Yesterday I ordered from Russ' Restaurant for the first time. We had Russ' 'Famous' Hand Battered Onion Rings, Double Cheeseburgers, and Carrot Cake. I'm always a bit leery when someone describes their product as famous but in this case I think it was justified; these were one of the two best orders of onion rings I've ever had in my life. Hand cut, crisp, and deliciously battered, I'm looking forward to having them again. Their carrot cake was incredible, moist, firm, well spiced with a tasty cream cheese icing. It was one of the best tasting pieces of carrot cake, other than homemade, that it's been my pleasure to devour. The burgers however were a totally different story. I had requested they not be overcooked and mentioned I like my Burgers pink inside. What I got was totally overdone burgers without a trace of pink or any juiciness. For this reason I have to give Russ' Restaurant three stars and instead of the five that the onion rings and carrot cake were leading up to. Future orders will have to have something else as the entree because the burgers were totally disappointing.

Very basic overly salted diner menu. Service was really un-engaged and rushed us. You can do classic American diner fair authentic and well but not here.

The ceiling here is painted with a mural of blue skies.

Best onion rings ever. Small Dutch restaurant. Homey food like meatloaf, fried chicken, cinnamon rolls... Service is quick and great. A lot if the older crowd tend to eat here because the food is cheap and the atmosphere is old school "Dutch" nice. A cheeseburger and fries is about $4. And it's made to order. The desserts are also pretty good as well.

My burger patty was cooked to perfection. Medium and very juicy and delicious. The bun was pretty good. But there was barley any mayo and olives on my Olive Burger. And it needed some tomato! 1 Bun Restaurant has the best Olive Burger in GR so far!

I ordered a large salad with extra tomato and cucumber from this place for lunch. It cost $5.50 and came with two cherry tomato and 2 slices of cucumber. After getting to work I couldn't believe what they gave me. Went back to complain and they said they did add extra tomato and cucumber. Was told each piece cost 50 cents extra. In the picture you will see on the left the salad I got from Russ minus the two cherry tomatoes and 2 slices of cucumber because I added them to my salad I ordered from Mr. burger next door. On the right is what $5.25 will get you at Mr. Burger. I liked Russ food but after this salad even I will never go back.

    Hot turkey gravy tho tho

So, nobody ever ate at Russ' for the culinary experience, but a turkey melt and onion rings are to die for.

I had breakfast eggs, hashbrowns, and toast, and it was absolutely fantastic. The eggs were fluffy and plenty. The hashbrowns were fresh crispy, and vibrant, and the toast which was the sourdough was the heaviest sourdough. I think I've ever had with so much flavor!!! So to be that simple and to be that delicious is what we want. The pricing is outstanding and when I say outstanding absolutely fantastic. The staff and atmosphere are very homey and the food is always well priced and great portions. I tend to overorder whenever I come here but the leftovers still reheat nicely. I'm a big fan of getting the sweet pancakes or sweet griddle options with potatoes or breakfast meat. Everything comes out hot, fresh, and in good time. I think you can order pickup which is actually really cool and I may have to start doing before super long days at work. They have a parking lot right near the restaurant which is very convenient. Overall, I really love Shelley's and think it's a quintessential american diner experience.

We decided to share the fish and chips and meatloaf. I was pleasantly surprised at how good both were! The fish and chips were very light, didn't feel too heavy for the fried food and the amount was perfect. This is a nitpicky thing, but I would have rather had it on a plate than a bowl so the fish isn't sitting directly on the fries - even though I know that's the vibe. The meatloaf was also really good - I loved the crisp edges on the meatloaf as it gave it a lovely texture and the gravy flavor was amazing. We were both pleasantly surprised at how good the food was and will definitely be back! We did not have a reservation, and it does look like you can get one online, but we were seated promptly. The servers did look a little overwhelmed though, it seemed as though they were only 2 people covering the whole restaurant, including making the drinks! So patience is your friend - but honestly, they did a great job of keeping up and we weren't in much of a rush. They just looked a little frantic, which caused the vibe to be a little weird. However, for our date night, we weren't bothered and still enjoyed our meal! Parking around is street and metered, but hopefully you can find something as there are a few other restaurants and bars nearby. We didn't have any issues though, so I think it's just being patient and possibly walking a little bit. I will definitely be back, especially for dinner!

Reduced by a star because their take out containers really weren't ideal/good. We kept things upright but one of the items spilled out and onto another container and some of the sauces didn't have lids put on them (but some did), so they were dumped out on the bottom of the container. Regardless though, everything was very delicious. We really enjoyed everything and felt like there was a good variety of items. Despite having a bit of an initial mess to deal with, we still would order out again!

I adore crab so ordering that was a no brainer. Their coffee is strong. It took a ton of cream to change the color... though it was delicious with free refills for $5. The omelette was heaven. All the flavors melded well and I appreciated the crisp acidic salad to cut the richness of the omelette. My only critique is wishing the crab salad topping was a bit more decadent. For $21 I was hoping for big lumps of crab rather than cool shredded mayo based salad. All in all, I love this place, I love the concept. It was quite busy and was thankful to snag a seat at the bar.
