First the food was outstanding secondly the service was ok. That being said it is without a doubt a must eat. The ambiance is fantastic and the location cannot be beat. We came during the summer of 09 Vail is simply amazing the Gore Creek which depending on where you're sitting is right outside the open air window. My girlfriend and I discovered Russell's about six years ago and it remains our favorite restaurant for many reasons. The service is always friendly, knowledgable, and eager to serve, and the food has always been fantastic. The filet is pretty much our standard and it never disappoints. A server told us that the beef is bought from a local ranch and is well-treated and organic fed. I also believe that the cows are given daily massages and possibly yoga sessions. It's that tender. The sides were always fresh and flavorful, and the appetizers are excellent. I highly recommend the bacon-wrapped scallops. They are crisp, garlicky little balls of heaven. Also, the wine list is well-balanced with a great selection without being excessive. The restaurant itself is cozy and warm with some very nice views. If you want a great, un-rushed meal, this is a perfect place to try. One warning, though - you'll be tempted to tip really, really well. But it's worth it. read more

Russell's is a wonderful, quaint restaurant right on Gore Creek, next to the covered bridge in Vail. It is a beautiful setting. The restaurant is very nice but not so upscale that one is uncomfortable. We didn't find it too noisy as most restaurants seem to be these days. Nicely done in size and decor. We had the Tuna Sashimi and Filet Mignon and both were perfect. Wonderful presentation, perfectly prepared and fantastic flavor. Don't forget to have some of the scalloped potatoes for a real taste treat. The service was excellent. Kudos to the servers and those who keep those water glasses full! This is the place my wife and I go for special occasions. We were introduced to it by our friends Debbie and Dennis and now anytime we want to celebrate a birthday or anniversary this is our spot. If your a big seafood buff I challenge you to find a better serving of KING CRAB legs anywhere in the world. ( NOT KIDDING ) They have the best King Crab legs I have ever had anywhere. The evening started out nicely, ended in. disaster. I have eaten here many times, am a Denver visitor and was bringing an out-of-town family for what I expected would be a great dinner. Wrong!! Our table of four was seated next to a round table of 6 men including one of the owners, Ron. Ron was drunk, loud and obnoxious. Not loud--- but literally screaming and yelling at the top of his lungs for two hours. We kept thinking he would quiet down but no way. We complained to our wait person about the obvious outrageous behavior. But she said he was the owner and there was nothing she could do plus the restaurant was full and we couldn't relocate. Then we overheard him bragging about ordering tempura shrimp...an item "not on the menu and fantastic" we heard him say multiple times. So someone in my party inquired about it...we were told it couldn't be done and only would be prepared for the owner. Our diner was not happy, especially since we had to listen about how great this dish was numerous times from the sloppy drunk owner, Ron. Finally, Ron's dinner was over (we were thankful) but as he walked by he picked up a soiled napkin full of food off the floor, stumbled and plopped it down on my "to go" box at our table. I was disgusted and almost walked out. The diner who had wanted the tempura shrimp asked him why it was unavailable to us; Ron explained, slurring his words, that it would slow down his line to offer it "but it was fantastic and too bad for you" he said with a nasty smirk. My guests were disgusted by his terrible manners and said they would never return. After he left, the server apologized a number of times. She was so embarrassed she was red in the face. I plan to request a refund from the other partner, Mike, but think patrons should think twice... No, three times.. before EVER setting foot in Russell's. read more

Went here for a bachelor party and was actually pleasantly surprised. The service was outstanding and they took very good care of us. A friend who couldn't come ordered appetizers for dinner and took care of the bill. That true gentlemanly stuff, take note fellas. The appetizers were ok, nothing earth shattering but who am I to turn down free tuna sashimi and bacon wrapper scallops. The bacon overpowered the scallop but is that really a bad thing? Good vibe, not too loud, nice log cabin style restaurant. It's hard to rate a restaurant during 1st visits or special big group occasions. But I'll do it anyway - it's my job. The colorado lamb chops were stupid (stupid means good). They were as good as any lamb chop I've had including some swanky weddings and the mustard crusted ones at Il Mulino. This place has to be living on a previous reputation. We had 7:30 dinner reservations and we were very hungry. We arrived early and went in for a drink at the bar. I saw them clearing off a table and I was hoping that was our table. We went outside to consume our drinks and wait for our table. Finally at 7:45 my husband went inside to ask how long and we were told that our table was ready. Guess what? We were seated at the table that I saw cleared at 7:15. We ordered a salad and it was excellent. My husband ordered the 16oz bone in ribeye. It had a lot of grizzle and we really should have returned it. We told the waiter and he apologized. My husband said that he bet that the waiter didn't tell the manager so on the way out, my husband told the manager, who confirmed that the waiter had not told him. Dark and clubby, this old-school meat and potatoes steak and seafood house serves up solid steak fish and crab legs from an ultra-traditional steakhouse menu. Very disappointing. You'd expect a steak house to have great steak.... The New York Strip was a thick tough cut of meat and had no bone. The peppercorn sauce was weak and thin with no peppercorns. What kind of a steak house doesn't know steak!? Also THE GREEN BEANS THEY SERVED WITH THE STEAK WERE FROZEN. They were limp, unflavored, and pathetic. Perhaps the first clue should have been when the french onion soup had Mozzarella instead of Gruyere cheese on top and there was no french bread below the cheese. When we mentioned it to the waitress she sent the manager over who brought out a plate of the mozzarella cheese to show us and explained they have a Swiss chef. WHY would a Swiss chef use mozzarella?! It made no sense. For a nice steak house you'd expect them to have their act together. Trust us, go somewhere else!!!! read more

Wad able to eat one and half of the two. Came with rice and veggies that I didn't eat. Hubby got the filet with crab and said it was one of the best steaks ever eaten. Ate with a bottle of Oregon Pinot noir wine by the bottle was thirty percent off as well. And the meal started with a nice warm baquette and whipped butter. Even though some of the yelp reviews are poor we are big on creating our own opinion and giving places a shot.....this place was some of the most amazing food I have had in a long time. My wife had the king crab and 8oz filet and I had the prime rib. Nothing skipped a beat (ie: service , appetizers, drinks, etc.).....the manager Michael Scola even took the time to ask is how everything was....the prices were a bit high but let's be real nothing in Vail is cheap. If you are looking for a great sit down steak dinner this is the place. This is a Vail classic and has been here for almost 3 decades. It is my favorite steakhouse in Vail with a warm, cozy environment, attentive service and top quality meats and seafood. My personal favorites are the exceptional escargot, served out of the shell and which have a very distinctive flavor, and the house special, the Steak Diane, a perfectly seasoned exceptionally tender prime 8 oz filet with a classic sauce. My wife loves grilled salmon and this is her favorite place to go for it in Vail. Also highly recommend the Parmesan mashed potatoes. read more

The town of Vail truly can boast an attitude. The charming city offers world class skiing, and amazingly good food and entertainment. Russell's Steakhouse falls into that category. Though I agree the service sometimes seems fantastic, in the summer when tourism drops, the service dips a bit. However, thankfully, the steaks remain fantastic. I sampled the 12oz Teriyaki Steak, grilled to perfection. That in itself deserves credit and praise. I am one of the steak eating minority who orders a med-well temperature. Most steak houses foul up this request, often forcing me to ask the kitchen to butterfly cut my steak to insure sufficient cooking, yet saving the prime piece of beef from burning. Not necessary at Russell's. The meat melted in my mouth. Perfectly marinated in teriyaki, soy, and garlic, the flavors infused into the choice beef and easily sated my hunger and need for a major Iron infusion. :-) The russet potatoes only tickled my palate, but I think next time basic mash potatoes with butter would round out the meal better. As a side dish, a healthy bed of asparagus spears added color and texture to the meal, but why take up room in your stomach with asparagus when sitting before you awaits 12 oz of steak?? Lastly, the bread was hearty and crunchy. Not bad, but had Russell's brought out a better French baguette with true French butter, this would have landed me in a food coma. So in closing, I admit this is a narrow perspective and review of Russell's. My past visits here, and just this past weekend, only involved steak. My advice.....Forget the salads, soups, seafood, and skip whatever else. If you want seafood, go to Boston, Seattle, a coastline somewhere. If you desire a salad, go to MAD GREENS. It is called a Meat and Potatoes diet for a reason. read more

Nice place. Typical mountain ski resort decoration. The hostess super friendly and they had 20% discount since its not high season. We were a party of 6 and all my friends had dine there before and love it. I had the spinach salad which needed a bit more of vinagre or lemon, was ok, but nothing amazing. As main course I had the Porterhouse, hats off . Amazing taste and perfectly cooked. Comes with potatoes with cream and cheese really good. We also had the bbq ribs, super good. King crab legs super good and huge size. The onion soups was not so good. At the end we tried the chocolate cake, very nice one. Totally coming back. read more

My family has been coming to Russell's for as long as I can remember, and it feels like no trip to Vail is complete without their potatoes au gratin. I almost always order the steak teriyaki, and I'll start with the French onion soup if I'm really hungry - both are excellent. And we *always* order the potatoes au gratin - two orders if we're with a big group. The potatoes au gratin are easily the best side dish in the Vail Valley! The only thing I don't like about Russell's is that it can be tough to get a reservation at a desirable time and we almost always have to wait for our table even though we have reservations (but it's rarely more than 10 minutes). read more
