I work at an office of all Russians and my co workers have been slowing integrating me (or converting me, which ever you prefer) into russian culture. My co workers really wanted to take me to a russian banya, and it sounded like fun, so I was down! Although we had planned out our trip to the banya in advance, the day of, most of my coworkers dropped out for one reason or another, so it was just me and my one coworker. Well, not to fear, we were going to go anyway, and have a good time! Finding the place was a little difficult, we walked right past it. There is a sign, but in the dark, it wasn't the easiest to spot the entrance. The place wasn't so crowded when we got there, but I could see how on the weekend, it could definitely fill up and be very crowded. I could see if someone wasn't russian, they might have a hard time. It's not that anyone was rude, quite the opposite, everyone was super friendly, however, pretty much EVERY conversation was in russian and my coworker had to translate everything for me. We walked in and told to hand over our phones/wallets for our locker keys. I was a little nervous at first, but front desk puts the phones and wallets in a sealed zip lock, in a lock box behind the desk that coordinates with your locker. No mix ups! The locker room was well kept, clean, had showers with soaps. Although, the shower curtains were see-through... I would have preferred like a shower door on the stalls, or something. We collected our towels and staked out an area by the pool and dropped our things. I let my co worker lead the way because, well, I've never been, didn't know what to expect. First up, the [wet] sauna. I haven't been in a sauna in a long time. But, I'm a fan. But then again, I love the heat. I'm a summer baby, the heat is my friend! I especially enjoyed that you had cool buckets of water to cool you down. Although, as an older russian man in the sauna instructed us, don't use the water if you can help it, better to sweat it out! The point is to sweat out all the toxins in your blood! Okay, whatever you say! After that, we showered off, and took a dip in the pool. The pool was freezing. And it's not because we had just been in the sauna. I get it. The way your supposed to do it is, you sweat it out in the sauna and then jump into a freezing pool. But this was just WAY to cold for me. Before we even got in, a couple of older men had warned us that the pool was cold. After the pool, time for the steam room! I love the steam room. We did a body scrub and my skin felt amazing! It still feels amazing! Big fan. After the steam room, and a quick rinse, we ordered some food, because that's what you do at the banya! We ordered a greek salad, vereniki (dumplings) and my co worker got shrimp. I didn't have that high hopes for the food, because, let's be honest, this is a bath house, but I was wrong, the food was delicious. The salad itself was huge and delicious. Perfect radio with the dressing. My co worker said the shrip were to perfection and the Vereniki, so good! There is a 'mens only' sauna where the men can go naked, like they do traditionally. Obviously we didn't try that out. We also didn't check out the dry sauna. The next time we come back, because there will be a next time, I definitely want to try out the platza treatment. I do wish they had a jacuzzi or hot tub, but I guess that it's traditionally russian? It's less expensive then spa castle, entry is $40. Can't wait to come back! We had fun! read more

"Russian Baths in Brooklyn" (former Neck Road Banya) is the oldest Russian Bath in Brooklyn. It is not the biggest or the most popular, but overall it is currently my favorite Russian Bath in New York City. If anything, this bath excels in the management's talent to make the best out of every small detail. For example, the place had no space for another sauna around the pool so a few years ago they built one for men only behind the locker rooms. It is a huge hot Russian sauna where men can be traditionally naked. They keep the temperature in this sauna hotter and next to it men can hang out in a separate men-only area drinking beer and having long conversations - exactly like so many Russians used to do in the past. Creating the men-only area made the main pool area more family-friendly with less men, gentler heat in saunas, and more space for children to run around. Everyone wins, genius! If not forced by circumstances, this layout should have been designed originally. The bath's main hall is dominated by a full-sized swimming pool - it was a bit on a cold side, but it is really pleasant after a sauna. The ceilings are relatively low giving the Bath a cozy feel. There are tables on two sides of the pool. On the opposite sides they have 3 saunas. The most popular Russian sauna has decent heat and is a great place for platza. The second - shvitz has faucets for cold water buckets. I visited the steam room with children, who usually are not particularly fond of the heat. This time they were very happy and busy playing with water and pouring it on themselves and everyone around while adults were sweating on the upper benches. The Turkish steam room is hot, foggy and clean - what else could you wish for? The staff is the best I've ever encountered in any of the Russian Baths. Young, smiling, professional - the type of staff you expect to run into in a high end spa, or top restaurant, but you never get in a Russian Bath. Talking about the restaurant - fantastic! The restaurant has a hockey theme - the original owner was close to some famous Russian Players in the 80's. Framed jerseys and memorabilia decorate the walls. The plates and glasses are super clean and look unexpectedly expensive, the beer has good selection and is served in chilled glasses, soups are to die for and everything we've tried was very tasty. Note, it can get expensive quickly. We snacked more than ate, but for a family of four, the restaurant bill including 2 beers, a teapot and a tip was over $120. As with any other Russian Banya in the city, on weekends Neck Road Bath gets crowded. I suggest coming earlier - the younger generation shows up later. The place is not perfect, it is missing a cold plunge to jump into after a sauna - I wish they'd build it in the corner of the pool. It has no whirlpools, but that's probably a plus - less chlorine in the air. Like in most Russian Baths there's no attention paid to music to compliment the experience. And a simple bowl of eucalyptus leaves under the steam faucet in the Turkish room would cost nothing and would make the whole place smell heavenly. But, these are small details that do not distract from the fact that it is one of the best places I can imagine to spend half a day with or without kids. My first ever Russian Baths experience was wonderful. I chose this place based on other Yelp reviews and photos. It is super clean, with very welcoming staff, lots of space in all rooms and around the pool (on a week day) and the food was delicious! My partner and I both had the body scrub and platza treatments and, although the heat from the platza was a lot to deal with for these new kids, I cannot ever remember my skin feeling so smooth! In general, I left the baths SO happy, intensely relaxed and babbling to friends about it and encouraging them to come next time we visit! BYO swimmers and water-friendly footwear (flip-flops). They have plenty of towels for all and you can keep changing out wet for dry. A crowd of seemingly local people, mostly adults, a few young people, and one little kid being escorted by an adult. A mix of groups and couples of varying ages. A higher ratio of men (and a mostly all male staff) but, as a gender non-conforming person, I felt very comfortable and safe. The guy who did our scrub and platza treatments (Eugenie?) was super polite, responded to requests for pressure or heat changes and very professional - only left us with positive things to say! read more

I've been here twice and totally forgot to post a review. I honestly don't know what makes a Russian bath great per se, but I can definitely say I had a great time here. Nothing beats getting a nice steam going and chewing on dried fish and sipping on giant pints of beers in between trips to the sauna. They were also pretty accommodating, allowing us to add eucalyptus into the room. The dinner afterwards was really satisfying too: papirechka and beans was awesome and the kharcho really hit the spot. Reminds me of my childhood in Brooklyn after all these years of being away, very nostalgic experience! read more

This was my first time in a russian bathhouse, for what it is, I assume that it's one of the best, given it was filled with people nonstop, the food we had was quite tasty, and we didn't even try all of it!! With that said, I guess after being used to larger and more luxurious spas where I can actually relax and not feel like I'm being watched by old Russian men the entire time.... the experience was "Bla"...It had 3 different saunas and a relatively large pool in the middle, it's a very open concept, it's byob for any snacks you may want to bring in as well... idk it wasn't anything special to me, I like more options and space, maybe I'll be back if I ever visit my friends again, but for me to specifically make plans to go here will probably not happen. Also it's $45 for entrance, when it's around $50 at a more luxurious spa...I was really hoping for something better given so many people rave about this place. read more

Well, first of all this is a clean place, which is a huge plus. I really like the women's locker room and especially the bathroom... the toilet has a plastic wrap on the seat that can be changed with a press of a button. This is a first time I have seen such a gadget and I think it is very useful and should be used in more places. The only complaint I have about the locker room is the hair dryer. It would take me forever to dry my hair with that thing; it is not strong enough. The saunas are great - no complaints. However, the water in the pool is TOO COLD! Brr... The food was OK, but the french fries were HORRIBLE! The worst I have ever had! - so tiny and soft, not tasty at all. The grilled chicken was good though. Also, I did not like the waiter much. I wanted to order Ukrainian Borscht and when he said they did not have it I decided not to get anything and just share food with my boyfriend. The waiter wanted to MAKE ME order something :/... Also, we said we did not want beer after he first asked and then asked us TWO more times... Oh please, I know you want people to order more to make money, but calm down a little! A place truly understood by only Russian people. You would think that sitting in a 200 degree room with other semi naked, hairy men, would be something that most guys would want to avoid. But NO! we run to the banya because it is the most relaxing thing around our way in Brooklyn. It is a classic activity, for which you need at least 1 bottle of Vodka (per every 2 people), taranka (dry fish) and off course the venek (leaves that you get slapped with). All this makes your experience that much better and NECK RD banya is by far the best for that. Food is great and affordable, the new steam room is amazing and secluded if you do not want to be around any children and the staff has been the same for at least the last 10-15 years. read more

Really great and laid back Russian Bath house. While this is not the most glamorous bath house, it has plenty of space and plenty of good food to make up for that and usually not as crowded as some other spots. They have two unisex dry saunas, and one men's only, they have a steam room as well as a good size pool. The eating area is also nice; I love all the food here, from the meat to the salads to the pelmenyi you can't go wrong. Staff is nice and attentive and they never run out of towels! Just picture this: recent "polar vortex". Heaps of snow everywhere. Freeeeeeezing temps. Crammed little street and, if you look good enough, you'll see a long slippery walk way along the side of a building, with small sign "Russian Banya". You enter, and... Nice big pool in the middle. Steam room. Two saunas, with dry and wet heat. Little tables around the pool, for tea and drinks. Café a couple steps away - far enough not to see the pool, and close enough not to have to get dressed (yes, you can go eat in your bathing suit and/or wrapped in a towel). Warm inviting heaven in this weather! Food was tasty. Pricey? A bit, probably, but just a little compared to other Russian restaurants in the area (full menu is on their website). Saunas, pool, changing room were clean and well-maintained. No shortage of towels. They have slippers too, but not disposable, so you are probably better off bringing your own. Service was good and attentive, both in the café and pool-side (they only serve drinks and snacks poolside, if you want a meal you need to go to café; but you can order poolside and they will call you when the meal is served, which I found awesome). What to bring? Money, bathing suit, slippers. I've seen women putting on various oils and lotions. Overpriced? I didn't like the fact they were charging children of any age $20 entrance fee. $40 for adults, provided you'll probably stay there for the whole day, is ok. Worth the trip? Hell yeah! My absolute go to Russian bathhouse in the NY area. This place has been here for probably 40 years. The saunas are out of this world, absolute 1st class. They also have a restaurant that serves phenomenal Russian cuisine. One of the things that surprises me the most is the rib eye steak they have, it is honestly better than any steakhouse I've ever had steak in. The services give exceptional service. Great place to come with kids and let them swim. The waiters back in January/February were horrible. You can see a culture of bazaar yelling and shouting over customer's heads. We complained to the manager and, to our surprise, he listened. We came back this weekend and that issue has been solved. Much more mature staff working now. Great place, will come back again and again. If you want to learn how to swim, I have seem trainers come to do personal sessions. I have been coming here since I was a kid. The food is great. They have a full restaurant kitchen and you can get a full restaurant meal with the added bonus of being able to eat it in your swim trunks if you so choose. The pool is great to soak in and the three dry saunas are always hot. My suggestion: get nice and toasty in a sauna then walk into one of the shower stalls that are right outside and pull pull the rope to have gallons of cold water dumped on your head. That is an experience you will not soon forget. Or if you are a traditionalist, have a platz. There is also a wet steam room for those that are so inclined. The men's area behind the men's locker room is nice too. TVs with sport, waiter service, temperature control and a sauna so cavernous, the thing has an echo. I don't know how they have that huge sauna and the outside area is kept cool, the wonders of insulation I guess. A friendly and mostly English speaking staff. I am giving the place three stars only because it was not what I expected it to be at all. Further down the banya was described as a 1980 Soviet style social club, which really nails it. The saunas are ok but way too small. A pool that looked to be heavily chlorinated takes up most of the space. No deck chairs to lounge or relax. The place is mostly frequented by Russian families. People were just sitting at the picnic tables eating their food. Way too pricey for what it is. After all, an interesting experience. read more

My first time to any banya and absolutely hooked! My husband and I came on a cold Saturday at noon and were able to get seats right away. I jumped in the shower real quick then dove right in to the traditional Russian style sauna. Right away the few people in the sauna realized I had no idea what I was doing as I did not have the felt hat on. So as one man explained to me why I needed to wear one (at this point my husband threw his on my head and ran out to buy a second one for himself) by the time my husband returned a woman was kind enough to show me (or use?) the platza. It was like an all over back scratch. I absolutely loved it. When she was done she directed me to walk out, pull the shower rope then jump into the bath. It took everything in me to not scream when the shock of freezing cold water hit me- but then I felt great. Like absolutely amazing. A lot of tea, some fruit and a few more rounds of steam, cold shower, warm bath and a man came over to ask me (he in Russian, me in English) if I wanted my husband to rub sea salt on me. It was like every person who realized it was my first time there made it their mission to make it better than the next person. After finishing everything we had dinner. Food was incredible. The portions were huge. We left relaxed, full, and beyond happy. The place was clean, the staff friendly. It was full of families, young people, old people, couples. I would absolutely come back. I visited this place many times, I went there with my family; we liked sauna because it was pretty clean comparing to other places and waiters/people who still work there are nice and know me well. Yesterday, I had a "fight" with the owner/manager of the place. I asked him if (my mom and I) can change a table because we were sitting in front of the door that opened and closed for about an hour (the weather outside was -14 degree cold) and my feet were cold in seconds after I came out of hot sauna. So, the manager (a bit overweighted guy, who wears a different from his coworkers T-shirt) told me that they have a table for two, then I told him:" I forgot to mention, my sister will come soon, can we get a table for three? It would be just great!" The manager did not want to deal with us. He turned to the guy who was passing clean towels and whispered a bad word in Russian and turned his face to us making his face like "what the f**k you want". I told him that we just asked if we can change a table and can you say no or we don't have any tables as of right now. The guy with the towels interfered, using rude words like "you don't like something?", I told him that I did not use any bad words, if you start talking that way-I can do it too, but that's not a solution, and then he said "Don't threaten me! Are you threatening me?" , I did not mean to say "i can use bad words too" in a way to threaten I meant to be rude. The manager told us that we have to leave the place and that he gives us a refund. The guy who gives towels and the manager were too rude and talked in aggressive way. I could wait if they would only tell me something like "it will take 10 minutes or an hour to get a table for three, is it ok with you?". I would be definitely positive about it. Customer service is supposed to be number one in business but not for the manager of the place. If I was a man, they would not talk to me that way, It's too low for men to talk to a lady that way whoever they are either managers/owners/God or a person who owns the planet Earth. I payed $18 for tea we ordered and left $5 cash for a waiter, but manager threw $5 on the side where I was standing and said: "You can take your $5", I told him: "you did not take care of our table so that's not for you", he said that none of the workers need my pitiful five dollars. At that moment, I felt so bad for the manager, who probably has so many psychological issues (and it's ok) but not expressing them the way he talked to me. He made me cry that day, I won't come to that place again. My star won't make any sense but, people, If you want to make the world a better place, do not visit the places like that( it's just my subjective opinion). Terrible experience. Came for my husband's birthday party with friends and brought kids along, 8and 10. They just adopted a new rule: no kids under 8 and we had to turn around. One of our friends came in 15 minutes before us and paid full price. Once we learned that we have to look for a different place that allows children they refused to refund his money for 15 minutes of banya experience. this place is the best on Sundays, to sit and relax and have nobody bother you there's a men's section in the back with their own tables and privacy which is a plus If you want to have "brotime" there is a small smoking section in the back too the Locker rooms are very clean and well kept the steam room smelled ridiculously good, minty and citrus and there's a faucet with cold water and buckets to cool down there's two saunas. ones hotter then the other, they are fairly sized, but for the amount of people that come here vs. the space of the saunas they're definitely not big enough in my opinion the food there is fresh and in large portions, you'll leave the sports bar and restaurant satisfied with seafood, meats, soups, and fruits, desserts I have to say the service here SUCKS. they need to hire waiters that actually care about their customers, in this place you have to chase the waiters down. read more

This place is the bomb. Dry sauna, wet sauna, cold water drenches, full size pool, etc. At $45, one could consider it a splurge. But you can spend as much or as little time there as you like. It's a bona ride Russian bath house. The staff welcome you, inform you (if you're a first timer) and the rest of the patrons do, too. Everybody is so comfortable! This place is the epitome of chill - it's that relaxing. Whether you want to go the detox route or have a couple of icy cold beers of the world - all of this is at your disposal. And I was given free salty snacks! Of several varieties! And you can swim laps and laps in the pool! No lanes! No wannabe swimmer jerks! Normally, I feel my inner germaphobe coming on when someone tries to take me to a "spa" kinda place. No worries, here. There's lots of staff constantly on top of this - endless supplies of clean, dry towels. Non-scary surfaces to sit and lie upon. And clean, well-maintained women and men's locker rooms. A lock is given to you when you first check in. Bring flip flops, wear a bathing suit and bring your own personal woolen wacky hat to wear (if you wish - I just admired the ones I saw). Just remember to get your personal effects and give the lock back as you slurp out the door. My muscles have not been that seriously relaxed in decades. I'll be back. read more

We often bring the whole family from NJ to this Banya for a whole day. There is something for everyone: kids like pool, my husband and his friends love dry and wet heat and special oak leaf treatment, and everyone enjoys massage. At the end of the day, you sit down at their restaurant for one-of-a-kind meal. They have it all: mouth watering appetizers and pickled veggies; lamb, fish and of course dessert. I recommend spicy and juicy pickled tomatoes, calf liver done Prague style, grilled Bronzino, chicken kebabs and variety of salads. Last week we brought relatives with us and, of course, they loved the experience. They said food was absolutely the best and the whole experience was a real treat. People working there are very nice and helpful. Uncle Kostya who does "the brooms" is a true professional. Rustam and Timur are gracious hosts, make you feel special every time:-). I came here last sunday on the 02.02.2018 only because my friend offered to go there so i decided to give it another chance. Never again. The service was bad from the time i walked in the door. First of all, the cash register should not be visible to the people who are already inside and relaxing especially for $45.. I've been to more than one sauna in different places and states and the cash register is not in the open like here. When i gave the cashier the money, he threw the change on the table..He is a "zhlob". How can you keep these kind of people at your workplace?? No one deserves to be treated like that especially the people that are giving you business. When i already changed my clothes..There were no signs to where the towels are.. then someone showed me..They were in a plastic basket inside some dark and dirty room. When i came home.. i told my father about this place and he told me that a while ago when he came to this place.. He saw the man in a laundry room with dirty/wet towels on the floor and he was throwing them inside the dryer..After that, my father never went back there..Disgusting!!! When i was sitting by my table in the pool area, the servers took forever to come. The tables are so close together, i have to move every time someone needs to pass. The saunas are small and there was no place to sit. The shower by the sauna which only has cold water had some kind of a rope hanging to pull on for the water.. That's what i get after paying $45??!!! Maddening!! Also..There were wooden boards to be used in the saunas to place under your behind.. Genius idea..there were splinters on both sides of the boards... Are you guys crazy or what???..That is complete carelessness. The place is old and only changed a bit after many years. Among the numerous "Russian Bath houses" in Brooklyn this is by far the best place to go to when you are looking for a good sweat. The locker rooms as well as the saunas are always clean. The saunas are extremely hot and well maintained. The staff is super friendly and I recommend the tradition "venik massage" and the Swedish massage. This place is like mini vacation every time I go I feel rejuvenated. Their body scrub service is great and your skin feels silky smooth every time. The food is the best in Brooklyn.
