it a try. The waiter was very attentive. I ordered a French Dip sandwich, while my friend ordered the classic fried chicken dinner. We both kind of laughed at the shriveled up pieces of chicken they brought out. It was a pathetic site to behold nonetheless. Three pieces of chicken equals one at KFC; plush they were bone dry. My sandwich was simply okay, until I bit into something a little solid. Looking at what it was, I found a piece of metal in my sandwich. I'm so glad I found this small piece of metal. The waiter simply asked if I wanted another sandwich. When I explained, I do not think I will partake on that one again, he said they would take the sandwich off the bill. HELLO.... The manager did not even come to the table to see if we were okay. No one seemed to care that there may have been a possibility that I swallowed some of those shards of metal. I really hope someone from the Health Department reads this review. Check your food VERY carefully. To add to it, my friend was sick that evening after eating the sick chicken. Thanks Russ' for a wonderful evening. read more

Food was great, service, well let's just say that Katrina needs a few more lessons in the area of waitress-ing. Only five of us, at her ONLY table. She asked each one of us, who's plate is this one. really? then she messed up the order , came out with extra fries and extra mashed potatoes . This place came highly recommended to me by my brother-in-law (Joe O.) and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was filled will plenty of smiles and the food was delicious. Most meals are reasonably priced and if you tip more than 10%, the waitstaff will love you. I would strongly consider dining here for Thanksgiving. read more

I've driven by Russ' thousands of times in my life growing up in Grand Rapids but I only stopped into this location on 28th street yesterday night for the first time. This location was built in 1970 and it looks like they have the same clientele today as they did back then. This restaurant just oozes West Michigan. Their logo is a Dutch boy and their staple dish is called the Dutchman Burger. You can probably find many Grand Rapids natives, attendees of the various CR churches and fans of Christian High School football here. I ordered the Western Burger, which was a delicious mountain of a sandwich including fried onions, some sort of BBQ type sauce, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. The fries are really quite mediocre. But the oreo shake. Oh, the oreo shake. It was to die for. I gobbled it up in no time. I'll definitely go back here if I want a taste of Grand Rapids' heritage and history. read more

My first and last time at a Russ'. Visiting the area and wanted somewhere for lunch we don't have at home. It was a cold day, so thought soup and 1/2 sandwich sounded fine, but wanted more than a cup of soup, so my friend and I shared a sandwich and each had a bowl of soup. The turkey Reuben we ordered had watery coleslaw which drained all over the bottom slice of bread making it soggy. The sandwich also had 2 pieces of turkey lunch meat and one slice of cheese. Not much of a "Reuben", which are usually piled high sandwiches, and not nearly worth the $8.00+ charge for the sandwich alone! No fries or not even a couple of chips came with it. We pointed out the soggy bread to the waitress, but although she said she would tell the kitchen, no replacement or credit or even apology was forthcoming. I've never been in a restaurant before where, when shown something like that, the waitress didn't reach over and take the food away and come back later with a replacement. My friend had chili which I guess was okay, but the white chicken chili I ordered was pink rather than white, overly thick, and had no spice. Fortunately there was pepper on the table to give it a little kick. I removed the bottom slice of bread and ate 2/3 of the bowl of soup. So for about $9.00 (because we split the cost of the sandwich) I had less than 1/2 a soggy sandwich and 2/3 a bowl of poorly made soup. Never going back. read more
