Just right amount of smoke flavor. Brisket was a huge wow... tender, moist and some of best brisket I've had at many bbq spots throughout USA. Ribs had a nice smoke ring, a bit salty for my tastes, but still an excellent cook on the ribs Mac and cheese was great, I wanted a multi cheese taste... add a parm cheese to it... still excellent cook on the Mac and cheese Beans very good, I like a bit more molasses, with few chunks briskets ... excellent however Corn bread on dry side...needs improvement Only one option for bbq ... Absolutely raving about The Rusty Can in Byfield, MA! This hidden BBQ gem blew us away. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone perfection, with so much meat packed onto each one--seriously generous and smoky delicious. The pork belly sandwich special was an unforgettable mouthful: juicy, cheesy, and perfectly stacked on toasted rye that added the ideal crunch. We were shocked (in the best way) by the salad portions--massive! Easily enough to feed a family of four, and fresh as can be. The cornbread? Soft, sweet, and heavenly with the honey butter. We did think a little toast would've helped that butter melt just right--but still a must-order. The house pickles were crisp with the most satisfying snap and bold flavor. TLDR - This place was well worth the wait (I've been eyeing it for some time) and the trip on a snowy day (1.5 hour round-trip). There are only a few restaurants I would whole-heartedly endorse as it does seem quality is falling as prices increase. It's great to find an excellent BBQ place in Mass.! BBQ, particularly good BBQ is so hard to come by in New England and now that I found a place within an hour of home-I'm ecstatic!!! The only other place that has been up to my standards in New England is in Littlelton, NH...there was one in Portland, ME but I believe they closed. Anyway, myself and my girlfriend split the 3-Meat combo and the Brisket Bomb-and took some desserts to go. Here's the deets: This place is like stepping into a Southern Restaurant with a decent Mass. vibe. We loved the realness of the servers-no fake nice-ness, just real people serving real food...It was perfect for us Massholes and we were thankfully there before the dinner crowd, so we couldn't be happier. We sat at the bar and had great service even thought the bartender was very busy. The Brisket Bomb (5/5) is quite similar to a Steak Bomb, but with Brisket. Arguably the best value on the menu. Could split with a friend and maybe get a side or two if your not looking to go big. Pulled Pork (5/5) was a little sweet and a little bit of spicy-and oh so damn good. Most pulled pork is at the very least, passable. This wasn't that. This was amazingly tasty. Ribs (5/5) we got 5 with our plate and they were fall off the bone and super tender & tasty. No sauce needed, although I tried one with some of their sauce-I know not everyone is into saucy BBQ but I've been to Kansas City and ate my way through that town-good saucy BBQ is excellent...as is dry rub...I love it all. I digress, these were great both ways but no sauce is really needed on any of their meat imo. That's a massive compliment! The mac was very creamy and while not the very best I've had it was really up there...we debated this and put it between a 4.25-4.5/5...the best usually with a little bit of breadcrumb imo but that might a personal taste but this was very good. It also has large shells which I love. Big marks for not putting pimento in it...that's def a Southern thing but we prefer without. The BBQ Black Beans 5/5 were soooo good. If you want to be really wild, mix in a little pulled pork or brisket and you can take it to the next level...but def not needed. Now, here is the kicker...they have HONEY BUTTER here. Talking about indulgent...we've only had it a few times and this was better than the best we have had. 7/5!!! Worth a trip for that alone. We practically licked the tray clean :P and got a brownie and a slice of pecan pie to go. We just shared them a few hours later, the taste still on my tongue as I write the review and both were great to me, although my girlfriend felt the brownie need to be a little more in the center...I guess they use a large pan because they were close to being burnt on the outter edges-but they were both great, if cooked a little uneven perhaps. This place is worth the drive as it has the best barbecue in the area. We've only gone during the week and it is always busy but so worth the wait. It is a no frills place but you come for the food. Servers are always friendly and welcoming so you can say that you also come for the great service. Bathrooms are clean and there's plenty of noise from people chatting and enjoying their meal. I usually get the ribs and they are fall of the bones delicious. Their barbecue sauce is also great. For sides I usually get macaroni and cheese and fries. I asked a server about the white bread served with my meal and she told me that some people like to make sandwiches with them. I haven't made one yet but hey it's a thing for some I imagine. Definitely a nice spot about 30 min from the beach we were at for the day. Pulled up and parked next to other cars that made a row in the parking lot "plaza." Walking into the restaurant you initially enter in from the bar/lounge side and greeted by a hostess that'll bring you into the next room which is the dining area. Our server was great! She explained the different meat options and how to order. We opted for the fried chicken wings to start with Cajun dry rub. I thought these were good, juicy, and well seasoned with rub! In the past, the food has been quite good. Typically very happy with the service other than the main woman (older, shorter) bartender. This is the 3rd time I have come in around 4pm and she has just ignored me. This time, I walked out. She is probably the owner, but you don't give free drinks to your friends and just ignore the paying customers. After 10 minutes watching her talking with other employees and customers while drinking her red bull,0 I walked out. If she was busy I would understand, but that was not the case. Not sure how you've been able to stay in business with this attitude, but I don't expect to go again. I have been probably 10 times, but being ignored 3 times for no valid reason, you're out. The Rusty Can has great BBQ! I first found out about this place when I was looking for food options last week when at Crane Beach but didn't end up going due to dinner plans. We did decide to go this week after our beach trip & it was sooo worth it! It's located in Byfield, which is a very small town/village that's apart of Newbury, MA, near Governor's Academy boarding school. When we arrived, it was pretty busy but luckily we did not have trouble getting a table for 3! Prices were very fair & we decided to go with the 2 meat combo: rack of pork ribs & brisket + comes with corn bread & butter, pickles, Mac and cheese, and some white bread. We also got some root beer & orange soda, which came in glass bottles. Everything was delicious! Brisket was tender, not dry at all, & tasty. This, dipped with some of their BBQ sauce, AMAZING. The corn bread was a little dry, though it was perfect with the butter! Now, the ribs were fall off the bone tender! For an app, we did order the Cajun chicken wings w/ ranch dip & I love me a good dry rub wings! These were very yummy. It's honestly so hard to find any BBQ spots in Boston, & I know they do exist in MA... they are just farther out. Rusty Can is about an 1hr-1hr15min drive north of Boston. I have to say that the brisket on the sesame bun is very good but at $20 that's a lot for along the ribs with St. Louis. I do prefer a baby back. They were cooked well but they just didn't do it for me. The chicken wings were juicy but baked no crispness. The mac & cheese was horrible. The coleslaw was horrible. I don't think I would go back but just a brisket sandwich. as my friend for warned me, it's either hit or miss. Yup, there really is an authentic Southern-style barbecue joint over by the coast in Massachusetts. Who knew? They actually understand that of course barbecue is served with 2 slices of white bread and a big chunk of moist sweet cornbread with honey butta'. I'm visiting New England from Nashville, Tennessee and heard a rumor about this place so wanted to check it out. Now I'm convinced that if a serious restaurant investor discovered this near-dive super clean barbecue restaurant they would franchise it in a Dallas minute. The food is served on metal cafeteria style trays brought by waitress running their tales off because at 3 pm on a Saturday afternoon the wait was 30 minutes & the place was packed. And, everyone leaving seemed to be carrying boxes of their leftovers. The portions are more than generous ! I tried the dry rub ribs with the homemade barbecue sauce - very meaty & yummy. The slaw has a good tang, the black beans had chunks of meat, the Mac n ' Cheese was a child's dream of creaminess. Homemade crisp pickles !! It was all so so good but DANG the best, like the very best thing was the homemade grape nut custard made like crème brûlée with a torched sugar top ! OMG like the world's best dessert in such a huge portion that I had to take it home to finish over 3 separate sittings. My mouth is watering thinking about it. The restaurant isn't fancy, but it's perfect as a BBQ joint. Expect to wait if you come at dinner or lunchtime. The staff helped us choose what was an amazing meal! The ribs were dry and lacked flavor, the brisket was good but not fantastic. The black beans were very good but the coleslaw was not very good. The need to come up with a better dressing, that compliments the cabbage not pickle it. The corn bread was very good. The white bread that also came with the meal was very poor quality. After hearing amazing things about this place and having a craving for BBQ, we had to give it a try! We got there a little before 6 on Saturday and it was busy! We were quoted about 45 minutes, but were told the bar was first come, first serve so we stalked for seats and were able to get two pretty quickly. He continually checked in and made sure we had everything we needed. Paul was awesome! Now to the food! It was a busy Saturday night, and when we arrived, the hostess ( older looking red head) gave us a pager and told us the wait would be about 20-30 minutes. That seemed reasonable, so we waited. About 20 minutes in, I noticed a party that had arrived after us being seated ahead of us. I didn't say anything at first, figuring it might've just been an oversight. But then it happened again, another group that came in after us was seated before we were. At that point, I went up to her to ask about our table. She said in a nasty tone she needed to check and mentioned things were busy and a bit confusing. I explained that I had noticed at least two parties who arrived after us had already been seated. Instead of addressing the concern, she became defensive and argued that some people wait in their cars. That may be true, but these groups had come in after us, received pagers after us, and were waiting in the same area, so the explanation didn't add up. If they had cameras they can verify. I would have been ok with " I messed up, I'll seated you next". The interaction quickly went downhill. She became argumentative, which is never a good approach in customer service, especially when there's a valid concern. Her attitude came across as dismissive and unprofessional. With at poor attitude, I sure hope she wasn't the owner, just hired help. I know good help is hard to find. She did all the wrong things in customer service. WOW! Why haven't I been to this remarkable BBQ spot till last week??!!! This is a no frills place and I like it. It's literally right off the highway with ample parking. I came here on Friday and there was a little wait but it wasn't that long, maybe 15 min. They also do not take any reservations which is good because they want your whole party there before seating you. Now lets get down to the food.. McRib- Was sooo good! Kind of like the Mcdonalds one but way better and of course with real meat and super fresh. The pickles went very well with the pork. They do not take reservations, nor will they even put your name on the list until everyone is there, which is a bit ball-busty. If the food wasn't as good as it is, I wouldn't bother making the drive. But I digress. We started with the duck leg in sticky sauce off the specials board. It was delicious, but awkward to share--the meat isn't removed from the bone, so know that going in. The house made chips always steal the show alongside the Vidalia onion dip. *chef's kiss*. I waddled into this barbecue place like a hungry bear that had just discovered a buffet and the smell of smoked meat hit me so hard my stomach practically started cheering. I sat down, opened the menu, and immediately realized ordering one thing would be a tragedy, so I decided to sample basically the entire menu like some kind of extremely enthusiastic barbecue scientist. First I ordered ribs--multiple racks, not just one--and the waiter raised an eyebrow like he was watching a nature documentary about an unusually determined animal. When the ribs arrived they were shiny with sauce and smelled incredible, and after one bite I knew I had made the correct life decision. Then I ordered brisket, which was so tender it practically fell apart when I looked at it and tasted so smoky and rich that I briefly forgot about every responsibility I have ever had. After that I decided it would be irresponsible not to try the pulled pork, which showed up in a mountain so large it probably needed its own ZIP code, and when I piled it onto a bun and took a bite I genuinely considered standing up and applauding the chef. Of course barbecue without sides would be barbaric, so I ordered mac and cheese, baked beans, cornbread, fries, and coleslaw, and every single one of them tasted amazing--the mac and cheese was ridiculously creamy, the baked beans tasted like they had been simmering since the invention of fire, and the cornbread was sweet and perfect. At this point the waiter kept walking by my table and staring at the growing pile of empty plates while I continued pointing at more things on the menu and saying "yes, that one too," like a pirate collecting treasure except the treasure was smoked meat and the chest was my stomach. Then I tried their sausage platter which looked like it belonged at a Viking feast and somehow tasted even better than everything else I had already eaten, which honestly didn't seem possible. Eventually I decided dessert was necessary for scientific purposes, so I ordered banana pudding and pecan pie and both were unbelievably good, which was impressive considering I had already eaten enough barbecue to feed a small village. Unfortunately right as I was thinking about ordering one more thing, the manager came over and politely informed me that I had ordered more food than anyone in the history of the restaurant and that I might have to leave because I was apparently eating like the final boss of barbecue. I walked out extremely full, very happy, and slightly offended that my passion for smoked meat had gotten me kicked out, but despite that small inconvenience the food was so good that I would absolutely come back again... although next time I might wear a disguise and attempt to order the entire menu all over again. read more

Brisket was dry and bland. No flop just fall and break. 5th time getting Brisket here over the years and this BBQ is trash by Texas standards. Sorry to the hommies that I know that worked there over the years. Popular place in New England with terribly sub par smoked meat. read more
