I'm Italian American and from the NY/CT area. I grew up with AMAZING pizza on every corner, I worked in New Haven for a while which is pretty much the epicenter of wood fire pizza. As such, pizza isn't just an occasional quick meal, it's a staple. It's part of the rhythm of the week. It's as important as homemade meatballs on weekends and drool worthy lasagna on holidays. On to the review: Russo's makes a good wood fire pizza, great crust, good sauce, triangular cut. So far it's hitting all the marks. Unfortunately it's the cheese that falls flat. It's... not the best. The problem is their signature cheese is a combination of mozz, provolone, and MUNSTER. 'Only mozz' isn't an option. Even a 'mozz/parm' mix isn't an option. Yes I'm sure. Yes I called to check. Sure they have alternatives like cheddar, feta, and ricotta... but no traditional pizza cheese. Munster is fine on sandwiches but on pizza it's only tolerable, not crave-worthy. It's a shame because they almost had the trifecta (good crust, good sauce, and good cheese). For now we'll probably order once in a while and keep making our own 3 star pizza at home. Hope to see mozz in the future though. Oh customer service was lacking. The woman at the pick up counter ignored me for five minutes while talking with co-workers & answering multiple phone calls as I stood at the counter. No "be with you in a sec," no mumbled "sorry" as the phone rang again and, again, it took priority over the drawn out process of asking "what's the name for pickup" before answering and multitasking. Just a really good attempt at making no eye contact and pretending I was invisible. I might bring a stopwatch on the next pick up and see if they break the '5 min no acknowledgement' record, make a game out of it. Not a dealbreaker like the Munster but worth knowing ahead of time so you aren't surprised. read more

First visit here, early Saturday afternoon. Dead inside. Unique ordering process as they have gone to a kiosk method. I was really looking forward to this pizza as some collogues of mine had hyped it up. Garlic cheese bread was the best part of the meal, generous on the cheese, about what you would have expected cheesy bread to be like. The big letdown was the pizza. We ordered the Mob scene, meatballs atop, but they were sliced so thin, all the flavor was lost. The dough had decent flavor and had a good back around the edges but the enter of the pizza was soggy, which was a big turn off for me. Russo's worked particularly well for us as we travelled through this part of Ohio on our way to PA. I was able to order ahead. We arrived and our food was ready to go which saved us a lot of time. My friend and I were starving on a Sunday afternoon and since I had never been here before, we decided pizza sounded just right. We pulled right in, threw on our masks and made our way up to the ordering counter. We both wanted leftovers so we each got a pizza and a side salad. I opted for the pesto margherita pizza and a caesar side salad. The salad was much bigger than I expected it and it hit the spot. I ate every bite. Pizza is much better as leftovers than salad so I ate a piece or two and saved the rest for later. The crust was a bit underdone for my liking and I knew if I heated it up at home, it would be great! I really liked the pesto and a few hours later when I needed dinner, a couple minutes in the oven and it was pristine. They had all the healthy and safety requirements taken care of and I even noticed my cousin on a plaque on the wall for eating the most slices...13 totally! Could I beat that, NOPE. All in all, I would go back, I'll just be sure to request that I get my pizza extra done. read more

Had Russo's today with my dad and enjoyed it. While we have several concepts like this in Columbus (Pizza Cucinova, Mod, Blaze), it seemed pretty unique for the area. I had the margherita pizza, which was exactly what I'd hoped for. The crust was perfectly chewy, cheese nice and melted, sauce on point. (Though I am just realizing it didn't have tomatoes on it, which are pretty standard for margheritas.) The environment was welcoming. I was impressed with all the Covid precautions they took (barriers between lines, spacing on the floor, partitions between booths). Definitely recommend if you're in the area! read more

Russo's is a newer Zanesville pizza place. It looks thoroughly modern inside. This is another pick your ingredients as you go along the counter place. It rapidly cooks your pizza in minutes. They also have options for vegans. It looks a lot like a chain. Inside there's all this corporate looking equipment and signage. Rest assured that this is the only location in the world. One cool thing is the pop machine with the flavor shots you can add. They also serve alcohol, but it's just stuff like Bud and Yuengling. I had the build your own pizza. It's about $9 for the 12 inch size. This lets you get a certain amount of toppings. Mine came with jalapeños, mushrooms, and spinach. They have a cheese made for vegans. It melts just like regular cheese. The pizza comes out real fast so you don't have that much of a wait. It's a guild place for a small gathering. It's also pretty family friendly. This seems to be popular for birthday parties. read more

We had out of town guests. One from NYC, wanting pizza. Having seen Russo's recently renovated, we decided on it for lunch. Definitely not disappointed! Friendly and prompt server. Our NYC guest had pizza and loved it. The others had choices from the 'pick 2' lunch special. We all enjoyed the pizza, gigantic meatball, tomato soup, and salads. Pizza was pretty good - cheese and pep seemed fresh and decent quality. Salad was just ok. Weird chicken pieces in it and just plain old lettuce. Don't expect much pleasantries from the staff, not rude, just like "whatever". Too interested in the football game on the tv's. I love this place so much that we drive 45 minutes each way when craving. See previous stellar review. Last time we were there we were so disappointed. First of all the person who took our order and was prepping was not friendly and welcoming. She looked and acted like she was clueless. The usually yeasty yummy crust was flat and mushy. The sauce was still good . Not much cheese. The veggies had an off taste. My husband got pepperoni and ate one piece. Didn't even take the rest home. This Zanesville, Ohio joint does traditional wood-fires pizza, and they have a portable Italian wood stove that goes to many fairs and festivals around Ohio. I've tried Russo's pizza two years in a row, as they've been stationed at the Circleville Pumpkin Show. I forget what I had last year at the Show, but can definitely comment on my 2018 experience. Shared The Pumpkin Patch - a pumpkin alfredo white sauce, sliced sausage, spinach all atop. Great pick! The wood-fires crust was wonderful: slightly crisp on the edges, every bite was soft and chewy - delish! More sausage slices would have been icing on the pizza pie, but I'm not complaining. $12 for the six artisan slices was reasonable. I'd definitely stop by Russo's if in the Zanesville area, and have a hankering for wood-fired pizza. read more

Absolutely awesome little spot. Make your own pizza is a quaint little idea but this joint just plain rocks. Garlic Alfredo sauce? Get out of town. It was amazing! Went here with some friends who moved into Zanesville and I came out to visit. They had been here before. Today we ordered 1 BIANCO (not sure on spelling) and that had the garlic Alfredo. Aaaaaaaawwwwsome sauce, literally. A few cranberries, is was beyond adjective classification. I had the sweet and spicy and removed the peppers. (Peppers don't belong on pizza). The sausage was sliced, not ground and it was the best sausage on pizza I have ever had. Then let's talk about buckeye brownie. Mmmmmmmmmm, peanut butter topping and a great brownie. We had so much pizza that we had to split the brownie into 5 pieces. If you are driving through it is a requirement to stop here and worth the few minutes off the freeway. This is Zanesville. We visited on a Tuesday for lunch as part of a big group. It was my inaugural trip. Individual pizzas are prepped in front of you Subway-style. We ordered the Tuscan (with chicken and spinach), the Margarita, the Meatball Parm and a few salads. They ran about $9 each. Everything was perfectly baked in the brick oven directly behind the counter. Each of the pizza crusts had the perfect charring and were sizzling hot upon arrival; however, I found the Tuscan to be drowning in a little too much olive oil. The salads were fresh and the dressings acceptable. Otherwise, the service was quick and attentive, and the sanitation grade was a 98. The dining area was comfortable and is surrounded by five widescreen TVs on its walls. Will be back. read more

Don't pass this place up! We found it online and stopped before a Friday night football game. I'm glad I wore my "fat pants." This is a counter service restaurant with design-your-one pizza and subs. You walk down the line (think Subway) and pick your crust (they have a gluten-free option), sauce, protein, veggies, seasonings, and top sauces. You can also opt to order one of their pre-designed pies. Have a seat at the table and they'll call you when it's ready. They have some domestic beer and craft brews, also. Pizzas serve 1-2 people. We were impressed with the vast array of toppings. If you're easily overwhelmed, you may want to peruse the menu ahead of time. Our pizzas were as unique as our personalities and because you don't have to wait for someone to run your food to your table, your pies are piping hot upon arrival. Be prepared for leftovers. Conveniently, they offer carry-out boxes at the beverage station so you don't even have to approach the service counter to request one. The restaurant and its restrooms were clean and modern. It's also family-friendly. There's extra parking in the rear if the front lot is full. This is a great gem in Zanesville. I wouldn't be surprised if we trek the hour to Zanesville just to eat there again soon. read more

Russo's feels like a spot you would visit in the Short North in Columbus. Trendy and modern but with flavors reminiscent of Picnic Pizza...which makes sense since it's the same family! The chance to create your own pizza, choosing sauce, cheese, and toppings or selecting a "redesigned" pie reminds me of the Chiptole model. For wood fired pizza this place moves fast and though you may spend some time in line you spend hardly amy waiting for your food...and believe me, it is worth it! The only thing I was disappointed about was the lack of garlic flavor in the garlic oil. In addition to the Tuscan pizza (which I added the tomato sauce to) and my dad's own pizza creation, we ordered the Garlic Sticks only to be disappointed by the semi burnt, parmesan pizza crust that we received; there wasn't even a hint of garlic flavor. Considering Russo's opened only a no th ago, I'm hopeful they will remedy the lack of garlic in their garlic oil so that their garlic sticks can hold true to their name! Given the more modern, casual vibe, I see Russo's giving Adornetto's a run for their money with the younger crowd...especially post-football Friday night! The multiple televisions, large amounts of group seating, and fast dining makes for the perfect "hang out with good food" spot...and you can't best the price! read more

We stopped after visiting the area. Food was fast, hot and the toppings on point. We got two pizzas, a salad and some pasta. Pasta was good but a little saucy. The pizzas were awesome. I had driven past this pizza place a few times while working in Zanesville. Today I made an effort to run in and get a pizza for lunch. There is plenty of parking in front and inside I found a clean and partitioned dining area with socially distanced tables and plastic dividers for COVID safe indoor dining. The friendly staff welcomed me immediately and I ordered The Mobster. This is a 12 inch wood fire baked pizza with tomato basil sauce, signature cheese blend, ricotta cheese, meatball slices, caramelized onions and pesto. There were beautiful cookies available to purchase and a small craft beer selection (I purchased soda since it's a workday lunch). I watched my pizza pie cook in the wood fire oven and my pizza baker moved it accordingly for a perfectly baked pizza that tasted delicious. If you aren't hungry for pizza they make a "foldwich" which is their version of a baked sandwich but made with their fresh pizza dough. You can order a pizza salad, garlic strips, chubby cheese bread, soup or a big braised meatball topped with marinara sauce & ricotta cheese. You know, I love the concept of this place. I think it's probably "too good" for Zanesville, but I'll gladly take it if it encourages other similar businesses. The decor is nice, clean, and professional. The menu has a lot of selection. However... I was not impressed with the food. The crust is great, I love the chew of a good pizza crust, and this was on point. But the flavor of the sauce, of the toppings, was very distant. I also ordered a meatball, and it was somehow blander than the ones at Subway. I had no idea that was possible, but it was. I've only been once, and I'm sure I'll be back to give it another try. If my thoughts change, I'll update my review, but currently I am underwhelmed, perhaps I had too high of hopes for this place? Hard to say, but as of right now, I can't recommend Russo's unless you've just got to try every new restaurant (like myself) read more
