I ate lunch here for the first time a week ago and didn't have a great experience. The food was ok, but the cashier was very new and did not have a handle on what she was doing. She overcharged my friend who ordered before me. Then I ordered the 2 empanada platter which comes with a salad and the waitress/cashier just brought out my 2 empanadas. I thought it was strange to bring the hot food out before the salad. When they brought my friend's food to her, I asked about my salad. The waitress/cashier said she had to check and see if my meal came with a salad. A few minutes later she came back with a beautiful and delicious salad. There was lots of fresh fruit and it was very good. But if I hadn't asked about it, I don't think I would have received it and I would have paid $12 for 2 empanadas. I didn't try anything from the bakery and have nothing to share about it. I may come back one more time in a few months and see if service has improved. read more

Too many mom and pop shops in the area to encounter such horrible service and mediocre food. The food is bland and cashier looked like we were bothering her when we were ordering our food. I though it was me and then I watched while we were seated. And realized, nope, it was definitely nher. The bakery items looked amazing and from what I recall was the reason for visiting this place. The links look and taste like a very salty hot dog. The "Destruction" omelette did not have a lot of flavor, it had lots of ingredients, but that was about it. Also ordered coffee and what they had out in the dispenser was cold. Mentioned it and it took about 15 minutes to refresh; We tasted it and it tasted burnt. I haven't been to Rustika Cafe & Bakery in several years. I stopped in to get a quick sandwich to go. I decided on a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant. When I got back to work I was famished. The first thing I noticed is the chicken salad was yellow in color and super runny. I took one small bite and determined it might have curry in it, but it was not good or tasty at all. The chicken salad was super loose and literally fell out of the extremely dry croissant. I thought ordering a croissant from a bakery would result in a fresh one - definitely not the case here. In the to go container along with my chicken salad croissant sandwich, they included tortilla chips - but they were STALE! To me this to go order was totally unacceptable! We ended up getting 2 different pastries and they both tasted delicious. For this review I can only speak of the upper Kirby/southwest location. First and last time ordering from this bakery; terrible first impression. Ordered the triple chocolate cake with high expectations and was highly disappointed along with over 20 guests. Ordered the cake two days before thanksgiving with a confirmation receipt for a 3:30pm pickup time. Received an email; no phone call at 1:11pm exactly stating that the store was closing at 2:00pm and that I needed to pick up my cake by then. The first problem was I'm at work and did not get off until 2:30pm. The second problem was that nowhere on their website did it state that the store was closing early that day, in addition I was given a confirmation time for a 3:30pm pickup. The only offer was that the person I spoke with stated she could wait around until 2:30. Doesn't help me any since I don't get off of work until then. And the "oh well " attitude didn't help either. So now I'm scrambling to make phone calls to pick up this cake and had to get a sick bed ridden family member to pick it up for me. I didn't cancel the order because it was supposed to be a main dessert feature. Now let's get to the cake. The cake was not moist but had a type of dry/wet texture sort of like a tres leches cake. The only up side was the frosting was very good. Not much else was for a $63.00 cake. I left my information for the owner/manager to call me back and that never happened. well, this is one of those places that i tell people about, and they are always like "i pass by here all the time but i've never seen it." It's a little Mexican cafe/bakery that serves breakfast ALL DAY. i always get the huevos a la mexicana (eggs, onion, jalapeno, jalapeno) and add chorizo, and it comes with fresh bread and black beans and it's always excellent. there are many good add-on ingredients, and i love sticking with my usual avocado. the lunch sandwiches are ginormous. my friend asked me guiltily if i'd judge him if he ate the second half. i laughed and said i'd only judge him if he didn't lick the plate. they have tiny samples of their cakes at the counter sometimes. this time it was some dulce de leche cream cheese goodness, i wanted to eat all the pieces but of course delicately only ate one. okay, i ate two. yes, it's pretty expensive for a mexican restaurant. but it's a clean, lovely cafe with huge windows. the noise level is low and feels sweetly romantic during the daytime when you can have a cup of coffee and actually hear the other person talk. read more

Came here for a work lunch-the place was chosen by my boss, who is a big fan. I can see why! I got the Tacos Mexicanos. It came with a side salad-they bring a tasty home dressing to you at the table so you can put on the amount you want. The tacos were fantastic! Two huge tacos with fresh & tasty chicken and veggies, and roasted jalapenos that packed a spice punch. The salsa that came with it was also good. Just had a hot chocolate and beef empanada for breakfast. Quick stop before heading to black Friday sales. Also took a few bites of the monster egg and spinach sandwich he ordered. The hot chocolate is not sweet, made just right. It does take a few minutes for your hot chocolate since it is not instant, slightly higher price tag and it is definitely worth it. They always ask if I would like the empanada warmed up. It is stuffed with corn also, makes a good combination. His sandwich also had pieces of sausage and was Texas toasted. You could easily split for two for light breakfast. Only thing to mindful is make sure to bring cash if you are buying I believe under$10. If it's over that amount you can use your card. read more

They make the most beautiful cakes I have ever seen, they can pretty much create any ideas. The bakery was amazing, we ordered the creme brûlée and cream puff and it was heavenly. I will start by saying the customer service at the bakery is exceptional. I ordered a cake, unfortunately I was not aware the bakery's usual practice is to drizzle a syrup over the cake layers. This for me was a disappointment as the cake was "wet". I did notify the bakery of my dissatisfaction and they replaced the cake with a "syrup-less" version. Folks, we were so impressed by how they executed a custom cake for my son's first birthday that we tried out the cafe for family brunch the next day, and both experiences were fantastic! The physical location is unassuming and if you were to walk or drive by, you would only see their baked goods which look and smell wonderful, but there's a whole world of other goodness you'd be missing. Their menu covers a few cuisines- French, Italian, and Tex/Mex and it all sounds good. Personally I got the chicken flautas. Normally, flatuas are skinny and it almost doesn't matter what's inside as you're really just enjoying the fried crunchy parts. These flautas were generously filled with well seasoned chicken and cheese, and paired with a nice salsa verde. It was a huge portion and I finished the whole thing without regrets. They were also very sweet and brought my son some toast on a separate plate, which he downed along with some black beans, well seasoned and not at all spicy. Now for the cake. My MIL ordered a two tiered custom cake with a separate smash cake to match a birthday theme of "our little prince." The cakes looked perfect to the point that we had some guests unwilling to believe that they were real. But they were, and made of such a light and fresh vanilla cake, I also overate this with no regrets. The smash cake had a mango filling which was unreal and the larger one had berry filling with big, real berries. The buttercream was light and not cloyingly sweet. I had requested that the icing be orange colored, which they were, but they used fondant instead of butter cream. The cake had no vanilla flavor and I had asked specifically if vanilla is the flavor used. I spent $100.00 on this cake. Such a sneaky place hidden right off 59 near Party City. I would not have even thought to stop if I wasn't told about it by someone else. It's a bakery with more Mexican-style sweets and baked goods. Came on a Saturday afternoon just for some coffee+sweets with a friend. It was the perfect afternoon tea kind of place! Had an almond cookie, lemon bar, chocolate alfajor, and a mexican wedding cookie. the combination of the 4 satisfied the tart, sweet, chocolate-y, fruit-y, crumbly, smooth textures and flavors we wanted! The alfajor was probably my favorite; the almond cookie had a nice crumble to it that was refreshing and light. The lemon bar wasn't quite as tart as expected, and it had a smoother texture than normal, not to mention a different height than the usual bar. I still appreciated it though. Mexican wedding cookie was the bottom of the four, but it wasn't too bad. I'd come back to pick up some cookies for an afternoon tea day. read more

I have only ever had the White Chocolate Raspberry cake but man-oh-man IT IS SOOOO GOOD! Its not too sweet for people who don't like overly sweet cakes. It is a simple vanilla cake with raspberry jam? in between the layers and I think has a white chocolate buttercream frosting. My sister raved about this place, so we dropped by for lunch today with her two kids. I must admit, I was very pleasantly surprised. Immediately to my right, as I walked in, was one of the most impressive collection of cookies and sweets I have seen in a long time! I'm not that into sweets, but when I saw these, I had to have some. For lunch, I had the two empanadas platter, beef and chicken mole, since it came with a cookie. I would recommend getting the one empanada platter if you were to try this place out, and just buy the cookie separate. 2 is too much for me. Of the two, I thought the chicken mole was much better. They scrambled to get cake tastings each time- The first time was before Covid and the second was after Covid. We got cut up vanilla or chocolate cake squares with the frosting or filling plopped on top. Then, our wedding cake wasn't what we requested. The flavors were not what we discussed. Not what we asked for. And not what we wanted. I am so very disappointed in Rustika. I know you are family owned but maybe all the locations is causing the overall quality of your food and name to be tarnished. I can't recommend them. read more

I gave her my budget and we talked about it and they created a beautiful cake. A lot more than I expected. But, I can't rave about how beautiful it was without raving about how great it tasted! This place... Is fantastic. If anyone wants to criticize one item or another, that's just personal preference. The service is friendly and attentive, the menu is varied and reasonably priced, the desserts are mouth watering. Soups, sandwiches, empanadas, tacos, salads, chips and salsa, teas, sodas, coffee, cakes, cookies, muffins, sticky buns, scones, pastries, croissants, fresh baked breads to go... I am in heaven. I ordered a chocolate raspberry 10 inch cake for Mother's Day for the family. It looked beautiful and we were excited to try. Before I say anything, it may have just been us. We may just be used to a different cake so not a knock on the business. It just may not be our kind of cake. The cake seemed stale. Wasn't moist at all. It was of the the cake itself was overcooked ... it seemed very porous and dry. There was a lot of frosting coating the cake that made it very very rich. Settled on an iced mochaccino with a double espresso shot layered over vanilla.. Oh and an oatmeal raisin cookie! The doubleshot was a bit sour and not bitter at the end. The more I sipped it the more I realized there was no vanilla layered at the bottom. If it was there I sure didn't taste it, lol! I like espresso by itself but the acidic sour punch just threw me off. Not what I was expecting but a caffeine kick is all I cared about. It wired me up pretty fast! Then tried the mochaccino and I was expecting a bold tasting coffee beverage with hints of chocolate. But it was more like a Yoo-hoo with coffee notes. Very weak.. Tasted more like something I'd order for a kid. Not bad, but again not what I was expecting. Refreshing nonetheless... I still enjoyed it. The best part was their oatmeal raisin cookies. Wow! Nice n soft, perfect balance of sweet and salt hints to bring out all the flavors blended with a perfect buttery finish. Tasted like a healthy homemade cookie from scratch. It was so big I couldn't finish it! Overall it was ok. If anyone can recommend a favorite iced beverage to order with a bolder coffee kick that's not too sweet please holler at me! I'd like to try this place again. Service was kind and courteous as well. I'll try it again soon. EDIT: I had written up this review while I was there in the shop and I hadn't submitted it, but I want to make a note about how the gentleman working the counter made it a point to ask how everything was. I told him it was all ok. I expressed how I had expected something with a bit more boldness to it, and he said "Oh well in that case you should have said something..I could have recommended the Cuban Roast instead of the regular. It was almost as if he knew what I was getting at and we talked a bit more about the espresso and how they can prepare it. My advice is to tell them what you like in a style of coffee and see what they can serve you. I didn't ask, and I wanted to see what they had to offer from the get go but at least now I know for next time. I thought it was a great exchange of words and opinions and he said he would remember me the next time I go back. Now I can't wait! Bumping it up to 4 stars from 3. Very pricey pastries. The chicken mole empanada was dry & they forgot to give me any sauce to go with it. The cheese blintz was filling with 3 blintzes. Similar to crepes but filled with cheese and side of jelly. The Dulce de leche wafer waffle thing was good but it was chewy, I expected crunchiness. My friends lived it though. The Dulce de leche coffee was delicious, I came back the next day for this coffee again. $10 min on credit card so I also ordered the chorizo con papas. That was yummy. I didn't eat the toast or the beans, not a fan of either. I'd come back for the dulce de leche coffee and pay cash. The desserts are way pricey. Service is ok. The guy was nice but I felt he was slightly annoyed bc I couldn't decide what to order, although I was the only customer both times. read more

They workers are super nice and I believe I met the owner who is really sweet. This def. made up for my 100% taquito experience.
