I don't know how old is place is or how long it has been in business ?? but this is theeeee hole in the wall as we like to say it!! convenient located in Grand Rapids in a small local neighborhood absolutely awesome fast service ,very attentive service ,waitresses were fun, shouting back-and-forth, shouting out orders talking to all of the patrons and customers.. very small inside and very clean !! but yes, very old!! a hole in the WalshIsh 5 star!! but the best part is hands-down, the food !!!!! my counterpart had a burger and said it was the best burger he's ever had. I had breakfast eggs, hashbrowns, and toast, and it was absolutely fantastic. The eggs were fluffy and plenty. The hashbrowns were fresh crispy, and vibrant, and the toast which was the sourdough was the heaviest sourdough. I think I've ever had with so much flavor!!! So to be that simple and to be that delicious is what we want. The pricing is outstanding and when I say outstanding absolutely fantastic. Every restaurant should take notice and you'll be having lines out the door like this place does!! I ordered my breakfast at 1 o'clock in the afternoon and it was spot on !! ...if you're looking for the great American breakfast/burger joint you need to check this place out Grand Rapids !!! if you don't know about this place ....wake up !!!! this is not a 4.5 star. Hole in the wall diner right down the road from my house. It's an incredibly quaint and cozy place that feels like a true neighborhood diner. The staff and atmosphere are very homey and the food is always well priced and great portions. I tend to overorder whenever I come here but the leftovers still reheat nicely. I'm a big fan of getting the sweet pancakes or sweet griddle options with potatoes or breakfast meat. Everything comes out hot, fresh, and in good time. I think you can order pickup which is actually really cool and I may have to start doing before super long days at work.They have a parking lot right near the restaurant which is very convenient. Overall, I really love Shelley's and think it's a quintessential american diner experience. read more

As far as retro-diners in the GRR area, this is THE PLACE to go! Everything is exactly as it should be: service, prices, cleanliness, decor, seating (including a counter) and of course the FOOD, which was spectacular. Most items are home made and are delicious. I stopped here at 12:30 for lunch and I was seated right away. My server came right over and gave me a menu and took my drink order. When she came back with my drink, I ordered the Hot Beef Sandwich along with mashed potatoes. After a short time, my meal was delivered, and it looked really good. There was a beef sandwich that was totally covered in rich beef gravy. In the center of the plate there was a big pile of mashed potatoes. The beef was extremely tender and flavorful. The beef gravy was creamy and rich, it covered very stiff mashed potatoes. They were cream and the gravy was perfect on top. The overall experience was very good. I felt I received more than my money's worth on the meal and the service was good as well. This is a nice little diner with a great vibe to it. I will be back. read more

I've been going to Shelley's for a couple of years now for breakfast. I've always enjoyed whatever I've ordered there . I typically order just standard breakfast fare. But what I've always liked about them is that although they have the same traditional foods that you might order at any greasy spoon, they are not greasy. It's nice to have eggs and hash browns that aren't swimming in fat. My wife ordered the bagel sandwich. And the bagel was delicious. It was very moist inside. Almost like a New York style boiled bagel. But we asked the waitress and she said they are just regular bagels. We forgot to ask the brand name. But I would like to know. Don't let the appearance of the outside keep you from coming to this little place. It's actually very nice and clean inside. The only reason I didn't give this place a five rating? Is because it is virtually inaccessible to handicapped people. If you are in a wheelchair or a walker, you'll have no problems getting up to the doorway. But the doorway is not very wide and not many wheelchairs would be able to get through it. And even if you could, the aileways are narrow and there would be no place to pull a wheelchair up to a table without blocking off the entire aisle. And it would be virtually impossible to get a wheelchair into there bathroom. Is there tables fixed against the wall right next to the doorway that you wouldn't be able to swing around to get in. Finally! We found our diner! We have been looking for a classic diner (non-chain) for some time. We used to frequent Tom's Diner in Buffalo, NY. Great food and staff there and we have been looking for another spot. Decided to come here based on the Yelp reviews. We were not misguided! Little, unassuming place with an eating bar at front and plenty of seating around the perimeter. Staff is busy and friendly. They've got ordering and serving down to a science. Our order took longer than we anticipated, but we were a bit impatient due to our hunger. Food did not disappoint, and the fresh hot coffee kept pouring--magical! Go here. Heard a lot of god things about Shelley's, so my wife and I tried it out this morning. It is hard to find and has a tight parking area, but we found a spot. We were told that we needed to sign up for a table, but we got one. I got the french toast and it was delicious. The syrup was cold, but still enjoyed it. My wife ordered oatmeal with frozen blueberries. She wanted the fruit cup, which is on the menu. On the positive side, we enjoyed our overall experience. The servers were active, clearing tables, dealing with new people, and serving the vibrant crowd. It has a nice Mexican twist, spicy, and a new favorite of ours for breakfast. The menu is huge, with variety and is much cheaper than most traditional breakfast places. read more

BEST OMELETTE I've ever had. My go to omelette place in Grand Rapids! I always get the Shelley's omelette, it has perfect ratio of avocado and cream cheese. Which I had never seen on an omelette before I stepped foot in here. Now I look for it anywhere else I go, I don't find it!! To be honest I've tried to recreate just the avocado and cream cheese ratio but it just cannot be done. You NEED the original to satisfy that craving. It's a small " mom and pop" diner, with excellent food. One of the owners was in the kitchen when we visited, and a daughter was helping in the front. Everything we had was excellent, well made and tasty. Prices were quite low for the amount of food. Only downside, the limited seating, largest table is 4, we had a group of 6 so we had to take 2 tables, but luckily there were 2 available across the aisle from each other. This is a great little "mom and pop" restaurant. The food was really good, service was friendly and the pricing is "just right". We showed up during a rush and the staff did a phenomenal job of getting us seated, taking our orders and bringing our food out. Shelley's Kitchen is the perfect place to stop in for breakfast before a busy day hitting up breweries in Grand Rapids Beer City. We came here for breakfast after our first night and it definitely reenergized us, fueled us for the day and hit the spot. It's definitely a hole in the wall, local dive diner with lots of charm, great food, and awesome friendly service. It's a small spot and we were lucky to grab a couple booths, as other patrons were leaving, for our large group of seven, on a busy bustling Saturday morning. The booths were pretty small and could have been more comfortable which was really my only complaint. The food was delicious and they gave huge portions. The menu was large with lots of options including egg, meat and potato combos, eggs Benedict, omelettes, pancakes, waffles, soups, salads and sandwiches. I chose the chocolate chip pancakes combo served with two strips of bacon and two eggs which I chose scrambled. The pancakes were HUGE! The size of my face! I probably would have just ordered the pancakes ala carte, had I known their size. I thought they were going to be more like silver dollar pancakes. After eating one, I was stuffed and surrendered defeat. The chocolate chip pancakes tasted homemade and were super fluffy and delicious! The eggs were also very tasty and the bacon was cooked perfectly crispy, just the way I like it. The coffee also tasted great. Another one of my friends ordered the tuna salad sandwich and a cup of soup and she also enjoyed it. Our server was friendly and attentive and our water glasses and coffee cups were always kept full and she checked on us frequently throughout our visit. She did clear our plates kind of hastily though and would have liked to have been offered a to-go box for my leftovers. Overall though, I had a great experience here. Let me start with the fact that I love old diners and hole-n-the-wall restaurants. I think they have a tendency for great food. I've now been here twice and my view of this place is Meh. The 1st time I ordered a chicken salad sandwich with fries. The chicken salad was a little odd. The base was ranch instead of mayo, a very average ranch. The sandwich was ok but a mayo base would have been better. The fries were very average. The 2nd time I had scrambled eggs, American fries, ham, and white toast. The portions were very good but the american fries were less than appetizing, the rest was very average. Almost all the food was not bad just very Meh! The service was grouchy the 1st time and cheerful the 2nd time. I know some people love this place, but I won't be back. read more

What can I say about this place that hasn't been said about classic American diner food? That it's sweet and simple and simply sweet. The staff are a bunch of good spirited people that can make up your day by making and serving delicious food. I highly recommend everything that's on this menu you will not regret spending your money here! My personal favorite breakfast is the country fried steak with eggs and hash browns and the waffles are to die for. Underwhelming. Been here a handful of times for breakfast expecting a good meal & service, but each time I've been disappointed. I can't understand why anyone would give this place more than 2 stars. The food is average at best - I ordered the meatlovers skillet this morning and it was a slop tray of undercooked eggs, thin brown gravy, and a few small bits of meat. We ordered chocolate milk for my son and the waitress gave him scalding hot chocolate. He burned his mouth and we were billed for the hot chocolate. My wife found hair in her french toast. No refills for any of our drinks. The atmosphere is gross even for a diner. Spilled food on the seats left from the previous party. Bathrooms reeked like piss - we could smell it from our table. Most guests here must think it's acceptable to wear pajama pants to a restaurant. The prices were affordable I guess, but not worth the experience. We won't be coming back. My advice: drive just 5 minutes further down the road and try Real Food Cafe, Wolfgang's, Cherie Inn, or Marie Carib's. read more
